What Memories will You Leave Behind?

Dear Friends,

Today has had me thinking about the memories we will leave with our family. We have been emptying Robert's Mother's home. Our homes are filled with memories, if we don't share them they become clutter. This is why we only have things in our home that evoke good memories.

We may not aspire to be a head of state but we can take babystep to make a difference in our world. We are the shining example in our homes. Our personality whether it is positive or negative flows through our family. It is up to us to set the tone in our home. If we are grouchy then our babies will be grouchy, our critters will be fussy and our husband will go hide.

Isn't it better to have our babies remember us for the twinkle in our eye when they ask if we could come and play and then we say yes!! All because our homes are not weighing heavily on our hearts; now I have huge puddles rolling down my face. Life is too short to not live it to the fullest. When you are dead and gone your babies are not going to remember how clean our homes were, but they will remember that their mother was happy and filled their home with love.

I just heard the music Going Home from Antonin Dvorak's New World Symphony on TV. I turned off the TV and put on my favorite radio station to hear mine and Robert's favorite symphony by Camille Saint-Saens; The Organ Symphony. That beautiful music brought back a touching memory of our first kiss. I guess it is those little memories that stay with us all of our lives. My sweetie choreographed our first kiss to the 4th movement when the organist pulls out all the stops on the organ and fills the air with the most wonderful sounds. We don't listen to it often but when we do we are touched by its beauty and power.

I feel that this was a God Breeze to affirm this message to you! We all have the power to change the world even if it is just our little neck of the woods. Our attitude is everything. I want for you what I have Peace! Peace in knowing that I will be remembered for my smile and my positive contagious spirit! I live by these three rules.

Don't sweat the small stuff; what doesn't matter doesn't matter.

Laugh every day even if it is at yourself.

And love like there is no tomorrow!

We all have the power to change the world in our little neck of the woods; it doesn't matter if you are from a big city or a small town! Tap into the power that is within you!

I love you all!

Help Me When It Comes to Bill Paying

Hi FlyLady

Re: Office in a Bag (Just a zippered Notebook cover) (Trapper Keeper)

I am sure this product is useful in many other ways but maybe FlyBabies my be paying their bills online instead of by a cheque. For me, I would have loved to use the Office in a Bag when I used to pay my bills via cheques, but now that I pay via my computer, I can't really use it. I put all my bills next to my computer, then all I have to do it start up my computer and pay the bills, then file them away.

Thanks for all that you are doing for us FlyBabies

Flying in TO

Dear Flying in TO,

You are so blessed to have a place to put your bills. Just make sure you don't cover them up with more papers that may end up becoming Hot Spot. We have one place to put our bills and nothing else goes there.

Have you ever heard of Parkinson's Law? It doesn't matter if it is about paying bills or mailing a card. When we keep everything in a place and we can find it and things get done with little effort.

Now with the iPhone and other phones we can pay bills while we are waiting for soccer practice to end or on our lunch hour. But if you don't have your bills all in one place and in your Office in a Bag you can't use these priceless moments to get something done. We have learned the hard way never to put our bills in our bottomless pit of a purse.

The other good thing about an Office in a Bag is that your desk is portable. You can write a thank you note, address a birthday card or send a real letter to an old friend. You don't have to procrastinate because everything is in one place. I use my Office in a Bag for my greeting cards. I can always find a card because I have them in sheet protectors per category; Birthday, anniversary, graduation, condolence and thank you cards. Everything is there that I would need to get a card ready to mail.

So many times we allow Parkinson's Law to kick in without even thinking, As Professor C. Northcote Parkinson says, "Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion. Do not allow yourself to get caught up in this inefficient way of thinking. He uses the example of a lady wanting to send a card to her niece. She has to look for the right card, find her glasses, then; after she has toiled with writing the perfect words on the card: she has to try to find the address; then to find a stamp. Then it is raining outside and she can't find her umbrella so she can walk down the street and put it in the mailbox. All of this over a little card that could take many of us just three minutes to write, address, stamp and mail. Why did she take so long to accomplish this simple task?

It was because she didn't have a system for efficiently using her time. Busy people keep every thing they need for paying bills and sending cards in one spot; or do they!!! Do you procrastinate about sending cards, letters and Thank You notes because of Parkinson's Law? Do you have to hunt for your bills in your mail hotspot, a pen, stamps or better yet you can't pay bills because you do not know how much money you have in the bank and you need to balance six months of bank statements or spend hours bringing down your balance in your checkbook. Or do you just write the checks and pray that you won't be overdrawn!!

You don't have to live this way another day!

May's Habit: Get Up and Move

#23 Nice Exercise Bike

Dear FlyLady,

Sometimes it all seems to come together so well!

It is Wednesday, Anti-procrastination Day.

This week's zone is the master bedroom.

We are Moving in May.

I have been putting off decluttering the pile of clothes in my bedroom which had taken up residence on my "expensive clothes hanger" aka the exercise bike. So I set my timer and in less than 15 minutes I sorted the clothes, packed up those to be donated and took them to the car, hung up the good clothes, and flung the really unusable ones. Whew!

That's when I realized that I had a really nice exercise bike! Since we are Moving in May, I was able to set my timer and use the next 15 minutes to actually RIDE the bike!

Now I'm enjoying a glass of iced tea with my "clothes rack" decluttered and my body exercised.

Beautiful!

May's Habit: Get Up and Move

It's May, and that means it's time to get moving! Each May we practice the habit of getting our bodies used to a few minutes of daily loving movement. This could be walking, running, gardening, dancing, etc. Whatever you do, make it fun and it will get done!

I can help you get a jumpstart with my book,

The CHAOS Cure! ~FlyLady

This week we are in Zone 4: Your Bedroom, bathroom, and your closet!

This week we are working on Zone 4: The Master Bedroom. It also includes any bathroom you may have off the master bedroom, and whatever lurks in the bedroom closet. This will be an ongoing process. You may or may not get the entire room cleaned this week. That is not the objective. Any thing you do in this room now will be an improvement over the way it was last week. Next month you will focus on it again.

Your bedroom should be the cleanest room in your home. Many of you still use yours as a garbage/clutter disposal for the rest of the house. If your bedroom is clean and clutter free, then it becomes an inviting haven for building your relationship with your spouse. The best gift you can give your children is a strong marriage. This is true whether your children are 2 or 40 years old.

Your task is to declutter this area. Spend 15 minutes a day this week doing something, anything, in the master bedroom. It did not get dirty in a and it will not get clean in a week, but you will be making head-way. It is a trend! Get in the habit of decluttering in small segments of time. Decide what time of day you are going to tackle this little job, set a timer for 15 minutes, and just do it.

Friday is our day to clean out our car and purse; then plan something for Date Night!

We use each Friday as our Declutter your Purse and Car day. This only takes a few minutes and saves us lots of time later. Without the candy wrappers, old receipts, and other trash in your purse, finding your car keys becomes a breeze! Removing all the clutter and trash from your car ensures that you won't be hit by any UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects) in the event of a crash. Set aside a few minutes just for these two tasks each Friday. Here's a list of things to toss:

  • Old gum and candy wrappers
  • Soda bottles
  • Scraps of paper/old receipts
  • Drive thru bags and cups
  • Jackets/coats/shoes

Set your timer and get to it.

"Decluttering is contagious!" ~ FlyLady

Friday is also Date Night. Relationships have to be nurtured. If not, you are going to wake up one day when the children are grown and not know the person you chose to spend your life with. It is up to us to make sure we grow together! Now don’t think I am going to leave out you single people! We all have relationships! Some are marital and others are friendship. As for those friendships that you have let fall by the wayside because your home was too messy for people to come over, it is time to pick up the phone and just say hi!

Relationships are not just inanimate objects; they are made of people with feelings. When we open up our hearts and let someone else in, we become better people! We can’t just ignore the relationship and expect it to stay the same. People need attention! You need attention! If you give it, it will come back to you! I promise.

Zone 4: Mission #5 Friday

Dear Friends,

Today is the day to remake your bed. This may take a little longer than usual but so well worth it. Strip your bed and remake it. Get someone to help you flip the mattress, if you can't then try just to turn it around. If you have some fabric spray spritz your linens or if you have had any colds or flu's in the house lately consider spraying your mattress and pillows with an anti-bacterial spray. Then place those crisp freshly washed sheets and blanket on. Take extra care when making the bed.

Really tuck those corners in and fluff the pillows. An extra tip is to toss your pillow in the dryer with a dryer sheet for added freshness and fluff. Use your bedspread or comforter and make up the rest of the bed. Take your time and know how much you will enjoy getting into your bed tonight and how wonderful it will feel.

Maybe tonight you will go to bed a little earlier or stay in bed a little longer tomorrow morning just taking some time to enjoy something so simple yet rewarding.

Five Star Review

The FlyLady is Such a Good Motivator! I Don't Cringe When People Pull Up Unannounced. I am Happy!

I highly recommended this book for any type family or single person no matter what age you or your children are. I was a fly baby for a short time years ago and recently, I found you on fb about 6 months ago. I ordered the book and have really enjoyed the revival in my heart and my house.

AMAZON

I used to cringe in agony when I would see people pull up in the driveway now I don’t. Just like Marla says the husband has started organizing and getting rid of his stuff too. The teenage boys are a work in progress. I loved the tips on , the delicate cycle, storing sheets under the bed( I’ll Have more room in my linen closet and that’s major when you are limited on closet space like us) .

The FlyLady is such a good motivator! I have found my self quoting her and singing the songs. Earlier I was cleaning and was upset about something having water spots and Marla popped in my head and said “that’s your protectionism “ and I moved on.! I so wish I would have stuck with The Flylady years ago when the kids where younger but, so glad to have her now.

11 Steps to a Clean Car

Dear Friends,

Have you been putting off dealing with your clutter? Everyday is anti-procrastination day when you have putting off getting rid of your clutter!

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR??

1. The garbage truck to back up to your home and forcibly remove your trash.

2. For your trash to evaporate like water.

3. For little elves to come in and sort through your clutter for you!

4. For your children to wake up one morning and say Mommy I don't need this any more??

5. For your husband to take the first step to guide you out of your cluttered home.

6. The spring flood to declutter for you? This is not a fun way to declutter; take my word for it and all of those people the survived flooding.

7. Not a flood but fire this time. Well sister if I don't light a fire under you to get this done then spontaneous combustion is going to do it for you!

8. There is no hurry. I can get rid of some things; I still have time!

9. The sorting has taken place but it is filling up the garage for a spring yard sale! It is not really gone is it!!!

10. You have decided to move it all to a bigger house so that you can keep all this trash close at hand.

11. I don't know where to start! There is just too much stuff!

WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO YOURSELF!

Your clutter is strangling you! Get rid of it now. Don't wait for someone else to motivate you to get up and do it. You can do anything for 15 minutes! Go declutter something and put it at the curb with a FREE sign on it! Just see how fast it will go away, but it will not get up and walk out there by itself.

It is time to put some more effort into getting rid our clutter!

Help Me with My Messy Car

Dear FlyLady,

I have had great success decluttering our home. I still can't seem to gain control over my car. Clutter is always falling out. Please give me some motivation to get my car clean and keep it that way.

