HeyaWimp Witch Episode 2 is finally here, and I'm so happy to share it with everyone! I want to thank everyone who worked with me to make this episode - you guys are amazing! Credits below, please check these guys out!

Some nice and fun characters some entertaining fun on this one, great use of color too, This was a great opportunity for me to review this you set a standard and I did enjoy what you have here now, I found it unique and a fun bunch of characters in this one.

As we creep ever closer towards the winter solstice, temperatures continue to drop, we get harder frosts, fewer deciduous leaves linger on branches, and we shift from a world abuzz with animal life and color to one that is a bit more still and even grayscale at times. What would have been a relieving breeze just two months ago carries a somewhat more threatening rustle through the remaining, rattling leaves now. This season provides an ideal backdrop for Halloween-lovers and people who appreciate these darker months for the ample reflection time we are awarded as the sun sets earlier with each passing day. Flower phenology may not be the first natural occurrence to jump to mind in late October in Maine, but one of my favorite flowers, and one that shares my name, is blooming now and well worth finding before we become blanketed in snow: witch hazel.

You can find a link to the full transcript of this show as well as references, contact information, and accompanying photos by visiting archives.weru.org. Thanks for listening and please join us next week for another dive into The Nature of Phenology.

Today we do something weird, in honor of the end of the second season! Instead of coming up with a future and then finding experts to talk about it, I asked an AI to write a future for us. And the AI apparently wants us to talk about space travel, witches, and the occult.

Around the same time that Idea Channel video came out there was this short film that came out called Sunspring which was written by an AI named Benjamin. The guys behind Benjamin fed a neural network a huge corpus of science fiction scripts, everything from Avatar to Armageddon to Resident Evil to Spiderman. And they asked that AI to write them a script. And then they spent one day with a cast, filming the movie that Benjamin wrote for them. I totally recommend watching it.

Then I called up Annalee Newitz, to get her take on the witches and how the themes in this scene fit in with the broader science fiction landscape. (Fun fact, Annalee is the person who first asked me to do a podcast for Gizmodo, and thereby birthed Flash Forward! Yay Annalee!)

And last but not least, we talk to the brains and voices behind Spirits Pod, a new podcast about mythology. Julia Schifini and Amanda McLoughlin have been best friends since childhood, and co-host a podcast all about myths and legends that I very much enjoy. And the two of them had all sorts of fun and interesting stuff to say about this witchy future.

Flash Forward is produced by me, Rose Eveleth, and is part of the Boing Boing podcast family. The intro music is by Asura and the outtro music is by Broke for Free. Stephen Granade was our pastor, Jon Olier was our narrator, Jake Mastrangelo, was our doctor and Tamara Krinsky was our witch. The music you heard in the intro was by BenSound and the break music was by Fields Ohio .The episode art is by Matt Lubchansky.

Twist ending. The Doctor is not human but another piece of software, possibly even an offspring of the virus, but he is loyal to humanity. He is a stand alone system, too dangerous to allow him access to a network, and so must physically travel to different areas to interface with infected hardware directly. He has become a kind of specialist at perminantly shutting down the network capabilities of the witches in situations too dangerous to enter physically.

'Witch' is a hard episode to rate. In its first half, it embodies all of the things that have made The Midnight Club as a whole a well-intentioned but overall slightly frustrating watch. Around the halfway point, however, it switches focus and delivers some of the show's strongest material to date.

Kevin wraps things up relatively swiftly and it looks like we're about to move into the meat of the episode when Ilonka throws a curveball. She has a tale that she wants to sell. "Double story!" shouts Natsuki excitedly. "Oh...," sighs your reviewer, slightly annoyed.

Ilonka's tale, 'Witch' focuses on a young girl, Imani, who is learning to use her magical powers. She falls in love with a young man, Ben - played, of course, by Kevin actor Igby Rigney. She has a premonition that he will die and sets out to try and save him - a foolhardy mission, we suspect. Stopping off at a gas station late one night, Imani and Ben get embroiled in a robbery that looks like it will end with him taking a bullet to the face. Before we discover his fate, however, Anya collapses, prematurely ending the story.

She storms outside to collect water from the stream (it's allegedly in a healing vortex, remember?). Predictably, she runs straight into Shasta, who shows her the hourglass tattoo on her wrist and who tells her how to conduct a ritual that might be able to save Anya's life.

Desperate and ready to try anything to help her friend, Ilonka talks the gang into taking part in it - except Sandra, of course. She's come a long way since falling out with Spence a few episodes back, but pagan rites are a step too far for her. It's a nice touch that, while the characters have all been quite critical of her religion, her decision here is treated with respect.

It's a genuinely tender and powerful moment, all of these characters giving up the things that matter the most to them on the slim chance that it will help save their ailing friend's life. After a slow start to the episode, it reminds you of how genuinely touching this show can be.

This is the last episode of our podcast; certainly the last for an indefinite time, at the very least. We're not adding that commonly-used word of 'sadly' to this process of dying because there will also be rebirth. Yes, there is sorrow but there is also joyful anticipation for the next things which are ours to do.

We're isolated from each other, trying to survive a global pandemic. Each day brings more uncertainty and terrifying news, as we take shelter from an invisible global scourge. A single cough can send your mind to a dark place. Life is paused. Sports are on hold. This sucks.

A mystical hinge separates Michigan Owning the Rivalry from Ohio State Taking it Over in the illusion that is linear time. If you try to isolate the moment this hinge first appeared, you'll end up right here, on 4th & 1. Today's journey takes us to our Big Bang when the universe we want to live in was first activated.
