What's Wrong with Now

Dear Friends,

Why is it that we always need a starting point to begin to change our lives? You know how it is; On Monday I will start a new diet, quit smoking, start exercising or become a FLY Baby. Some of us wait till January 1st to begin a life change. If it is such a good idea then why do we need to wait for some other time to begin???

What is wrong with the Do it Now Principle? DING! I have preached for years that you are not behind and you can jump in anytime. Some days I have been known to start over in the middle of the afternoon.

Here is what I do:

Let's say for some reason I am having trouble getting my day started and it is 2:00 pm.

1. I go look at my bed and if it is not made, I make it. There are days when I have to jump up and get the phone that seems to start me off on the wrong foot. So I just pretend to be getting out of bed for the first time.

2. Then I pick out some more clothes to put on. Because what I am wearing isn't energizing me. I must have gotten dressed fast or I still have on my pajamas.

3. Then I go get into the bathtub. A good soak helps me to focus again.

4. Then I get out of tub and get dressed. As I am dressing, I swish and swipe the bathroom. (wipe down the counter, put things away and swish the toilet bowl with a Rubba Swisha)

5. I put on my lace up shoes then I get out my Control Journal and start down my list to see what I have left out. Most of the time I have forgotten to eat all day and drink my water. So I make sure I eat something and get out my  water bottle.

6. At this point, I use my timer, because my home has probably gotten more than 15 minutes worth of messy and it is time to attack my hotspots.

7. I work for 15 minutes and then I rest for 15 minutes. After about an hour of this my home is back in shape and I am feeling better about me.

So do you see just how easy it is to start over with your day! You don't have to beat yourself up or go hide under the covers: All you have to do is start your Morning Routine over again. Don't look at it as if you are behind! Just jump in and get started.

Are you ready to Jump in and get started today?

Two Swish and Swipe Questions

FlyLady here:

I got a couple of questions this morning so I found a good explanation for you.

Dear FlyLady,

Why not post FlyLady's directions for Swishing and Swiping in that bathroom? Others may take notice and help or even apply the method to other bathrooms in their lives?

FlyMary from Michigan

Dear FlyLady,

I have a really quick question about swishing and swiping. I am trying really hard to work this into my morning schedule because I am a payroll SHE, and it really helps, but I don't think that I have time for it for the same exact reason. To make it quicker, I used your advice and just left the cleanser in a crock beside my toilet. (Top Job - cheap antibacterial cleanser)

My question is about just leaving the cleaner there. Is it safe to do that? My bathroom smells clean because of the cleanser, but is it okay to breathe it in as it evaporates? I promise that I am not a hypochondriac or anything... but I'm just curious I guess... I don't want to become one!!!

Thanks lots and lots for all you do!!!!

FlyBaby J.

Dear FlyBabies,

It takes all of 30 seconds to swish and swipe your bathroom. If you have little kids who would get into the liquid then I don't recommend keeping your Rubba Swisha in a crock filled with old shampoo or all purpose cleaner. I actually would not use a cleaner or caustic toilet cleaner in my bathroom I hate the smell of chemicals.

As for posting the directions for Swish and Swipe for the world to see. It is a cute idea but don't be upset if you are still the only one who does it. Now don't be a martyr about this. You can show your children how easy it is. Cleaning the bathroom was one of my jobs growing up. I wish I had known about Swish and Swipe back then.

In fact you don't even need cleaner in your crock to swish the toilet. Just the scrubbing action will keep things from growing in there. I don't use any harsh cleaning products. Any kind of soap will work. I have been using shampoo that I don't like very much in my crock. I put one part shampoo and one part water. It smells good too. You can even use your soap slivers by just putting them in the crock and putting some water over them. The soap will not allow germs to grow in the liquid.

Here is the full explanation of Swish and Swipe from our FAQ section

on our website.

What does Swish and Swipe mean?

As part of my morning routine I clean my bathroom. Now this is not the crisis cleaning because company is coming and you have not touched the bathroom in months. This is a daily maintenance that keeps it company ready all the time! I know many of you don't think that this needs to be done but I assure you that you deserve to clean and fresh smelling bathroom all the time too.

It don't take much time to do this either. This is why I called it a swish and a swipe. Doesn't that sound like a lick and a promise! Quick and easy! Here is how it works and once you establish this habit, your bathroom will never look and smell dirty again.

To accomplish this you need a couple of things to keep in your bathroom. I have my favorite window cleaner in each bathroom just for this purpose along with a roll of paper towels or purple rags. You can use what ever you like just so you don't have to leave the room to swish and swipe. You will have no excuse to get sidetracked if you will do this.

Here is the swipe part. I take the window cleaner and a rag and wipe off the mirror and then the counter, faucets and sink. Bam it is just that fast. Now I do this as I am getting dressed and I put my things away. Do you hear me! put your stuff away as you use them this keeps your counter clear and easy to wipe down.

