Want a Vacation Get-Away

Dear Friends,

What is it about going on vacation that makes it worth all the preparation and hassle? Is it getting away from the phone? I don't think so; most of us have our personal cell phones. Is it getting to seeing new places?

Maybe but many of us usually want to go back to old familiar areas. Is it the food? It could be, or is the fact that cooking is not hard in an efficient clean kitchen.

How about the people? They are usually the same ones you have at home. So what is it about being in a different place with the same people? Could it be that the surroundings do not choke you!

Hotel rooms are sparse: Two beds, a desk, one bathroom, a night table, one small closet, a little dining table and maybe a little refrigerator. Hey I am leaving the Television and video games out. Ignore them. Let's say you rent a condo at the beach. It has a small kitchen, two to three bedrooms, a living area, a balcony, a couple of bathrooms and empty closets. The same thing for a house at the lake or a cabin in the woods; they have all the conveniences of home without ALL YOUR CLUTTER!!!

Oh it's not clutter, it is your stuff, I can hear you yelling at me. Well your stuff makes you feel like you need to leave home to breathe. So what does that tell you? Your stuff is killing you. You are uneasy in your own home. Another word for uneasy is disease. Get it?? Your house has become a storage unit for your stuff, not a home.

This is why it feels so good to walk into a sparsely decorated room. The space frees you to breathe without you feeling closed in.

How do we get this vacation feeling in our cluttered homes? By evicting Clutter and Just-in-Case forever! These things have chased you away from your home. They have taken over your residence. They are squatters and it is time to take back your home and make it your sanctuary instead of a storage unit.

Start by Crisis Cleaning: we are attacking the surface clutter that is residing in our favorite hotspots. Spend 15 minutes in the Kitchen, then 15 in the living room and then 15 in the bathroom. Then you get to rest for 15 minutes. Don't skip this step! It is the most important

one.

I promise those few minutes are going to make a difference if you will get up and do it, instead of whining that 15 minutes is not enough time. The clutter will be out of sight and you will start to say to yourself that this doesn't look half bad; even if the floors are dirty. Clutter is what makes your home look awful.

Oh you still don't believe me; then do an experiment. Clear off your coffee table. I mean move everything off into a box and just stand back and look at it. How do you feel? The clean and clear is contagious. Now go put away, give away or throw away everything that is in that box.

You deserve to have a home that hugs you. You can get that vacation get-away by taking babysteps to eliminate your clutter. Set your timer, declutter and put a smile on your face!

Two Minutes Makes My Home Shine

Dear Friends,

Last week I implemented my Two Minutes to Peace in my home. Many of you have been using this fun way to get things done. I sit here looking around my home and I don't see anything that makes me feel bad.

Here is my list of things I have done for two minutes.

  1. Empty the dishwasher
  2. Feather Dust
  3. Clean off the coffee table and decorate
  4. Mop the floors
  5. Detail dust end tables
  6. Sweep the front porch
  7. Sweep the back deck
  8. Clean out the refrigerator
  9. Wipe down kitchen counters
  10. Sweep throw rugs
  11. Plant some basil
  12. Gather trash
  13. Swish and swipe my bathroom
  14. Wipe down cat's feeding window
  15. Shine my sink
  16. Pick a flower for my table
  17. Strip our bed
  18. Make our bed
  19. Clean the ashes out of the fireplace
  20. Recycle magazines
  21. Water plants
  22. Gather items to give away
  23. Put a load of clothes in the washer
  24. Fold a load of clothes
  25. Get cat hair off our red couch
  26. Burn paper clutter (identity sensitivity) in our fireplace
  27. Shine a window
  28. Clean out medicine cabinet
  29. Organized closet
  30. Straighten under bathroom cabinet
  31. Organize the freezer
  32. Closed my eyes to rest them
  33. Sat on my beautiful front porch and admired our pond and flowers
  34. Make a menu plan for next week
  35. Build a grocery list
  36. Write for essay
  37. Fill up my water bottles
  38. Take my supplements
  39. Clean the dogs feeding area
  40. Clean out the car
  41. Planted potatoes in a big pot
  42. Posted an essay on our website
  43. Unpack a suitcase
  44. Repack a suitcase
  45. Start dinner in the Crock Pot
  46. Put things where they belong
  47. Clean out my purse

I have been setting my timer for two minutes and even though I know its power, I am blown away by how wonderful our home looks.

I have done my weekly home blessing two minutes at a time.

I have menu planned two minutes at a time.

I have touched each zone in my home for two minutes at a time.

I have taken care of me two minutes at a time.

I have decluttered two minutes at a time.

I have worked in my yard two minutes at a time.

I have cleaned my car out two minutes at a time.

I have put things back in their place two minutes at a time.

So what excuse have you been making? Please try this method. The true power in the two minute challenge is getting up and moving. You will be so surprised at how many steps you can get in each day if you get up and do just two minutes.

Each day we have a focus. Just spend 2 minutes on this and your week will be productive. On Friday! It is the day we clean out car, diaper bag, purse, and plan a date with your Sweet Darling. Set your timer and try it two minutes at a time. What can you get done today while I talk with you on our Facebook Live Video Podcast.

If you can't figure out what to do next; use my list! You will be just as amazed as I am. Set your timer and get started. Be sure and rest too! My list has been spread out over a whole week. It works out to less than 15 minutes a day. My hotspots are cleared and our home is shining! You can have this too.

May's Habit: Get Up and Move

#26 No Time Limit While Moving in May

Dear FlyLady,

I read your emails every day and I find myself thinking more and more about the life changes for me and my family that have occurred by thinking in babystep/15 minute increments. Weight has been an issue for me almost my entire adult life.

But it wasn't until last night that it hit me. If I can conquer the once-seemingly monumental task of creating a tidy home on a regular basis by babystepping the process, I can do the same with my weight.

Previously, it was so overwhelming to think about losing such a large amount of weight, that any progress would be stamped out by my frustration with the amount of time it took to accomplish even the smallest weight loss. Last night I realized, instead of thinking 'I have 100 pounds to lose' (never even said it out loud let alone shared it with a stranger), I know I can lose five pounds.

Feeling like I've done every crash diet and 90 day exercise regime with no continued success, this thought resonated with me like standing in a belfry and hearing the church bell sound. I can lose five pounds by moving just fifteen minutes at a time. Then, and only then, will I allow myself to think of the next five pounds.

As long as I'm still living there is no time limit, only the ones I impose on myself. Thank you for the no judgment zone your kindness has created where sharing thoughts like these is liberating not scary.

Zone 5 is the living room, family room, or den. But, only focus on one this week. After a few months, you will have them decluttered them all and the detailed cleaning will be a breeze.

Get in the habit of decluttering in small segments of time. Decide what time of day you are going to tackle this little job, set a timer for 15 minutes, and just do it.

The FlyLady is Such a Good Motivator! I Don't Cringe When People Pull Up Unannounced. I am Happy!

I highly recommended this book for any type family or single person no matter what age you or your children are. I was a fly baby for a short time years ago and recently, I found you on fb about 6 months ago. I ordered the book and have really enjoyed the revival in my heart and my house.

AMAZON

I used to cringe in agony when I would see people pull up in the driveway now I don’t. Just like Marla says the husband has started organizing and getting rid of his stuff too. The teenage boys are a work in progress. I loved the tips on , the delicate cycle, storing sheets under the bed( I’ll Have more room in my linen closet and that’s major when you are limited on closet space like us) .

The FlyLady is such a good motivator! I have found my self quoting her and singing the songs. Earlier I was cleaning and was upset about something having water spots and Marla popped in my head and said “that’s your protectionism “ and I moved on.! I so wish I would have stuck with The Flylady years ago when the kids where younger but, so glad to have her now.

11 Simple Steps to Gain Control

Dear Friends,

It absolutely breaks my heart when the people who need the most help want to throw the baby out with the bath water because they will not take a few minutes out of their day to change their thinking. The complaint I have read the most is "how can any one be expected to get anything done in the house if all they do is read emails all day long"!

Many times there are several ugly words tossed in for special effects. Here is the part that totally breaks my heart! The people who are already overwhelmed by their homes can't see how this is going to help them and I don't know how to hug them over the internet! They just need to be told that everything is going to get better if they will just allow the emails to sink in! Many have not read their welcome letter and they expect me to send out just one email a day. They don't know that this is a system of establishing simple little habits that will evolve into effective routines. The emails help us to build these new habits.

Please! Please! Please! If you tell anyone about our group; help them to understand the way the emails work! This is not a magic pill that if you only read one email that you are magically going to get your home clean and get rid of the CHAOS. It takes practice everyday over several months to get those cobwebs cleaned out of your head. This is when the house starts to come together.

We have to address the issues that caused our homes to become filled with clutter and CHAOS! I believe that perfectionism/

procrastination/ paralyzing syndrome is what caused our mess. Oh and let's not forget about guilt and depression that rears its ugly head when we allow the 3 P's to take control of us. So where do we start?

1. Go shine your sink!

2. Get dressed to lace up shoes!

3. Lay out your clothes for tomorrow!

4. Let my emails FLY Wash right over you!

5. Forgive yourself and quit beating yourself up!

6. Jump in right where you are!

7. Take babysteps!

8. Take breaks! And use your timer!

9. Put good fuel into your body!

10. Drink your water!

11. Know that there are hundreds of thousands of people who are just like you! If they can do it; you can too. Your home did not get dirty in a day and it is not going to get clean overnight! BabySteps will get you there!

I love you all and just wish I could hug you!

Where Do I Declutter?

Dear FlyLady,

I have restarted the decluttering process, in a different home from when I first found you. I am decluttering some every day, taking baby steps and seeing some progress. Now I'm wondering: I have several rooms in progress, and I don't know whether to keep doing it randomly like I have been, or should I focus and finish a room? If I focus to finish a room, should it be the neatest one that won't take much work so I can actually see a finished project, or should I start with the areas we spend the most time in? I thought perhaps you might know which works better...

FlyBaby Nancy in Kansas

Dear Nancy,

The main rule you have to remember is not to pull out more than you can put back in an hour. Your perfectionism wants to see the whole room clean at once. This is why we do 27 Fling Boogies!

This is how I got rid of our clutter. I did three 27 Fling Boogies a day for several months. Use our zones to help keep you focused in one room. When we go hog wild decluttering; we usually crash and burn. Decluttering in Babysteps with our 27 Fling Boogies or 5 Minute Room Rescues can reduce your clutter without making you feel like you have to replace it all.

The gradual declutter feels good! Try it! All we ask is that you spend only 15 minutes a day decluttering! This is just 5 minutes in the morning, afternoon and evening!

Make it fun and it will get done!

We have a declutter kit to help you not crash and burn. Please set your timer too!

May's Habit: Get Up and Move

#27 Hula Hooping in May

Dear FlyLady,

I have been reading all these moving in may emails and last week I had a well woman visit where they asked me about exercise and vitamins. Well that combination has really had an effect on me!

Last week I went for a 20 minutes fast paced walk. And I was SPENT. But as the week progressed, I didn't get another chance to get outside for my walk. I have four kids, 4yoDD, 3yoDS, 2yoDS and 3moDS, and I couldn't find a convenient time of day where I could get outside before dark.

I tried a stationary bicycle in the fall, but the one I borrowed ended up being pretty loud and my legs were sore long before I broke a sweat, it just didn't work out.

