What is the best method to keep ice scoops clean during a busy operation?

Is it by Immersing in disinfectant /place it in dry container outside the ice bin/hang the scoop out side/hang the scoop inside the ice machine?

Please advise.

Best practice to keep ice scoop in clean and hygienic state is to keep it immersed in disinfectant in SS pot either hanged or flat placed but out side Ice machine.

Make  sure to use ice scoop with covered handle because when workers use ice scoop during busy operation back side of their hand might touch the ice because of which there are chances of cross contamination

Dear T.Alex,

Good afternoon,

As per my opinion, 1) you should use scoop holder for proper placement , normally used outside ice machine.2) Then you should have a regular preventive cleaning and sanitizing plan for scoops.I think so cleaning is not a problem with scoop, the problem is sanitization. so daily basis it should be sanitized. Below is the link for scoop holder , you can visit

Tisha,
You do not have to sanitize the scoops if it is being continously used during busy time. You can put the scoop immersed in ice with the handles out. The scoop handle can get dirty if the food handler has dirty hands or if the scoops is placed in a dirty area.

Sanitise the scoop and dry it completletely at least once a day. You can either leave it in a dry holder or a bucket with sanitiser of appropriate concentration.

The only way some one can get sick is through the food handlers hands.

Hi Tisha

Our practice is immersing the ice scoops in sanitizing solutions when not in use, following the concentration that our supplier has recommended. This is for scoops used in ice machines.

For scoops used in ice storage bin in our outlets, we are keeping the scoops in a dry clean container when not in use.

We have reminders posted also in each ice machine so that the staff are aware of what to follow when collecting ice.