Then I take that same paper towel or purple rag and head toward the toilet. I keep a toilet bowl brush beside each toilet in our home. They are kept in a crock (one like you put kitchen utensils in). I keep a mixture of old shampoo and water in it. You could use old body wash or bubble bath that you hate. Soap is soap as far as I am concerned.

We have a great Rubba Swisha to help you keep your toilet clean.

Each morning take the brush and let the excess shampoo solution drip off; if it is thick you may have to water down the solution a bit so it will drain well. Then take the Rubba Swisha and swish it around in the toilet.

Even if you don't use any soap; you will keep stuff from growing in there. Then wipe off the back of the toilet with the used paper towel or rag, then the seat, the rim and lastly the sides and floor. If you have little boys you know how they miss. Then toss the rag in the laundry or the paper towel in the trash. When you do this once a day you will find that your toilet is always fresh as a daisy.

There you have it Swish and Swipe! This takes all of about 1 minute

from start to finish but you have to have everything in the bathroom

so you have no excuses to not do this.

Now go gather up some window cleaner for the bathroom and look in the

bathroom closet for some shampoo that will work for swishing the toilet.

Nothing says I LOVE YOU like a Clean toilet when you are sick!

June's Habit: Drink Your Water

#3 New Guideline for Drinking Water

Dear FlyLady,

I have been flying on and off for years and also was a SHE who was initially transformed through the card system!

I have a new guideline for drinking waterr: I take a gulp or two at every stoplight, when I am in my car. It has been helping me to feel better and I noticed that my eyes (usually) aren't bloodshot anymore.

A friend of mine, who is a nurse, told me that when you are dehydrated, it goes all the way down to the cellular level; every cell in your body is thirsty! I still don't drink enough water, and I am glad that it's our new habit for the month.

A big hug to you dear FlyLady and Leanne (you taught me so much about cooking, spices, planning!

I like to pretend I am hosting a cooking show when I am cooking - it's that fun!...and I didn't learn until I was forty years old.)

I am very, very thankful for each one of you.

I can help you get a jumpstart with my book,

The CHAOS Cure! ~FlyLady

This week we are in Zone 1: Your Front Porch, Entrance, and Dining Room!

This week our Zone is very important to our homes. The entrance to our homes make the first impression on our guests, our family and ourselves. When we walk into a clean and tidy home our whole attitude will be uplifted. This puts a smile of pride on our faces. We have gone so long, looking at such a terrible mess, that we have been ashamed to answer the door. I want you to get rid of guilt that accompanies clutter and CHAOS. To do this you have to get off your franny and start to declutter this area.

Your task is to declutter this area. Spend 15 minutes a day this week doing something, anything, in these rooms. They did not get dirty in a week and they will not get clean in a week, but you will be making headway. It is a trend! Get in the habit of decluttering in small segments of time. Decide what time of day you are going to tackle this little job, set a timer for 15 minutes, and just do it.

Tuesday is our day to Plan and Play!

On Tuesdays, We take some time out to Plan our week. Planning means taking time to look at next week and see what we can do to make things easier for us during the next week. Here are some things we can do to plan:

  • Menu planning
  • Activities planning
  • Date Night and Family Fun Time planning
  • Wardrobe planning
  • Checking prescriptions to see what needs to be refilled
  • And anything else you might need to plan. There are tons of things we can do to save ourselves time later!

We also get to have lots of fun on Tuesdays. This is where the play part comes from. When our planning is finished, we get to go play! Spend the rest of the day doing something fun just for you. See that movie you've been wanting to see, take a long bath with a good book, or get out and have some fun at the gym. Whatever makes you happy! This is all about you.

"See what you can do this week to make next week easier!" ~FlyLady

Zone 1: Mission #2 Tuesday

Dear Friends,

We are in Zone 1 this week, that is the Front Porch, the Entrance area and the Dining Room.

Today you are to sweep your front porch area around your front door. Shake out your welcome mats and wipe down your front door. This makes a huge difference in how your home looks. We have a tendency to neglect this area and yet it is the first thing that people see when they come to your home.

FlyKid Mission #2 Tuesday

Hi Kids!

Today we are going to go into our rooms and gather up things that don't belong. Things like, water bottles, cups, glasses, snack wrappers (you know all those things that you are not supposed to have in there!) Let's set a timer for 5 minutes and get to it.

Throw away what needs to be tossed and return the things to the other rooms in the house where they belong. Have you "borrowed" anything like scissors or glue that needs to be returned? Make today a put away kind of day.

Ready? Set? GO!

We have a Student Control Journal for you, it's FREE.

