Validation of Metal detector

Dear All,

Good evening all of you..

•  Where should the test pieces in the aperture of metal detector be places(for maximum assurance) to see whether it is working effectively or not ?? And why ??
  

• What is the risk in one point assurance(validation point of view) of metal detector ??
  

If metal detector having any company, metal detection is a CCP in all companies.

If you use metal detector, there must be SOP for operating metal detector.

Greetings from Quality Middle East !

  You can ask the supplier of metal detector to provide the test pieces.Most of the supplier will provide the test pieces of Fe,SS,NF free of cost.If you don't have it  we can provide the details of  the supplier.You can choose the metal detector as per the nature of your product and process.(wet or dry and aluminium foil based packaging materials).All metal detection process is not always CCP .Mostly if you have two metal detectors in one line  the last metal detection  can be CCP. . We cannot prejudge any step as the CCP without doing Hazard analysis. 

How you can check the metal detector and ensure that it is effective.Check the memory/reset function of the same. Pass test piece followed by product  then another test piece product and then the final test pieces and make sure that your detector detecting all the test pieces.(Keep the test pieces inside the product and repeat the same .It cannot be possible for the conveyor stop belt metal detector ). You can calibrate it regularly with external DAC accredited  calibration lab.But please let me know it is conveyor metal detector or inline metal detector.

Dear Mr. Sarath,

I agree with you.

All test pieces (Fe,N Fe & SS) passes one by one keep with the products and metal detector detecting all the test pieces. 

Mostly metal detector process is included in CCP. 

• ​But my question was- ​if we are using any metal detector then which position of test pieces will give maximum assurance about the detection being accurate.

• One more thing if single point validation is wrong but single point monitoring is acceptable ??.

   For the food safety point of view.

Hi Dear Mr Vinit,

Its a wide question. It depend up on which type of metal detector you are using.Type of product and packaging material. How ever when I was working with frozen vegetable factory.The metal piece in the chopped leafy vegetables were became big head ache for us.We will pack the test piece inside the specially labelled packet and pass through it one by one.

Dear vinit

Shall refer metal detector manual and ask help from a technician to know about the fuctioning of MD.
For better verification procedure efficiency of MD shall be tested with test piece alone first and also by keeping test piece with product.in both 2methods sensing shall ensure in all the angles and MD should show 100% efficiency.
Metal detector may not be a CCP in all the company. Based on the hazard analysis can identify whether MD is a CCP in your process flow. Even if  hazard analysis identified MD is not a CCP some of the international food safety standards like BRC clause says to implement 100% product metal detection.