-Ashamed of my Vehicle!

Dear Ashamed,

You don't have to feel ashamed another day. We have a basic weekly plan to help you establish a day to clean out your car. Here is an essay I wrote to help us tackle this final frontier.

The Final Frontier

UFOs are Un-tethered Flying Objects in your car! Yes you know the ones I am talking about! Our cars are usually the last frontier when it comes to getting organized. When I was a small child I was hurt by bottle in our car. I still have the scar to show for it. Think of it this way when you are riding in a car going 55 mph if you have to stop abruptly everything in the car becomes a missile. Think about being hit by a baseball or a bottle that was thrown at that speed.

Here is the worst thing about UFOs in your car! You are embarrassed for anyone to ride with you. I know because I am just like you! My car has been clear of clutter on the inside for several years. There is no telling how many accidents have occurred because a bottle rolled out from under the seat. Then it got under our foot or brake and we reached down to get it.

So how do we stop from cluttering up our cars? We have to establish simple habits that will keep the clutter eliminated.

1. Don't eat in your car. If you do, then bag up the trash as soon as everyone is finished. The bag the fast food came in is a great bag to hold the trash. When you get out of the car, find a trash can.

2. Every time you get home empty the car of things you put in it before you left. Not only will this keep your family safe from UFOs but it will deter thieves. When there is nothing in the car there is no temptation to break a window. My purse was stolen from my car once when I went into a funeral home to pay my respects.

3. While you are filling your car up with gas; play a game with the children to pick up the trash in your car. Then throw it away. They can hand it to you through the car window after you have filled up.

4. Keep things in your trunk, confined in zippered bags or under a cargo net in your van or SUV.

5. Establish a day for blessing your car. Fill it up, Clean it out and Shine it up! We do it on Fridays. We have some simple tools for this; Rubba Scrubba. Rubba Scubba sweeps the floor and seats, Duster does the dash and console. Our purple rags get the windows sparkling. That is if you put them in your hand and use them.

Don't put your family's safety in jeopardy because you don't think you have time. Think of it as Swish and Swipe for your car. Daily maintenance takes less time than a whole day clean up to get ready to go somewhere with strangers in your car. Be sure and keep UFOs contained in the trunk or glove box.

It's Friday, time to Clean Out Your Car Day!

May's Habit: Get Up and Move

#30 Tired Momma Moving in May

 Dear FlyLady,

I had my first child about 6 months ago. Before becoming pregnant, I was an exercise queen. I loved doing workout videos, running, any sort of exercise. When I didn't work out for a couple of days in a row, I would crave a workout. While pregnant, I did some prenatal stretches...but nothing like before.

When I was finally cleared by my doctor, I started working out again. I had a pretty good routine going while I was home on maternity leave. Even the first month or so back at work, I would be fairly consistent on working out. Eventually, my healthy self and my tired momma self got into it. My healthy self knew that waking up a little early to workout was good for me, while my tired momma self thought that a little extra sleep was what I needed.

My tired momma self won!

As the days in April came and went without me being able to mark a completed workout on my calendar, I knew I needed to do something about it. I knew that I had to take care of myself before I could truly be able to take care of DD and DH. How was I going to find the motivation though?

As the end of April approached, I told myself that I would start again on a workout routine in May. So imagine my surprise and delight when I learned that this month's habit was Moving in May. I've created myself a workout plan for May, and I haven't missed a day yet. I had to realize that exercising didn't have to be p******.

I could do a little in the morning, some after work, and some more after DD went to sleep. The one thing I always do after work though is pushups. I lay my DD on the floor under me...every time I reach the bottom of the pushup, I'm rewarded with a kiss. My DD also loves when I do my squats with her in the baby carrier. Who knew that pushups and squats were so enjoyable!

Happily Moving in May,

Fly(Momma with a)Baby

Zone 5 Mission #5 Friday

Dear Friends:

Today is the last day of the Living Room Zone. Your mission for today is to place something pretty in the room that is just for you. I am thinking of some lovely flowers that are from your garden or a small bouquet that you can purchase for just a few dollars.

Maybe you have a lovely arrangement or plant somewhere in your home that would be just perfect in your freshly decluttered living room! Enjoy!

FlyKid Mission #5 Friday

Hi Kids,

For today's challenge you may need to ask Mom or Dad for help. We are going to make our beds as soon as we wake up!

This means to pull the sheets and covers up and straighten them. Then place your pillow at the top of the bed. It is so nice see your room with a made bed. It is one of those things that makes your room look less messy.

If you do not know how to make your bed, ask Mom or Dad to show you how. With practice you will be able to do this on your own and have your room look so much neater.

Just Because You Can

Dear Friends,

Just because you can, does that mean you should? This is a problem that many of us are faced with each day; from our homes, board rooms to halls of Congress. Forcing our will on others is definitely a control issue. It is our insecurities that cause us to use every tactic we know to compel others into doing things our way.

We are given our children to train into responsible adults. If we make all their decisions for them, they will never know the joy or disappointment of their actions. A dear friend who owned a summer camp once explained to me that children rarely get the chance to pick the activities they are involved in when they are at home. At camp they have the opportunity to make their own decisions, while living day to day with the result of their actions. This is teaching our children to be responsible adults.

When we expose our children to the perfectionism of our parents and their parents, we rob them of joy. The joy comes from doing a job that makes them happy because they wanted to do it instead of being forced against their will. What good does it do you, if you MAKE someone do something! You are the all powerful controlling head of the house. So what if you can push your will on others. Wouldn't it be much nicer if they did things without being asked?

You have expectations and when the job isn't done you get mad, yell, pout, or even do things like pitching a fit to get your way. You may be one of those silent passive aggressive types who puts up little signs to show your disapproval of their actions. This is really sad! Bitterness is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die!

It is fine to ask for help, it is not good to assume that your family knows what you expect. I don't expect you to do all the work in the house. I do expect you to set a good example for your family. This attitude of, you are going to do this or else; sucks the life right out of you. Why do we do play these games with our family, ourselves and society?

I am trying to teach you how to find peace in your life. This is not about teaching your family how to act! All I can do is help you to realize self-destructive behavior. Our FLYing techniques are just for you. The corresponding change in your family is the result of your loving attitude. I know you don't love housework, but you love blessing your family. When housework becomes a labor of love, then you will be really FLYing!!

Your attitude determines your altitude! How high do you want to FLY!!!

You don't have to feel ashamed another day. We have a basic weekly plan to help you establish a day to clean out your car. Here is an essay I wrote to help us tackle this final frontier. Your perfectionism is why you don't clean out your car. You don't think you have time to do it right.

Don't procrastinate another day!

My car has been clear of clutter on the inside for almost two years.

We have some simple tools for this; Purple Rags and Rubba Scrubba. Rubba Scubba sweeps the floor and seats. Our purple rags get the windows sparkling and dash clean.

It's Friday time to Clean Out Your Car Day!

June's Habit: Drink Your Water

#6 Drinking Water can save Lives!

I have only been flying a few months. I just need to mention few things.

1) I just returned from a seven day cruise with one of my best friends. I actually laughed out loud the very first morning when I was in the bathroom, I caught myself looking for the toilet brush to get ready to swish and wipe!

2) The timer has saved my life! I have Attention Deficite Disorder and am a procrastinator. I am now able to "Fly" from one task to another because of the timer and accomplishing things that never got looked at before. Thank you.

3) Not only did my two fur babies miss me, I think my house did too!

My hubby did have my kitchen sink shiny! The rest of the house, not so much. The best part was that I just took it little by little as the timer permitted me. I am happy to say that within three days that I was back, my house looks great! I actually look forward to 2 minute, 5 minute, and 15 minute intervals with my timer.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I can help you get a jumpstart with my book,

The CHAOS Cure! ~FlyLady

This week we are in Zone 1: Your Front Porch, Entrance, and Dining Room!

This week our Zone is very important to our homes. The entrance to our homes make the first impression on our guests, our family and ourselves. When we walk into a clean and tidy home our whole attitude will be uplifted. This puts a smile of pride on our faces. We have gone so long, looking at such a terrible mess, that we have been ashamed to answer the door. I want you to get rid of guilt that accompanies clutter and CHAOS. To do this you have to get off your franny and start to declutter this area.

Your task is to declutter this area. Spend 15 minutes a day this week doing something, anything, in these rooms. They did not get dirty in a week and they will not get clean in a week, but you will be making headway. It is a trend! Get in the habit of decluttering in small segments of time. Decide what time of day you are going to tackle this little job, set a timer for 15 minutes, and just do it.

Friday is our day to clean out our cars and purses; then plan something for date night!

I promise.

Do you have Date Night ideas? Send them to Fly...@flylady.net with Date Night in the subject line. We would love to hear and share them with other FlyBabies.

Zone 1: Mission #5 Friday

Dear Friends,

For today let's grab our feather dusters and dust off the leaves on our house plants and give them a drink of water! If you want bonus points you can pull of some of the dead leaves and blooms, you know....declutter the plants!

If you don't have any live plants but have some artificial arrangements, dust those off and dump any loose leaves and petals.

FlyKid Mission #5 Friday

Hi Kids!

Today is really easy - check your bedroom floor for any paper clutter that you do not need and toss it in the recycle bin or the trash can. Check your floor for things that you do not need, love, or use!

Q and A Day

Dear Friends,

Do It Later

Dear Friends,

If you have been procrastinating waiting for someone else to do something then I want you to look at the martyr in you. Just who do you think is going to do this thing that is weighing you down? We are famous for waiting till we can't stand things any longer, to get up and clean. We don't have to work ourselves into a tizzy any more. All we have to do is get up and do it. It will not take long if you will set your mind and body into motion.

The hardest thing for us to do is get started. Once we do, it does not take as long as we have convinced ourselves that it was going to be. Can you see how we were allowing ourselves to live in another virtual reality; things are much harder than they really are in that altered universe. This is our way of allowing procrastination to take over our reality. It keeps us locked in clutter and CHAOS; all because we believe that things take longer than they really do.

Let's step back into the real world where dishwashers only take four minutes to unload and your bed takes two minutes to make up. This is a fun place to live! When we quit living in the virtual reality of burdened living we find it much easier to go about our daily activities.

Just now while I was on the phone, I complete something that I have been procrastinating about; filling up my supplement container with my daily dosages of vitamins and minerals. When they are not readily available I forget to take them. When I don't take them; I begin to feel bad. It is to my advantage to do this once a week and not think that this is going to take forever. What happens is, I remember to take them and look at my container and say I can do that later! I remember to take them because I have an alarm set to remind me daily.

Why do I set myself up for failure! I know better, but in that virtual reality that I slip in an out of, I am not a priority! What have you been putting off? I will guarantee that has to do with you. I want you to set your timer and go do what ever it is. When you get through with your procrastinated blessing send us an email to Fly...@flylady.net and put I DID IT in the subject line! Tell us what you did and how long it took you! You will feel better once you get this off your mind.

Ready set go!

Where Does Detailed Cleaning Fit In?

Hi there

I'm a stay at home mum with two little kids and I'm wondering where the detailed cleaning fits..

By the time you've done morning and afternoon routines, looked after kids and done the daily mission and weekly home blessing hour there doesn't seem to be any time left! Especially if you go out during the day.

