I throw this just as an idea for a more or less distant future: Scriptaculous is dead as a Dodo and latest release is from 2010 (almost ten years old!) ...time to plan a departure, if you ask me :-)

Random ideas:

 - switch to something modern and maintained but not too distant from vanilla JavaScript, like jQuery (or stick to plain vanilla JS, it's latest iterations have embraced modern concepts like jQuery did). This occurred to me while thinking about how to change the search experience for the better (look at my comment on FS#1972)

 - same could be said for CSS (or embrace a modern framework like Bootstrap or something similar)

 - in a distant future (I mean, years at this pace) I could see FS become mainly the backend, with a clean API. On top of that you would build a frontend, for example with React (if it'll still be around :D)
