Dear all,
I am very pleased to share my new paper with you, Food for Thought: An Assessment of Australian Law and Regulation for Combating Food Waste.
As part of my PhD, I conducted the first comprehensive analysis of Australia's food waste law and regulation. My research shows how the significant number of policies regarding food waste combined with the lack of laws that directly address food waste illustrates a disconnect between policy rhetoric and governmental action. Current responses to food waste are characterised by inconsistency (eg definitions etc), a lack of a focus on preventing waste (more about managing waste) and a strong emphasis on voluntary-based initiatives. Legislative responses fail to consider indirect causes (eg supermarkets) or do not address food waste at all (eg food rescue). This article shows why the current focus limits the ability of the regime to respond to Australia's food waste problem.
You can find the paper at (2023) 39 EPLJ 354,

All the best,

I acknowledge, and The Queensland University of Technology (QUT) acknowledges, the Turrbal and Yugara as the First Nations owners of the lands where QUT now stand. We pay respect to their Elders, lores, customs and creation spirits. We recognise that these lands have always been places of teaching, research and learning. QUT acknowledges the important role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people play within the QUT community.