Thanks for your help.

Kind Regards,

Cate

Dear Cate,

The Detailed Cleaning List is something you don't have to worry about if you get our emails. Every evening at 5:30pm EDT I send ut our daily mission. Each daily mission is from our Detailed Cleaning List. When you spend the 5-15 minutes on each daily mission; you will never have to spring clean again.

Here are the Detailed Cleaning Missions for this week. Don't think to hard on these. You can do this and it won't take you very long.

This Next Week's Missions

June Zone 3 Missions Your Main Bathroom

Zone 3: Mission #1 Monday

Dear Friends:

We have moved through the zones and we have arrived in the bathroom and an extra room!Your mission for today is to do a 27 fling boogie in the bathroom! Get rid of those shampoos, conditioners, hair gels, etc., that you have held onto but you don't use them! Toss them! Set your timer for 15 minutes and grab a trash bag and start flinging! You might even be able to get in a second 27 fling in under 15 minutes!

For the extra Room this month, let's get in to the guest bedroom. We will continue with the 27 Fling Boogie in this room. So, set you timer for 15 minutes and start flinging!

Zone 3: Mission #2 Tuesday

Dear Friends:

Today we are going to shine our tubs or showers! We have talked about shinning our sinks since you started and we want you take 5 or 10 minutes to shine that tub or shower. Do not get obsessed with the tub being perfect. You can do this mission while you are in the shower, just scrub the tub with whatever works. Anything is better than nothing, then spritz it with a little windex and dry it with a towel like you shine your sink.

On to the guest bedroom! Today we are going to tackle the bed and get it company ready. If you need to tackle this 15 or 10 minutes at a time that is fine, don't burn out. Now, if the bed is already clean ask yourself "how long has it been since the sheets have been washed? "Babysteps, set your timer for 15 minutes!

Zone 3: Mission #3 Wednesday

Dear Friends:

Bathroom Mission: Today you are to wash your bathroom rugs, shower curtains and accessories. This will take longer than 15 minutes and for those of you that are working outside the home you may have to schedule this. In total, to take the rugs to the machine and bring them back to the bathroom is less than 15 minutes but the wait time for the washing machine and dryer will take up some time. If you have not rebooted your laundry this is a good time to do that!

For the guest bedroom, Get your feather duster and get the cobwebs out of the corners. I have a bad habit to not step foot in our guest bedroom for a few days, and when I do it is only for a second. I am sure this is a cringe worthy mission, however it has to be done. You CAN do this, YOU have the power to be brave.

Zone 3: Mission #4 Thursday

Dear Friends:

For the bathroom today, take 10 minutes to toss old cosmetics and perfumes. If you have these items that you have not used for over a year but they are still hanging around, it is time to dump them. If you have not worn anything in the past year then toss it. Most cosmetics have a limited shelf life and are harboring grounds for bacteria. This also applies to lotions and moisturizers.

I understand for some of you who are new to FlyLady there is a lot of hard work to be done. So, today we are going to do an extra 27 Fling Boogie like we did on Monday. For those of you who are FLYing and just need some maintenance in this room your mission is to sweep or vacuum this room. One little thing that helps me is to put on some uplifting music while I do these missions!

Zone 3: Mission #5 Friday

Dear Friends,

Today let's grab some general purpose cleaner and shine those counter tops and bathroom sinks! Clear everything off the counter top and wipe them from side to side and top to bottom. Then use a little elbow grease and scrub your sink, then spritz the counter top and sink with a little windex to make it shine. This is the last day we have in the guest bedroom.

We have worked hard this week, and I am proud of you! Today set your timer and relax. For 15 minutes sit down and have a cup of tea or coffee (don't forget to drink your water). Take time to be still and take care of you.

June's Habit: Drink Your Water

#13 Tip on Drinking Water

Dear FlyLady,

I had a brainstorm I thought other flybabies might enjoy during the month of June as we drink our water!

If you have a smart phone take a picture of a glass of water (make it as attractive and enticing as you can), then put the picture on your phone as your Wallpaper for the month.

Every time my phone rings or I use my phone, I see the glass of water and it is a marvelous reminder.

Thanks for the tip on drinking water to restore ones hydration.

It's much nicer than feeling tired!

This week we are in Zone 2: Your Kitchen; the Heart of your Home.

Focus on one little part — reclaim your kitchen sink. Empty everything out of your sink, shine it up, fill it with hot soapy water, and start washing dishes, one at a time.

  • Do a 27-Fling "Trash" Boogie. Trash is clutter. When the bag is full, take it outside, right away, to the trash bin.
  • Clear out your mail hotspot. Get rid of the old magazines, catalogs, and advertisements.
  • Clear the clutter off your counters one at a time.
  • Clear the clutter off your kitchen table.
  • Take a peek at your pantry. Don't pull everything out and start reorganizing; just take a look, see what you need, and start a grocery list.

If your kitchen is clean but still cluttered: start decluttering. Check out our daily missions. FlyLady usually sends out one during the week which concentrates on decluttering one small area of your kitchen.

Dear Friends,

Today is our last day in the kitchen and I want you to spend 5 minutes and check on the cleaning supplies and things under your sink? Are there things that you don't use? Are there items you have run out of and need to put on your list? Now, what is up with your dish rags and sponges? If you need new ones, put them on the list too. Enjoy your weekend!

The Carrot and the Stick

Dear Friends,

Let's face it, we are a fun loving group of people. This is why the drudgery of housework bogs us down. All work and no Play is makes for a Frazzled FlyBaby.

For FlyBabies, we need to see a light at the end of the tunnel. It is so hard for us to get enthusiastic when all we can see is work. This is why, I want you to regularly schedule breaks, give your self rewards, and only spend just a few minutes on a job. BabySteps.

When you walk into a room that is totally trashed, your eyes see the whole great big mess. That is when we want to throw in the towel, because we can't see us ever getting all of this done. Our perfectionism smacks us right in the face and we give up, since we can't possibly do it all. This is why we have to make it fun with small jobs and you can do these without feeling overwhelmed and martyred. We can do anything for 5 Minutes, if we know that at the end of those 5 Minutes we can stop! I'll bet no one ever told you that before. You have heard this hundreds of times and you have probably said it a hundred times yourself. "Don't come out of your room, until it is clean!" We don't have to clean this way any longer!

Breaking a job into small pieces is the beauty FLYing. With this attitude adjustment, we can eat an elephant if we want to. I don't expect you to slave over your home all day and all night! Now listen closely: It is not ever going to be finished. You could work until you are dead and in the grave and there would still be things that needed your attention. So it is O.K. to stop and just breathe on a regular basis.

This is the carrot and the stick approach to cleaning. If we work in double time, aerobic housecleaning, then you will be able to sit down with a cup of tea and your computer or a book for 10-15 minutes. If you have to, set a timer and work for 15 minutes and rest for 15 minutes. You will find your rhythm and what works best for you. My timer is my favorite tool. It reminds me to change jobs as well as helping me to remember that my laundry is washing or when it is time to drink my water. It also gives me freedom to just sit and relax.

Saturday is Family Fun Day, plan something wonderful with your family. Your routines and babysteps will allow you to enjoy Saturdays!

I don't want house work to be a chore anymore. I want you to enjoy blessing your family with everything you do. This is why I want you to make it FUN!!!!

Are you ready to FLY?

How Do I Keep My Car Clean?

Dear FlyLady,

I have had great success decluttering our home. For some reason I keep procrastinating about cleaning out my car. I still can't seem to gain control over that mess. Clutter is always falling out. Please give me some motivation to get my car clean and keep it that way.

June's Habit: Drink Your Water

#20 I've Been Dehydrated

Dear FlyLady,

I've discovered something amazing! For years I have been addicted to chapstick - I have a tube or tub of carmex in every purse, every pocket, & every drawer so I can always find one because I'm always losing them and I need them about once an hour.

I always figured it's because I'm living in such a dry climate and, of course, I'm getting older. UNTIL I started filling four 18-oz bottles at bed time to drink the next day - I keep them in the frig and as I empty each one I set it next to the water dispenser to fill up at the end of the day.

So I've been doing this for several weeks now, and for the last week or two I haven't needed lip balm any more!!! I've been dehydrated for YEARS and had no idea until I started "making" myself drink 64 oz of water a day whether I was "thirsty" or not.

This is the best "FlyLady" habit yet! No more a slave to lip balm!

Thanks!!!!

This week we are focusing on the main bathroom and one extra room. The extra room may be a second, or third bathroom, a guest bedroom, a child's bedroom, the office, or maybe the laundry room. Just pick one extra room and focus on it this week.

The bathroom: Do you live in fear that someone will actually see your bathroom? It is too easy to close our eyes to the mess that is hiding right behind the bathroom door. This week, we are going to open that door to the bathroom, and BabyStep, by BabyStep, we are going to conquer the CHAOS that is the main bathroom!

Your bathroom should give you sense of relaxation and joy when you enter. This is a place for you to pamper and take care of yourself. Treat the room with love and respect and it will bless you with comfort and peace.

Remove the obvious clutter, take out the dirty laundry, and empty the garbage can.

I promise.

Do you have Date Night ideas? Send them to Fly...@flylady.net with Date Night in the subject line. We would love to hear and share them with other FlyBabies.

Zone 3: Mission #5 Friday

Dear Friends:

Today let's grab some general purpose cleaner and shine those counter tops and bathroom sinks! Clear everything off the counter top and wipe them from side to side and top to bottom. Then use a little elbow grease and scrub your sink, then spritz the counter top and sink with a little windex to make it shine. This is the last day we have in the guest bedroom.

We have worked hard this week, and I am proud of you! Today set your timer and relax. For 15 minutes sit down and have a cup of tea or coffee (don't forget to drink your water). Take time to be still and take care of you.

Ducks in a Row

Dear Friends,

This morning I started to think about how this is our perfectionism creeping in once again. We don't seem to be able to do anything, until we get all of our ducks in a row. As my son's paternal Grandmother used to say. "You milk your ducks and I'll milk mine". That was her way of telling us to mind our own business. She was so right. I don't know what this has to do with anything, but I loved her and she taught me a lot.

Our ducks tend to run into other people's yards. Until we are able to take care of our ducks, we should not even try to tend to others. Have you ever watched a mother duck with her babies in a row behind her? They follow directly behind her. She is setting the example and she keeps them close to her. She cannot force her family to follow her; if she tried to line them all up it would be a big mass of confusion. As it is, she sets the pace and they toddle right behind her.

I know how you think. With our ability to hyper-focus and our perfection thrown in to boot, we have a tendency to want every thing perfect before we even start. How about that control journal of yours? You want it absolutely perfect before you begin to even think about establishing your routines. This is another excuse for not getting started. Do you hear me on this one? If the control journal is not perfect in your eyes, then you have already failed.

Well I am here to tell you, you are wrong. The control journal is just a notebook to hold your routines. Now listen closely to me. Routines can be established by using post-it notes or simple lists put in a notebook. We are not a publishing a book. It is a tool to guide you through your day; it holds your routines, important phone numbers, grocery list and menus. This is such a simple tool, but it doesn't have to be completely finished before you start to use it.

