However the PDF also shows that faux bold style is applied to fonts that do not have bold style mapped (this does not show for all fonts on screen, only in PDF) -- is there a way to prevent LO from using faux styles?
I opened your ODT document and took a look - you are applying the Bold button to fonts which have no bold in their style group.
So you are of course getting fake bold.
Most of those fonts only have two fonts in their respective style groups - regular and italic.
Work Sans Thin style group has: Work Sans Thin (regular), Work Sans Thin Italic
Work Sans Light style group has: Work Sans Light (regular), Work Sans Light Italic
Etc., etc.
The Light style group has no bold in the style group so when you click the Bold button LO gives you a fake bold.
Work Sans style group has: Work Sans (regular), Work Sans Italic, Work Sans Bold, Work Sans Bold Italic
So both the Bold and Italic buttons work properly with that style group.
Take a look at my notations above on the right about which buttons were used for each style.
...so similarly as with Work Sans, Affinity apps do not seem to read the four-style mapping at all, but simply select the bold style (700) of a typographic family, when the B button is on, and regular style (400), when the B button is off.
Yes, these seem to be hard-coded into APub so anything beyond the basic R/I/B/BI does not work properly.
Such as your Medium/Heavy example above.
And since everything above bold auto-selects the Bold button, you cannot use the Italic button alone on those weights.
I was going to test ITC Avant Garde Pro after Avenir, but Avenir was so bad I did not bother.
Avant Garde has the Regular font and the Bold font are in two different style groups.
Bold has a weight setting of 800, but I do not know how APub is grouping them.
Does it simply connect the 400 and 700 weights?
And the Typographic Family name and the Style Group Family name are different.
I cannot imagine what APub is going to do with that font family.
Third: LibreOffice macOS version behaves exactly as Affinity apps in that B and I buttons and equivalent keyboard shortcuts are used as shortcuts to select Regular, Bold, Italic and Bold Italic versions of the currently active width class, so the traditional four-style mapping is not honored (nor does this produce faux styles as on Windows). This also means that these commands cannot always be used as toggles:
I am not sure if it is absolutely obligatory to even specify Name IDs 1 and 2, but I have never seen a font that does not have them defined, and font validation routines would definitely complain about missing items in the name table.
EDIT: for example, say a font family comes with 10-15 weights ranging from extra thin to a very heavy black. If I select some extra thin text, what if anything should the "B" button or shortcut switch that text to? How should it determine if one of the heavier weights is the 'natural' bold version of that extra thin weight?
Eventually, we may hope that a wider and more consistent implementation of the STAT (Style Attributes) table (OpenType 1.8, September 2016), both in font files and end-user applications, will resolve most of these issues. From what I can tell from the glyphsapp.com article, style linking is optional & there are only guidelines for how many styles should be linked to each other, & how many should not be linked to any others. This seems to make 'natural' linking something of a guessing game from an end user standpoint.
OK, so assuming style linking has been done properly, the main issue with Affinity is it either ignores the links or misinterprets them, with the result that the B & I buttons (& the shortcuts) toggle to the wrong style, & may be enabled when there is no style linked to the current one.
InDesign problem however persisted, and I realized that it is related to using an identical name as style group with the font general family name. InDesign does not like this, and as I checked, it seems that e.g. Adobe provided fonts don't do that (but did not check many). I removed the space from the Style Group in Regular, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic styles:
However the latest version of the font behaves oddly in latest version of LibreOffice macOS version. Many font substyles are not even listed in LibreOffice menus even if they appear in other apps and get all green from Font Book validation routine. This might well be Big Sur and/or M1-related glitch.
In "office" apps which use style groups the only thing users see in the font menu is the base (regular) font.
The italic and bold fonts are only accessible by using the Bold and Italic buttons.
This often confuses office users, especially when there is more than one R/I/B/BI style group.
For example the Ubuntu fonts have two R/I/B/BI style groups, and the Medium is the "bold" of the Light style group.
So the Medium does not appear in the main LibreOffice font list - which leads to bug reports in the tracker.
Users have no way of knowing the Ubuntu fonts have two style groups or how this works without any docs or interface clues.
Yes, it is odd. But the Style group names seem to be unique also in relation to main Family name in some super families like Helvetica Neue (see above the TransType 4 screenshot). FontLab also suggests the same name for both when it autobuilds names. Perhaps it has something to do with multiple weight mappings within the same width.
Font families which use numbered weights often do not fit into the the standard naming conventions.
I have tested Helvetica Neue LT W1G in LibreOffice on Windows and it works fine.
You just have to know which fonts are in which style group.
But it does not need to be a complex superfamily to get confused results: when I tested old Type 1 ITC AvantGarde, just four basic styles, Publisher grayed out the B button (as if bold-like style were not available). But pressing I would then activate Bold Italic! The fonts, when selected from style menus work all fine, and they work all fine in Adobe apps and CorelDRAW.
