Please find a list of news and community events occurring in June
attached in this email. Just a reminder that the KWIC office will be
closed for the summer as of June 25, 2010. Thank you for your continued

The Kawartha World Issues Centre is a charitable global education and
resource centre which promotes understanding and dialogue of world
issues to enable people to engage in positive social and environmental

Community Events for June 2010

1. The Great Potato Planting
This is one of the most important plantings for the Seasoned Spoon, as
the majority of our potatoes come from the Trent Gardens. Bring lots of
water, a lunch, a hat and sunscreen. Be prepared to get dirty and have a
great time.

2. Peterborough Community Mobilization Network: Legal Workshop and
General Assembly
Come and learn about your legal rights on the ground in Toronto, and in
your day-to-day activism. Find out find out what’s been planned, what
kind of events will be in place for the G8/G20 summit and how PCMN can
support you during the mobilization against the G8/20 in Toronto.

3. A Staged Reading of OLEANNA by David Mamet
Oleanna is one of Mamet’s most successful plays; New Stages’ staged

4. Web Tools for Social Justice Organizing - Free Workshop
Facebook, podcasts, blogs, RSS feeds, Twitter - find out what these web
tools are and how you can use them for community and social justice
organizing. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops.

5. Green Drinks Meeting
Green Drinks is mostly for people working on environmental issues, but
anyone can come -- people from environment groups, business, government,
academia and as individuals.

7. Celebrating Indigenous Knowledge: Peoples, Lands and Cultures
Conference
A four day international conference held by the Trent Indigenous
Studies Department celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Indigenous
Studies Phd program. The conference includes key note speeches by
Elders, performances, and presentations.

11. Ode'min Giizis Festival
Presented by O'Kaadenigan Wiingashk (OKW) and Public Energy in
Peterborough, Ontario. From June 16-21st, 2010, over 200 Indigenous
artists, including musicians, performers, visual artists, writers,
storytellers, artisans and dancers will gather to expand our imagination
and dreams while pushing the boundaries of their art forms. The Festival
culminates in a parade and Pow Wow June 20-21.

12. The 2010 People's Summit: Building a Movement for a Just World
The 2010 People’s Summit is civil society’s alternative “counter
Summit” to the G8 and G20 Summits happening in Huntsville and Toronto
this June 25th - 27th. Community organizers, activists,
non-governmental organizations, independent media, workers, impacted
communities, artists - the people - converge this June to work together
to educate, empower and create positive change.

13. Oxfam Gender Justice Summit
Members and partner groups from across the country and around the globe
will gather for three days of ideas, debates, success stories, and
strategies to discuss issues on gender justice.

14. Sharing and discussion: Where I Came From
World Refugee Day Event: A discussion where Jean-Claude and Khadija,
two refugees to Canada from Burundi and Somalia respectively, will share

15. Connecting Worker’s Struggles and Building Solidarity: Future
Folk
Future Folk is a performance written and performed by the Sulong
Theatre Collective. Filipino folk arts to tell the story of Filipina
“nannies” in Toronto and their labour under Canada’s notorious
Live-In Caregiver Program.

16. B!KE is Offering Monthly Mechanic Courses
The Peterborough community bike shop will be offering small, intensive
classes covering a specific component of the bike each month.

17. Two Row Wampum making Workshop
Taught by Lynn Gehl, this workshop is held in the afternoon in
Peterborough. The cost is $75.00 (cash only) and covers a
demonstration, guided instructions, and all supplies - loom, sinew,
beads, needle, as well as written instructions.

18. Rainbow Service Organization (RSO) Annual General Meeting

19. Citizens for Safe Technology presents: A Lecture by Dr. Madga
Havas, PhD.
Dr. Magda Havas, International lecturer and author of the latest

20. Youth Justice Event
A day of free, interactive sessions for young people, educators,
parents, social agencies and the general public on youth rights in our
schools, on the street, in malls and in the justice system.

21. Global Shout Out for Justice
An event featuring Maude Barlow, Naomi Klein, Amy Goodman, Vandana
Shiva, Clayton Thomas-Mueller and others; presented by the Council of

Community Information:

1. New Lakefield Farmer’s Market
The Lakefield Farmers’ Market is a new seasonal market in Lakefield
that will be open every Thursday from May 6th until October 14th. Hours
of operation are 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., with extended hours during the
summer. The market is located beside Isabel Morris Park and the
Lakefield arena, close to the Otonabee River waterfront.

2. The Seasoned Spoon is open!
New summer hours for the Seasoned Spoon at Trent University
When: Monday to Thursday, 10-2:30pm from May 10th to July 30th

3. Trent Rooftop Gardens are looking for volunteers!
There will be lots of opportunities for volunteers to learn and grow
together this season. If you just want to get your hands dirty, or if
you would like to organize a TCCBE project for credit, we can make it
happen. There will be activities that could use a group effort taking
place every Monday and Thursday starting at 8a.m. For more information

4. Developing a Community Garden at Charlotte and Stewart Streets
A grassroots organization garden is asking for contributions from the
Peterborough community members to start a community garden.

5. Get involved in social justice right here at home!
Pueblito is looking for people 16 to 25 years old who are interested in
learning about and working toward social justice as part of the Pueblito

8. 15th Annual Wanapitei Aboriginal History and Politics
Colloquium: Call for Papers
The Colloquium is affiliated with the annual Trent University Temagami
Field Trip, the Frost Centre for Canadian Studies and Indigenous
Studies, Trent University, and the School of Canadian Studies, Carleton
University. Please email your abstracts for papers and ideas for

Our registration deadline for all participants is August 13, 2010.
We urge you to participate in other ways, such as chairing a session

9. Safe and Green Energy (SAGE): Public Consultation
You are invited to attend and/or make a presentation at Safe And Green
Energy’s (SAGE) Public Consultation on the proposed Nuclear Newbuild
at the Darlington Nuclear Plant. Your opinions, concerns and arguments
about this newbuild nuclear project will be considered for SAGE’s
submission to theproject’s Environmental Assessment. Those choosing to
make a personal presentation must register by June 25.
