I really don't get how to use it

So I downloaded an "off" sign from gontello and shortened the demo.html file to the minimum requirements. Then I just took the demo and put the style stuff in my css sheet and the html stuff right where I need it. I also changed the path to various things. First I tried to change it from the folder with the html file in it, then I tried from where the css file lies. But it all just shows me that placeholder.