Your baby steps will help you establish your routines one item at a time. You can do this, but don't obsess about it. So if you have said to yourself, "I'll establish my routines, but first I have to get my control journal made:; then you are deceiving yourself once again. It is not the control journal that establishes your routines; it is you. You do the work; you focus on the problem and tackle it with your eyes wide open.

Here is the order that your ducks should be in. You can not force them, you just start the process and it will all fall into place behind you.

Shine your sink

Get dressed to shoes, fix your hair and face.

Lay out your clothes for tomorrow

De-clutter 15 minutes a day

After you have established this small morning and before bed routine, you can begin to add more things. It is not that you even have to think about adding them, it is a natural progression. As you get good at something, you don't have to think about it any longer. You will also be having more time to accomplished things and you will be looking for ways to fill this precious time. I know you don't believe me, but it will happen if you will let and and not think about it too much. Let the system guide you. Babysteps!!!! You can use our calendar to help you get your "Ducks in a Row!"

Menu planning

Laundry routines

Basic weekly plan

Zones

These will all fall right into place, when you get the basics out of the way.

Please Explain Swish and Swipe

undefined

Dear Friends,

I got this little question today so I found a good explanation for you since Swish and Swipe is our habit for July!

Dear FlyLady,

Why not post FlyLady's directions for Swishing and Swiping in that bathroom?

Others may take notice and help or even apply the method to other bathrooms in their lives?

FlyLady here: This is a good idea. I wish we had a cute little poem to post on the wall for all to see. If you get creative just whip one up for us about Swish and Swipe send it to me Fly...@flylady.net with SWISH AND SWIPE in the subject line.

FlyMary from Michigan

I have a really quick question about swishing and swiping. I am trying really hard to work this into my morning schedule because I am a payroll SHE, and it really helps, but I don't think that I have time for it for the same exact reason. To make it quicker, I used your advice and just left the cleanser in a crock beside my toilet. (Top Job)

My question is about just leaving the cleaner there. Is it safe to do that? My bathroom smells clean because of the cleanser, but is it okay to breathe it in as it evaporates? I promise that I am not a hypochondriac or anything... but I'm just curious I guess... I don't want to become one!!!

Thanks lots and lots for all you do!!!!

It takes all of 30 seconds to swish and swipe your bathroom. In fact you don't even need cleaner in your crock to swish the toilet. Just the scrubbing action will keep things from growing in there. I don't use any harsh cleaning products. Any kind of soap will work. I have been using shampoo that I don't like very much in my crock. I put one part shampoo and one part water. It smells good too. You can even use your soap slivers by just putting them in the crock and putting some water over them. The soap will not allow germs to grow in the liquid. I also love anything with a lavender smell. I just use what I have.

Here is the full explanation of Swish and Swipe from our FAQ section on our website.

What does Swish and Swipe mean?

As part of my morning routine I clean my bathroom. Now this is not the crisis cleaning because company is coming and you have not touched the bathroom in months. This is a daily maintenance that keeps it company ready all the time! I know many of you don't think that this needs to be done but I assure you that you deserve to clean and fresh smelling bathroom all the time too.

It doesn't take much time to do this either. This is why I called it a swish and a swipe. Doesn't that sound like a lick and a promise! Quick and easy! Here is how it works and once you establish this habit, your bathroom will never look and smell dirty again.

To accomplish this you need a couple of things to keep in your bathroom. I have my favorite window cleaner in each bathroom just for this purpose along with a Purple Rag. You can use what ever you like just so you don't have to leave the room to swish and swipe. You will have no excuse to get sidetracked if you will do this.

Here is the swipe part. I take the window cleaner and a purple rag and wipe off the mirror and then the counter, faucets and sink. Bam it is just that fast. Now I do this as I am getting dressed and I put my things away. Do you hear me! put your stuff away as you use them this keeps your counter clear and easy to wipe down.

Then I take wad of toilet paper and head toward the toilet. I keep a toilet bowl brush(Rubba Swisha) beside each toilet in our home. They are kept in a crock (one like you put kitchen utensils in) or a vase. I keep an old shampoo or body wash(not bathroom caustic cleaner) in my holder. Soap is soap as far as I am concerned. You could use old bubble bath that you hate or what ever you have.

Now don't do this if you have little children or pets that will get into this.

Each morning take the brush and let the excess cleaner drip off; if it is thick you may have to water down the solution a bit so it will drain well.

Then take the Rubba Swisha and swish it around in the toilet. Even if you don't use any soap; you will keep stuff from growing in there. Then wipe off the back of the toilet with the rag, then the seat with toilet paper, the rim and lastly the sides and floor. If you have little boys you know how they miss. When you do this once a day you will find that your toilet is always fresh as a daisy.

There you have it Swish and Swipe! This takes all of about 1 minute from start to finish but you have to have everything in the bathroom so you have no excuses to not do this.

Now go gather up an old vase for the bathroom and look in the bathroom closet for some shampoo or bubble bath that will work for swishing the toilet. Put your purple rag and Rubba Swisha in your bathroom so you can Swish and Swipe with ease!

Nothing says I LOVE YOU like a Clean toilet when you are sick!

June's Habit: Drink Your Water

#27 I Made It a Game

Dear FlyLady,

My children have been complaining about being tired and not wanting to go outside to play.

I realized they were not drinking much water.

So I came up with a game on our fridge. I drew a game board with a dry erase marker. It goes in a circle with 8 squares & a large start/finish space and ends where it begins.

As we drink a cup of water, we get to move our magnet piece to the next square. The kids are loving it! When they reach the finish line they get a prize. We do tickets in our home as rewards and have a reward cabinet much like chuck e cheese.

So my kids really want as many tickets as possible! Thank you for this months habit! You are not just helping me, but you are encouraging me to help my children too.

The CHAOS Cure! ~FlyLady

This week we are in Zone 4: Your Master Bedroom, Bathroom, and Close.

It did not get dirty in a week and it will not get clean in a week, but you will be making head-way. It is a trend! Get in the habit of decluttering in small segments of time. Decide what time of day you are going to tackle this little job, set a timer for 15 minutes, and just do it.

Friday is our day to clean out our cars and purses! Then please plan something for Date Night!

Declutter your Purse and Car Day/ Date Night

Zone 4 Mission #5 Friday

Dear Friends,

We have reached the end of Zone 4, The Master Bed Room. Now we have covered, under the bed, on top of the bed, the left of the bed and the right of the bed, so what is left? The END of the Bed. See how that worked out? The End of the Bed is the mission for the END of the Bedroom zone! Today you are to check the end of your bed. If you have a bench or chair with stuff piled up or just things piled on the floor at the end of your bed - today is the day to go after it! Please remember that you are NOT to put things that you clear out today in the areas that you cleared off and out this week!

Celebrate Your Independence

Dear Friends,

In the United States of America we celebrate the anniversary of our Independence Day each 4th of July. The other night a young new reporter said that this was the day we won the war for independence. I thought Robert and I were going to scream our heads off at the TV. We just looked at each other in shock.

We were taught in school that July 4th 1776 was the day the 13 colonies declared their independence from Great Britain. The Boston Tea Party was in December 1773; this was the beginning of our quest for this independence. The battles raged on various fronts all across the 13 Free and Independent States until late 1782. I am going to reread one of the best books I have ever read about this time in our history, Killing England: The Brutal Struggle for American Independence.

I woke up this morning to this essay brewing in my head. We all have our own independence days. We don't just wake up one morning and we are free of the stress that is holding us in bondage. We have to declare at least to ourselves that we don't want to live this way another day and set out on our journey to find the peace that we so deserve.

In our perfectionism we just want it to wave our magic wand and have our houses in order, but that is not the real world. We have to go through the struggles to feel the value in what we are doing. This is why it is so important for us to be a part of the independence process! We have to be the one taking charge of our homes.

Let's face it; if someone came in and got rid of all of our clutter we would still be living in CHAOS within just a few days! This is because we had not established the simple habits to keep the clutter from coming back. It takes time and practice to establish these simple habits and string them into routines. The smallest habits help us to win this battle on a daily basis!

Just last night I was talking to a good friend. He was telling me how much having a before bed routine had changed his life. He said that he could no longer go to bed without putting his clothes out for the next day and straightening up his hot spots. I explained to him that I felt that the Before Bed Routine was the most important one of the day! He agreed with me because if he only does his Before Bed Routine his life runs smoothly.

Our routines free us from the bondage of CHAOS! Your Independence Day was the day you decided to join us in our quest for Peace! Every day we have a choice! We can get up and do our routines or we can allow CHAOS to continue to reign in our lives! Every day is a new day! We can jump in right where we are and take the babysteps of our daily habits to celebrate the victory of each day!

Now I am in tears. My sweet darling told me a little proverb. For the want of a nail a horseshoe was lost. For the want of a horseshoe, a horse was lost. For the want of a horse, a horseman was lost. For the want of a horseman the battle was lost and thus the country was lost.

I looked it up and it is a nursery rhyme and it was also quoted by Benjamin Franklin. How appropriate that we come full circle in our thoughts. Since Ben also signed the Declaration of Independence.

"For the want of a nail, the shoe was lost; for the want of a shoe the horse was lost; and for the want of a horse the rider was lost, being overtaken and slain by the enemy, all for the want of care about a horseshoe nail." Benjamin Franklin

So you see even the simplest of habits can make a difference in the way your day progresses. Every habit is a nail to hold your routines together to form the foundation for peace in your life!

You can do this! You have to start someplace! Go shine your sink! That can be your Declaration of Independence!

Why Not a 12 Month Calendar?

Dear FlyLady,

Why make an 18 month calendar if you are buying a new one before you use more than 12 months? Why not make a 12 month from September to September? Plus it is soooo hard to throw away those months you are not going to use.

Thanks for everything you do.

Dear FlyBaby,

We all need a little GRACE in our lives. Our calendar goes for 17 months from August to December of the next year. We need a grace period when it comes to getting a new calendar. The holidays is a tough time to remember to buy a calendar. Those grace months are there to help you; not make it hard for you. They cost you nothing to have them. Use them if you have not reordered your calendar.

I actually keep my calendars. They are not clutter to me. I can see where we were and what we did. I can also see weight fluctuations. This helped me to figure out when I became anemic. Many people write their menus on their calendar because there is plenty of room. Others write down their child's first tooth, step or words. You can also keep funny things your family says in your calendar. It can become your Family History Journal!

Don't allow your perfectionism to bite you once again. This causes us to procrastinate and then before we know it there is no place to write down you family reunion for next year.

Get your calendar now before you get desperate and resort to writing on the wall! LOL Have you been one of our members who has been trying to do without a FlyLady Calendar ? Get your calendar now and stop whining about a free gift with purchase. LOL You get 5 extra months for the price of a 12 month calendar. Now that is a deal!

July's Habit: Swish and Swipe

#4 Today is the Day

Dear FlyLady,

Just had to send you a quick note to let you know what happened today.

After reading about "swish and swipe" for so long, I finally decided today was the day. Just before I left to work, I swiped my sink and swished and swiped the toilet. I thought, "That wasn't so bad. It's not as perfect as it could be -- I mean, I just did a quick swipe -- I didn't even use bleach (I used shampoo) -- but I could get used to this, never having a disgusting toilet to clean ever again..."