Five Star Review

The FlyLady is Such a Good Motivator! I Don't Cringe When People Pull Up Unannounced. I am Happy!

I highly recommended this book for any type family or single person no matter what age you or your children are. I was a fly baby for a short time years ago and recently, I found you on fb about 6 months ago. I ordered the book and have really enjoyed the revival in my heart and my house.

AMAZON

I used to cringe in agony when I would see people pull up in the driveway now I don’t. Just like Marla says the husband has started organizing and getting rid of his stuff too. The teenage boys are a work in progress. I loved the tips on , the delicate cycle, storing sheets under the bed( I’ll Have more room in my linen closet and that’s major when you are limited on closet space like us) .

The FlyLady is such a good motivator! I have found my self quoting her and singing the songs. Earlier I was cleaning and was upset about something having water spots and Marla popped in my head and said “that’s your protectionism “ and I moved on.! I so wish I would have stuck with The Flylady years ago when the kids where younger but, so glad to have her now.

Don't Get in Our Way

Dear Friends,

Our homes, yards, desks and cars are just a symptoms of what goes on in our head. I want to help you stop the stinking thinking that has you living in not only Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome but can't have anyone ride in your car, walk in your yard or find anything on your desk syndrome.

When we are so overwhelmed we do nothing. Things continue to pile up and the CHAOS just gets worse. As the piles literally get higher the effects of the procrastination cause an avalanche and the walls come tumbling down around us.

Everyone who joins us says where do I start and what do I do! We tell them to go shine their sink but they can't seem to get their hands and feet moving toward the kitchen because in their head they don't think that shining their sink is going to make a dent in the cleanup of the avalanche; so they continue to do nothing but get our emails and complain that how can they be expected to read and do all of those reminders. After a few days they unsubscribe all because the avalanche wasn't really in the house it is in their head. Please just think of the emails as yellow sticky notes all over your house. You just want the mess cleaned up and you think that everything will be better. The mess is just the result of thoughts that are ricocheting through your mind and scattered sidetrack way we attack anything that we have to do.

Just this morning I got an email from a lady who received a letter from her city requesting that she get her yard cleaned up because the weeds were five feet tall and tools were everywhere. All summer her focus had been on making a lovely garden with roses and perennials. "Don't get in our way when we want to play!" She has planned and played but her efforts were not done as a project but a full out obsession and as a result she had not done her routines in her home or her yard. The grass and weeds had gotten so high in the back that her dog could not go in the back yard.

Now look at what has happened because she did not do her homework first before going out to play. She has paths in her home because of the piles of stuff on her hot spots and paths in her yard so the dog can go out and do his business. She has not picked up after herself and left tools to rust and all the project trash everywhere. Now she has set herself up to feel like a failure. This is all because she just wanted to do was go out and play.

First things first! And I know this is so hard for us because all we really want to do is go out and play! I will never forget when we were planning a remodel of our home. I had my routines in place for two years and I was scared to death that my routines were going to go away. I had refused to do the remodel when we first got married because I felt that even as chaotic as our home was at the time that I would become so overwhelmed by the remodel that I would loose my sweet darling in the process. It was not until I felt that I could keep the house in order through the construction that I would even consider it.

Big projects like this are hard on you anyway and when we throw our routines out the door because all we want to do is play; the project takes on a life of its own and before we know it we are living in the worst chaos ever. All because we wanted to play and we didn't think first and pick up after ourselves during the process.

I learned a lot from watching our carpenters, day in and day out. They had a get started routine to their day, a quitting routine and a time to stop work and cleanup. At 3:30 every afternoon they would start cleaning up the debris from the day's work. They would throw away the trash, put away the tools and sweep up or vacuum up the saw dust. They didn't wait till the job was finished. They didn't say, "Well I have to use that tomorrow; I'll just leave that right where it is so I can get to it easily."

They actually picked up after themselves and made their work area a safe place. Even with this it was still hard to live and work in this situation.

I had one rule; our bedroom had to stay clean and shiny. I didn't have a kitchen sink; so our bathroom sink became the focus of my routines. I did my routines every single day and I had to get dressed to shoes because of the construction. My bed was made and I felt good about the only room in our home that was not being dismantled by the crew. It was only toward the end of the remodel project while we were on vacation that they put down the hardwood floor in our bedroom. I was blessed to have a responsible crew doing our remodel. I learned a lot from them.

We get so excited about a new project that we are chomping at the bit to do it. In our enthusiasm we jump in with both feet and but on blinders when it comes to anything that may try to pull us away from what we really want; All we really want is to PLAY!

So how can we keep our homes and our yard from interfering in our playtime? I can make this very simple for you! Do your routine in the morning before you can go out and play! Set up a routine for your play and determine when you are going to stop playing and adhere to the time you set and then include clean up time and put away time in the process. This goes for not only yard work but scrapbooking, reading, sewing projects, art projects with the children and homeschooling.