I needed something quiet (so I wouldn't wake the baby), indoors, cheap, easy and FUN! Well I have had a hula-hoop in the back of my mind now for years, and while wandering through Target yesterday I thought - this is my moving in may solution!

But, I have never learned how to do it! Well, I can practice for 15 minutes right? And within 10 minutes, I had that hoop spinning for more than a minute at a time and I was sweaty! I was sweaty and worn out by 20 minutes! I was having so much fun! I stopped there because the kiddos needed me, but I could totally do this everyday!

And for $8, it was the perfect price! Thanks to all these moving in may emails, I have ended up finding a wonderful fitness solution that I *hope* will help me build up the strength and stamina I have wanted for years.

Thank you!

Flybaby Heather

Zone 5 Mission #2 Tuesday

Dear Friends:

Today I want you to spend 15 minutes getting rid of anything that does not belong in your living room. Things that have gotten thrown in a corner, on a chair, or even the floor. The things that you almost don't even see because they have just become part of the room, get it out! If it does not belong there then out it goes!

This does not mean that you have to spend three hours in your living room, do what you can do for 15 minutes.

FlyKid Mission #2 Tuesday

Hi Kids,

Today we are going to go into our rooms and pick up any clothes we have laying around on the floor, our desks, dressers or chairs. If they are clean - put them away, if they are dirty put them in the dirty clothes basket or hamper. If there are too many to take care of all of them in 15 minutes, you can do this tomorrow too as a bonus challenge!

New Habit for June

Dear Friends,

Here it is already June! Isn't it amazing how time FLYs when you are having fun!

A new month means a new habit to practice! This month we are going to focus on a habit that is going to change how you feel. Many times when we are tired we don't even realize that we are just dehydrated.

June is water month! We are going to drink our water. This one habit is not only going to save you money but it will also help relieve your tiredness. I know it sounds too simple but this one little habit energize you. There are many other benefits too but you will see those as you start to keep up with your water intake.

Have you lost your get up and go and you don't know where it got up and went? Many of us have this problem.

The answer may surprise you!!!

You are dehydrated! Yes you heard me. You are not drinking enough water; I did not say liquids, I said water.

You know how much water you need to drink. 8- 8oz.glasses, is the recommended about for normal height and weight. Don't email me on this. It is up to you to figure out what is right for you. I have some tips for reminding yourself to drink your water. Look at the 8oz measuring cup, that is really small, when you think about this. One member uses a nice tea cup for her water. It is small and makes her feel good when she uses it.

1. Put up post-it notes to remind you; Bright red or neon. Any color

to get your attention.

2. Get 4-16 oz bottles of water and set them out each morning. Refill each night. I happen to know a place where you can get a really great water bottle.

3. Drink water with all your meals.

4. If you have a hard time drinking water, use a pretty glass or favorite cup. You can also drink out of a straw. Try it. Water goes down much faster when you suck it up. LOL

5. Keep a bottle of water in your car, by your chair, and by your bed.

6. When you think you are hungry, drink a glass of water first.

7. If you can't keep up with the number of ounces you are drinking, keep a pile of pennies for every 8 oz glasses. Move them from one pile to the next, each time you drink a glass of water. I used polished rocks from my candle rock garden on my entrance table. Each time I fill up my water bottle I move a rock. Robert thought the cat was playing some funny game with the rocks.

8. Take a pretty bottle that can hold 64 ounces. I used to have a big round green wine bottle that I filled with 12 oz glasses. Each time I poured the water into the bottle, I made a mark on the side to calibrate it. That way, any time during the day, I could count how many ounces I had drunk for the day.

9. Use a favorite glass or a pretty stemmed water glass. You feel special drinking water from a pretty glass.

10. Drink water at the top of every hour. Eventually you will not have to go potty as often. One other thing: Every time you go to the bathroom, then drink some more water.

11. If you have the flu or respiratory infection. The water will help to break up the phlegm and wash the impurities out of your system. You will cough up this stuff. It is my best medicine for a cold, flu, or stomach virus.

12. If you can't remember to drink your water. Send yourself 8 emails and leave them in your inbox to remind you! Delete as you drink your water!

Please keep in mind that too much of a good thing is bad. Do not drink more that 12 ounces in a 30 minute period of time. There is such a thing as water intoxication. Your kidneys can shut down.

Baby steps and incorporate water drinking into your routines. This will be good for you and it may just give you the energy to get your routines done.

One other benefit from drinking water, your skin will not be as dry or wrinkled. Water is the best moisturizer you can buy!

This is one simple way to love yourself. Take the time to drink your water. If you don't, who will take care of you!

Are you ready to FLY with your new habit?

FlyLady

P.S. As FlyBabies we tend to think that if a little will do this good then a lot will be better! DON'T GO OVERBOARD! You can drink too much water and deplete your electrolytes. This is called water intoxication. It will cause your kidneys to shut down. Don't drink more than 12 oz in a half hour. Pace yourself if you drink one little tea cup each hour for 8 hours; you have supplied your body with the water it needs.

Ask FlyLady

There is Not Enough Hours in a Day

This is going to be a little different Ask FlyLady question. I am going to pose what this question would have been; Kind of like how you play the TV game show Jeopardy.

How in the world can I do all you are asking me to do; there are not enough hours in a day! Help!!!

Here is the answer that one of our members sent us today! She had an epiphany today!

I consider myself a person who is easily overwhelmed and just as easily discouraged. I am learning to quit thinking of myself this way but none the less I was overwhelmed when I started looking at the FlyLady system.

Hot spots, zones, routines, control journals, assignments - it just all seemed too much. But once I started shining my sink I just couldn't stop.

So I sat here at my computer thinking - this all sounds so great but it is too much for my brain to handle. Then today I finally got it! Babysteps! See I was trying to take babysteps in each area instead of taking the whole system one step at a time.

When my children learned to walk they started by taking one or two steps and then falling on their bottoms. When I tried to take 5-6 babysteps all at one time - I pretty much fell on my bottom. Now, I'm going to take it slower (although my mind is screaming - you must get it all done NOW!). So for today, I've cleaned under my bed, shined my sink, and tied my shoes. And I think that tonight I'll try to write out a morning routine.

Babysteps - one at a time.

Thanks for my shiny sink!

June's Habit: Drink Your Water

#2 No Trouble at All

Dear FlyLady,

I've always wanted to drink more water, but somehow never got round to it, as there were always "more important" things to do.When I first joined FlyLady, it was one of the firs things I implemented, and with no trouble at all. It suddenly dawned on me that it is completely crazy that I need "permission" by e-mail from someone half-way across the world to get up and refill my glass!

So first I did it with the excuse "FlyLady said so", but now I do it BECAUSE I WANT TO, as it MAKES ME FEEL GOOD! But thanks for that initial "permission" nonetheless, I needed it...

I read here that recommended water intake depends on your weight, so I checked that out and converted it into litres for my convenience. I found that I should be drinking 2.4 litres of water a day.

The counting-with-rubber-bands-method doesn't speak to me. Instead, I took out the pint glass I still have from when I lived in England. That's just over half a litre. So, I need to drink five glasses - that makes two before lunch and three in the afternoon. Very easy not to loose count! Anything I drink during mealtimes or in the evening is a bonus.

Sometimes I get fed up with plain water. Then I will drink sparkling water for a few days. Or add a dash of pure lemon juice. Or, in summer, a sprig of fresh mint from the garden. But most of the time I like it plain.

And recently I have begun to not only appreciate the water and its positive effects on me. I thought one day "this is so easy and so beneficial, everyone should do it!".

And I remembered that everyone does not have access to clean, safe drinking water. And I felt humble and grateful. I knew in my head about that reality, but that day it filtered through to my heart.

Now I drink my water as an act of gratitude.

I have this opportunity - it would be rude and ungrateful to shun it. I definitely no longer feel guilty when I get up from my work to refill my glass!

Flying well hydrated in Central France,

Rosa

Reading the Bible Everyday

Saving Money Cooking "How to Cook" PlayList!"

I can help you get a jumpstart with my book,

The CHAOS Cure! ~FlyLady

This week we are in Zone 1: Your Front Porch, Entrance, and Dining Room!

This week our Zone is very important to our homes. The entrance to our homes make the first impression on our guests, our family and ourselves. When we walk into a clean and tidy home our whole attitude will be uplifted. This puts a smile of pride on our faces. We have gone so long, looking at such a terrible mess, that we have been ashamed to answer the door. I want you to get rid of guilt that accompanies clutter and CHAOS. To do this you have to get off your franny and start to declutter this area.

Your task is to declutter this area. Spend 15 minutes a day this week doing something, anything, in these rooms. They did not get dirty in a week and they will not get clean in a week, but you will be making headway. It is a trend! Get in the habit of decluttering in small segments of time. Decide what time of day you are going to tackle this little job, set a timer for 15 minutes, and just do it.

Monday is our day to Bless Our Homes!

On Mondays, The Weekly Home Blessing hour is the time FlyLady spends blessing her home. No detailed cleaning required; vacuum the middle of the floors only! Set your timers and have fun - you are blessing your home and family!

FlyLady sets her timer for 10 minutes to work on each of 7 ways to bless your home: If you don't have 10 minutes then use our 2 Minute WHB Challenge.

  • Vacuum
  • Dust
  • Quick Mop
  • Polish Mirrors and Doors
  • Purge magazines/catalogs
  • Change Sheets
  • Empty all trash cans

You can have FlyLady coach you through the Weekly Home Blessing hour by listening to her.

This takes approximately one hour; some tasks take less than 10 minutes.

"Don't obsess, set your timer for 10 minutes for each task, then QUIT!" ~ FlyLady

Zone 1: Mission #1 Monday

Dear Friends,

We are in Zone 1 this week; that is the Front Porch, the Entrance area, and the Dining Room.

Today I want you to spend 15 minutes getting rid of anything that does not belong on your porch or front entrance way. Things that have gotten thrown in a corner, along the wall, or even on the floor. The things that you almost don't even see because they have just become part of the space, get it out! If it does not belong there, then out it goes!

This does not mean that you have to spend three hours in your porch, do what you can do for 15 minutes.

FlyKid Mission #1 Monday

Hi Kids!

We are going to do what is called a Hot Spot Fire Drill!

This is when we look around our rooms at the flat surfaces of our furniture. The desk, the dresser and the nightstands. These are the places that we will just pile things on instead of throwing them away or putting them away. These are the Hot Spots.

To help us clean these places up we are going to do a Fire Drill. We are going to set a timer for 5 minutes and see how much and can throw away and put away off of those Hot Spots.

Ready.. set.... GO!

Your rooms will look and feel less messy when those flat surfaces are neat.

There is More Than One Way to Shine

Dear Friends,

When you join our group, your very first assignment, was to Go Shine Your Sink. Do you remember how good it felt to see it gleam. Then after is was shining, it was more difficult to put dirty dishes in it. As a result you kept the Dishwasher empty so you could dispose of your plates and glasses. The Clean and Shiny Sink was contagious. I have another God Breeze for you from a member's subject line!

Did you know that every room in your home has a Shiny Sink! Let's think about this for a little while.

Master Bedroom: For me it is seeing my bed made with my decorative pillows on it and my one crowning pillow that my SHE sisters gave me! It says, "I'm Not Bossy, I just have better ideas!"