Well, wouldn't you know it? When I got home and was about to sit down for a bite to eat, I get a knock on my door. It's my sweetheart of a neighbor, saying he's locked out of his apartment and really needed to use the bathroom. He said he was so embarrassed to be asking, but I just said I was happy to help:)

I was laughing to myself, thinking, what are the odds? The day I finally do a swish and swipe, someone drops in just to use the bathroom! I gotta tell FlyLady about this.

Thanks for the work you do,

Flybaby in Austin

This rest of this week we are in Zone 1: Our front porch, dining room, and entrance.

July's Swish and Swipe Habit

Grab a Seat; It is Q and A Day

Does Your World Revolve Around Fear?

Dear Friends,

Have you been living in CHAOS; Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome? The reason you are afraid to let anyone in your home is because of fear.

  1. Fear of what others will think of you!
  2. Fear of social services!
  3. Fear of not being in control!
  4. Fear of messing up!
  5. Fear of not measuring up!
  6. Fear of not being good enough!
  7. Fear of other finding out your dirty secret!
  8. Fear of letting go of things!
  9. Fear of not having your stuff!
  10. Fear of losing something!
  11. Fear of losing yourself!

There comes a point in our lives that we reach the end of our rope. This is usually when we start searching for anything to get us out of our pit of despair. Something leads you to FlyLady.

The ones of you who can let people into their homes; are born organized, have either followed our system, or you pay someone to come into your home twice a month to clean up after your family. I can't image how much that has to cost these days.

Your first assignment is to go shine your sink! Yet you don't see how this is even going to help. This year we wrote a new book to help you get your home in order. It is a simple book. All you have to do is one babystep each day. CHAOS to Clean in 31 Easy BabySteps has been helping a lot of people.

I'm Confused about Which to Use

Dear FlyLady!

First let me tell you that your program is really life changing! I have a 6 month old baby and was going through some postpartum anxiety and depression, and I was really going crazy with feeling like I couldn't get my house together, and keep it that way. I couldn't even focus and I would waste time doing things but never actually completing anything!

My doula told me about your website and over the last month I am already seeing results! You are a cleaning genius! And I love love love your emails, especially about self care because it's something so many of us forget!

I have ordered some of your products and I'm glad you cleared up my confusion on the products being discontinued! I just received my mop today and I have a question. What do you do with the microfiber mop head that comes with it? I bought the chenille one as well because I watched your video cleaning your floors and liked that you didn't have to sweep before mopping! I did this today and was amazed at how well it worked with the chenille one. But I'm confused why there are two types and how and when to use them?!

Thanks so much for all you do!

Love,

Your New FlyBaby from Texas

Dear FlyBaby from Texas,

I am so happy that you are taking care of yourself. That is the most important thing for you to do after the birth of your new baby. Please take breaks and sleep as much as you can when the baby sleeps.

As for the micro-fiber cloth that comes with the mop head. That was the best there was when we started selling them. It is only a couple of years ago that I started playing with the detailed dust mitt with the micro-fiber fingers that we decided to have some made for our mop. We had discontinued the red dustmop cloth which was impregnated with a wax substance. I wanted to replace that with something that would pick up as well as the red mop cloth.

I never dreamed that it would work better wet and would cut out the step of sweeping before you mop. That was how I was taught. The original blue cloth works well too. I have used it to get up dust bunnies and wash my windows after a storm. Even a purple rag works clipped to our mop. You can use the original blue cloth on your shower walls and doors. One side is smoother than the other side so it is great for windows.

Please keep in mind that anything will work to clean your floor. Make a game of it and put some shaving cream down on the floor and let the kids slip and slide on old towels. Your floor will get clean and the children will have a lot of fun.

July's Habit: Swish and Swipe

#11 A Swish and Swipe Story

Dear FlyLady,

I have a swish and swipe story for you.

Tuesdays are the day I do my weekly home blessing. It's also the day I tell my friends they are free to drop in on me anytime.

A few weeks ago a small group of friends dropped in because one was not feeling well. She had the nausea of a Migraine without the headache. She sat for a minute in my kitchen and I offered her a cold cloth.

Then she headed for the bathroom.

I was so glad I had done my swish and swipe for the morning! All I could think was "nothing says I love you like a clean toilet when you are sick."

Thanks for all you do,

Flybaby Mimi

This week we are in Zone 2: Our Kitchens.

The kitchen is the heart of our home.

Friday is our day to clean out our cars and purses; then plan something for Date Night!

I promise.

Zone 2: Mission #5 Friday

Dear Friends,

Today is our last day in the kitchen and I want you to spend 5 minutes and check on the cleaning supplies and things under your sink? Are there things that you don't use? Are there items you have run out of and need to put on your list?

Now, what is up with your dish rags and sponges? If you need new ones, put them on the list too. Enjoy your weekend!

11 Steps to a Clean Car

Dear Friends,

Paper clutter invades every area of our lives. One of the last places we conquer is the paper clutter in our cars. Sometimes it is so bad that we are too ashamed to let anyone ride with us.

Most of the clutter in our car is from things that we don't think we have time to deal with. You know the trash from the drive-thru, receipts from gas stations, and lots of school papers. As with everything we need a routine.

It all starts with being in a hurry. Imagine that! We rush our lives away. We run late, get in the car and can't wait to get to where we are going. Then we are in another big hurry to get out of the car. That is when we leave everything in there. That is why our cars smell bad.

We try to cover up the smell with deodorizers, but nothing smells better than a clean car. When was the last time you cleaned out your car and gave it a good washing. It was probably before you had to go on a long car ride with your family. How long did it take you?

How can we keep our cars clean?

1. Friday is our day to clean out our cars.

2. Every time you fill up with gas. I like to fill up when I hit a half of tank of gas. I am always vigilant while I am pumping gas. I keep my keys in my hand and my car is locked.

3. After the gas is pumped; I take a minute to grab any trash and throw it away.

4. I take my time and use my purple rag and a rubba sweepa to clean my windshield and mirrors. I drive a truck and it is hard to reach the middle of my windshield.

5. I also keep a rubba scrubba to sweep off my floor mats.

6. Put a Post-It Note on your dashboard to remind you to throw away the trash and clean your car.

7. With your car clean; you can run though the car wash. I did that today when I filled up. You can also do a quick wash at home with MultiWand and a water hose.

8. Keep a trash bag in your car. Then you don't have any excuse to not keep your trash corralled.

9. When you get home; completely empty out your car. Everyone grabs something to take into the house.

10. Take your time getting out of the car. I always attach my keys to my purse and gather up my things.

11. It is OK to make a second trip to the car.

So you see keeping your car clean is easy when you slow down and take your time. When Friday rolls around it is your day to focus on your car. This will keep you safe!

How Big are the Calendar Squares?

Hi,

I was wondering what the inside of the calendar looked like. Is it possible to include that photo on the sale page?

Thanks,

Dawn

Dear Dawn,

We do have a picture at the very bottom of the page. It is a bit catty whompus. Justin has put a penny for scale.

A 17 month calendar from Aug. 2025 to Dec 2026. This is the best wall calendar available to help you keep your family a priority and keep track of their comings and goings. This is a large, spiral bound calendar (Size: 14 by 21 inches when open.) with large squares (Squares 1.88" x 3.2") that make it very easy to see, even from across the room.

There is plenty of room for a big family's many activities and lots of fun stickers! I have taken a picture of my calendar so you can see the inside of it.

July's Habit: Swish and Swipe

#18 I Had Forgotten What It Was Like

Dear FlyLady,

I have to be upfront that I haven't always taken up the challenge of the monthly habit. For one reason, it took about 3 months just to regain the habit of shining my kitchen sink.

Having been nearly flying two years ago, I understand just how quickly I can fall back into my old non-flying ways when stressed and I have been very stressed these past two years taking care of my home and kids as well as elderly parents and working full time. To be perfectly honest, sometimes there are things that are more important to me than the monthly habits.

When I read your the yearly motto in January of 2013 " Words can be KIND or MEAN; the CHOICE is yours in 2013! " it really hit home. You see, the stress of taking care of my Dad and his subsequent death this past April, while not fully coming to grips with the grief from my mother's death a year and a half ago often led me to not speaking kindly to my own children.

So I decided after reading the motto that my year long challenge was to carefully choose my words and tone of voice when speaking to my children. That is my most important daily, monthly and yearly challenge.

Each morning when I put a sticker on my calendar for a shiny kitchen sink, I think back on the day before and whether or not my words were kind or mean. If they were kind, I get to put a star on my calendar and I am pleased to say that now nearly every day has a star on it.

This weekend when I read one of the Swish and Swipe testimonials I thought oh my goodness this Flybaby takes fifteen minutes every morning to clean three bathrooms! No way. I am not doing that. I already have a tight morning schedule. You see, I have three bathrooms too and while I am one of those odd people who really doesn't mind cleaning bathrooms, there is no way I want to clean three every day...especially in the morning.

But then it hit me, I don't have to do it in the morning...I can swish and swipe in the evening! So before I go upstairs to bed, I swish and swipe the downstairs bath. Then I swish and swipe the upstairs hall bath and finally swish and swipe my bath as the last thing I do before getting in bed. The reality of it is that it only takes a couple of minutes per bathroom and when swished and swiped daily, the biggest mess is just a little soap or toothpaste goo on the counter. It really doesn't take 15 minutes!

The absolute best was waking up and going into my bathroom the morning after my first nighttime swish and swipe. I literally stood there and stared for about 15 seconds. It was BEAUTIFUL! At that moment I realized that I had truly blessed my home, my children and myself simply by swishing and swiping all three bathrooms.

After giving myself to everyone else for so long, I had forgotten what it was like to do something for me. At that moment I understood completely what you mean when you say you are blessing your family and yourself. That morning through your words, you were there smiling next to me as were all the other Flybabies out there and the lovely Flybaby who wrote a testimonial explaining that swishing and swiping three bathrooms isn't that big of a deal. Well, really it is.

This week we are in Zone 3: Our Main Bathroom and another Room.

If your bathroom is clean but still cluttered: Start decluttering (makeup, old towels, old medicine, hair supplies, shampoos, etc.). Check out our daily missions.

Zone 3: Mission #5 Friday

Dear Friends,

It is the last day in the bathroom and laundry room! Congrats on working hard all week!

For the bathroom you are to shine your tub and sink! This is not hard, just shine them the same way you shine your kitchen sink. Do not obsess, just scrub, spritz and shine.

For the laundry room, wipe down your washing machine and dryer. It is amazing at how dirty these machines can get and we don't even realize it! No big deal here, just grab a general purpose cleaner and a rag. Spray and wipe. That is it! Do not get sidetracked with this!

What is Standing in Your Way?

Dear Friends,

As a young disorganized mom, I would get all my appliances running. The dishwasher would get filled with dirty dishes, the vacuum was dragged out of the closet, and I would gather up a load of dirty clothes and start the washing machine. Eventually all those helpful appliances would be finish running. Here is what would happen.

We would leave the vacuum in the middle of the floor. The clothes in the washer would not get transferred to the dryer. We would find them the next day and would have to rewash them. Then there are those clean dishes in the dishwasher.