We are so good at getting everything out that all we see is an on going project. If our husbands left a carburetor on the kitchen table for weeks on end; we would pitch a hissy fit. We need to see our creative projects in the same light as we would our husband's car project. Our biggest problem is that we don't pick up after ourselves and we just want to go play all the time. Play time is reward time. Get the homework out of the way, so you can have fun playing instead of having the avalanche of procrastination pile guilt on top of you!

You can do this if you will establish your routines one babystep at a time! Do you have a Control Journal to help guide you through this process? Each time you hear yourself say, "I don't have time!" Just do 2 minutes. This will bring peace into your life.

What's Best for Laminate Floors

Dear Sweet FlyLady,

What nifty FlyLady gadgets are best for laminate floors when it comes to:

A. Dry mop

B. Damp mop

C. Sweep up like a fir needles (Pacific Northwest has an abundance of beautiful evergreens), a spilled plant, or broken glass.

Thanks for all of your great tips, loving kindness, and encouragements,

Dear Michele,

I have wood floors, they are pretty tough. What I know about Laminate floors is that you have to follow manufacturers instructions. The research I have done says not to use water on them. It also recommends a special cleaner that the manufacturer of the floors makes.

Our Mop Pack is just right for dust mopping and for applying the special cleaner.

Our Rubba Sweepa can get up those pesky pine needles. It is part of our Big Bundle Pack.

June's Habit: Drink Your Water

#10 This Habit Just Clicked

Dear FlyLady,

I hate drinking water. It doesn't TASTE like anything and therefore it is uninteresting, boring and very unsatisfying.

I accepted the water drinking challenge last year, but I grumbled and inwardly complained. A lot. Because water is boring. I understood everything you wrote about the benefits to the body by drinking more water, but I lost interest even in adding ice to try to make it more refreshing. It wasn't. I bought a few of your wonderful water bottles, I love them!!

But drinking plain old boring water lost it's fun even in my awesome new bottles. So I started making herbal teas and drank that, iced, from my water bottles. Lavender tea, jasmine tea, passion tea, hibiscus tea, peppermint tea. All cold/iced. All unsweetened. Now THAT was refreshing!! So that's what I drank all last summer and I stopped grumbling so much.

When it got cooler outside, though, my cold tea drinking dwindled and eventually sputtered out. Just after Christmas I had this really big craving for fruit. That happens to me a lot in the wintertime, I think because I just enjoy fresh fruit and I miss it when its not in season. I was cruising through Facebook one day and one of my friends re-posted something about fruit infused water. What an ingenious idea!! LOL Just add fruit to water, let it chill in a pitcher in the fridge and just keep adding water!

I know you have written and posted about that before but for some reason it never stuck in my brain. I guess I had to be in that frame of mind at that moment in time for it to click. So for the past few months, that's exactly what I have been doing. I bought a couple bags of frozen fruit at the grocery store and now I always have a pitcher of water in my fridge with some kind of fruit or flavoring added. I have a peppermint plant (its the only plant I've managed to keep alive LOL) and I strip off a few leaves, bruise them (to release the flavor) and add that to the pitcher.

I have made "fill up the pitcher" part of my bedtime routine so that after I'm finished with my morning coffee I always have my cool, refreshing water to drink the rest of the day the next day. I've gone from FORCING myself to drink two bottles of water a day to ENJOYING drinking two (or more!!) gallons of water in a day. Just by adding fun fruits and flavors. I still make the cold tea (passion tea with fresh lemon slices is amazing!!) but I find myself reaching for the water more often than not. It's quick, it's easy, it's already prepared.

Thanks for caring about all of us the way you do! And thanks for having such awesome products! A recent inventory of my cupboards shows my friends and family have "abducted" a couple of my bottles. I don't mind at all! Guess it's time to restock! LOL

Have an amazing day!!

This week we are in Zone 2: Your Kitchen; the Heart of your Home.

Focus on one little part — reclaim your kitchen sink. Empty everything out of your sink, shine it up, fill it with hot soapy water, and start washing dishes, one at a time.

  • Do a 27-Fling "Trash" Boogie. Trash is clutter. When the bag is full, take it outside, right away, to the trash bin.
  • Clear out your mail hotspot. Get rid of the old magazines, catalogs, and advertisements.
  • Clear the clutter off your counters one at a time.
  • Clear the clutter off your kitchen table.
  • Take a peek at your pantry. Don't pull everything out and start reorganizing; just take a look, see what you need, and start a grocery list.

If your kitchen is clean but still cluttered: start decluttering. Check out our daily missions. FlyLady usually sends out one during the week which concentrates on decluttering one small area of your kitchen.

