High school students offered more math options

Curriculum - Students entering Grade 10 next year can expect changes
to their math curriculum under a new plan from Alberta Education.
Three streams will now be available to students: one for university-
bound students, one for those entering the trades and another to teach
life skills, such as balancing a chequebook.
In Grade 11 and 12, students can choose between a course designed for
university science students, one for arts students and another for
those bound for trades and technical institutions.
Previously, there were two streams--pure or applied. The new
curriculum will put less emphasis on pure math and more emphasis on
practical applications, said Greg Kuzniuk, a spokesman for Alberta
Education.
By removing some elements, they are hoping students will get a better
understanding of the parts that are taught.
"We want to put the focus on students gaining a great depth of
understanding of mathematics as opposed to a very cursory or surface
view," Kuzniuk said.
The students are able to switch to a different stream at any time he
said.
