I think the layers are parts rather than subclasses

Should they be also subclasses of Organ component layer?

The def says: "Organ component which is a part of a wall of an organ." but I note that Neural layer of retina is a subclass of  it and that's not considered a wall (is it?).

I wonder if there ought to be a class for neural layers - as they seem to play an important role in the organization of the brain.

you are right

the class X layer can be a subclass of Y layer
X layers themselves cannot be a subclass of anything

What does 'it' refer to?

Agreed. I was referring to the class X layer.

'Neural layer of retina' is_a 'Organ component layer'

'Organ component layer' =def: "Organ component which is a part of a wall of an organ"

I am questioning whether 'Neural layer of retina' is a part of a wall of an organ.

I agree. I have reassigned the other classes:

Subdivision of nucleus of neuraxis (IS-A hierarchy)
Layer of dorsal nucleus of lateral geniculate body
Parvocellular layer of dorsal nucleus of lateral geniculate body
Magnocellular layer of dorsal nucleus of lateral geniculate body
Koniocellular layer of dorsal nucleus of lateral geniculate body

Neural layer of retina is part of retina which is part of wall of eyeball. The important question is, which I need to verify, is whether the neural layer of the retina is in fact an organ component (made up of tissues) or an anatomical cluster of cell parts. Remember that gray matter and white matter are not tissues but are anatomical clusters of cell parts (predominantly somas and neurites, respectively). So layers of gray matter and white matter are not "organ components".