Zone 2: Mission #2 Tuesday

Dear Friends,

Every once in awhile I get an email from a member with a mission suggestion. I received this one and thought it was great! So here is your mission from a member for the kitchen today:I was in the kitchen the other day putting away the silverware and noticed how gross the silverware holder had become!

Also, the area around the holder was filled with little bits of nothing, lastics, paperclips, ketchup packets! A total mess, in other words. I had the thought that it would be great to have a mission for this as I'm sure there are plenty of flybabies just like me who don't think about it!

FlyKid Mission #2 Tuesday

Today we are going to do something that might be hard but that is okay. You can do this! You are going to go look in your rooms for 11 toys that are either broken or missing pieces that need to be thrown away. Get a trash bag and toss them!

Keep on the Sunny Side

Dear Friends,

In the middle of night, I wrote something down again. This is becoming a habit, too. When I got up this morning I found the note in the bathroom. It is almost like I get a gift each morning. I could not wait to see what is going to come from it.

The words I wrote down were: Keep on the sunny side of the street. I looked it up on Google and, lo and behold, it is the words to a Frank Sinatra song. I can't remember ever hearing it and I don't know the tune, but the words have other meanings, too.

One evening I walked down the main street of our little town. The sun was setting; one side of the street was in shadows and the other in bright sunshine. When I got up this morning and saw these words, I remembered this picture.

In the sun we are bathed in warmth and love, while the shadows make us feel cool or maybe even cold. Then I got to thinking about what we do to ourselves. It is our choice to walk on the sunny side or we can drudge along in the shadows and hide from ourselves and our feelings.

I don't know about you, but I am tired of hiding! When I began to FLY, I started to come out of the shadows and into the light of love. This is the love that I have for myself. Every day that love glows brighter. When I take care of my body, I am taking care of my spirit too. My being needs a comfortable place to live and be loved. My body is the sacred place that is me. I am not going to eat food that is poison to my body!

All of this love didn't happen overnight. It took lots of babysteps and to tell the truth, I take a new one each day. With each little step I FLY higher and love myself more.

There are other things that put us on the sunny side of the street.

Saying positive things instead of whining

Getting enough sleep

Eating meals and drink your water

Taking breaks instead of pushing to exhaustion

Giving your children hugs and not harsh words

Limit your volunteering

Let go of your perfectionism

Please and thank you are better than nags

Let go of your martyred attitude

Don't pile on to your duties

Take BabySteps

Use your routines to guide you through your day

Plan for tomorrow instead of putting out fires

Go to the doctor and dentist for check ups

Most of all be kind to yourself and others

If you are doing these things, you will be walking on the sunny side of the street. When are you going to step out of those dark looming shadows into the light of your own love! It doesn't take much, any one of these babysteps will set you on the right path if you will just step out of the shadows in faith and start to FLY!

Are you ready to join me in the warmth of the sunshine of your love?

Family Fun Digging in the Dirt

Dear Friends,

Lets get our family involved in starting a little garden. I know you have some pots hiding in the garage. All you need is a little patch of dirt.

I'll bet many of you don't know that I used to be a farmer. I loved the smell of tilled earth. Our farm was in the flat land of the Mississippi River flood plain in Kentucky Bend. After my step-father died, I ran a 1500 acre farm.

We can grow plants from seeds or from little plants that you can buy at the hardware store. You can buy a bundle of onion sets for very little money. All you really need to know is that the root end goes down. This can be a fun way grow some food for your family and make a few memories. Some of my favorite things to eat from the garden is radishes, green onions, and mustard greens or lettuce.

Today I am going to take some potatoes that have sprouted eyes and plant them in a pot on my front porch. Tiny new potatoes are so good in a mess of fresh green beans. I have two white potatoes and a few red ones. These will taste so good in a couple of months. Sweet potatoes are easy to grow too.

Cooking with herbs is a wonderful way to add flavor to your meals. I have one little seedling of basil that I am going to add to one of my front porch pots and then sprinkle seeds in the pot for a few more plants to transplant to other pots in a few weeks.

One of the things to remember about growing herbs it to pinch the top out of them to keep them from going to seed. This also keeps the plants from getting leggy. When you pinch the top out of a plant it helps to make more branches.

Squash is an easy plant to grow too. The more you pick the fruit of a squash; the more squash it will give you. We all love tomatoes (except my Sweet Darling). My favorite variety of tomato is a Roma. It is an oval tomato what is great for making sauces and salads. It is not a huge plant. Children love to plant and eat little grape tomatoes or Tommy toes ( small cherry tomatoes).

Strawberry plants grow quickly and produce fruit that children can pick. Put the plants in a strawberry pot or in a raised bed. They will make runners( more plants) and the plants will live for several years.

Go buy some seeds today! Don't forget to get some sunflower seeds and marigold seeds. The birds love sunflower seeds. Marigolds are great companion plants for any garden. They help to keep bugs away.

