Dear all,

Hope you all have a good day fighting food waste!

To urge retailers in Flanders to take action, one of our partners is making a business case to fight food waste.

They are looking for financial data ( cost per kg of waste) for fruits and vegetables.
Does anyone have any idea if some general indicators or data is available for this?
What indicators are you using?

Cheers!

Hi Jasmien, Hi All,

Chapter 8 of this report shows an approach for calculating the costs associated with household food waste: https://wrap.org.uk/sites/default/files/2020-12/Methods-used-for-Household-Food-and-Drink-Waste-in-the-UK-2012.pdf. In short, it involved taking government data on household spend for certain food categories and dividing by data on the weight of purchases (from the same source), giving the cost per kg of the food wasted. Alternatives include collating data from supermarket websites.

I hope this helps.

All the best,

Tom

Hi Jasmien,
To find out how much it costs to produce a case or pound of fruit and vegetable, you can check out enterprise budgets for each crop. For example, this one from North Carolina State University: Tomato Enterprise Budget 2021 There are lots of these available in the states, surely there's something comparable where you live. Best of luck!
