Poultry farm foot dips frequently ineffective

Sep 17, 2015
Poultry producers are being urged to review the way they manage boot dips, following recent research which shows that their use on farms is frequently ineffective.
Poultry farm foot dips frequently ineffective

The study was conducted by the department of bacteriology at the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) in the UK in order to assess the anti-salmonella activity of boot dips on poultry farms.
Pathogens present a significant risk

"The introduction of pathogens from the external environment into poultry houses via the boots of farmworkers and visitors presents a significant risk," say the report's authors in the abstract. "But the effectiveness of these boot dips as a preventative measure can vary."

To assess this, the scientists collected 112 boot dip samples from commercial layer farms and tested them for their activity against Salmonella enteritidis. Depending on the test model used, effectiveness ranged from 37% of the dips tested, to 86%.
The study pointed to a number of factors influencing efficacy, including the dilution used, the presence and amount of organic matter in the dip, temperature, the presence of biofilms and the contact time. "Dips may not be changed regularly or may have been exposed to rain and other environmental elements," the report adds.

Salmonella enteritidis is a re-emerging threat

The APHA, in its quarterly report on avian diseases, refers to Salmonella enteritidis as "a re-emerging threat". It says the study "reinforces the need for veterinarians and industry to remind producers on how best to use and manage boot dips as a means of pathogen control."

* The report "Assessment of the anti-salmonella activity of boot dip samples" is published in the journal Avian Pathology.

Foot dips in most cases I have seen help spread contamination.
One, the concentration of the chemical is never maintained and the contact time is never enough to kill pathogens. Two, people just walk in with the dirty shoes ( an any organic matter with it). One contaminated shoe will contaminate all the others who follow. In many premises, I have also seen that the area before the dip is poorly maintained.
People also find exceptional ways to walk around the pool and that's really funny to see.

Sudhakar,
You need to be careful if the organic matter content that enters the dip is high. It can inactivate chlorine easily.
Do you do verification of this at anytime?

This Chlorine dioxide is HCl based with sodium hypo chlorite,

for foot dip 40 ppm chlorine dioxide solution can be used & has to be change the foot dip atleast every 4 hrs or 6 hrs depends upon by checking the ppm concentration & the more usage & becomes dirty quickly.

Fadi,
The foot dip doesn't work in polity shops.

What you think is it applicable and effective to apply chlorine sanitation step in the traditional poultry shops where they are selling a live chickens i saw many of them with a fullabsence of minimum requirements in the sanitation and hygiene standards.here we should pay attention and focus as the spreading of microorganisms are highly occurred and can cause a lot of issues .

What other thoughts here in this point?

• DON’T create a bacteria bath. In facilities or areas in which foot dips are utilized, it is essential that they are monitored to make sure that a “bacteria bath” has not been created. Foot dips need to be monitored not only for adequate concentration but also for appropriate volume of sanitizing solution. Often, by the end of the first break in a given shift, there is so much organic material built up in the container that there is no longer any sanitizer effectiveness. In fact, the foot dip is a pool of bacteria that everyone walks through. Thus, routine monitoring of the volume and concentration and regularly changing the dip solution is best.

• DO require that nonporous footwear is worn, especially in the production areas. Footwear should be constructed of material that is cleanable. It should not be made of leather or cloth that will get and stay wet, which is uncomfortable for the wearer and may result in the employee avoiding the necessary foamers and foot dips so they don’t have to be wet all day.

That risk doesn't go away with a food dip.
In fact, it has nothing to do with a foot dip.

The exposure to live birds became a threat after the bird flu incidents became a threat. However, bacterial pathogens are transferred by contact mostly and good handwashing after meat is handled, prevention of contamination in home kitchen and cooking are steps that would prevent consumers from falling ill.

Yes I agree, if not monitored - the foot dip pool will become "Pool of pathogens".
I think disposable shoe covers from a hands-free dispensing unit is always better than the Foot dip pools.