Children's Rooms: Having the toys put away and the floor clear, is usually a good sign.

Bathrooms: Having the sink shining! That is an obvious, but the mirror clear of tooth paste splatters and dental floss home runs is another thing that makes my bathroom look nice. Also having toiletries put away and not sitting out on the counter.

Office: This is a tough one, Keep your desk clear, with an uncluttered work surface.

Dining Room: Having the dining table empty and a pretty center piece on it. Maybe even a table cloth and napkins.

Living Room: This is a hard one for me. Keeping my end tables and huge coffee table clear of papers.

What this all boils down to, is Hot Spot Prevention. We all have these areas in our home, that if we will be vigilant, they will not become cluttered with our daily stuff. So twice a day do a Hot Spot Fire Drill for two minutes. If we will stay on top of this, they will not become a raging clutter inferno.

There is one other Shiny Sink, that I'll bet, you have not thought of.

Yourself: What are the final touches that make you feel special when you are getting dressed. It could be, putting on your makeup, fixing your hair, donning a pair of earrings, placing that string of pearls around your neck. It could also be a spritz of your favorite fragrance, the perfect color of lipstick, or using a sweet smelling bar of soap in your bath. One other more intriguing possibility could be the foundation garments that you put on that give you that special feeling all day long. Something lacy and pretty underneath jeans and a t-shirt can make a huge difference in your own attitude. Something special just for you!

What can you do each morning to make yourself feel special? Each and every one of your are special to me! My goal is that you will feel this worth for yourself. If you outsides look good, your insides feel good. If your insides feel good, you can do anything! The Sky is the limit! I want you to Shine too!

Are you ready FLY along with me!

Try a 2 Minute Weekly Home Blessing

Dear Friends,

Have you ever done a Weekly Home Blessing? I understand for some of you who work outside of your home or have little children, that putting together a full hour to bless your home is almost impossible, but I have a way for you to do it without stressing you out. I like to do it this way too.The last thing I want to do is add more stress to your life. We are here to reduce your stress!

First I want to look at why you don't think you have time to do a Weekly Home Blessing Hour.

When your mother made you vacuum; you had to do it right! All the furniture had to be pulled out from the wall and vacuumed under it.

Dusting was another form of torture. Everything had to be removed from the tables. Oh let's not forget about mopping a floor. First we had to sweep it well and then we had to get down on our hands and knees to scrub the floor. If we tried to do it any other way it was not good enough.

No wonder we don't want to bless our homes. As a child it was punishment.

Now hear this! This is your home not your mother's and you can bless it anyway you want to. Do your morning routine first, be dressed to lace up shoes and make sure you have your breakfast. Then you spend 10 minutes just one thing at a time. If you can't put together a full hour then do one thing each day or at the top of every hour.

Change sheets - I usually strip those off the bed as I get up. I have two sets of sheets for our bed. I allow the bed to air out till I get the rest of my morning routine done.

Empty all the trash - Grab the trash bag from the kitchen and run around the house and add the rest of the trash to it. Put it in your big garbage can.

Vacuum all rooms - This is just the middles. Do it as fast as you can. Do not obsess about the lines in the carpet.

Cull/toss old magazines - This take no time at all. Gather up all your old magazines and put them in the recycle bin or put them in the car to drop off at a Doctor's office or Car Repair place. They never have any good magazines.

Mop kitchen and bath - This is one of our most fun jobs. Yes you heard me right. Mopping can be fun if you will let go of your mother's perfectionism. Mopping is just putting soapy water down and getting it up off the floor. Along with it comes the dirt. There are lots of ways to do this. We have a great mop that helps with this.

Your children can have fun too by putting them in their bathing suits and letting them slip and slid on their little bottoms. Use old towels and shaving cream. They will enjoy themselves and you will get a clean floor. It may take more than 10 minutes though. LOL

Clean mirrors and doors - We have a tool for this job too. Our purple rags do the job in no time at all. Take a wet purple rag and clean off those dog paw print and children finger prints from the doors, and toothpaste splatters from the mirrors.

Dust - This is not your mother's way of dusting. We have two great tools for this: Our feather duster and a MultiWand.

I use my feather duster to bless my home real fast. It only takes me about two minutes to feather dust my whole house. I use my MultiWand when I am doing missions in the zone we are in.

So you see Weekly Home Blessing can be an aerobic exercise or a once a day blessing. I keep my Weekly Home Blessing list on my bathroom door. I have a day of the week beside each one.

Weekly Home Blessing can be hard if you still have lots of clutter. You can't organize clutter; you have to get it out of your house. Clutter is standing in your way of you blessing your home.

FlyLady

Tip of the Day: You can spread Weekly Home Blessing Hour over a whole week. One item each day. Here is a poster to help you.

June's Habit: Drink Your Water

#9 Drinking Water Might Help with Sleep

Dear FlyLady,

June's habit is Drinking Water, and that's great news. I can confirm the experience of the woman who wrote earlier that she drinks more with a straw... I had no idea that it made such a difference! I've started gifting my friends reusable glass straws made by SimplyStraws (my favorite is the pale pink).

Initially I got the reusable straws to avoid staining my teeth with hot tea and wine, but I these days use them more often for water, since I actually drink it now! One thing that I learned during my training as a scientist is that the body processes general fluids in a different way than it processes pure H20. We can drink tea or flavored beverages all day long, but we still need pure water.

Earlier, "Flying in NC" wrote that she finds the water at her workplace tastes unpleasant; she's probably onto something. Our taste-buds are sophisticated instruments! There may be a pollutant, leach from the pipes, or treatment residue that just isn't healthy. Further, there could be a high mineral concentration that is making the water very acidic or alkaline. In matters of water, I trust my intuition.

There are lots of pollutants that we can't see or taste, so if its bad enough that it actually tastes unpleasant, I don't drink it. At my workplace, I have a 3-gallon bottle either made of BPA-free plastic or better: a glass jug (easily purchased from a beer-brewing store). I fill each jug with reverse osmosis filtered water (and add a very low level of trace minerals to balance what's been taken out).

When it's time to switch jugs, I bring the new one in atop a rolling suitcase after hours or on the weekend, then keep it stashed between my desk and the file cabinet. I pour my water from that into a covered pitcher on my desktop, and refill my pink-glass straw sippy cup throughout the day. With this system I've been doing for a year, I drink close to 3 gallons a week which is an incredible improvement!

As a scientist, I've experimented with just about everything to improve my sleep problems; better hydration has made a huge impact on that specific issue and my overall well-being.

Thanks FlyLady for encouraging us in Drinking Water!

Blessings aplenty,

This week we are in Zone 2: Your Kitchen; the Heart of your Home.

Focus on one little part — reclaim your kitchen sink. Empty everything out of your sink, shine it up, fill it with hot soapy water, and start washing dishes, one at a time.

  • Do a 27-Fling "Trash" Boogie. Trash is clutter. When the bag is full, take it outside, right away, to the trash bin.
  • Clear out your mail hotspot. Get rid of the old magazines, catalogs, and advertisements.
  • Clear the clutter off your counters one at a time.
  • Clear the clutter off your kitchen table.
  • Take a peek at your pantry. Don't pull everything out and start reorganizing; just take a look, see what you need, and start a grocery list.

If your kitchen is clean but still cluttered: start decluttering. Check out our daily missions. FlyLady usually sends out one during the week which concentrates on decluttering one small area of your kitchen.

Zone 2: Mission #1 Monday

Dear Friends,

We are in the kitchen this week!

Take 15 minutes and scrub your stove top! Soak the knobs and drip pans in hot soapy water while you clean the stove top. Some elbow grease and hot soapy water will take care of a lot! Don't become a perfectionist and try to get it as clean as the day it was new. Just do the best you can and then scrub the drip pans and knobs. Don't scrub the knobs so hard that the numbers and words scrub off!

Anything that you do will be better than what it was!

FlyKid Mission #1 Monday

Hi Kids,

We are taking a walk! Let's walk through our houses looking for 10 things that belong in our rooms and put them away. If you have left any shoes, jackets, school things, toys or books around the house, now is the time to return them to their home.

When you leave your things around the house, it makes the house look messy. Let's grab up the things that belong in our rooms and take them there.

The Dis-Ease of Alienation

Dear Friends,

Today's musing began when my midnight editor woke me up at 4:30 am. I should have known better than to just stay in bed and mull it over instead of slipping out and writing it down. So for 3 hours my eyes were wide open and I watched the world around me wake up too.

In the past I have asked for your perfectionism traits in a fun way; You might be a Perfectionist if ... As I read them, tears started to roll down my face. I saw our perfectionism hurting feelings, taking away small moments of celebration and the alienation of ourselves from those who love us the most. Look at what we do to our family and friends all in the name of perfectionism.

I have been a victim of this just like you have, yet we continue to dish it out on a daily basis. Didn't it hurt enough when a relative would say, "You have such a pretty face, but .... Or if you got Bs on your report card all you heard was, "Why can't you do better?" Lord help us if we got a C.

Were you the little girl that picked a handful of yellow dandelions only to be told they were weeds? What about what we have done to our husbands by refolding towels and repacking the dishwasher when they have helped us. No wonder we can't get anyone to help us around the house. No one can do it to suit us.

I have decided that the word perfectionist is an oxymoron even if it isn't two words. Robert explained that the term meant for example; Jumbo Shrimp. Because if you are a perfectionist you really do have a character flaw! Flaws are imperfections. If you can't stand it in anyone else how do you tolerate it in yourself.

No one is perfect and when we quit striving for this in others and in ourselves we will begin to live for the first time ever! Perfectionism is a dis-ease.

Are you ready to FLY by letting go of your perfectionism?

FlyLady

Each day we have a focus. Just spend 2 minutes on this and your week will be productive. On Friday! It is the day we clean out car, diaper bag, purse, and plan a date with your Sweet Darling. Set your timer and try it two minutes at a time. What can you get done today while I talk with you on our Live Video Podcast.

If you can't figure out what to do next; use my list! You will be just as amazed as I am. Set your timer and get started. Be sure and rest too! My list has been spread out over a whole week. It works out to less than 15 minutes a day. My hotspots are cleared and our home is shining! You can have this too.

June's Habit: Drink Your Water

#16 Pass on New Ideas

Dear FlyLady,

A water testimonial. I was terrible about drinking water for honestly most of my life (in my 50's now) until I really started listening to you about the importance of doing so. I love that you pass on ideas and I tried different ones but they just didn't stick. But from those, came something that works for me.

I have a set of 4 16 oz cups from the university I went to. I really like them but didn't use them much. Then, I had an idea-they are stacked on my counter each evening and first thing in the morning, I fill the top one and when I'm finished drinking it, I turn it over, place it on the sink edge and fill the next one up. It's so visual and I guess I really need that. I still have "water" on my daily check list with 4 lines and it feels like a real accomplishment to check those off too.

Yesterday, I had an infusion of medicine for osteoperosis and the nurse stressed the imortance of drinking A LOT of water over the next 2 days to flush the medicine out to prevent liver damage. So thankful that drinking water is a part of every day now thanks to you.

Christine

This week we are in Zone 3: Your Main Bathroom and Another Room.

This week we are focusing on the main bathroom and one extra room. The extra room may be a second, or third bathroom, a guest bedroom, a child's bedroom, the office, or maybe the laundry room. Just pick one extra room and focus on it this week.

