Dear All,

Greetings of the day!

Would appreciate if someone can confirm if DRIED ROSE PETALS is included in this prohibition by the DM circular. The said item is being purchased with a certain herbs and spices supplier in Dubai.

Thank you in advance,
Ron

Sharlen

The ban is not on flowers- cauliflower, broccoli, saffron, rose petals, hibiscus, chamomile  etc are all flowers that can still be eaten!

The ban is on use of flowers that are used for decoration of RTE foods. Such flowers are treated or preserved and could have microbial contaminants too as they are not handled as foods.

So, when you make a cake, don’t throw random flowers on it!

Hi Bobby,

What is the risk- Microbial or chemical?

Can you please share some more details on the risk analysis?  Was there any outbreak related to edible flowers- rose petals?

Thanks & Kind Regards

Dear Bobby,

Thank you for below explanation.

Further to Tisha query, please provide full list of flowers those can be used and those are banned. If there is no such list then please provide more details which should be considered for using or not using the flowers.

Please advise can we use flowers:

* if they are handled as food.
* if they are not used for decoration and part of preparation.
* if we have done our hazard analysis and flowers found to be safe to use and categorized low risk.

Currently, our team is very much confused because of the social media buzz. Please advise.

Thank you for continuous support and guidance.

To keep things simple, if the supplier has registered the flowers (at the time of import) as food, then it is a food and not a ‘decorative’ flower.

So, you get your flowers from a food supplier and not a florist!