Are they standing in your way of cooking? Are they making your life difficult? I know you are thankful for a dishwasher, but when you have procrastinated putting your clean dishes away, it only hurts you. That wonderful dishwasher is now causing you to pile dishes in your sink. Making your kitchen clean up take longer.

If you will commit to emptying your dishwasher as soon as it finishes then your kitchen will have a dirty dish disposal unit. Now if you don’t have a dishwasher then it is just as important for you to wash, dry, and put away your dishes after each meal. No ifs, ands, or buts; just do it. If one of your children is responsible for this simple job and they are not getting it done; then take that job back and get them to take out the trash.

Clean dishes stand in the way of cooking dinner just like dirty ones do. Do you hear yourself say, I don’t have time to put away the dishes. Then you go do something else. When you hear yourself say, I don’t have time, just set your timer for 2 minutes and see just how many dishes you can put away. I’ll bet you will get most of them put away.

Our procrastination is just the result of the perfectionism that has paralyzed us all of our lives. Look at what happens when you pile on just one more thing that needs to be done before cooking dinner. You give up before you ever get started.

1.   Instead of cooking a wholesome meal; you choose a drive through option.

2.   You pick up the phone and call your local pizza delivery service.

3.   You give up and eat cereal again.

4.   You load everyone in the car and go out to dinner for the second time this week.

I want you to feel good about feeding your family not guilty! It all starts with a menu plan and putting your clean dishes away. Meal planning and cooking is the only way you are going to save real money.

Are you ready to FLY?

What if I Can't Do Laundry Every Day

Dear FlyLady,

I don't have a washer/dryer at home so we go to the laundromat every other week. Is there a way to work doing *something* in every day, since we can't actually do any washing at home? I'm stumped.

FlyBaby Ruth in MA

Dear Ruth,

Yes, there are things you can do everyday to help you with this habit. Everyday as we take off our clothes, sort them into color coded baskets, bags, or just pillow cases. When you have a lot of laundry, you can sort into many types of fabric and colors: Black, red, whites, blue jeans, towels, socks, underwear. You get the picture. Or you could do it by the people in your family. I can't imagine going two weeks to do laundry, but yes I can. I have done it when I didn't have a washer and dryer. I have gone four weeks and have washed my clothes in the bathtub, too because I could not afford to go to the laundry.

I remember as a child my grandmother doing her delicate undies in the bathroom sink and hanging them in the bathroom. When I went to Girl Scout Camp I would wash my white blouse out in the cold shower. Then I would roll it up in a towel to wring out, then it hang up.

Please make sure you have drawers cleared for each person in your family. This will make it easier for you to put the clothes away as soon as you get home. Don't live out of your laundry basket. You could be surprised by the presents your cat might leave for you.

FlyLady

Since my washer is in the basement, I always set my timer to remind me to reboot the laundry.

July's Habit: Swish and Swipe

#25 A Matter of Hygiene

Dear FlyLady,

I got in the habit of swishing and swiping several years ago when it was the habit for the month. Until recently, it's just been a matter of hygiene and something that makes me feel in control.

Then, last January, I came down with some sort of stomach virus that knocked me off my feet one Thursday evening. As I rushed to the bathroom and bent over the toilet, I remember thinking: "Hmm, this toilet smells amazing." Strange thought for sure, but true nonetheless.

Thanks to a great S&S habit, I was able to be sick in relative comfort. And because the toilet was already clean, clean up was a breeze too.

To any readers out there who are doubtful about swishing and swiping, please give it a try. It really doesn't take long at all and is well worth the effort.

Once you've been doing it regularly, you can do it in no time flat.

Thanks FlyLady, for helping us believe in ourselves.

Yours,

Flybaby Nina in NYC

This week we are in Zone 4: Your Master Bedroom, Closet, and Bathroom.

It did not get dirty in a week and it will not get clean in a week, but you will be making head-way. It is a trend! Get in the habit of decluttering in small segments of time. Decide what time of day you are going to tackle this little job, set a timer for 15 minutes, and just do it.

Conquering Mount WashMore

Dear Friends,

Do you feel like you never get finished with the laundry? Is there evidence of the laundry process all over your home? Are there soured towels in the washing machine because you forgot about them? Do you have a dryer full of wrinkled clothes because you were on the phone when the buzzer went off? If you actually folded them are they still on top of your dryer or piled in your laundry basket waiting to be put away?

Laundry is just like dishes. If you eat on plates and drink water out of glasses; you will have dirty dishes. If you get up and get dressed and get ready for bed you will have dirty clothes. Dishes or clothes don't magically get clean, someone has to lift a hand to start the process. Starting the process is just the beginning of five step journey of climbing Mount Washmore!

One day you wake up to no clean underwear. So you either have to go buy some new undies or do the laundry. By this time you have worn every clean item of clothing you have and Mount Washmore seems like Mount Everest. Where do you start?

If your laundry has gotten out of hand there is a good chance that you do not have a routine for staying on top of it! I am going to teach you how to get it done and then give you a routine for keeping up with it.

We are going on a laundry scavenger hunt. Put on some fun music! Go to your laundry room and check the washer and dryer for forgotten clothes. Start sorting those clothes into piles: Whites, delicates, colors, jeans, towels and sheets. Then check your laundry hot spots; the bathroom floor and hamper, treadmill handlebars and the bedroom chair. You know your favorite dumping ground for dirty clothes. Get the children involved too. Ask them to look under their beds and in their closets. Keep sorting the clothing into your piles.

Next gather up all your laundry baskets and put your laundry detergent, softener and stain pre-treater in one basket. Then go to all your closets and gather up all the empty hangers and put them in another basket. You have lots of piles of clothes. Put single loads in garbage bags and take them to your car. You probably have ten or more loads. The next thing you are hunting for in this scavenger hunt is money. Go cushion diving or your change jar to gather up coins for the Laundromat. Now don't fuss that you have a washing machine and a dryer. You have not been using them. It is time to get this done!

Before you leave the house, clean out one drawer for each family member. Most of the clothes in your drawers you do not wear because if you did they would be in the dirty clothes bags. So put them in a give-away bag. This way when you get home from Laundromat you will have a place to put your clean clothes. As you are folding the clothes at the Laundromat don't fold things that you don't love or that does not fit. If it is too stained to give away then put it in the trash. Have a give-away bag handy as you are doing your folding. Don't take anything home that is just going to become a stumbling block to your daily routine of doing the laundry.

A load a day keeps you from having to scale Mount Washmore! Don't wait till you are overwhelmed.

Help! I Don't have a Dryer

Dear FlyLady,

Today I tried old shampoo in the toilet while doing swish & swipe. It was really shining! Great suggestion! I will use old shampoo & bubble bath and then toss those bottles that irritated me.

I have a question for you. Since I have a 23 month old boy and a husband that works in an office, we always have a lot of laundry. I don't have a drier and now that it's winter it's so horrible because clothes don't get dried very easily. I live in a small house and it's very difficult to find a place for wet laundry.

Please, help me! I thank you in advance. Thanks for all you are doing for me.

Love,

Flybaby Betty from Italy

Dear Betty,

People can survive without a dryer. My son’s Grandmother Elizabeth never had a dryer. She used a clothes line outside even in the winter months. When the weather was bad she would hang everything on coat hangers and place them in the doorways.

Actually it is really good for our health to put more moisture into the air of our homes. The dryness of heated air irritates our sinuses.

My son and his wife air dry all their children’s clothes because it keeps them from shrinking. Justin put something similar to this on their laundry room wall. It could go in a bathtub or in a closet if you don’t have a laundry room. A way to get clothing to dry faster is to run a small box fan on them or a ceiling fan.

Check out this Life Hack.

Doing a load of laundry each evening and hanging it up before bed will keep you from having wet laundry hanging all over the house during the day.

I air dry most of my clothes too. I hang them on my shower curtain rod in my bathroom. Some of my clothes need to be ironed so I do it while they are wet and this helps to dry them. If they are not that wrinkled I stretch them on the bias and hang them up. No ironing needed.

You are saving lots of money by not having a dryer. Setting up a routine will keep you from having to dunk under clothes in the door ways all day long. See you are not alone when it comes to not having a dryer.

Sometime we choose to not use one.

August's Habit: A Load of Laundry Daily

#1 Hope this Helps Others

Dear FlyLady,

I'm a long time FlyBaby with years of soaring and years of limping along. My New Year's resolution was to finally solve my constant piles of laundry. No matter how much I decluttered I could never get a handle on the laundry.

I loved the washing, drying, and folding but despised the putting away. Every week we would constantly be searching for things in the baskets to the point they get jumbled. Madness! We are in the process of swapping out 2 rooms in our home so the contents of both were packed up temporarily so we could shift them to the correct space. We used plastic bins and also all of my laundry baskets in the process.

Well the MOST AMAZING thing happened....no laundry baskets equals laundry put away instantly from the dryer. Something clicked with me not having that basket available to dump everything in made it impossible not to immediately put away the clean folded pile. There is no way I will leave it on the floor or on the top of dryer so each load gets put away ASAP.

I'm amazed that removing this simple laundry basket from the process helped me more than years of having and buying more "tools". Even after the room swap is complete I plan to never have baskets available again. Crazy but it works for me.

Hope this helps others who struggle with my same problem.

Thanks for all you do,

Southern Flyer

August's Habit: Do a Load of Laundry Daily

If we can control our laundry by doing one load of laundry per day, laying our clothes out each night and getting dressed each morning becomes a simple habit to practice.

Our habit this month is all about making our lives easier. So, join us in our new habit of doing one load of laundry each day. Check out the great info below.

Friday we are in Zone 1 for one day; Your Entrance, Front Porch, and the Dining Room

Every Friday is our day to clean out our car and purse. Then plan something for Date Night

I promise.

Zone 1: Mission #1 Friday

Dear Friends,

We are going to have a multi room mission today. It might take you longer than 15 minutes to do it, so set your timer for each room and FLY through it!

For the Front Porch, Entrance and Dining Room, put out the fires that are burning in your hot spots. Get rid of the pile of shoes by the front door, get rid of the pile of junk mail and put away the magazines and school papers that are piled on the dining room table.

They are smoldering so get to it!

FlyKid Mission #5 Friday

Hi Kids,

We are taking a walk! Let's walk through our houses looking for 10 things that belong in our rooms and put them away. If you have left any shoes, jackets, school things, toys or books around the house, now is the time to return them to their home. When you leave your things around the house, it makes the house look messy.

Let's grab up the things that belong in our rooms and take them there.I am willing to bet that Mom or Dad will be so surprised and so proud of you!

Free Yourself of Guilt

Dear Friends,

Do you look around your home and see a pile here and a pile there? Piles and piles of paper and stuff? I want to tell you what those piles represent.

1. You said to yourself, "I can deal with that later!"

2. You rebelled and said, "I don't want to look at you now!"

3. You stuffed it in a pile so you could hide it from someone and all you end up doing is hiding it from yourself. Out of site out of mind.

4. Those piles represent decisions that you don't want to make. The Scarlett O'Hara syndrome. Tomorrow is another day.

5. You are scared to throw out the piles because there could be something important in there. So you are chained to your clutter.