Have fun today! Enjoy digging in the dirt. You will reap the fruits of your labor in no time.

June's Habit: Drink Your Water

#17 A Lifestyle Change

Dear FlyLady,

I love the taste of water but I feel it tastes so much better in our water bottles because the ice keeps the water so refreshing.

I have searched for several recipes for non-cola drinks because I am weaning myself off of sugary drinks. The recipes I have found that I have really enjoyed are the ones that have you add fresh fruits to a gallon of water to get that hint of the fruit. Slices of lime, or strawberries, or blueberries, etc really elevate the water with no additives or sugar.

Since we are working on a lifestyle change I thought this was such a positive way to encourage us to drink more water.

Thank you for all you do! The genuine love you show us. The reminders throughout the day are our GOD Breezes and I just love you for blessing us.

The CHAOS Cure! ~FlyLady

This week we are in Zone 3: Your Main Bathroom and Another Room.

This week we are focusing on the main bathroom and one extra room. The extra room may be a second, or third bathroom, a guest bedroom, a child's bedroom, the office, or maybe the laundry room. Just pick one extra room and focus on it this week.

The bathroom: Do you live in fear that someone will actually see your bathroom? It is too easy to close our eyes to the mess that is hiding right behind the bathroom door. This week, we are going to open that door to the bathroom, and BabyStep, by BabyStep, we are going to conquer the CHAOS that is the main bathroom!

Your bathroom should give you sense of relaxation and joy when you enter. This is a place for you to pamper and take care of yourself. Treat the room with love and respect and it will bless you with comfort and peace.

Remove the obvious clutter, take out the dirty laundry, and empty the garbage can.

If your bathroom is clean but still cluttered: Start decluttering (makeup, old towels, old medicine, hair supplies, shampoos, etc.). Check out our daily missions. FlyLady usually sends out one during the week which concentrates on decluttering one small area of your bathroom.

Zone 3: Mission #2 Tuesday

Dear Friends:

Today we are going to shine our tubs or showers! We have talked about shinning our sinks since you started and we want you take 5 or 10 minutes to shine that tub or shower. Do not get obsessed with the tub being perfect. You can do this mission while you are in the shower, just scrub the tub with whatever works. Anything is better than nothing, then spritz it with a little windex and dry it with a towel like you shine your sink.

On to the guest bedroom! Today we are going to tackle the bed and get it company ready. If you need to tackle this 15 or 10 minutes at a time that is fine, don't burn out. Now, if the bed is already clean ask yourself "how long has it been since the sheets have been washed?"

Babysteps, set your timer for 15 minutes!

FlyKid Mission #2 Tuesday

Hi Kids,

Today we are going to go into our rooms and gather up things that don't belong. Things like, water bottles, cups, glasses, snack wrappers (you know all those things that you are not supposed to have in there!) Let's set a timer for 5 minutes and get to it.

Throw away what needs to be tossed and return the things to the other rooms in the house where they belong. Have you "borrowed" anything like scissors or glue that needs to be returned? Make today a put away kind of day.

Ready? Set? GO!

Recipe for a Stress Free Celebration

Dear Friends,

All of us are required from time to time to host a party: Birthday, Graduation, Showers, Weddings, Anniversary, 4th of July cookout, Thanksgiving or any other holiday dinner. Unless you have declared your home off limits to your family and friends: that way no one even bothers to ask you. Then there are times that your family just descends upon you without even giving you a chance to say no. Are you tired of hiding from your family behind your locked front door? Wouldn't you just love to be able to volunteer your home without the pain and suffering that goes along with getting ready for a party? Well we can help you with this. It is quite simple.

What is the first thing you think of when you realize that the party is going to be at your home? OH MY! How will I ever get our home clean enough to have guests! Your next thought could be how can we afford to feed 30 people or what in the world am I going to cook. OK it is time to stop your mind from racing and sit down and put your feet up while you take 15 minutes to gather your thoughts and put a plan into action.

Ingredients for a stress free celebration.

Plan

Clean

Shop

Cook

Decorate

Take care of you!

Follow these directions for your Easy Party!

Nothing is ever going to get done if you run screaming through your home without a focus. Get dressed all the way to shoes and fix your hair and face right now if you have not done this yet today. Now grab a piece of paper or set up a section in your control journal for this. This is something that you can keep in your control journal for the next time you have a party. We have had people take our holiday cruising missions and adapt them for any special occasion. We are just going to go over the basics here.

The first thing you do is write down the day that the event will happen and figure how many days/weeks you have to prepare. This will determine just how fast you need to get your franny in gear.

Let say for example that you have two week; this is what we have in the US to get ready for our 4th of July celebration.