The bathroom: Do you live in fear that someone will actually see your bathroom? It is too easy to close our eyes to the mess that is hiding right behind the bathroom door. This week, we are going to open that door to the bathroom, and BabyStep, by BabyStep, we are going to conquer the CHAOS that is the main bathroom!

Your bathroom should give you sense of relaxation and joy when you enter. This is a place for you to pamper and take care of yourself. Treat the room with love and respect and it will bless you with comfort and peace.

Remove the obvious clutter, take out the dirty laundry, and empty the garbage can.

If your bathroom is clean but still cluttered: Start decluttering (makeup, old towels, old medicine, hair supplies, shampoos, etc.). Check out our daily missions. FlyLady usually sends out one during the week which concentrates on decluttering one small area of your bathroom.

Sprinkle Your Words with Love

Dear Friends,

All of our lives we have spent putting out fires. These fires were started by our perfectionism and our procrastination. Along with panic of these fires come the squeals of martyrdom and yells of dissatisfaction. We have all done this and it is our family who have had listen to it.

Why do we torture our family with hurtful words? I can tell you why! You are so stressed out and feeling like a martyr! This has got to stop! I can help you get rid of the stress, but it us up to you to curb those angry words. The first steps is to follow our directions for your routines, getting dressed to shoes, hair and face.

It is up to you to change your attitude toward your family! Once you change your martyred outlook to one of blessing your family and giving teaching moments, you will see a change in them. I know that you don't believe me, but you can only change yourself. It is by your example that your family will begin to help and support your efforts to secure a peaceful home.

What does your wicked tongue do to your children, your husband and most of all you. It doesn't tell them you love them. It makes them feel less than; it hurts their self-worth. They feel that they have no say in things. It makes your husband feel that he is married to his mother! I don't even want to go there. They feel like servants, instead of family members. Those harsh words are worse than a whipping. You cut your family out of the conversational loop. The family cant even say what is on their mind because they are afraid of you. Home life is based on the fear of not making mother mad. Your family members hide from you. They become afraid to tell you when something happens.

After those words have come from your lips, just how do you feel then? Do you feel laden with guilt or do you even realize you are barking nasty remarks their way. Oblivious to the torture you have inflicted upon your loved ones.

There is absolutely no excuse for this. I don't want to hear that this is the only way I can get my family to do anything. This is the lie that you tell yourself to not feel guilty. It is time to forgive yourself and then ask them to forgive you.

Many times in our lives we are faced with things that are difficult. As sidetracked people we allow our perfectionism to hurt us and our children. We just do not know that is what is causing us to be raving banshees.

Now you have a chance to change by taking actions. You may not have known how to change in the past but you are learning. Take these words into your heart and forgive yourself. You know the things you have said. This can be the beginning of a new relationship with your family.

I would like to suggest that you start writing your feelings down too. Not just the pain you are feeling but how you can change. First you have to forgive yourself. You are just learning these things; the more you write the more you will discover about yourself. You are not expected to be perfect. Love yourself enough to take these words and go forward from here. This is not the end but the beginning of a new life. After you forgive yourself and get in touch with your own feelings; then you can ask for forgiveness. My heart goes out to you! My prayers are with you and your whole family.

You can do this; you found us because you were looking for a change in your life. You are willing to make changes.

Your tongue can criticize or it can encourage. The choice is all yours. If you have not changed your attitude, then how can you expect to see a change in them. It has to come from the heart. If not they will see right through you. They may not even believe it at first, because you will not be sounding like the mother that have been used to all your life. The children may think the aliens have taken their real mother away. Prove to them and their father that you have changed. Sprinkle your words of love, encouragement and teaching, all over your home. Apologize for your tongue. Don't play the martyr game anymore. No one loves a martyr. Not even you!

It time to FLY without the Guilt; forgive yourself!

Summer Camp the FlyLady Way

Memorial Day kicks off our summer of fun! A little planning and scheming now will help your summer to be productive, informative, and filled with memories.

One of the most frequent questions we get every summer is "how do I keep my children from getting bored while school is out!" The answer I always give is you are the director of your very own summer camp!

With just a little planning, you and your children can have a lot of fun and maybe learn a little at the same time. Summer camp was one of my fondest memories from my childhood. I don't know how my mother could afford to send me to camp the summer I was twelve years old, but she did! I had the pleasure of going to 4H Camp, Girl Scout Camp and Church Camp. I would not take anything for my time at summer camp. If you are feeling the pinch of higher insurance premiums in this economy then you may want to sign up for our FlyLady Summer Camp.

Summer Camp is not just for the children. You can have a Spa Camp, Redecorating Camp, Declutter Camp, or Paper Clutter Fire Pit camp. This summer can help you reclaim areas of your home if you will focus on a new area each week. Imagine that, by Labor Day you can have a new home.

We like to call it Camp GonnaWannaFLY. You can name your camp anything you and your campers would like to. On our website, www.FlyLady.net; we have a Camp GonnaWannaFly Control Journal. This Camp Guide will help you and your creative campers come up with ideas for summer fun.

Some ideas we have for this summer's Camp GonnaWannaFLY have to do with the Olympics. Think about doing swimming games or track and field. In the past we have had camps centering around learning about another country. One set of campers slept during the day and stayed up at night learning about astronomy and constellations. How fun would that be to sleep out under the stars and use a big flashlight to trace them out. Maybe your campers want to learn how to build fires and cook in a dutch oven. Everything tastes better when it is cooked on an open fire. Please check with local authorities and get the proper permits before you build a fire.

Another fun activity is to allow your kids to have a Yard Sale! I did not say you do it! This is their project and they get to keep the money. Decide beforehand what they would like to do with the money. They can get rid of their clutter and maybe help you get rid of some of yours. After the sale is over be sure and donate the leftover stuff to your local Habitat for Humanity. Do not take it back into your house. The goal is to get rid of clutter and have fun!

Summer does not have to be filled with bored kids or couch potatoes. It is up to you to be your camp director.

June's Habit: Drink Your Water

#23 Maintaining Balance

Dear FlyLady,

I must admit that my "fluid" of choice is not water, but as we all know water is the best for us. It keeps us hydrated and our body working as it should maintaining balance of our electrolytes and kidney function.

I have to force myself to drink water - I am pretty good at home, but not at work. At work I have found that if I set my timer, (yes I have one at work too) for 45 minutes, that gives me the auditory clue that I need to remind me to drink my water.

Of course by drinking more water, it requires more trips to the LGR (little girls room or loo) which then I drink more water right before I leave my desk for the trip to the bathroom. By doing this, I am able to drink at least 25 ounces of water before I leave the house in the morning, another 25-50 ounces at work, then more when I get home.

Since I don't drink "cold" water, I prefer mine room temperature, my beautiful water bottle, sitting on my desk at work or on the counter at home reminds me to drink the fluid that will help me maintain my health.

Thanks for all you do! Hugs

~Stacey Ann

I can help you get a jumpstart with my book,

The CHAOS Cure! ~FlyLady

This week we are in Zone 4: Your Master Bedroom, Bathroom, and Close.

This week we are working on Zone 4: The Master Bedroom. It also includes any bathroom you may have off the master bedroom, and whatever lurks in the bedroom closet. This will be an ongoing process. You may or may not get the entire room cleaned this week. That is not the objective. Any thing you do in this room now will be an improvement over the way it was last week. Next month you will focus on it again.

Your bedroom should be the cleanest room in your home. Many of you still use yours as a garbage/clutter disposal for the rest of the house. If your bedroom is clean and clutter free, then it becomes an inviting haven for building your relationship with your spouse. The best gift you can give your children is a strong marriage. This is true whether your children are 2 or 40 years old.

Your task is to declutter this area. Spend 15 minutes a day this week doing something, anything, in the master bedroom. It did not get dirty in a week and it will not get clean in a week, but you will be making head-way.

Zone 4 Mission #1 Monday

Dear Friends:

Are you ready for your mission? We are doing a lot of decluttering this week. I don't want you to get overwhelmed so make sure to use your timer.

I want you to start to get rid of anything that is under your bed. Seriously, you will love the way your room feels when there is nothing under your bed. I know there are going to be those that say, I have no other place to store things. Well, go through those things and find a home for the things that you really love or get rid of the rest.

Take 15 minutes and work on this. Don't let it consume and overwhelm you. Just 15 minutes now and then every time you can spend an extra 15 minutes until you get rid of the clutter.

FlyKid Mission #1 Monday

Hi Kids,

We are going to do what is called a Hot Spot Fire Drill! This is when we look around our rooms at the flat surfaces of our furniture. The desk, the dresser and the nightstands. These are the places that we will just pile things on instead of throwing them away or putting them away. These are the Hot Spots. To help us clean these places up we are going to do a Fire Drill. We are going to set a timer for 5 minutes and see how much and can throw away and put away off of those Hot Spots.

Habits Can Save You Money

Dear Friends,

Everyone is feeling the pinch of the economy. Did you know that when you are FLYing you are saving money? I want to discuss some of these money saving habits we can help you establish.

Decluttering 15 minutes a day! How can this save you money; I know you are thinking this? The act of decluttering makes you more particular about what you buy and bring into your home. This amazing thing happens because you begin to love yourself and the way your home looks. You have to really need something to buy it! Shopping becomes something you do because you don't need a diversion from being at home feeling guilty about your clutter and all the stuff you buy because it is on sale. If you did not spend $20 a week on more clutter then you would have saved $1040 a year.

Picking out your clothes as part of your before bed routine! This simple action will give you more time in the morning so you can fix your breakfast and a cup of coffee before you head off to work. No more stopping for expensive drive thru breakfasts and designer coffees. You have to pleasure of a peaceful morning with your life under control along with your finances. If you spend $5 a day on a drive thru breakfast and a coffee then you could have saved $1300 in a year.

Planning your menus for next week and preparing a grocery list before you go shopping can help too. This keeps you from going to the grocery store multiple times each week. This alone can save you $50 a week.

There is hardly anyway to keep from spending less than that each time you go to the store. If you are cooking then you are saving more money by not getting takeout from restaurants. That could alone could save you another $25 a week. This amounts to $3900 for a year.

Wearing good shoes for your feet help in lots of ways! Good shoes gives you more energy and keeps you from breaking toes and cutting your precious feet. More energy helps you to exercise more and take better care of yourself; this saves on doctor bills. One co-pay for an office visit could save you $20 a month. A broken foot could set you back $1500 for an emergency room visit. Shoes save you more than you would ever think about. $1740 is amazing when a good pair of shoes could runs around $50. What an investment! This doesn't even count the money you save because of the energy you have to keep your home in order.

Next let's look at how much you save by paying your bills on time and not running up your credit cards. One late charge a month or an over draft fee is could run into $100 dollars a month. If there is one there are usually many. You are having to rob Peter to pay Paul. Stay on top of your bills and paying things on time is a major way to save money while FLYing! $1200 is a small amount to save when we examine what we really spend in those fees and interest rates. I haven't even figured the cost of the fuel for all those extra trips to the grocery store, to pay a bill before the power gets turned off, doctor visits and fast food trips.

So you see with these five simple habits you can save lots of money! FLYing makes good financial sense!!. We have been stealing from ourselves for a very long time with our SHEness.

Are you ready to FLY and save money too?