After a while you have so many piles that you don't know where to start. All you see are the piles; they become overwhelming and begin to suffocate you. Then you just close your eyes to them and don't see them any more. We become immune to our own clutter.

It is time for this to stop! When you catch yourself saying, I can do this later. Let this be a warning that you are beginning a new pile. Stop yourself right there and say, "It will only take me 2 minutes to open this mail and dispose of the trash!" Then just do it. You know what I always say, "You can do anything for 15-minutes!" There are times that it doesn't even take a minute to dispose of a potential pile of guilt!

Now you want to know how to get rid of those piles you have everywhere. Put a garbage bag in a trashcan and set it by your chair. Also put a box/basket beside your chair. When you are finished going through the stack and sorting out the trash, then you will put these things where they belong. This does not mean that you stop and balance the checkbook or clean out your sewing cabinet. Take it and leave it at least in the room where it should go: If you have to put a box by the door for the drop offs, to keep you from getting sidetracked then do.

This may be necessary until you can find the exact place for things. Start at your front door and work clockwise around your home. Now go pick up one stack about 6-8inches thick and bring it back to your chair. Go through this pile for 15 minutes. I promise when you get on a roll it won't take that long. Just do one small stack and stop and put things away in the box or basket. Set a timer for 15 minutes and go to something else in the house. Then you can go back to the pile and get another stack.

Your home did not get trashed overnight and it is not going to be clean in a day. This is a process: One pile at a time. As you clear out an area, then put a decorative object on the flat surface: Pictures of the family or a favorite tablecloth. This will keep you from piling stuff on the table again.

Practice Hot Spot Fire Drills each Morning and Evening. Put out those fires before they become raging infernos and take over your home. You can do this.

I want you to FLY Free of your piles of guilt!

Less is More

Dear Friends,

One night I was watching ABC News and they did a story about our heavy purses. Check it out for yourself if you missed it.

I thought I would rerun this essay for you. I know your purses are too heavy.

Is your purse so heavy that it hurts your shoulder to wag it? Is your purse dragging you down! As SHEs we tend to feel out of control unless we have all the stuff we might need at our finger tips. When you look into your purse is it a bottomless pit that you are unable to find what you are looking for! Has your purse become a hot spot that is turning into a black hole?

My purse used to be just like yours. The bigger the better! You could say I carried a diaper bag and I didn't have a baby. Why do we do this to ourselves?

As my life has become more organized I don't have to carry as many items with me. Less is more has become my mantra. I carry a wrist-let wallet similar to this. I keep everything I need in this small purse/wallet. It will even hold my phone.

Today is Friday, clean out your purse day; Now go set your timer and clean out your purses!

Less is More!

August's Habit: A Load of Laundry Daily

#8 On the Right Schedule

Dear FlyLady,

If there's one routine that has really gotten itself in place for me, it's laundry. It's on a schedule which makes it easy to get done.

As soon as I get up, on my way to plug in the coffee pot, I carry the day's laundry to the washer and get it going. Within 45 minutes, while I'm doing some Bible meditation, it'll be ready for the dryer, and within an hour ready to be taken out.

If there's no time to fold it then and there, it gets laid out to avoid wrinkles, and right after breakfast it's folded and put away.

What gets done on what day is also on schedule:

Monday: darks;

Tuesday: lights;

Wednesday and/or Thursday, other items as needed;

Friday, sheets and towels because I love to start the weekend with fresh linens on the bed and fluffy towels in that shiny bathroom on Friday night

This is such an ingrained routine in my life, that it's almost dangerous for me to do the wash at any other time of day, since I'm likely to forget that it needs rebooting into the dryer or the folding process.

Blessings.

The kitchen is the heart of our home.

Check out our daily missions in the daily Flight Plan Email!

Dear Friends,

Today is our last day in the kitchen and I want you to spend 5 minutes and check on the cleaning supplies and things under your sink.

Are you ready to FLY with a Clear Car Smile on your Face?

FlyLady

Ask FlyLady

How Do I Keep My Car Clean?

Dear FlyLady,

I have had great success decluttering our home. For some reason I keep procrastinating about cleaning out my car. I still can't seem to gain control over that mess. Clutter is always falling out. Please give me some motivation to get my car clean and keep it that way.

Ashamed of my Vehicle!

Dear Ashamed,

You don't have to feel ashamed another day. We have a basic weekly plan to help you establish a day to clean out your car. Here is an essay I wrote to help us tackle this final frontier. Your perfectionism is why you don't clean out your car. You don't think you have time to do it right.

Don't procrastinate another day!

My car has been clear of clutter on the inside for almost two years.

We have some simple tools for this: Rubba Scrubba. Rubba Scubba sweeps the floor and seats. Our Purple Rags get the windows sparkling.

It's Friday time to Clean Out Your Car Day!

August's Habit: A Load of Laundry Daily

#15 Five Steps Changed My Life

Dear FlyLady,

I have been fluttering for about 5 years now. Some things are in order but other parts of my life/house are still in chaos. I remind myself to take babysteps and whatever I can accomplish is better than nothing. I work a 60 hr week with a schedule that changes each week, so routines can be a challenge for me. But some of the routines are sticking.

One that was a lifesaver for the last month was the laundry routine. Each member of the family has their own laundry basket. Fortunately my oldest DD and DH do their own laundry. But I still do the laundry for the youngest DD and any general household laundry like sheets and towels. We have developed a routine in our home so there is no mount laundry anymore. I do laundry 3 days a week, DD and DH do laundry 2 days a week so everything is under control through the 5 laundry days.

A month ago, I was doing yard work and came in contact with poison sumac. It was a mild case, thank goodness, but each day I got up out of bed, changed the sheets. Each day after the shower, the towels went into the laundry just to make sure I wasn't spreading it. Once that seemed to be under control, my two DD came home from camp with lice. To get it under control, I was daily changing sheets and laundering towels.

The routines I had developed for laundry helped me through what could have been a rough month. Every day I did a load of laundry just like a typical day. I was not panicking because of the poison sumac or lice, because I knew that I could manage because a load a day was not out of the question because I have been doing it for four years now. I can't imagine what would have happened before I started doing laundry the FlyLady way. I probably would have run out of clean sheets and towels and had piles of laundry everywhere.

Thank you.

Flybaby Martha

We are in Zone 3; Your Main Bathroom and Another Room

If your bathroom is clean but still cluttered: Start decluttering (makeup, old towels, old medicine, hair supplies, shampoos, etc.). Check out our daily missions every day in the Flight Plan Email

Friday is our day to clean out our cars and purses; then plan something for Date Night!

I promise.

Zone 3: Mission #5 Friday

Today I want you to grab those old toothbrushes that you have just for cleaning and scrub those sink faucets and tub faucets. It is amazing how gross those faucets can get! Just a little soap and water with the toothbrush will make a huge difference! I know this is on of those missions that makes you groan but it takes less than 5minute to do and those faucets will shine!

For the Guest/Extra Room/Kid Room:

It does not matter if you still have clutter in this room, after this week of missions you have made a dent in it and you now know the BabySteps to use to continue de-cluttering. Today you are going to vacuum the floor. Even if there is only a little bit of floor showing that is fine. Just vacuum what you can.

When we can see we are making progress we are able to stay motivated and not feel defeated.

Remember, Progress not Perfection!

FlyKid Missions #5 Friday

Hi Kids,

Today we are going to play Hide and Seek! We are going to seek out all the stuff that is hiding underneath our beds!

Set a timer for 15 minutes and get to it. Pull one thing out at a time, if you love it and need it, put it away where it belongs. If you don't love or need it put it in a give away bag. If it is trash, put it in the trash can!You do not have do all of it today! Just for 15 minutes!

Remember: Less stuff to clean and put away means more time to play!

Grab a Tool Day

Are You Out of Gas?

Dear Friends,

Did you know that you can actually fill up your car before it hits empty and you are running around on fumes? We don't usually do anything until we HAVE TO!

So you are driving to an appointment, work, or to pick up the children and notice that your fuel gauge is on the big "E" and you don't have time to stop and get gas, because you are already running ten minutes late. Then your car starts sputtering and you run out of gas, in the middle of a busy road.

Look at what this does to you and your family!

1. At this moment, you are under tremendous stress and almost in tears. This is not good for your health.

2. If you are running late for work, your reputation of being tardy has been validated once again.

3. You have to make excuses. No one wants to hear the same tawdry reasons for you being late.

4. Your children are waiting for you to pick them up. This is not good.

5. Your appointment has to be canceled and reschedule, what a waste of the professional's time and yours.

6. Now what about your safety issue? The traffic, and getting gas to get you moving again.

7. You are stranded in the middle of no where. What now!

8. You have to call and inconvenience, your husband or a friend to come and rescue you once again. What about the time they lose in their day, all because you didn't fill up when you needed to.

9. Getting help cost money.

10.Your children are crying and you are at your wits end.

11. Then you start to cry. Are you sick and tired of living this way?

What can you do to stop this from happening ever again?

Most of your life, you have been running on empty.

Empty of mind(no time to think)

Empty of body(You don't take care of yourself by eating good food)

Empty of spirit(you are depressed and feel martyred).

You run until you can no longer keep going. Does this sound familiar? Then you crash and burn, Get sick or literally run out of gas.

You will not believe what I am going to tell you. The answer to this problem is to fix this into your routine. Your Basic Weekly Plan!

1. When you notice the fuel gauge on half a tank, then start looking for moments of time when you are not rushed to fill up.

2. Figure out how often you need to fill up and set a specific time of the week to do just that.

3. I keep a spare twenty dollar bill in my car, so I will always have the cash on hand to fill up when I get a chance. When you use it, you have to replace it, the next time you have cash in hand.

4. Connect filling up with car clean up. Every time you fill up, throw away your trash. Or every time you clean out and wash you car, you fill up. We have a car clean up challenge each Friday

If you will quit letting your fuel gauge steal your time, safety and sanity, you will begin to find a small amount of peace in your life. Think about those little bits of time that you can rescue if you just do a little planning.

I know that this is foreign to us, but we can learn. I was so proud of myself today. I filled up with a quarter of a tank left in my car. Try it sometime. It is so liberating.

Now to the problem of you running on Empty.

Take breaks, Drink your water, plan just a little, do your routines and get dressed to shoes every morning when you get up and go to bed at a decent hour.

I am Flying with a Full Tank! How about you?

Moving Tips

Dear Friends,

Moving is never fun, but it can be made easier if you will not get overwhelmed by the whole process. The very first thing you need to do is read my moving tips. The most important thing you can do is get rid of your clutter. Don't pay good money to move junk!

Moving Tips

Every week we have several members that holler HELP! "We are moving and I don't know where to start. We have to put this house up for sale and it is awful. Please tell me what to do."

"We are moving cross country and I don't know where to start to pack."

"When we move, I don't know how I can unpack and keep the chaos of the move from overwhelming me."

These are some hard questions, but I have a simple answer.

BABY STEPS! YES YOU HEARD ME RIGHT, WE HAVE TO BREAK THE JOB DOWN INTO SMALLER PARTS.

DON'T MOVE ANYTHING YOU DON'T LOVE!

