Hi, all --

Here are two events that are both happening on Friday night, Dec. 6 -- one in Chicago, one in Evanston;  one in a Greek context, one in a Jewish context; one in a museum context, one in a synagogue context.   One event speaks directly about food, the other speaks directly about the primary nurturers in human societies -- women -- and the primary nurturees that all human societies must care about if they want to survive  -- children.

The presenters both know their stuff:  Nikki Rose (who I have met) is totally fun, passionate, and real.   Ruth Messinger I hear is a very dynamic person (I have not met her).

Both are doing follow-up events on Saturday morning, Dec. 7.   So if you opt for one culture on Friday night, you can catch the other culture on Saturday morning.

All events are free except for #4.

Here's the basics on the four events (additional details and context below my signature):

1.  Presentation at the National Hellenic Museum
Chef Nikki Rose, Founder of the award-winning Crete’s Culinary Sanctuaries Eco-Agritourism Network
Author of “Crete: The Roots of the Mediterranean Diet, enjoying the benefits of one of the world‘s healthiest cuisines wherever you live.“
Presentation followed by book signing. Book proceeds benefit CCS initiatives.
Chicago, IL, December 6, 2013, 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

(I believe the National Hellenic Museum is on Halsted, in Greek Town, near Hull House Museum and UIC.)

2.  American Jewish World Service is celebrating the opening of its Chicago office (the office is actually in Evanston)
Ruth Messinger will speak on “Empowering Our Sisters: The Struggle for Human Rights of Women and Children in the Developing World”
6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6 at Beth Emet Synagogue, 1224 Dempster, Evanston.
Contact:  Taal Hasak-Lowry, Exec. Director - AJWS Chicago   847/644-0954

Ruth Messinger is the Exec. Director of AJWS (based in New York).

..... the human world would never be successfully legislated into goodness if the legislated and legislators couldn't see the Holy in Nature and were not devastated by its beauty and the innate mythological ritual process of such vision so as to do what was best, not because of a law but out of utter admiration.

Greetings Debbie!

I hope all is well.

Here's the announcement about my presentation in Chicago on December 6th. I hope you and your colleagues can join us! My presentation is focused on the people that provide our good/safe food sources - those working hard to celebrate and protect our heritage -- organic farmers, small-scale fishers, artisan food producers, chefs and ecologists. I will also be speaking on December 7th for the Culinary Historians of Chicago. Those details to come.

All the best,
Nikki

Chicago, IL, December 6, 2013, 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm: Presentation at the National Hellenic Museum by Chef Nikki Rose, Founder of the award-winning Crete’s Culinary Sanctuaries Eco-Agritourism Network and author of “Crete: The Roots of the Mediterranean Diet, enjoying the benefits of one of the world‘s healthiest cuisines wherever you live.“ Presentation followed by book signing. 2.  Dec. 6, Jewish (Evanston, 6:30 PM)
Article about the American Jewish World Service opening a Chicago-area office.   AJWS already has a food component to their international programming.  I personally am hoping that the Chicago-area food-and-farm groups can help AJWS develop more of a policy component (which would directly impact international work).

'TIKKUN OLAM' - LITERALLY
By Pauline Dubkin Yearwood (11/08/2013)

If you live in the Chicago area, working for social justice around the world just got easier.

American Jewish World Service, a global social justice organization (see separate story) has just opened a Chicago office.

It represents growth for the not-for-profit, as well as the increasing importance of the Chicago area in the social justice world, according to AJWS President Ruth Messinger.

For those who don't know Hebrew, here is some words about what "Tikkun Olam" means.   It's a phrase that serves as a guiding light for many 21st century Jews and Jewish organizations.

Wikipedia:  Tikkun olam (Hebrewתיקון עולם or תקון עולם[1]‎) is a Hebrew phrase that means "repairing the world" (or "healing the world") which suggests humanity's shared responsibility to heal, repair and transform the world. In Judaism, the concept of tikkun olam originated in the early rabbinic period. The concept was given new meanings in the kabbalah of the medieval period and has come to possess further connotations in modern Judaism.

Tikkun magazine's tagline:  To heal, repair, and transform the world.

3.  American Jewish World Service
North Shore Congregation Israel, 1185 Sheridan Rd., Glencoe
9:15    Ruth Messinger  (morning services)
11:15  Clauda Samayoa:  human rights work in Guatemala

If you've never been inside this striking building on Sheridan Road -- a synagogue designed by a Japanese architect -- this would be an opportunity.    It's a very active congregation.