Under the section CLEAN:

Put what rooms need the most attention. Are you having overnight guests that need the bed that is somewhere in the middle of that junk room you call a guest bedroom. Do you have hot spots raging all through the house? How is your entrance and your front porch? How about your back yard or deck? How is your bathroom and guest bathroom; Towels and bed linens, napkins and tablecloths?

Note the link to Crisis Cleaning 101 on our website.

Crisis Cleaning Podcast.

Print this out for your control journal so you will have it.

Use the Crisis Cleaning to tackle the worst part of your home. Do not skip the last 15minutes of each hour. It is most important that you take care of you or you will not be a very calm hostess. Remember we are just planning now. Don't jump up and start cleaning yet. There will be time. We can do anything for 15 minutes.

Next let's start a shopping list. But first you need to decide how much you can spend without it hurting your budget. Don't forget that it is OK to have a pot luck to keep expenses down and allow everyone to feel like they are a part of the celebration.

We put together a great 4th of July Cookout Menu for you. We have included the FlyCrew's favorite recipes.

Make your menus and Grocery list; If you have overnight guests you will need to plan for breakfasts, lunch and snacks. Put these items on your list too. When you are planning your menus; include dishes that you can make ahead and keep in the refrigerator so you are not stuck in the kitchen when your guests are arriving. A little planning now makes for a calm hostess. Most everything can be put together a day or two before and kept in the refrigerator or freezer. Don't forget about using your crock pot to keep your home from getting too hot during the summer heat spells. Don't forget your favorite beverages! Bags of ice, homemade ice cream, ice cream salt, ice chests or tubs to hold the drinks. OH and the charcoal or propane if you need it.

Decorations: Do you need paper plates, cups, napkins, tablecloths or flowers for your porch, deck or centerpieces? How about party favors for the children; Citronella candles to keep the bugs away or torches. Envision your party and what do you see? Write it down. Do you need more lawn chairs or tables? Ask people to bring their own if you need to.

Taking Care of you: What are you wearing? Do you need a haircut? Anything else you can think of! Make an appointment now.

Now that you have a plan and we are all good at making plans; it is time to implement these plans.

Here is the key to making this all work. Get the house out of the way first, so you are not cleaning 5 minutes before your guests arrive. I want you resting with your feet up when that doorbell rings. This will relieve most of your worries. Use Crisis Cleaning to get the worst of it. You will be amazed at what you can get done in 15 minute segments if you will just get up and do it instead of playing the martyr role. Then maintain it with your small babystep routines. You are going to feel awful if you run around screaming at your whole family to help you the night before. If you get it picked up and then practice picking up after yourself(we are the worst) all day long it will not get back in the shape it was in. It is much easier to maintain then it is to Crisis Clean with 12 hours to go. Do not put off cleaning till the last minute. Do you understand this???

Next Go Shopping, buy all you can early so you will not have to run to the grocery the day of the celebration. Then the week of the celebration pick up the fresh produce that you will need.

Three days ahead start your food preparations. Corn can be wrapped in foil for grilling, Veggies can be cut for salads, salads can be made, baked beans can be put together ready to pop in the oven or crockpot.

Hamburgers can be made and frozen. Desserts can be made ahead too. I have one rule for cooking ahead of time. Only prepare one dish at a time and have a sink full of hot soapy water ready for clean up. After you have finished preparing the dish; clean up after yourself and take a break and check things off your list. Also start with a clean kitchen. It is never fun to cook in a dirty kitchen.

The day of the party all you will have left to do is pretty up yourself, decorate the house with the items you already have and get stuff out! Don't forget to ask for help from your family and your guests. If you are not running around with your head cut off then you will be able to give kind orders. Remember you are the hostess with the most-est because you are FLYing!!! Strut your stuff baby and show them just how easy it is to have a party without all the stress.

Now it is time to have fun! One last warning. Don't forget the rolls. It has become a family tradition for one of us to always forget the rolls. Laugh and enjoy yourself. You deserve it because you are so good!!

Sit Back and Enjoy the Fireworks!

Ask FlyLady

I Need Help

Dear FlyLady,

I am having difficulty wrapping my head around some things. I am certain you have answered this question many times, but I cannot find the answer. How does one keep up with the weekly zone plus the daily missions? I can find time for the daily missions, home blessing, and morning and evening routines, but I cannot seem to fit in the decluttering plus the weekly zones. I work full time, and I have flying for about a month.

Thanks for all that you do.

Kimberly

Dear Kimberly,

You are thinking too hard about all of this! If you are doing the missions then you are already working in our weekly zone. Don't obsess about doing everything perfectly. Even when you do FlyLady incorrectly it is still better than doing nothing.