Help We Are Moving

Dear Friends,

Moving is never fun, but it can be made easier if you will not get overwhelmed by the whole process. The very first thing you need to do is read my moving tips. Many people move during the summer. We have some tips to help you.

Moving and Packing Tips

Every week we have several members that holler HELP! "We are moving and I don't know where to start. We have to put this house up for sale and it is awful. Please tell me what to do."

"We are moving cross country and I don't know where to start to pack."

"When we move, I don't know how I can unpack and keep the chaos of the move from overwhelming me."

These are some hard questions, but I have a simple answer.

BABY STEPS! YES YOU HEARD ME RIGHT, WE HAVE TO BREAK THE JOB DOWN INTO SMALLER PARTS.

DON'T MOVE ANYTHING YOU DON'T LOVE!

You know how we do Crisis Cleaning: 15 minutes at a time in three different rooms, then take a 15 minute break. This is the most important part. Rest so you won't burn out.

I want you to think about the hardest room in your home to pack up and also the easiest. For most people the hardest room will be the kitchen or the storage room/basement. Then the easiest will be the bathroom. Split your time up between these two rooms so that the worst room does not get you down and when you change to the room that is easy, you will have a sense of accomplishment.

1. Get your favorite drink as well as a bottle of water. So you will not get dehydrated.

2. Set your timer for 15 minutes and get started doing 15 minutes in your toughest room.

3. The first thing to do is get rid of all the trash; Bag it up and get it out of the house.

4. Then get rid of everything that can be given away to friends or charities. This the hardest part.

5. Next you have to get all of those bags out of this room right this minute.

6. Do not let the trash or give aways pile up.

7. Pick a place to stage them until the truck arrives to accept your give away items.

NOW FOR THE PACKED BOXES

1. Now pick a staging area for your boxes that will be going to your new home;

2. Get the boxes out of the rooms where they were packed.

3. Don't mark every box with the word STUFF and More STUFF.

4. Color code your rooms and mark your boxes as you pack them. Number them too.

5. Last boxes packed will be the items you need first. Label them START UP. Load on truck last.

6. Unload Kitchen stuff first. The kitchen is the heart of the home.

Now be sure and read my moving tips. This is all detailed and our members have given us some great tips for getting settled. There is also a section in my book Sink Reflections if you have it.

Keep in mind that once you have the necessities unpacked and placed in the proper rooms, the rest can be unpacked 5 boxes at a time. You did not get it packed up in a day and you are not going to be settled in to your new home over night. BabySteps will get you there. Besides if you were not ruthless with your decluttering while you were packing, then you can take the time to find the right place for your stuff in your new home. If for some strange reason, it does not have a home, then you may need to rethink your decision to hold on to this item. The box you packed it in can also be the box that gets taken to your new charity thrift shop. Get to know these people well!

Now as you are packing up the old house, you need to keep one area clear, just for sanity of your family. You still need to eat and rest. So you will need a clear dining table and comfortable chairs in the family room to relax in. Make it a priority and you will have a place to sit when your timer goes off.

Please do not crash and burn! Now is not the time to get sick, so pace yourself! This is a direct Dear Friends,

Release this clutter and you will find that your home will become new and joyous place to live. Peace is just a declutter away! Try it.

If your home is declutter and you are not planning on moving, then you can join us in spirit by asking yourself the important questions: Do you love it, Do you have a place for it and Does it make you smile? There is always some decluttering to do.

June's Habit: Drink Your Water

#30 Lack of Focus

Dear FlyLady,

Thanks for focusing on water this month.

I appreciate that you are not focusing on a particular amount of water - however focusing on "an amount" is exactly what got me off high center about drinking my water....here's how... Like most of us, I KNOW I should be drinking "more" water.

Since I am a busy Realtor, I get easily sidetracked. I have a history of drinking "more" water for a day or two, then completely forgetting to drink water- or anything at all (I know - cringe) until late in the afternoon on some days.

Once I read your emails I decided to apply some of your other principles to help this lack of focus. I also believe each flybaby should decide for themselves how much to drink, but I have found it advantageous to set a certain amount for "me". I read a helpful article about drinking water - another God Breeze - that suggested the healthy amount of water was one-half your weight..in ounces, per day.

Again, I appreciate you are not trying to apply numbers to the amount of water we drink, but I realized I was PROCRASTINATING about figuring out how much water I should drink, and therefore NOT DRINKING any! Talk about the ultimate self-abusing perfectionism! Yikes! Once I realized what was happening, I quickly employed the wonderful tips I've learned from you.

#1 It does not take an hour to figure out how much I weigh, and I don't have to run directly to a scale to see exactly how much I weigh this very moment, I know approximately what my weight is, and that's close enough!

#2 It takes approximately 3 seconds to figure out what one-half of that number is.

#3 It takes approximately 30 seconds to walk to the cabinet, pull out my glass measuring cup with the ounces on it, fill one of my typical glasses with water, and dump it in the measuring cup to see how many ounces it holds. Then It took about 10 more seconds to add that up and figure how many of my glasses of water I needed per day!!! The entire event took less than 4 minutes, and I had put it off for years!!!

FlyLady, some of us just need numbers to go by, and coming to the realization that I need to drink 5 of my glasses of water per day has brought me instant success! (I keep saying "my" glasses because I applied your soap-is-soap principle and let go of the urge to wait until I purchased a correctly measured water bottle, a glass-is-a-glass)

Perhaps someone else will find it helpful to have a goal of glasses each day to shoot for! I actually enjoy the feeling of knowing I have drunk all 5 by the end of the day - and If I don't quite drink that many, at least it's more than I was ever drinking before, and I have a REALISTIC view of how much I still need as the day progresses.

So thank You so much for focusing on water, it's the best vitamin out there! I feel better and have already started to crave it more.

From the bottom of my water glass, thanks! I simply love you and all you do for us!

Flybaby L, Oklahoma

Zone 5 Mission #1 Monday

Dear Friends,

Today I want you to spend 15 minutes getting rid of anything that does not belong in your living room. Things that have gotten thrown in a corner, on a chair, or even the floor. The things that you almost don't even see because they have just become part of the room, get it out! If it does not belong there then out it goes!

This does not mean that you have to spend three hours in your living room, do what you can do for 15 minutes.

FlyKid Mission #1 Monday

Hi Kids,

I want you to open up the doors of your closet and check to see if you have any clothes that have fallen off of the hangers and have become jumbled up on the floor of the closet.

Set a timer or ask Mom or Dad to set a timer for 5 minutes and see how much you can hang back up. If you can't reach the rod to hang these things back up, ask Mom or Dad to give you some hangers, you then hang the clothes on the hangers, then ask for help to hang them up. If you need to set the timer again, then do so for another 5 minutes. If you find some things that no longer fit or you do not use, put those in a bag and give them to a parent to bless someone else with.

Remember less stuff to clean and put away means more time to play.

Have fun!

Thank You for Your Love and Support

A New 8 minute Video from Me

Hello to all my Flybabies and followers;

Thanks you so much for all the support y’all have given me through the years! We are incredibly thankful for all that have purchased any of our great FlyLady Home Tools during our Warehouse Clearance Sale and time of transition.

Cut Your Losses

Dear Friends,

We all make mistakes! This is a fact of living. So why do we beat ourselves up when we have made a bad choice. I think it is because deep down inside we are doing what has been done to us all of our lives; punishing ourselves. This has got to stop.

Instead of admitting that we have made a bad choice we keep trying to make that decision work. Maybe we should take a lesson from business and cut our losses and move on. Instead we keep trying to fix things to make them better. Clutter is clutter no matter what form it takes.

You can't organize clutter; you can only get rid of it! I want your home to be filled with things that make you smile. Our lives are too short to continually deal with that pink elephant in the living room. One time a dear friend was moving from a home where she had lived twenty-seven years. It was hard for her to let go of things. Eventually she came up with a plan. If she had any doubt about whether something should be packed; she would set it in the main path to the truck. On the first day she would gingerly walk around the item. The next day she pushed it aside and if on the third day she kicked it; it when to the curb. This showed her that she really didn't love it as much as she had originally thought she had.

We can decorate that pink elephant but it is still a pink elephant. It is sucking the life right out of you. You spend your whole day doing your best to make it fit. God knows we don't want to admit that we made the mistake of bringing that pink elephant home in the first place; that we wasted money and worst of all our time. We just keep plodding along; hoping that the pink elephant will not get mad and become the bull in the china shop. The sad part is that it already has. Just being in your living room it is destroying the most important thing in your home and that is you!

Many years ago I had a diseased gallbladder. I was sick all the time. This gallbladder was toxic to me. Once it was removed I was able to get on with my life. Relationships can be like this too. We have all had people in our lives who suck the life right out of us. You may be with someone right now who is toxic to you. You may have a friend that uses you to make themselves feel superior. You may be struggling with an abuse situation that you hope and pray will get better. They don't get better. They get worse. This abuse can mean a lot of things: physical, emotional, sexual, drug, alcohol and financial.

It is time to cut your losses and strap on your wings to FLY; Finally Loving Yourself. For when you are FLYing, you realize when something is clutter in your life. As nurturers we really do want to help everyone but in the end, we can only help ourselves. This is not a selfish attitude. It is all about self-preservation. This type of clutter is going to destroy your spirit.

Accept that you made a mistake! Forgive yourself and cut your losses by decluttering. In business if you lose a nickel on everything you sell and you sell a million of them; you are losing a million nickels. Stop the blood-letting!

It is time to FLY by Decluttering!

We have a great mop head that helps with this.

July's Habit: Swish and Swipe

#7 Increase in Bathrooms

Dear FlyLady,

Just moved into a new house with 2 and 1/2 baths instead of one.

Wanted to get the new habit going but was intimidated by the increase in bathrooms. ( I am going to really have to use the hint of going to a different bathroom each time I need to use it myself).

Plus having just moved, none of my bathrooms were Swish and Swipe ready.

Spent my day yesterday scrubbing out cabinets and under the sinks, lining the shelves and stocking each bathroom with the appropriate supplies.

Today I can start Swishing and Swiping!!

Now I need to order two more FlyLady toilet brushes!!! Thanks FlyLady for sharing all your wisdom.

I can slowly get my new house to shine!

The CHAOS Cure! ~FlyLady

This week we are in Zone 2: Our Kitchens.

The kitchen is the heart of our home.

Zone 2: Mission #1 Monday

That Discombobulated Feeling

Dear Friends,

What is it about change that discombobulates us? Once upon a time our favorite bowling center changed their furniture. The bowling center was purchased by a new owner. He had started to fix up the place and change the rules on us. The previous owner had done the same thing but what was different about these changes this time.

I believe that it was the speed at which they were done. One week we go in to bowl and everything is familiar; the next week the furniture has been moved. That is it. They rearranged the furniture and didn't tell us or let us help. It was just done. If someone came into our home and did this we would not be able to stand it. I understand their right to fix things up and change rules but at whose expense. In the end it will be be theirs because we don't like change.

This is why the gradual approach is much easier for us to take. We don't feel out of place in our own homes. We teach you to declutter for 15 minutes, clear out a hot spot and do a 27 Fling Boogie to release your clutter in babysteps. We don't tell you to back a truck up to the front door and start pitching. That is very difficult. Even the thought of it tears us up on the inside. When we take the gradual approach, it gives our eyes, brains, and bodies time to adjust to little changes. The clutter got there a little at a time. and you can and will get rid of it one bag or box at a time.

