From what I can tell, it's not the type of font that crashes PIL, but some
malformed internals of those files that does. It's especially fragile around
the family property.
I had a look at your script (nice) as well as the python-magic module but I
can't see how it would enhance Fonty. Nice to know about though.

The latest wrinkle in PIL is that fetching the family name does not encode
into a string properly - I get mojibake from font family - this means I can't
relay that family name out to gucharmap or display it Fonty properly.
