Harris Jayaraj was born and brought up in Chennai in a Christian family. His father hails from a Tamil Christian family and his mother from a Hindu Naidu family.[4] He studied at Krishnaswamy Matric School. At age six, Harris began his formal training in carnatic music.[5] His father, S. M. Jayakumar, was a noted film guitarist and have frequently collaborated with T. M. Soundararajan, A. L. Raghavan, M.S.Viswanathan, Soolamangalam Sisters, K. J. Yesudas, S. Janaki, Shankar Ganesh, S.P.Balasubramaniam, K. V. Mahadevan, Malaysia Vasudevan, L. R. Eswari, Jikki, K. Jamuna Rani, P.Susheela and Malayalam music director Shyam.[4][6][7] Following two distressing bomb blast incidents he became more religiously inclined and young Harris had to take over the family responsibility.[6] His father wanted him to become a guitarist and made him learn classical guitar from Mr. A. Abdul Sattar.[8]

"Harris and I, when we work together, we put in a lot of effort. I give him the entire script. I give him inputs. When we sat down for Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, I told him to do away with the traditional pallavi-charanam format in the Manjal veyyil song."[40]

Harris once again ventured into Telugu films with a successful album Sainikudu.[41] The music album of the film was released simultaneously in 10 chosen venues from five different countries.[42] Gautham Menon who considers the music and background score of Harris as a major asset of his films,[43] once again teamed up with Harris on a romantic-thriller Pachaikili Muthucharam. The soundtracks of Pachaikili Muthucharam are appraised as melancholic, lilting, mysterious, and alternatively catchy.[44] Harris' collaboration with Jeeva continued with Unnale Unnale.[45][46] The music album oozing with energy all through proved to be a cut above the rest.[47] His next Telugu venture Munna had a good commercial reception, and the song Manasa fetched a Filmfare Best Singer Female award to Sadhana Sargam. With the following album Bheema, Harris continued his mettle with all the six songs. The track Siru Parvaiyalae used Pashto words in interludes. The album was praised for bringing up visual recapitulation from audio.[48] Harris used a live orchestra of 84 members for the action cop film Sathyam.[49][50] In 2009, Harris Jayaraj was signed in for Vikram Kumar's 24, which was to star Vikram.[51] He was also signed in for the Malayalam film Yoddha 2, starring Mohanlal.[52] But both films were subsequently shelved.

In Anegan, Harris's "Danga Maari Oodhari", featuring lyrics in North Madras slang become an instant chart-buster.[53] After a hiatus of 6 years, Harris collaborated with Gautham Vasudev Menon for the action cop film Yennai Arindhaal.[54] The soundtrack received positive reviews from critics and according to Behindwoods, it was the most played album of 2015 in Chennai radio stations.[55]

In 2011, Harris announced his first musical world tour titled "Harris on the Edge". The tour featured live performance of Harris all over the world accompanied by a troupe of Tamil playback singers, including Karthik, Haricharan, Chinmayi, Tippu, Harini, Naresh Iyer, Harish Raghavendra, Krish, Aalap Raju, KK, Benny Dayal, Andrea, Suvi Suresh, Sunitha Sarathy, Srilekha Parthasarathy and Shweta Mohan and international musicians and dancers.[56] The event was coordinated by Techfront and was directed by A. L. Vijay.[57] The tour kick started in Chennai on 8 October 2011, and later continued in Coimbatore on 23 December 2011 and in Dubai on 4 February 2012.[58] The whole tour was covered by Jaya TV.[59][60]

Harris opened a new studio on 8 January 2017, called Studio H. The studio consists of the latest audio recording systems and technology. The first song to be composed in the studio was Halena from Iru Mugan. The S3 soundtrack was the first project entirely composed here.[61][62]

He composed music for various television commercials including a Coca-Cola commercial featuring Vijay. In 2008, he composed for Herova? Zerova? ad campaign which Suriya initiated under the Agaram Foundation, working to help children who drop out of school early in Tamil Nadu. With the Ministry of Education in Tamil Nadu, he created a short commercial video outlining child poverty, labour and lack of education, titled Herova? Zerova?. The film was written and produced by Sivakumar and also starred Suriya, Vijay, R. Madhavan and Jyothika.