We have all cleaned up an area. We can spend hours doing it, but it won't stay that way very long. We will start to pile it up all over again. All because we did it too fast; we worked too hard and we crashed and burned in the process.

Do a little every day and see the changes start to happen in babysteps. One day you will wake up and your house will be clean and you didn't even know you were doing it. Please don't allow your perfectionism to rip off the clutter that you have been protecting yourself with. Learn about why you collected it and gradually let it go. If you strip it all away, you will just put it back with a vengeance. It is like going on a crash diet. We all have lost the weight but when we stop the diet it all comes back because we didn't address the real problem of why we ate it (collected it) in the first place.

Be good to yourself. We don't want you to feel uncomfortable. The peace will come with consistent babysteps. You can do this.

I think you need a hug! {{{{HUGS}}}

We have a couple of books to help you find the Hidden Treasure that you have lost. the first book is my book Sink Reflections, 2nd book Body Clutter, 3rd book, CHAOS to Clean, and my newest book The CHAOS Cure. They are self-help books! You know how much we love self-help books. Guess what! We can read them all day and night but unless we start to do some of the things in the book; we will not see changes in our life.

We all love a great story. The next book is a novel that my sister wrote called Hidden Treasures. My sister has been my muse and sounding board since FlyLady started. She has read the testimonials, she has held FlyBabies' hands as they have poured their hearts out to us, and she has listened to the God Breezes. Her book gives us a new way to teach our FlyBabies.

Swishing, Swiping, and Scrubbing

Dear FlyLady,

My shower stall is a mess! It's covered in mildew and icky orange stuff. How is the best way to clean it up?

Thanks a million.

Debbie

Dear Debbie,

If you want to stop mildew and mold from growing in your shower, you need to get the air circulating. I was taught by a nurse that mold will not grow in moving air. To get the air moving, get a small fan and set it outside your bathroom to blow air into the room. Also, open the shower door or pull back the shower curtain. This will help the shower to dry.

After the walls dry, you will need to close the shower curtain for it to dry.

I like to bless my sweet DH by cleaning his shower for him once a month. Since we got the Rubba Swishas in the FlyShop, I like to use one on corners around the floor. I don't use the same one that I use on his toilet. That would just gross me out! Robert is really good about keeping his shower door open to allow it to dry.

You can clean your shower just a little each time you are in it. While the conditioner is on your hair, you can scrub a little area in your shower. After about a week of doing just a little every day, your shower will be clean and shiny.

Kathy uses our FlyLady Mop on her showers and bathtubs. Our FlyLady Mop has an adjustable handle. She sets the handle in its shortest position and uses it wet to scrub the walls or dry to soak up the moisture.

I also keep a Rubba Scrubba in my tub. I rarely take a shower since I love my bath time. My Rubba Scrubba helps me keep my tub jets clean. It hangs on a hook to the right of my tub. You can also use your purple rag to get rid of the soap film that is left behind. It works well. My sister-in-law could not believe what a great job it did on her shower doors.

To help eliminate mold and mildew I like to use a very mild solution of bleach water in a spray bottle. The recipe is 1 part bleach to 10 parts water. This will help to keep the mold and mildew from growing.

With my Rubba Tools, Purple Rags, and our FlyLady Mop, we keep our showers clean! My bathroom is always company ready and I love how my clean bathroom blesses me.

July's Habit: Swish and Swipe

#14 Follow by Example

Dear FlyLady,

I have only been receiving your e-mails for about 3 months.

I have worked very hard to follow your example daily routines and weekly habits. It has changed the way the entire house looks and feels in even that short amount of time.

One of my favorite routines is Swish and Swipe.

Before joining the FlyLady group, anytime a guest needed the bathroom, I would say, "Go ahead, but I'm so sorry about the mess." And I would feel embarrassed, thinking I needed to work harder on keeping my bathroom clean.

The swish and swipe, combined with one load of laundry a day, keeps my bathroom nice and clean and I never have to apologize to anyone anymore about the mess.

Thank you for all of your advice. It is so simple, but makes a big difference!

Impatience and Your Mouth

Dear Friends,

Over the years we have used email to change the way you think by sending 15 emails a day. In the last year we have changed the way we send emails. We had hoped that you would be happy about these changes. It takes several people to help me to help you. We do not charge for our email messages. This is why we put a simple promotion in our messages. They are similar to commercials on TV as you watch your favorite show. This helps us to pay the bills. I would like to thank all of you who have embraced our changes.

I have told you about my Granny in the past. I do not believe I ever heard her raise her voice in my whole life. My mother was one of us, who never really found out how to get her life in any order.

My memories of her are of yelling and screaming for us to clean our rooms and do our chores. My chores were the kitchen,(cooking too), bathrooms, and sewing clothes for us. My granny taught me to sew when I was eight years old. As a result of all my sidetracked nature, my room never got clean. It was piled up to the ceiling and I had to hear endless screaming, yelling, and beatings because of the clutter in my room and the clutter in my mother's closet.

It was also my job to get her out of bed each morning and help to find her clothes and shoes. She was a teacher. She had so many shoes in her closet that it was hard to find the mates, I still cringe at the thought of my shoes being on the floor. I tell you all of this, and you may have some of the same memories, because yelling is not a good way to remember your childhood. If I had not had my Granny, I don't know where I would be. I am blessed to have had my Granny in my life. I am also glad I had the childhood that I did. It has made me the woman I am today. I truly believe this. It helped me to help you!

Please watch the tone of your voice and your words. Words can be KIND or MEAN, the CHOICE is yours!

It seems like patience is getting shorter every year. People are quicker to whine and complain. It almost seems like a badge of honor to post on Facebook about something that is not like you would like it. I know this email has hit home with many of you. I feel that there must be even more who are afraid to tell me their feelings. You don't have to tell me! Be honest with yourself and let go of this guilt along with your impatience and perfectionism.

Behavior Modification for yelling and being short with your babies or anyone else.

1. Keep a journal, each time you yell or say something harsh; even if it becomes a thick book.

2. Look at what is going on when you yell. Are your under time pressure? Is the guilt of a messy home making you lash out?

3. Practice using a whisper to talk to your children. It is very hard to yell in a quiet voice. For your husband; just shut your mouth and don't say what you are thinking!

4. Put that SMILE on your face. It is really hard to be mad with your have that big grin.

5. When you catch yourself filling with rage, then take a deep breath and look at those sweet faces of your babies.

6. Don't forget, the children need to be trained how to handle cleaning chores too.

7. Your babies are only little once. They will be grown before you know it. I know mine is forty years old.

8. Another thing to do when you are mad is leave the room. Go outside!

9. Say a little prayer and ask God for patience.

10. When you feel like posting something hateful on Facebook; go watch a kitten video.

11. When you are about to shoot off a hateful text; then click on a Youtube gospel song on your phone. It helps me derail my frustration.

This goes for sending hateful emails too. In the time it takes to complain about an email you have received; you could unsubscribe from their FREE Service. Remember my 3 rules to live by.

Don't sweat the small stuff; what doesn't matter, Doesn't matter. (Who is going to remember the spilled milk 15 years from now)

Laugh every day, even if it is at yourself. (all accidents, have a funny side, if you will find them and embrace the moment with laughter)

Love like there is no tomorrow. (This one will get your right where it hurts most. Do you want your child's last memory of you to be one of yelling and anger.)

It is up to you to change this nasty behavior.

I feel that it has to do with the fact that you still have put time pressure on yourself.

Make your plan(routines) and work the plan as fast as you can. This way you will have the time to spend teaching and loving your babies through their little ups and downs. It is up to you to show them how to handle their anger. Were you ever taught? Now is the time to change. When you know better you will do better. No excuses.

Enjoy the gift you are given.

Ask FlyLady

What is Weekly Home Blessing?

Dear FlyLady,

What is the one hour list where we do certain things for 10 minutes? Something like weekly blessing? dusting for 10, vacuuming for 10?

FlyBaby MJ

Dear FlyBaby MJ,

You are not the only one to wonder about this. We forget that many new people join each week and don't know what Weekly Home Blessing Hour is all about.

Let me explain this in a simple way. It is where we spend 1 hour sprucing up our home. Michele my friend calls it Redding UP. I guess this is what her mother called it when they were getting ready for company.

This is NOT DETAILED CLEANING! It is just the middles and a quick and easy clean up.

We use our timer! This is a MUST! Your timer tells you to quit and go on to the next thing! You can also get a pretty good work out too! Because you are going as fast as you can.

Now don't feel guilty if you can't do them all in one day. I spread mine out over the whole week and do one a day. Some of our members do one Weekly Home Blessing Hour on Monday (to recover from the weekend) and another one on Friday (to get ready for the weekend). Others put them in a bowl and each family member draws one out. Make it fun! Put on some fast music and FLY around your house!

I have a Post-it Note on my bathroom door that tells me what I do on each day of the week. There are 7 things. You can do them in any order you like. One of our members puts her 7 Blessings on her bathroom mirror. As she does one she moves it to the other side of the mirror. Her goal is to get them all moved to the other side by the end of the day. Your creativity is amazing.

Monday Focus On this page you will see the list of seven blessings. I have also done a podcast that helps you do it! It is like having me on your shoulder to walk you through your Weekly Home Blessing. You know how bossy I can be! LOL

Join us for a Facebook Live Show as we Bless our Homes together with 2 minute blessings.

July's Habit: Swish and Swipe

#21 My #1 Concern

Dear FlyLady,

July's habit has come at a perfect time in my life. I wasn't a regular swish-and-swiper until about two weeks ago, when my fiancé and me moved in with my in-laws for a little while.

It's only a temporary thing, and we're grateful we don't have to rent, but about 5 minutes after I unpacked the last box, I took one good look around and I shuddered a little. The house is so, so dirty. Dust, hair and clutter everywhere, but that's not my main concern. What really made me cringe was the kitchen and bathroom, both of which have soap scum and mold in the crooks and crannies, years of clutter everywhere I look and stains I really don't want to know the origin of.

I had been to that house before, but when you're a guest, you don't notice those things as much. Now I was living here, and I felt like I wanted to cry a little, that's how overwhelmed I felt. Plus, it's someone else's dirt, that grosses me out even more.

Then came the month of July with FlyLady's habit of swishing and swiping. My number one concern was that I didn't really dare to brush my teeth or go to the bathroom. Both the toilet and the sink were so dirty I couldn't really look at them. So I began to swish and swipe.

The first day, it took me half an hour, a lot of soap, a couple of rags and the odd gag, but I have kept at it and since a couple of days, the toilet looks new again. Who knew it could be nice and sparkling white? I still have to take a toothbrush and clean the faucet, but the actual sink is shiny and disinfected. I washed myself at that sink this morning and felt genuinely clean. This simple accomplishment of cleaning and maintaining two such important aspects of personal hygiene has given me hope that I will, at some point, feel comfortable living there.

As for the rest of the house, well... Baby steps, baby steps, baby steps. Just swish and swipe, daily missions and 15 minutes at a time, I have to keep telling myself that, right? And as daunting as the task may seem, I just love blessing the house after all those years of neglect. I feel like a FLYfairy! Either way, thank you for your wonderful system, which has helped me turn this stressful situation into an exciting project.

And thank you for swish and swipe, which reminds me all that no matter what's going on in my life, a clean toilet and a sink to freshen up at go a very long way.

