Telegraph - What will Tesco do now in Banbridge, Ireland ? By Lindsay
Fergus Wednesday, 2 December 2009
* Tesco store plan rejected again
Supermarket giant Tesco is keeping tightlipped about expansion plans
for its existing Banbridge store after being refused planning
permission for a megastore on the outskirts of the south Down town.
Retailers in the town, who are unopposed to the expansion, have said
there is enough room in the market town for the multi-national
supermarket and independent stores.
The retail giant is licking its wounds after plans to open a 130,000
sq ft store at Bridgewater Retail Park, beside The Outlet, failed at
the final hurdle.
Despite the rejection, all is not lost for Tesco which has not yet
acted on planning permission it received several years ago to extend
its existing store at Castlewellan Road in Banbridge to just under
60,000 square feet.
However, when asked about the possibility of expanding its current
store, which would provide a much-needed boost to the construction
industry, Tesco said: “In the light of this negative decision, and
when we receive the full report from the minister’s office via the
developer, we will now carefully consider our options for Banbridge.”
The Northern Ireland Independent Retail Trade Association (NIIRTA) has
called on Tesco to proceed with its original plans to further develop
the Castlewellan Road site.
“Both NIIRTA and Banbridge Chamber of Commerce are on record saying
that we would support an increase in size of the existing Tesco store
in Banbridge. We had put this forward in the past as a compromise and
we believe this is a serious option,” Glyn Roberts said.
“An expansion at Tesco on the Castlewellan Road, at the edge of the
town centre, is the lesser of two evils. Around 60% of people who shop
at that store go into the rest of the town and vice versa.
“Banbridge needs to remain a centre of retail excellence and go from
strength-to-strength. Both Tesco and The Outlet have a role to play in
this.”
A question mark now also hangs over the 130,000 sq ft site at
Bridgewater Park which is owned by Land Securities Group and GML
Estates.
A spokesperson for the developers said: “We are disappointed by the
decision which is a missed opportunity for the wider Banbridge area.
“We will now have to consider the detail of the decision and consider
the next steps for the site.”
The Tesco superstore would have created hundreds of jobs for the area
which has seen some of the sharpest spikes in unemployment in Northern
Ireland.
Meanwhile, Tesco has been given the green light for a new Tesco
Superstore in Newtownards as part of the Castlebawn development.
“We are delighted that this store, which will bring with it up to 200
new high-quality, flexible jobs for Newtownards, has been given
approval,” Gary Mills, director for Tesco in Northern Ireland,
said.“It is also excellent news for the construction industry as this
development will create employment for around 200 people in the
building trade over a 12-18-month period.”

Tesco store plan rejected again - Tuesday, 1 December 2009
Plans to build Ireland’s largest Tesco store near Banbridge have been
rejected for a second time, it has emerged.A recommendation by the
Planning Appeals Commission to knock back the proposals has been
accepted by Environment Minister Edwin Poots. But it has been claimed
that the decision could deprive the area of 600 jobs.
The retailing giant had applied for permission to build a 130,000sq ft
store at the Bridgewater Park complex.
The plans were initially turned down in 2008 but that decision was
appealed by the supermarket.
That appeal now looks to have been unsuccessful. A Tesco spokesman
said he could not comment because the store has not yet been
officially notified.
Banbridge SDLP councillor Seamus Doyle said it was a missed
opportunity for the town.
“It is very disappointing and will probably mean we lose out on 600
jobs,” he said.