Harris is married to Suma Jayaraj, the couple have a son named Samuel Nicholas Harris and a daughter named Karen Nikitha Harris, born in 2006.[63] Nikitha is a playback singer who made her debut through the song Vinnil Vinmeen for the movie Kaappaan,[64][65] and won a V4U Media award in 2020.[66]

Jeeva was a communist ideologue and post-graduate in hydrology from the arid village of Thanoothu in Tirunelveli district who had discovered groundwater under some lands of the hamlet. The villagers could use the water as an irrigation source for the entire Tirunelveli district and the neighbouring Thoothukudi district. However, a greedy entrepreneur Chirag cheated the villagers into giving their lands for factory construction. Jeeva got arrested, and six villagers committed suicide to bring this news to the forefront of the media and get Jeeva released.

Moved by Jeeva's past, Kathir takes up the cause for the villagers while still posing as Jeeva. The people of the old home and Kathir go to the jury to convince them in their favour, but Kathir starts stating rules and scares the main jury person (whom Chirag had bribed). Kathir then sends a person, disguised as a hairdresser, to Chirag and makes him lay a fingerprint on Chirag's neck. After that, Chirag sends fifty men to kill Kathir, but he defeats them. Meanwhile, Jeeva finds himself in the Kolkata prison. With the help of Vivek, who has heard his story and plans to kill Kathir, he escapes with Vivek's henchmen. Unaware that Jeeva is heading for Chennai with Vivek's henchmen, Kathir attempts to convince the media to bring the villagers' plight to national consciousness.

A few days later, at the Madras High Court, the judge declares the verdict in favour of Jeeva and the villagers but adds that Chirag has claimed that certain villagers working abroad have shown their support for the factory. If they cannot prove that Chirag faked their support within the next five days, the verdict will go in Chirag's favour. Since the villagers who have denied supporting the factory are abroad and cannot come to Chennai so soon to rebut Chirag's claims, Kathir decides on drastic measures to sensationalise the issue. He, Ankitha, Ravi, and the elderly home inmates block the water supply to Chennai by sitting on the pipelines. With the plight of Chennai people having gained national attention, Kathir comes out of the pipeline after a few days and highlights the villagers' plight to the media. His speech is broadcast nationwide.

Kathir discovers that Jeeva has escaped and is searching for him. Meanwhile, Jeeva and Vivek's henchmen reach Chennai, but Chirag's henchmen kidnap Jeeva. While in Chirag's custody, he sees Kathir's speech on television and feels moved by his efforts to help the villagers. On the eve before the verdict, a phone call exposes Kathir's bluff, but Kathir promises the villagers that he will surely help them. He tells them that Jeeva is alive and will rescue him from Chirag. Kathir goes to Chirag's office, rescues Jeeva, and kills Chirag. The next day, the judge declares the verdict in favour of Jeeva and the villagers. Despite the success, Kathir does not take part in the ensuing celebrations. Instead, he surrenders to the police after promising Ankitha, who has fallen in love with him, that he will marry her once he is released.

In February 2013, sources reported that A. R. Murugadoss would collaborate with Vijay again, after the success of Thuppakki (2012).[11] The director had pitched three scripts for the film, with the first one being a romantic drama script, an action film which has Vijay playing a dual role (also being planned as a multi-starrer), and a sequel to Thuppakki.[12] Later, Vijay chose the second script and asked Murugadoss to work on the project.[12] Ayngaran International was reported to produce the film, whose shooting has been planned to begin in late-2013, after Vijay completing the shooting for Jilla, and Murugadoss' completion on the Hindi remake of Thuppakki, titled Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty.[13]

The project was officially confirmed by Murugadoss on mid-November 2013, through his Twitter page.[14][15] Subaskaran Allirajah, a British-Sri Lankan based Tamil entrepreneur, agreed to become the major investor in the film, by producing it under his newly backed film distribution and production company Lyca Productions.[14] The film eventually became the first production of the company,[16] with Ayngaran International and Eros International jointly distributing the film.[17]

Murugadoss replaced his usual music director Harris Jayaraj with Anirudh Ravichander signing for the project.[18][19] George C. Williams, who worked on the director's production Raja Rani (2013), was signed as the cinematographer.[20] Art director Lalgudi N. Ilayaraja was selected to handle the production design.[21] The film was earlier rumoured to be titled as Dheeran and Vaal.[22][23] However, in March 2014, Murugadoss confirmed that the film would be titled Kaththi and that it was scheduled to be released on Diwali.[24] In June 2014, Murugadoss speaking in an interview, dismissed claims of being a gangster film, and Vijay playing father-son role in the film, and added that the film will be set in Chennai.[25]
