Linux Bandwidth Arbitrator 2.1 CD distribution
by astormchaser (http://freshmeat.net/~astormchaser/)
Wednesday, July 16th 2003 22:28

About:
Linux Bandwidth Arbitrator allows beginning-to-advanced network
administrators to control bandwidth. It is designed to be completely
turn-key in its default configuration. You just plug it into your network
trunk, and it self configures and immediately starts slowing "bandwidth
hogs". It also comes with finer controls that are easy to use, and can be
configured to target specific applications such as Kazaa, IMAP, and POP.
Traffic can be limited by host IP, subnet, and content blocking.

Changes:
The CD distro bundles the Linux Bandwidth Arbitrator on a fully
self-contained CD. You can plug this CD into a PC with two LAN cards and
have a running arbitrator in minutes. Also bundled on the CD are advanced
reporting tools to report usage by host/subnet, application, or port in a
variety of formats.

It is no longer necessary to understand any Linux syntax to start up and
use the Demo CD. The Web server that supports the GUI will now start
automatically just by booting the CD. The firewall rules may now be easily
set up and saved from the GUI. This makes the bootable demo CD something
that "non-Linux-trained" network administrators can try out in a few
minutes without any Linux knowledge.

as Bearshare and Kazaa and see who is using them and how much bandwidth

brouter (bridging router). It also comes with denial of service
protection.

Changes:
This release introduces a commercial quality bandwidth metering utility
that can be activated from the GUI. It monitors accumulated bandwidth by
hour, day, or month for users you select. It allows you to automatically
take action when a user exceeds bandwidth; you can restrict, send email,
etc. Also in this release is the hard limit feature (non-burstable
bandwidth limits). This new limit capability augments the burstable limit,
and you can have up to 4000 without impacting the CPU.

This allows users to protect their network from many types of worms that
hijack computers and send storms of traffic. With a single command, a
systemwide connection limit can be set which applies to all hosts,
external or internal to your network. If any host starts sending large
numbers of messages, it will automatically be shut down. This release also

totally free with a two hour time limit. New features include the
addition of the User limit utility into the GUI (which was previously
