Hi all - I wanted to share this volunteer opportunity. As I understand it, volunteers help pick up the food from UNCA (different groups have different days), then help divide it up to go out to folks who need it at the school AND they get to bring some containers to take home some food to their families too. I like that part because often volunteering means you have to pick up food on the way home etc. and this is a cool way that people can help out and get a little payback too.

Hi D!

I’m attaching a flyer about the MusicWorks! Food Connection/UNCA collaboration.  If any of your student staff want to volunteer for any of the following, they can contact me.  I totally understand if their volunteer plates are full, but just in case.  I know your focus is on obesity prevention advocacy, but I also thought maybe you work on food insecurity needs as well?  The whole idea behind this collaboration is to:

·        offer food to all students and families in the program, but knowing there are students and families who are in need of food, they can get one healthy meal per week

·        save money and the environment (UNCA has been throwing away about 2000lbs of food per week)

·        community building

FoodWorks! Volunteers NEEDED!

As FoodWorks! is set to serve its first free healthy takeout meal next Wednesday at 5:15pm, we need to ensure the program sustains itself. This requires the assistance of parent volunteers. FoodWorks! is currently seeking volunteers for the following opportunities:

Morning food pickup:  Volunteer will drive to UNCA- Brown Hall and pick up the food (8 containers or so) between 8:30am-9:00am.  More specific details about building and parking will be available.  Volunteer will then drop off the food to be temporarily stored at Trinity United Methodist Church’s refrigerator (587 Haywood Road West Asheville) until the late afternoon pick up.

Afternoon food pickup: Volunteer will drive to Trinity United Methodist Church and pick up food (8 containers or so) at Trinity United Methodist Church at 4:30pm.  Volunteer will then dive to Hall Fletcher Elementary to deliver food to the school where volunteers will serve food.

Servers (need 2 minimum):  Volunteers will be at Hall Fletcher Elementary no later than 4:45pm to set up two tables and food. Volunteers will serve food for families to take home starting from 5:15pm-5:45pm.  Thereafter, they will help clean up and dispose of any leftover food which will likely last until 6:00pm.
