Calling all academics and researchers who care about food waste!

Last year, the UK government launched its Consultation on improved reporting of food waste by large food businesses in England. 3,728 out of the total 3,852 responses to the consultation were sent by members of the public via Feedback’s email action calling for mandatory food waste reporting for large and medium-sized businesses, including at primary production level – and many other organisations and academics responded to raise pressure. However, the government is yet to respond to this despite it closing 9 months ago, and we’re hearing worrying indications that mandatory reporting is at serious risk of being kicked into the long grass or scrapped completely.

Feedback are thus stepping up our campaign on this to 1) amp up the pressure to make sure they deliver a response/legislative proposal for mandatory food waste reporting asap, and 2) we want to keep up the pressure for a strong proposal, covering all medium and large businesses from farm to fork, to pass into law, if/when a proposal makes it to parliament.

We’ve created a new ‘Make Food Waste Count’ food waste statement to demonstrate the number of organisations/public figures who want to see strong mandatory food waste reporting introduced. We’re looking for UK-based academics and public figures to support this statement alongside the organisational signatories – we’d love to have you on board. The more support we can get, the more we can collectively demonstrate to policymakers the strength of feeling on this, and help with media coverage.

Please help amp up the pressure by supporting the statement via this form, and share with other academics or organisations you think would like to sign. (Please don’t share the statement publicly yet, as we’ll launch it once it has a critical mass of signatories).

If you want to read more about the case for mandatory food waste reporting from farm to fork, we’ve created this policy briefing – and if you have any questions, or any extra info that you think would help strengthen the case for mandatory reporting in this briefing, please do share with me at mar...@feedbackglobal.org

In terms of next steps - watch this space for some exciting work we have planned to ramp up the pressure on MPs/Lords (and if you know any MPs/Lords who are supportive of food waste issues, please do let us know!). If you have appetite to get more involved in this phase of the campaign – be it in terms of spreading email actions to supporters, quotes for media, or raising pressure on policymakers, please do let us know.

All the best,

Martin
