Hello Everyone,

My name is Stephanie and will be a staff member this summer. I am a
student at West Valley College as well as Foothill and UC Santa Cruz
has accepted my transfer agreement for Fall 2010. I took part in the
2009 UCLA project as a student and I really enjoyed myself. I have
also been out to Wilder Ranch a number of times and I have fallen in
love with archaeology but my interest lies in Cultural Anthropology so
I’m really excited for this summer. At this point it looks like I will
be someone you will have daily contact with during the project. I look
forward to meeting everyone and spending four weeks working with you
guys. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask. This
project will be different from UMAP so I may not be able to answer
every question but I will try my best. I will check this site often
and reply to any questions as soon as I can. I hope you are all as
excited as I am!

Hello all!
My name is Sorayda Santos and I am a graduate student at Hunter
College here in NYC! I will be a staff member of some capacity this
upcoming 2010 season. Before the project takes place I will be in
Mexico City analyzing Teotihuacan lithics with Linda Manzanilla at
UNAM. Although I have never excavated at a Maya site, I have taken
plenty of courses on the Maya, have visited over 26 different Maya
sites and know quite a bit about Maya lithics. Belize is a very unique
country with a diverse population. I love Belize and I am sure all of
you will! If you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate
to contact me.
Best,
Sorayda

Hello Stephanie,

I look forward to meeting you. I am Linda and I too will be coming
down to work with Sam and John this summer. While most of my
experience is in archaeology, I am much more interested this year in
helping to facilitate the community service learning projects. Maybe
we could work on this together? It sounds like you are the pro! In
any case, I worked on a project with Sam at Xunantunich and in the
'hinterlands." I also worked on my husband's project in Belize doing
the artifact analysis. However, most of my experience comes from our
homeland, in the American Southwest. My husband, Ted, will also be
coming down to work as an archaeological staff member. My experience
is varied... I have managed several archaeological laboratories and
conducted lithic analysis and ceramic analysis. I also teach writing,
and I have a pretty strong educational technology background. Most
importantly though, I love and miss Belize dearly. I also truly enjoy
working with the students, and I look forward to meeting all of you.
I am starting to put together some materials for the service learning/
community projects and I would love your input. Let me know what is
the best way to communicate with you.

Linda

Hey Stephanie,
I'm attending the program this summer as a student( just bough my
ticket!YAY). I'm also a student at West Valley College, this will be
my first excavation and am very excited about it. I was wondering if
there is an orientation before we leave for Belize? And if you have
any tips for items to bring with? I was also curious if you knew the
places we would be visiting through the program, so I dont plan to
visit them on the weekends? Thanks! Hope to here from you soon!

Hi Danielle,

I'm glad you are so excited for this summer! You have some great
questions so I will try to answer them as best I can.
-Orientation: Sam has mentioned that he might arrange a meeting/
orientation for all of the local students sometime before the trip. He
will send out information about this if he decides to go through with
it.
-Items to bring with: Well, you will need clothes for the week that
you will spend in the Jungle at the archaeological site. These should
include work pants, a white long sleeve button up shirt, a sturdy pair
of hiking boots, a tee shirt and a hat or bandana. You will want to
dress in layers as there is always the possibility of rain. You will
also need plenty of bug spray and anti itch cream. You will probably
also be instructed to bring your own tools for excavation and I’m sure
Sam will provide a list of tools to include. As for the rest of the
time, you will probably be most comfortable in shorts, a tee shirt and
sandals. I would bring a pair of Tevas (or similar sandals) as well as
flip flops. You will want a camera, of course! I also suggest bringing
snack food with you such as cliff bars or crackers, stuff that travels
well and will keep you satisfied.
-Weekend Travel: I am not sure how different the weekends will be this
year but last year we went to a few different places as a group.
However, I can tell you places you may want to visit on your own. The
Cayes, Tikal, and ATM (Actun Tunichil Muknal) are all amazing. You
shouldn’t worry about planning out your weekends now, once you are in
country your plans may change. You will probably want to spend your
weekends with new friends and it is really easy to plan a trip the
night before.

I hope these answers helped!
