If you need your records faster, you are strongly encouraged to utilize the Express Delivery option or to check for walk-in locations near you for current hours of operation. The Code of Virginia requires a cost of $12.00 per certificate search. There is no refund if the certificate is not found. An exception is a Certificate of Birth Resulting in Stillbirth, which have no cost. A fee of $10 is charged for making an amendment to an existing record.


At the State Office of Vital Records, birth records are available from January 1919 to the present. For records older than 1919, please contact the county in which the birth occurred or the Georgia Archives.


You may request a certified copy of a birth certificate from your local county office or the State Office of Vital Records. This request can be made in person or by mail. You can also request certified copies online using one of our approved third-party vendors (GO Certificates, ROVER, and Vital Chek).


General Amendments: A general amendment is defined as a change that is made to a certificate after 1 year of age. Amendments can occur due to a legal name change, adoption, legitimation, adding of a spouse and/or paternity acknowledgement.


Although vital records are public documents under California law, birth certificates are not open for public inspection. Anyone may request copies, however only persons authorized under California law may receive authorized certified copies of birth records. Those who are not authorized to receive an authorized certified copy will receive an authorized certified copy marked INFORMATIONAL, NOT A VALID DOCUMENT TO ESTABLISH IDENTITY.


If you are submitting your order by mail, you must sign the sworn statement in the presence of a notary public and the notary public must also fill out a Certificate of Acknowledgment. If your mailed request indicates that you want an authorized certified copy, but does not include a notarized statement, the request will be considered incomplete and returned unprocessed.


The fee for birth certificate copies must be paid in advance by the applicant. If no record of the event is found, the fee will be retained for searching as required by California statute, and a Certificate of No Record Found will be issued.

To remove a father's/second parent's name from a birth certificate, you must submit a copy of certified court documents showing paternity/parentage determination with a completed data worksheet for the new birth certificate.


Court-determined paternity/parentage documents are required to add, remove or change a father's/second parent's name on a birth certificate when another individual is shown as the parent of the child on the original certificate.


A new certificate may be prepared only when a determination of paternity/parentage is made by a court of competent jurisdiction or following adoption. A divorce decree is not acceptable evidence regarding paternity/parentage.


The State Registrar shall change the sex/gender designation pursuant to a request made under Section 5.5(C)(2) only once during an individual's lifetime. Any further amendment to the sex/gender designation on a birth record or certificate requires a court order pursuant to Section 5.5(C)(1).


Due to the increase of vital record requests for the purpose of obtaining a REAL ID, customers are encouraged to plan ahead and order any vital record certified copies they may need in advance.
