Dear all,

I am pleased to share with you my latest article, “Avoidable food waste and household size: A life cycle comparison of packaged and unpackaged fruits and vegetables,” published in Sustainable Production and Consumption. This work is part of my PhD research on the sustainability of food consumption, carried out at the division of Bioeconomics of KU Leuven.

Using life cycle analysis (LCA), we compared packaged, fresh-cut fruits and vegetables with their unpackaged, home-prepared counterparts across household sizes. The study offers new insights on integrating consumer segmentation and food waste dynamics into environmental assessments. Our findings underline that while reducing plastic use is important, policies must also consider the environmental costs of food waste. Improved, disaggregated waste data are key to more effective decisions.