Have a lovely day!

Greetings,

Flyfairy Jo from Belgium

This week we are in Zone 4: Your Master Bedroom, Closet, and Bathroom.

  • Vacuum

  • Quick Mop
  • Polish Mirrors and Doors
  • Purge magazines/catalogs
  • Change Sheets
  • Empty all trash cans

You can have FlyLady coach you through the Weekly Home Blessing hour by listening to her.

This takes approximately one hour; some tasks take less than 10 minutes.

Zone 4: Mission #1 Monday

Dear Friends,

This week we are in the Master Bedroom, today I want you to spend 15 minutes under your bed! Take this time to get the things out from under the bed that you have shoved under there during a mad stash and dash through the house.

15 minutes might not be enough, but for today just try to put a dent in the stuff that you have put there. Things that just don't belong. If you don't have anything under your bed, then grab a vacuum cleaner or broom and get the dust bunnies that have been multiplying under there.

FlyKid Mission #1 Monday

Hi Kids,

Today I want you to open up the doors of your closet and check to see if you have any clothes that have fallen off of the hangers and have become jumbled up on the floor of the closet.

Set a timer or ask a grown up to set a timer for 5 minutes and see how much you can hang back up. If you can't reach the rod to hang these things back up, ask a grown up to give you some hangers, you then hang the clothes on the hangers, then ask them to help you hang them up. If you need to set the timer again, then do so for another 5 minutes. If you find some things that no longer fit or you do not use, put those in a bag and give them to a grown up to bless someone else with.

Remember less stuff to clean and put away means more time to play.

Have fun!

Piles of Laundry Cause CHAOS

Dear Friends,

In a few days we will start practicing a new habit! This habit is going to change you and your family's life. Yes it may sound strange, but your laundry not being done stands in the way of the peace in your home.

1. It's hard to get dressed to lace up shoes with no clean clothes.

2. Piles of laundry make your home messy.

3. Getting ready for school is hard without clean clothes.

4. You don't know what fits when you don't wash the clothes.

5. Too many clothes makes it hard to put clothing away.

6. Children don't have uniforms for their game day.

7. You waste money when you buy clean underwear for the whole family.

8. Spots become set in when not laundered in a timely fashion.

9. Husbands don't feel loved when they have to search for clean underwear.

10. Children are embarrassed to go to school in dirty clothes.

11. You feel guilty but still don't step up because you are overwhelmed.

12. You have to do a load of laundry to get the family out the door.

13. Getting ready for church makes everyone hateful.

14. The search for clean socks results in a new fashion statement.

Get ready to start with this new habit. Our goal is to do one load of clothes a day. I know that does not sound like much but eventually you will be searching for something to wash.

To make it easier to put your laundry away clean out one drawer for every member of you family. Keep in mind that laundry has 5 steps; sort, wash, dry, fold or hang, and put away.

You can do this!

Clothes are Everywhere

Dear FlyLady,

I have so much clutter I don't know what to do. My daughter and her three kids live with my husband and I. While we love their company they bring added clutter to ours already cluttered place. What can I do to get control over the clothes. I feel I am washing clothes every day and getting nowhere. I need a flight plan!

I am not an organized person and have spent my life wishing I was. Your swish and swipe plan was great for me and my bathroom smells wonderful at last. Thanks for the tip! Please enlighten me on how to get control of this problems. Note, she has lots of shoes and clothes; short of throwing them away what other options do I have.

Surround by clothes

in Alabama

Dear Surrounded by Clothes,

Laundry and clothing are a big part of our clutter. Our August Habit is laundry, but we don't have to wait till then to get started. We practice doing a load a day!

I want you to sit down with your daughter and babies and have a family meeting. Keep in mind that this is your home and you all have to figure out how live together in peace and harmony in a clutter free environment. It is your home and your grandchildren, but doing their laundry should not be your responsibility. You are welcome to help her but she needs you set some rules.

Three children have lots of clothes that do not fit. This is why there is so much laundry. Clothing that don't fit get tossed into the dirty clothes basket. The first thing you and your daughter need to do is clear out one drawer for each member of the family. This will make putting things away much easier.

Then you are going to have to figure out what fits each child. Children don't need tons of clothing. A fun way to decide what to keep and what to give away is to have a fashion show. Since I don't know how old each child is then this could be easier with older children. Put on some model runway music and show them how to prance around the floor showing off their cute clothes. This is also a good idea to put together outfits for school!

Next is establishing a routine for laundry. Once you declutter the clothing, laundry will be more efficient because unwanted clothing will be out of the pile. Laundry has five parts: Sort, wash, dry, fold and PUT AWAY! The Sort step and the Put Away Step are responsible for making your home look messy!

When clothing is piled on chairs, dressers and thrown in the floor our rooms look like clothes basket blew up. Eventually the clean clothes and dirty clothes get all mixed up and your laundry has doubled.

Here is a quick solution! Gather up all the clothes and sort them into wash piles. Bag them up in trash bags or pillow cases. Then take them to a Laundromat and get them all done at once. Stagger them in the washers and dryers so they don't all get done at once. Take plenty of baskets and hangers so you can fold and put them in each person's basket. Have one bag for give-away clothes. Place them in the bag as you are folding! Then drop them off as you head home. As soon as you get in the door put all the clothes away.

Once you have decluttered the clothes that are too small or too large and you only have clothes that you wear; you can establish that routine of one load a day. That is start to finish. Some members put a in load as part of their before bed routine and then as part of their morning routine, they place it in the dryer.

July's Habit: Swish and Swipe

#28 Getting Control of My Home

Dear FlyLady,

I've been flying for about 5 weeks and my bathroom fairly sparkles. The longer I do my swish n swipe etc the cleaner it looks.

With my purple rags it makes my mirror gleam like never before! I have zones in my bathtub/ shower so usually just before showering I grab a purple rag and wash 1 wall or section down each day, rotating so that my shower gets completely cleaned in a weeks time.

It takes me less than a minute usually to do this. So simple! I know what you mean about the house cleaning itself. It's all about our habits!

Good habits like The Swish n' Swipe daily means our bathroom stays sparkling without much effort! My routines has helped me get control of my house, be in a better mood, be ready to leave the house at a moments notice, and provided wonderful structure for my 9 and 10 year old who have their own routines.

As a homeschooling SAHM of 5 children including my 4 month old DD, Routines has really changed things at our house! A clean neat house makes children , mom and dad more relaxed and we can enjoy each other more!

Hi Kids,

Today we are going to go after all of our books. Let's take a walk through our house and look for any of our books that we have left around. Let's gather those up and return them to our rooms or where they belong in the house.

Once you have done this take a few minutes to look over your books. Is it time to bless someone else with some of them? Do you have some books that you just did not enjoy? Do you have books that you are no longer interested in reading again? Do you have books that you have outgrown? Today is the day to gather these up and take them to mom or dad and ask them to help you bless someone else with your books that you no longer need.

Question and Answer Day

Trust the Process

Dear Friends,

We have been skeptics most of our lives. I think this is what makes us control freaks. We only trust in ourselves. There comes a time when our way is not working for us and we are forced to try something new.

You heard about FlyLady from a friend while you were at her home. You just can't believe that it can be this simple. You look at her like she has lost her mind and you politely nod. Then you look around her home and it feels so nice. In the back of your mind you think she must be drinking some kind of Kool-Aid. When you get back home; the CHAOS in your home hits you square in the face.

At this point your control freak brain says, "What have I got to lose?" This is when you go to our website and spend hours reading. Then you start questioning everything that I say! What has a shiny sink got to do with getting my house clean?

Does this sound familiar to you? I want you to find the peace that your friend has found. She trusted the process! And it is a process!

The first thing we tell you to do is to go "Shine Your Sink"! I don't care if you have to set all the dirty dishes on the floor because your counters are filled. Just empty out your sink and get it clean and shiny. This is the beginning!

When I was determined to "Get Organized" this is how I started! That shiny sink became my goal each day. That was all I really had to do! I know there many things that need doing in your kitchen. But don't allow the nay-Sayer in you to put more doubt in your head. Trust the process!

Here is what happens! Your kitchen can be a total disaster but when you get up in the morning you see that sink shining back at you. Focus on that feeling. It is a feeling of hope!

My favorite Bible verse is Hebrews 11:1 NIV

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

I have been doing a study on Faith and Trust. It has been interesting. At first I thought they were the same but now I finally see the difference. I was listening to my Christian music when I started to think about Faith and Trust. The song Trust and Obey came on. I listened intently to the words because my focus word for 2017 has been "Obey".

I always try to take the lessons that God is putting in front of me and look for a way to apply them to the purpose that God has given me. That purpose is helping you to find the peace you have been searching for.

The lesson that I can see is for you to trust the process. We teach you to let go of your perfectionism one step at a time. As we help you to peel away the years of clutter and fear; we show you a different way to live.

Please read our messages; let them sink into your heart! Embrace the process instead of fighting it or finding fault. In the end, that hope you felt the first day with that shiny sink will show you what is ahead in your journey.

I love you all!

FlyLady's Calendar Tips

Dear Friends,

I have been brainstorming on how to help you enjoy using your calendar. I have put together a list of 11 Tips to make your calendar work for you!

1. Color Code your calendar. Use a high lighter for each member of your family, a dot or some color to help you recognize who has something when you look across the room at your calendar.

2. Use blank address labels to cover up mistakes or changes in your calendar.

3. Don't procrastinate about putting appointment on your calendar. Do it now! You're your calendar working for you! This way you don't have to try to remember everything.

4. Look ahead so that you can plan for special events or doctor's appointments. Do you need to fast, how about that suit that needs cleaned or a new dress for the wedding?

5. Check the family calendar morning, afternoon and evening. This habit is the Shiny Sink of your brain.

6. Put your calendar in a place that is in front of the family. After all out of sight is out of mind for us.

7. Allow your family to help you use the calendar. This is teaching them the calendar habit. Using a calendar as a tool is giving your children wings.

8. Each week have a family meeting to synchronize your schedules and put them on the family calendar. This is about communicating with each other and having all the information in one place.

9. When you walk in your door, THINK! Do we have something to post on the calendar? Put up a note to remind you. Having that PTA or church bulletin in your purse, the sports schedule in the backpack or that invitation in back of the calendar is not going to get it posted to your family calendar. This habit will keep things from slipping up on you! Don't wait to do it later. Later will be that frantic phone call!

10. Make it your family calendar fun! Use sticker, stars and smiley faces to decorate as well as celebrate accomplishments.

11. Use your calendar to chart your family's milestones. Your calendar will become your family history! Yes you can save your calendars. They will help you to scrapbook.

These 11 tips will help you to use your calendar instead of just buying it and allowing yet another calendar to become clutter in your home. Our calendar is big enough to hold your family's appointments.

Are you ready to FLY with a calendar that helps you stay on your flight path?

August's Habit: A Load of Laundry Daily

#4 Any Little Idea Helps

Dear FlyLady,

I got excited when I saw that this month's habit is Laundry!

I have already gotten a head start on this even before I heard of you about a month and a half ago. I've added your ideas to my own and now have a really great system! We have two boys, ages 8 and 11, and they go through clothes like they go through water! I was starting to feel very overwhelmed. I kept telling myself, if I could just get a handle on the laundry, then the rest of the house wouldn't be such a problem!

