Been trying to get a xbox wireless controller working, but I'm stuck getting a driver to install. I have went to microsoft catalog and tried to manually install it and still no success. I have a correct xbox wireless adapter as i've used it on other machines. Anyone else have this issue or able to replicate?

To resolve this issue, make sure the Wireless adapter is plugged in to your computer. Then use SDIO (Snappy Driver Installer) to find the driver, click the checkmark and install it. Once done, the adapter will work as intended, no reboot is required after install.

To use wireless Xbox 360 controllers, you will also need a USB wireless receiver plugged into your Raspberry Pi. The Official Microsoft Xbox 360 receiver or a generic brand like zettaguard, VicTsing will work. You can pair multiple controllers to a single wireless receiver. Play and charging cables will not work.

The xpad kernel module has the option to interpret the shoulder triggers as button inputs instead of treating the trigger as Axis type inputs. This kind of configuration was default in RetroPie until April 2024 to fix an incompatibility with older EmulationStation version, but since this configuration causes conflicts with SDL's gamepad mappings for Xbox wired controllers, it has been removed.

If you wish to retain the previous behavior or to fix the detection of buttons for gamepads that just mimic an Xbox 360 controller (in order to maintain compatibility with Windows), then running the following command will add back the 'trigger to buttons' option to the xpad configuration:
