Over time, the brotherhood's policies evolved and during the Italian Renaissance, the Assassins under the leadership of Ezio Auditore became more active at winning the hearts of the public. It was Ezio's conviction that the strength of the Assassins derived from the strength of the common people, a sentiment initially rebuffed by the cynical Mentor Niccolò Machiavelli. Accordingly, the Assassins' campaign in Rome was prolific in rehabilitating a city crumbling under the weight of Borgia corruption, such as funding renovations, sponsoring merchants, and rescuing civilians.[4][30]
Defeating the corrupt tyrants entrenched there will require not only strength, but leadership, as Ezio commands an entire brotherhood of Assassins who will rally to his side. Only by working together can the Assassins defeat their mortal enemies and prevent the extinction of their order.
An assassin's work - a bit like a postman's perhaps - is never done. Ezio Auditore's only just got back to his villa after prosecuting that whole blood-soaked vengeance deal at the end of Assassin's Creed II, and all of us a sudden there's cannon-fire shredding his bedroom as he tries to enjoy himself with a friendly lady. What a drag.
It also revolves around squads, but you'll rarely find yourself thinking about them that way. The latest game's main storyline quickly dumps you into a Rome made tatty by Templar rule. It's 1503, there's fear in streets and disco in the clubs, and Ezio's job is to form his own assassin's guild - a brotherhood that will clean up the city and bring hope to the populace in the process.
