Certificate validity is two years. Food code is specifying about giving refresher and not re training on an yearly basis. Refresher can be conducted internally.
Best Regards

Hi Colleagues

DMFCD will need to provide the answer to this question but 6.3 “Continued Educational Training” does not clarify the position.

The Basic Food Hygiene Qualification is not mentioned.

6.3.b states “Food handlers should participate in a refresher or updating course after one year of training or, shall be retrained if deterioration of food handling practices is noticed.

Subject to the views of the Municipality the best way to meet these requirements would be to undertake a training needs analysis and design a refresher course to target the deficiencies in knowledge and competency of the food handlers. On occasions this may be the original course but there is no point teaching people what they already know as this may have a detrimental effect on their motivation and implementation.

6.3. c. Makes it clear that the level of training should vary  based on the food safety risk so this section relates to more than the BFHQ

If there is an intention to require food handlers to attend an annual BFHQ then it would be preferable for the Food Code to be amended

Dear All,

Today a friend asked me if a catering unit serving food to children in school is exempted from being HACCP certified. I always thought especially they need to be certified, but that company is not and operates now since 3 years.

Does anyone know if they have to be or not? I am a bit worried if they dont have to be, serving allergen free foods and serving food to 3 year old children!

Thank you all!

Kind regards,

Aurelia

Hi Rex,

Good Day!

You need to contact  or go to DM Al Tawar Food Control Section, for the necessary documents to submit and become internal trainer in your company.

Rex,
1. I wish the focus of discussion was on 'competency' and not on the 'expiration' date printed on the certificate.

2. Our inspections officers can raise a violation if the food handler or the PIC is not able to demonstrate knowledge at work. They have specific instructions not to worry about the validity of the 'certificate' even if it is one day old.

3. An organisation must have a system in place to reinforce what food handlers are taught. There is no point in teaching food handlers 'how to wash hands' every year or 'every two years' in the name of 'Basic food hygiene' if practices are not followed. Well, if they follow the rules, you wouldn't even think of putting them on the same course (unless there is an update).

4. Advance learning. Make sure you have a program to increase knowledge. A refresher
Program should include new information and any old information that needs reinforcement. Program it the way you want to based on your organisation's objectives. You can do that in consultation with your external trainer too- but customise it!

5. If there is a date printed on the certificate, the certificate is valid for that time specified. But, if it's not, it's valid for ever.
Check with your training provider whether their Certificate has a 'legal' date of expiry.

Dear All,

Hope there is no confusion about the validity period of Basic Food Hygiene (BFH) after the new discussion about the old question(???)

But few things to clarify..

1.The time period between first BFH training and the deterioration of competency of the food handler (The validity period of BFH) ....Who is authorized to decide that?Only DM inspectors?

2.If the competency level is not satisfactory or they violate rules of food safety ,they have to be retrained...

a)These refresher or retraining documents to be attested by DM?
b)This training to be done by whom?  DM approved trainer?

3.If they demonstrate good knowledge what is recommended as a next level of food safety training?
Is it just a recommendation or a regulatory requirement?

Best Regards
