Overview
Accepting
the
Supplemental
Nutrition
Assistance
Program
("SNAP",
formerly known
as Food Stamps
and also known
as FSP or the
Independence
card in
Maryland) in
farmers
markets helps
low-income
families and
individuals
access fresh,
locally grown
food and
provides
economic
benefits to
communities. But
implementing a
SNAP program
at the farmers
market or
accepting it
as a
direct-marketing
farmer comes
with
challenges
such as
technology
hurdles,
administrative
burdens, and
regulatory
requirements.
Webinar
This
Coffee Talk
will provide
an overview of
SNAP benefits,
what has
changed at the
national
level, and how
DC was able to
help implement
supportive
policy to
increase
incentives for
SNAP sales.
Action
Steps
In
September, Amy
Crone will
lead a
conference
call
discussion to
better
understand
regional
barriers to
SNAP
implementation.
These
barriers will
be cataloged
with the
purpose of
determining a
means for
addressing the
challenges.
The goal is
to develop an
advocacy
platform for
the 2016
Session.

What
are the Coffee
Talks?
The
Chesapeake
Foodshed
Network's
Coffee Talks
are a monthly
series of
45-minute
webinars on a
variety of
food system
topics. The
purpose of the
Coffee Talks
is to serve as
a starting
point for
collective
action by
providing
learning on a
specific issue
and by
providing a
way for people
to continue to
be linked in
after the
webinar with
others doing
similar work.
We
invite food
system
resource
experts to use
the Coffee
Talk platform
to engage with
a broader
audience.
Contact
us if you
would like to
lead a Coffee
Talk.
