Interesting article. Your thoughts??

Dave R

Former Trader Joe's President Doug Rauch is in the news this week for his announcement that he plans to open an urban grocery in Boston (Dorchester) that sells foods that have are near or past their expiration date. He sees it as dually combating food waste and food insecurity in a traditionally low income neighborhood. Full story here.

My question for you:

I'm SURE there are other programs / restaurants / groceries doing this out there -- what/where are they? (as in actual stores/restaurants, not just vigilante groups doing food rescuing :)

Thanks in advance!

great article, sounds like a brand new concept, food outlet shopping.
Not sure how we would find out who else is doing it around here, actually selling leftovers would take all kinds of licenses, insurances out the wazoo etc. That's why the foodilantis are so popular, the stores can give it away without liabilities.

Don't think that T.J. store in Boston is going to have a problem with image, I have a feeling it'll be swamped. Too many realistic people that put need before image. I mean Marshall's, T.J. Max and other kinds of true outlet stores have no problem existing. Food outlet is cool, I'd go there for sure.
I think it'll be a long time before Charlottesville would get into it, though. But then, we're the Transitioners, right?
any other thoughts from anybody else?

I often thought this would be a great way to reduce waste of perfectly fine food. Especially having healthier options at lower prices to compare to cheap industrial junk food could lower "the barrier of entry" for people. However I'd argue that price differences are merely superficial. Having a cup of rice and a squash for $2.50 can feed many whereas a $1 hamburger not so much.

Not sure if the health department has a say in almost expired food items.

my 2 cents

Just picked up the new Food Banks brochure, they're shifting much of their canned products to fresh produce.  very interesting.