You know how we do Crisis Cleaning: 15 minutes at a time in three different rooms, then take a 15 minute break. This is the most important part. Rest so you won't burn out.

I want you to think about the hardest room in your home to pack up and also the easiest. For most people the hardest room will be the kitchen or the storage room/basement. Then the easiest will be the bathroom. Split your time up between these two rooms so that the worst room does not get you down and when you change to the room that is easy, you will have a sense of accomplishment.

1. Get your favorite drink as well as a bottle of water. So you will not get dehydrated.

2. Set your timer for 15 minutes and get started doing 15 minutes in your toughest room.

3. The first thing to do is get rid of all the trash; Bag it up and get it out of the house.

4. Then get rid of everything that can be given away to friends or charities. This the hardest part.

5. Next you have to get all of those bags out of this room right this minute.

6. Do not let the trash or give aways pile up.

7. Pick a place to stage them until the truck arrives to accept your give away items.

NOW FOR THE PACKED BOXES

1. Now pick a staging area for your boxes that will be going to your new home;

2. Get the boxes out of the rooms where they were packed.

3. Don't mark every box with the word STUFF and More STUFF.

4 Color code your rooms and mark your boxes as you pack them. Number them too.

5. Last boxes packed will be the items you need first. Label them START UP. Load on truck last.

6. Unload Kitchen stuff first. The kitchen is the heart of the home.

Now be sure and read my moving tips. This is all detailed and our members have given us some great tips for getting settled. There is also a section in my book Sink Reflections if you have it.

Keep in mind that once you have the necessities unpacked and placed in the proper rooms, the rest can be unpacked 5 boxes at a time. You did not get it packed up in a day and you are not going to be settled in to your new home over night. BabySteps will get you there. Besides if you were not ruthless with your decluttering while you were packing, then you can take the time to find the right place for your stuff in your new home. If for some strange reason, it does not have a home, then you may need to rethink your decision to hold on to this item. The box you packed it in can also be the box that gets taken to your new charity thrift shop. Get to know these people well!

Now as you are packing up the old house, you need to keep one area clear, just for sanity of your family. You still need to eat and rest. So you will need a clear dining table and comfortable chairs in the family room to relax in. Make it a priority and you will have a place to sit when your timer goes off.

Please do not crash and burn! Now is not the time to get sick, so pace yourself! This is a direct order. If you will take BabySteps, before you know it, you will be settled into your new home and all of this moving will be just a dream.

Now for those of you that are not moving to a new home, you can make your current home feel like a new one if you will pretend that you are moving and join in with our decluttering. It is all of your clutter that makes your home feel small and cramped. It is also this clutter that makes you feel overwhelmed and depressed. Release this clutter and you will find that your home will become new and joyous place to live. Peace is just a declutter away! Try it.

If your home is declutter and you are not planning on moving, then you can join us in spirit by asking yourself the important questions: Do you love it, Do you have a place for it and Does it make you smile? There is always some decluttering to do. Please utilize Habitat for Humanity for your donations. Your abundance can help build a new home for a deserving family.

Moving is always hard, but when you take it in BabySteps, it will not kill you!

Are you ready to FLY through your next move?

August's Habit: A Load of Laundry Daily

#16 My Control Journal My Control Journal

Dear FlyLady,

I always had a problem with laundry but one day I had a Ah ha moment. I bought some of the fold up kind of baskets they don't take up as much floor space. I have one for whites and one for colored clothes. Okay, that solved the sorting problem.

That was not enough. I thought and thought and then another Ah ha moment. I started washing different laundry on different days.

Here comes another item to my control journal my laundry days.

Monday - sheets and towels put back on bed and in bathroom

Tuesday - my DH clothes folded and put away.

Wednesday - clothes that need to be bleached folded and put away.

Thursday - my clothes some need to be hung to dry the others put away.

This made it so much easier not as many clothes to deal with at one time and I never leave the laundry room without them being folded or hung on hangers. This way they can be put away as soon as I get in the bedroom.

The funniest thing about it is my DH even knows what day everything is done on. He has even shared this with all of his friends because their wives seem to have the same problems with this chore. You never know what men talk about when they are together. HA HA This worked really well for me.

Now I don't need to worry if my DH wants us to go off for the weekend. We can even leave on Friday nights if we want to. This makes my life so much easier.

I just want to thank FlyLady and everyone else for all of the ideas that can make our lives more productive.

Grab a Seat for Q & A Day

From Supersized to Downsized

Dear Friends,

We have been living a supersized lifestyle for a very long time. We have homes with lots of closets, big garages and spacious basements. We even drive big cars that bring home more stuff. To make room for more precious things those SUVs have to haul the old unloved stuff to storage units. Our supersized lifestyle needs a supersized paycheck to fund our supersized debt.

As the kids grow up and have lives of their own; all their stuff that you have saved is just waiting for them to come and get it. You think you are holding their stuff hostage so you can see them occasionally, but if the truth be known they don’t want it. So now my question is, why have we held on to things that have no value for our children.

If we don’t downsize our supersized lifestyles, our children will be forced to do it for us after we are gone. We can’t leave them with that burden like our parents did to us. We can’t use our parent’s excuse of living through the great depression. We have the ability to let go of our clutter once and for all time.

I have a fun way to do this. We are going to pretend to move into a new house half the size of the one we are in now. Now don’t panic! You are not all your stuff! In fact all that stuff has been keeping you from having fun. You have spent years organizing it! Now it is time to release your clutter to new homes so that you can find yours.

When you think about moving do not get overwhelmed. We have a systematic way of deciding what we can’t live without. Get out your Give Away, Put Away and Throw Away boxes. Set your timer and just ask a few questions of the clutter. Pick up one item and make a decision.

Have I used you in the last year?

Do I have a place for you in my new home?

Do you make me smile?

Do you have any bad memories for me?

Do I have two of you?

Each week focus on a new room. Spend 15 minutes each day downsizing one little area. Don’t look at the big picture. It has taken years to accumulate all your baggage. The process of moving only the things you love and use will make your current house feel like a brand new home.

Then when it comes time to retire to your cabin on the lake, you will be ready to load the truck. Packing will be a breeze!

The Clothes Monster is Growing

Dear FlyLady,

I have so much clutter I don't know what to do. My daughter and her three kids live with my husband and I. While we love their company, they bring added clutter to our already cluttered place. What can I do to get control over the clothes? I feel I am washing clothes every day and getting nowhere. I need a flight plan! I am not an organized person and have spent my life wishing I was. Your swish and swipe plan was great for me and my bathroom smells wonderful at last. Thanks for the tip! Please enlighten me on how to get control of this problems. Note: she has lots of shoes and clothes; short of throwing them away what other options do I have.

Surround by Clothes in Alabama

Dear Surrounded by Clothes,

Laundry and clothing are a big part of our clutter. Our August Habit is laundry, but we don't have to stop now. We practice doing a load a day!

I want you to sit down with your daughter and babies and have a family meeting. Keep in mind that this is your home and you all have to figure out how live together in peace and harmony in a clutter free environment. It is your home and your grandchildren, but doing their laundry should not be your responsibility. You are welcome to help her, but she needs you set some rules.

Three children have lots of clothes that do not fit. This is why there is so much laundry. Clothing that doesn't fit gets tossed into the dirty clothes basket. The first thing you and your daughter need to do is clear out one drawer for each member of the family. This will make putting things away much easier.

Then, you are going to have to figure out what fits each child. Children don't need tons of clothing. A fun way to decide what to keep and what to give away is to have a fashion show. Since I don't know how old each child is, this could be easier with older children. Put on some model runway music and show them how to prance around the floor showing off their cute clothes. This is also a good idea to put together outfits for school!

Next is establishing a routine for laundry. Once you declutter the clothing, laundry will be more efficient because unwanted clothing will be out of the pile. Laundry has five parts: Sort, wash, dry, fold, and PUT AWAY! The Sort step and the Put Away Step are responsible for making your home look messy!

When clothing is piled on chairs, dressers and thrown in the floor, our rooms look like clothes basket blew up. Eventually, the clean clothes and dirty clothes get all mixed up and your laundry has doubled.

Here is a quick solution! Gather up all the clothes and sort them into wash piles. Bag them up in trash bags or pillow cases. Then, take them to a Laundromat and get them all done at once. Stagger them in the washers and dryers so they don't all get done at once. Take plenty of baskets and hangers so you can fold and put them in each person's basket. Have one bag for give-away clothes. Place them in the bag as you are folding! Then, drop them off as you head home. As soon as you get in the door, put all the clothes away.

Once you have decluttered, the clothes that are too small or too large and you only have clothes that you wear, you can establish that routine of one load a day. That is start to finish. Some members put a in load as part of their before bed routine and then as part of their morning routine, they place it in the dryer.

I hope this helps. Just remember to take BabySteps! A load a day keeps the Laundry Monster away.

August's Habit: A Load of Laundry Daily

#22 I Remember the Date

Dear FlyLady,

I'm so excited to be writing this testimonial! I've struggled with laundry my entire adult life! In fact, I haven't had all of my laundry DONE (as in washed, folded, and put away) since 2005! YES! I remember the date! I moved out of my parents house and I have been buried under Mt.Washmore ever since! I've been fluttering since 2008 and laundry never really caught on. Until now, as a newly wed, I've realized, my laundry + his laundry = we had no place to live for all the laundry!

So, we took it in baby steps, washing, folding, and putting away 1-2 loads per day, every day! He teases me and says, "A load a day keeps chaos away!" as I frequently pester him to give me the clothes off his back, before he's even done wearing them for the day. I'm so ready to do my load for the day and keep the chaos away! LOL.

I've cleaned off so many piles and put out so many clothing hot spots (HEY! Look! There's a CHAIR under there!) and found so many clothes that I didn't even remember buying! I donated so much, I filled an entire blue goodwill drop box with our unloved clothing and shoes! We did a 27-fling boogie a day until we could actually WALK in our WALK-IN closet.

What a great feeling! It's still far from done, but we're not going to let our perfectionism take hold; we're so grateful for the space we've found. It is very inspiring to keep going with our baby steps!

The funniest moment about living without Mt. Washmore was the day my husband came out of the bathroom, after taking a shower and announces, "You de-cluttered away my shelf!" I looked at him puzzled, then he proceeded to explain, "The laundry basket by the sink used to be so full and overflowing, that I could use it as a shelf to put my clean clothes and towels on top of it while I showered, but now that all the dirty clothes are gone, there's just a big empty space" LOL This means, our bathroom was so littered with dirty laundry that he had no place to put his clean laundry, except for on top of dirty laundry! When we de-cluttered all the excess laundry from the bathroom, he had to learn to hang his clean clothes and towels on the clothes hooks while he showered! LOL. What a crazy idea!!!

We're so happy to be living with a little less chaos every day!

With so much love, One very happy new fly-couple!

We are in Zone 4; Your Master Bedroom, Bathroom, and Closet.

It did not get dirty in a week and it will not get clean in a week, but you will be making head-way. It is a trend! Get in the habit of decluttering in small segments of time. Decide what time of day you are going to tackle this little job, set a timer for 15 minutes, and just do it.

Friday is our day to clean out our purse and car; then plan something for Date Night!

I promise.