So I decided to get each of the boys their own laundry basket, much like another FlyBaby did for her own kids. I don't sort darks and lights... (is that bad?) I just wash everything in cold water, except my towels and sheets, or unless it is delicate. This helps to save energy! Which is a great thing.

I do at least one load a day and I do one person at a time. I wash and then I dry and as soon as it comes out of the dryer, I hang, fold, and put away! Or I have the kids put their own clothes away.

Another thing that has really helped is that I have labeled all of the drawers in our boys' rooms, and even my husband's drawers are labeled! This helps them to help me to put the clothes in the proper drawers instead of mixing it all together! The boys (and my husband) have a bad habit of just throwing everything in the same drawer. Then they can never find what they need!

LOL I read in one of your articles that you do the same thing! I guess "great minds think alike!" I must admit that at first, I hesitated about labeling the drawers, because it really doesn't look "pretty"... but I decided to let go of my perfectionism and I forget about how it looked.

Just the relief in knowing that everything is in its place is enough for me. And maybe before long, everyone will memorize where their clothes go and then we can take the labels off!

Thanks for all your very valuable information and advice! You have blessed many, MANY families through this wonderful program you have going on! God bless you!!!

The kitchen is the heart of our home.

Check out our daily missions in the daily Flight Plan Email!

Dear Friends,

We are in the kitchen this week!Take 15 minutes and scrub your stove top. Soak the knobs and drip pans in hot soapy water while you clean the stove top. Some elbow grease and hot soapy water will take care of a lot.

Don't become a perfectionist and try to get it as clean as the day it was new. Just do the best you can and then scrub the drip pans and knobs. Anything that you do will be better than what it was!

Look for the Silver Lining

Dear Friends,

Every day we receive many wonderful testimonials. I usually close my day by reading several of them. This morning I glanced at my testimonial folder and I noticed something amazing.

Flying works for anyone who is willing to make a change in their attitude. Two of the testimonials were from Texas flood victims; one was flooded and another one's neighborhood was cut off by the water. Both families had great attitudes.

Your attitude is what makes the difference in how our system works for you. Today in the United States, we are celebrating Labor Day. You can either feel sorry for yourself that you have been condemned to a life of hard labor or you can embrace the joy of being homemaker.

Finding joy in everything you do is going to give you a great outlook on life. I remember a song from many years ago that was used in a commercial. Those lyrics were stuck with us; I had to look up the real song. I may have to watch this movie if I can find it. I don't know what that bruise is about on her forehead; but if you are being abused; get out of the abusive situation. Make a plan and get away. There are people out there to help you.

Look for the Silver Lining!

When I was a county commissioner many years ago; I was asked what my personal motto was; I had no clue and then I just blurted out the first thing that came to my mind.

To find joy in everything I do; and to be a devoted loving wife to my sweet darling. I soon realized that if I do the first part of my motto that I don't need the second part because I am already joyful!

Finding joy is going to change your life! We are the nurturers in our families. Please use our messages to help you change your attitude. Only you can do this. No one else is can make you happy! It is up to you.

This simple system works for anyone who is willing to jump in and let go of their perfectionism. That perfectionism is what causes us to procrastinate and blame others. Stop blaming and whining about your situation being different! Let it go and you will begin to see real changes in your home and your family!

We have helped families with ten children to people who put in 50 hours a week outside of their homes; teachers, nurses, police officers, military families, retired people, caregivers, and homeschoolers. You just have to be willing to jump in and follow our lead. We can help you!

You can do this! Your home can become a place of peace if you will look for that silver lining! Joy is everywhere! When you look for it you will find it!

How Do I Unpack from a Move

Dear FlyLady,

So We are now moved into our house. There are so many boxes to unpack. My parents, my children, hubby and I are now all living together. That's 7 people. We moved to a big house with a lot of space but I don't know where to start the unpacking.

Please help!

FlyBaby H.

Dear FlyBaby H,

I do not want you to get overwhelmed. Place the boxes in the rooms where they belong. Put them along a wall; out of the way. You will need a timer and a water bottle to keep you focused and hydrated.

Please do not crash and burn! Now is not the time to get sick, so pace yourself! This is a direct order. If you will take BabySteps, before you know it, you will be settled into your new home and all of this moving will be just a dream.

Now for those of you that are not moving to a new home, you can make your current home feel like a new one if you will pretend that you are moving and join in with our decluttering. It is all of your clutter that makes your home feel small and cramped. It is also this clutter that makes you feel overwhelmed and depressed.

Moving is always hard, but when you take it in BabySteps, it will not kill you!

Are you ready to FLY through your next move?

August's Habit: A Load of Laundry Daily

#11 A Little Encouragement

Dear FlyLady,

I live in Australia and also have a Hills Hoist clothes line, you can wind it up or down and it spins in the breeze.

I have three sons and my absolute favourite job is the laundry. I only ever wash when its not raining, as soon as socks, underwear, sheets, towels are dry I fold them up outside and place in laundry basket and wheel inside, then put them straight away.

I hang all tops and shirts on coat hangers on the clothes line, when dry I hang them straight up in the wardrobe, except for any that need ironing. They remain hanging on an indoor clothes rack until ironed. Long pants are hung from the cuffs and require less ironing, I do not have and ironing basket.

My favourite is to wash the sheets and remake the bed the same day, at night you can smell the sunshine on the sheets. If raining I have a pergola which I place a clothes horse on wheels, at night I just wheel the clothes horse inside.

Hope this is helpful.

We are in Zone 3; Your Main Bathroom and Another Room

Check out our daily missions every day in the Flight Plan Email

Zone 3: Mission #1 Monday

This week we are in the bathroom and another room. The other room will be our Guest or Extra Room! This means whatever room that you have that is your dumping ground. For most people it would be the guest room. You choose the room that needs de-cluttering the most for the other room.

Bathroom:

Clear off the Hotspots that have gathered on the back of the tub and the bathroom sink tops.

Guest/Extra Room/Kid's Room

Grab a bag and do a 27 fling boogie of things to throw away. The things that are obvious trash. We are not doing anything other than getting rid of things to toss. Set your timer for 15 minutes and do as many 27 flings as you can! Have fun with these missions!

Question and Answer Day

Dancing on the FLY

Dear Friends,

I can tell you exactly why I put together a Control Journal! I was tired of building "To Do" Lists! Every day I would put the same thing on the list and every day I would check things off. Was I lazy! NO I call it resourceful.

We love to make lists. It doesn't take long until those lists become boring. Maybe I was just bored with the same thing and I needed a little creativity to make it fun again.

Now listen closely! My Control Journal took shape over several months. I did not build it on my fateful New Years Day that I decided to get organized. It was on that day in 1999 that I made the biggest list of all and promptly decided that it was mean to expect me to do it all in the beginning. That is when I came to the conclusion that it would be much kinder to just practice one habit at a time. That is exactly what I did! I kept my sink clean and shiny for the whole month of January. It was my only requirement and because I didn't pile on with that huge list I could just do what I wanted. I was FLYing from start because I was loving myself enough not to push too hard. Everything I did was fun because I was not under the gun of my perfectionism.

As my habits were established I began to think of them as dance steps. I put them together into logical flow to start my day. One, two, three! One, two, three! One, two, three! Dancing on the FLY!

Basic Steps to my Daily Dance

1. Get up 2. Make bed 3. Go to the bathroom

1. Weigh 2. Check calendar 3. Shower

1. Get Dressed 2. Fix Hair and face 3. Swish and Swipe

1. Take vitamins 2. Turn on computer 3. Put on shoes,

1. Check Laundry 2. Fix coffee 3. Dust Mop the floors

1. Empty dishwasher 2. What's for Dinner 3. Eat breakfast.

1. Fill water bottles 2. Start my music 3. Sit down to work at the computer.

Do you see how it all flows or shall I say FLYs by! One, Two, Three! This takes me about 20 minutes from start to finish because I have done my before bed routine and I am not trying to function in clutter.

My Control Journal became a place to hold my routines. I still had to be reminded when I was in the bathroom what the steps were. I am still a SHE and I will always be a SHE! This is why I love Post-It Notes. I don't beat myself up because I need them. I have a morning one and a before bed one in my bathroom. This is where I start my day and end my day. I even keep my calendar in my bathroom. I use it to chart my weight and put appointments in red to remind me. I am just starting to list my menu planning on it. This is because I have been cooking more.

Your Control Journal is just a place to keep your routines. It also helps others to see exactly what has to be done in a home. When you keep your routines in a sheet protector, you don't have to rewrite them every day or print them out from our Flight Plan. Use your Control Journal as your Check List for Take Off!

Are you ready to FLY with your Control Journal as your Personal Flight Plan!

If your perfectionism has gotten in the way of you building your Control Journal; I have a solution for you. I made you one to fill in the blanks.

August's Habit: A Load of Laundry Daily

#18 One that was a Life Saver

Dear FlyLady,

I have been fluttering for about 5 years now. Some things are in order but other parts of my life/house are still in chaos. I remind myself to take babysteps and whatever I can accomplish is better than nothing. I work a 60 hr week with a schedule that changes each week, so routines can be a challenge for me. But some of the routines are sticking.

One that was a lifesaver for the last month was the laundry routine. Each member of the family has their own laundry basket. Fortunately my oldest DD and DH do their own laundry. But I still do the laundry for the youngest DD and any general household laundry like sheets and towels. We have developed a routine in our home so there is no mount laundry anymore. I do laundry 3 days a week, DD and DH do laundry 2 days a week so everything is under control through the 5 laundry days.

A month ago, I was doing yard work and came in contact with poison sumac. It was a mild case, thank goodness, but each day I got up out of bed, changed the sheets. Each day after the shower, the towels went into the laundry just to make sure I wasn't spreading it. Once that seemed to be under control, my two DD came home from camp with lice. To get it under control, I was daily changing sheets and laundering towels.

The routines I had developed for laundry helped me through what could have been a rough month. Every day I did a load of laundry just like a typical day. I was not panicking because of the poison sumac or lice, because I knew that I could manage because a load a day was not out of the question because I have been doing it for four years now. I can't imagine what would have happened before I started doing laundry the FlyLady way. I probably would have run out of clean sheets and towels and had piles of laundry everywhere. Thank you.

A load a day keeps CHAOS away!

Do you have a story or tips that will help other FlyBabies with this habit?

We have 4 kids ages 9, 5, 3, and 21 months and I am 27 weeks pregnant.

Laundry in our house is one of my biggest challenges. It always seems to be piling up.

Here is my best laundry idea to date!

I hung a small cork board near my dryer in my laundry room.

As I am folding my laundry I pin any unmatched socks on to the board. This keeps me from putting odd socks away in drawers and never finding a match, and if I haven't found their mates within 30 days they are recycled into rags or tossed out.

Helps keep our sock drawers nice and tidy too.

Happy flying everyone!!

We are in Zone 4; Your Master Bedroom, Bathroom, and Closet.

It is a trend! Get in the habit of decluttering in small segments of time. Decide what time of day you are going to tackle this little job, set a timer for 15 minutes, and just do it.

Dear Friends,

This week we are in Zone 4: The master Bedroom, Bathroom, and Closet. The mission for today is to Clean off the top of your dresser. Throw away any trash, and put away random items that have been put there in a stash and dash.

Make sure to dust after you have finished! If the top of your dresser is a major job, set your timer and tackle this 15 minutes at a time.
