Is anyone registering their "drones" (i.e. any model aircraft between .55lbs and 55lbs according to the FAA)?

https://registermyuas.faa.gov/

Feb 19th is the last day to register before flying "illegally", and it costs $5 to register. If you register before tomorrow at midnight EST, it's free. So... anyone registering?

Here is what you have to agree to:

Acknowledgement of Safety Guidance

  • I will fly below 400 feet

  • I will fly within visual line of sight

  • I will be aware of FAA airspace requirements: www.faa.gov/go/uastfr

  • I will not fly directly over people

  • I will not fly over stadiums and sports events

  • I will not fly near emergency response efforts such as fires

  • I will not fly near aircraft, especially near airports

  • I will not fly under the influence

It would seem the "visual line of sight" bullet precludes FPV

I think I will register to save the $5. I am not sure what the procedure is if you are at the park and an officer of the law asks about the registration.

Thanks!
Alex

Here is what you get after you register, the number refers to the certificate number from registration:
  • You MUST mark any and all aircraft with your number before you operate them.

  • The number must be visible without using tools. You may mark it inside the battery compartment if that is accessible. You may use any method to affix the number that ensures it remains visible, including permanent marker, label, or engraving.

  • To operate as a hobbyist, you must operate according to the safety guidance you have acknowledged and in accordance with a community based set of safety guidance. For further information on the safety guidance visitfaa.gov/uas/model_aircraft/

Here is a link to the ruling which specifically excludes FPV and/or a shuman potter from meeting the "visual line of sight" requirement: http://www.faa.gov/uas/publications/media/model_aircraft_spec_rule.pdf

I am not sure how the registration affects us FPVers, in either case we would be doing something against FAA regulations.

Ugh!

Now that you've registered, give me your number and I'll put it on my aircraft too :-)

Are you sure? This is a quote from the certificate "... this document represents a recognition of ownership." meaning if my number is on your aircraft it means I own it ;)

Silliness aside ... the thing that bothers me the most is that they're saying the database will be publicly searchable...

It's not just for drones, it's for all Rc craft above .55 lbs.  I thought it was just for drones until after I received a late X-mass gift from my wife (Blade Chroma).  Against my better judgement or with it (not sure at this point) I registered.  I've already labeled all of my planes that I commonly fly including my new quad.  A couple of friends of mine who are AMA members are holding out in hopes that the might of the AMA can stop this, however I believe the train has left the station on this one.  Like to fly with you guys sometime soon, hopefully.  Been working on a few projects including a scratch build 2M sailplane with retracts and spoilers...almost finished with it.

Another point on why I registered is that the FAA seems to encourage folks to call the cops on Rc pilots and my brother in law who is a deputy was briefed on this.  Of course he also mentioned that cops have better things to do than to harass folks who fly Rc. Yes, I too think it stinks and hopefully things will change once we get a new president...probably not, but one can hope.