As for the decluttering; it is important! The more you declutter the easier it is going to be do your routines. All we ask is to spend 15 minutes decluttering each day! If you don't have 15 minutes then just do something; it is better than doing nothing. Here is a list of things you can do for two minutes. Set a timer!

  1. Clear off a hotspot
  2. Open a drawer and declutter 5 items.
  3. Pick 5 pieces of clothing that no longer fits.
  4. Toss 5 magazines into recycle bin
  5. Throw away 5 pieces of paper.
  6. Open a junk drawer and eliminate 5 items.
  7. Give away 5 books you have read
  8. Recycle some plastic bowls! Whip Topping and Butter bowls
  9. Get rid of 5 cooking gadgets that you don't use
  10. Recycle 5 catalogs
  11. Get rid of 5 pieces of junk mail.

So you can see decluttering can be fast and furious! Set an alarm on your phone to remind you to spend just 2 minutes. You will be surprised at how those hotspots will start going away!

You can do it! If there is anything you are giving it away; get it to the car so you can donate tomorrow.

June's Habit: Drink Your Water

#24 Extra FlyLady Encouragement

Dear FlyLady,

I'm so thrilled to see June's habit! This is something I've been working since the beginning of the year, and have been doing so much better already. A little extra FlyLady encouragement can only help!

So here's how I manage to get enough water throughout the day, that may help some of my fellow dehydrated FlyBabies: I have a full BIG glass (or at LEAST half of a certain very fabulous FlyLady stainless water bottle, haha) with every meal. Those are the easy ones, because of course we gotta eat!

Getting the rest has always been tough, but I found a perfect solution (for me anyway). I set two recurring daily alarms on my phone that say "Water!" -- one at 11am and one at 3pm (of course this should be adjusted to fit your own schedule) -- and when that alarm goes off, I stop whatever I'm doing and drink. A LOT.

Remembering to sip a little here and there throughout the entire day has never been something I could do, but having those alarms to remind me and getting a whole chunk of my daily requirement has made all the difference in the world! It's amazing how much better we feel and function when we give our body what it needs. Such a simple thing...

Thanks so much for your daily encouragement!

This week we are in Zone 4: Your Master Bedroom, Bathroom, and Close.

This week we are working on Zone 4: The Master Bedroom. It also includes any bathroom you may have off the master bedroom, and whatever lurks in the bedroom closet. This will be an ongoing process. You may or may not get the entire room cleaned this week. That is not the objective. Any thing you do in this room now will be an improvement over the way it was last week. Next month you will focus on it again.

Your bedroom should be the cleanest room in your home. Many of you still use yours as a garbage/clutter disposal for the rest of the house. If your bedroom is clean and clutter free, then it becomes an inviting haven for building your relationship with your spouse. The best gift you can give your children is a strong marriage. This is true whether your children are 2 or 40 years old.

Your task is to declutter this area. Spend 15 minutes a day this week doing something, anything, in the master bedroom. It did not get dirty in a week and it will not get clean in a week, but you will be making head-way. It is a trend! Get in the habit of decluttering in small segments of time. Decide what time of day you are going to tackle this little job, set a timer for 15 minutes, and just do it.

Make Your Home a Vacation Get-Away

Dear Friends,

What is it about going on vacation that makes it worth all the preparation and hassle? Is it getting away from the phone? I don't think so; most of us have our personal cell phones. Is it getting to seeing new places? Maybe but many of us usually want to go back to old familiar areas. Is it the food? It could be, or is the fact that cooking is not hard in an efficient clean kitchen.

How about the people? They are usually the same ones you have at home. So what is it about being in a different place with the same people? Could it be that the surroundings do not choke you!

Hotel rooms are sparse: Two beds, a desk, one bathroom, a night table, one small closet, a little dining table and maybe a little refrigerator. Hey I am leaving the Television and video games out. Ignore them. Let's say you rent a condo at the beach. It has a small kitchen, two to three bedrooms, a living area, a balcony, a couple of bathrooms and empty closets. The same thing for a house at the lake or a cabin in the woods; they have all the conveniences of home without ALL YOUR CLUTTER!!!

Oh it's not clutter, it is your stuff, I can hear you yelling at me. Well your stuff makes you feel like you need to leave home to breathe. So what does that tell you? Your stuff is killing you. You are uneasy in your own home. Another word for uneasy is disease. Get it?? Your house has become a storage unit for your stuff, not a home.

This is why it feels so good to walk into a sparsely decorated room. The space frees you to breathe without you feeling closed in.

How do we get this vacation feeling in our cluttered homes? By evicting Clutter and Just-in-Case forever! These things have chased you away from your home. They have taken over your residence. They are squatters and it is time to take back your home and make it your sanctuary instead of a storage unit.

Start by Crisis Cleaning: we are attacking the surface clutter that is residing in our favorite hotspots. Spend 15 minutes in the Kitchen, then 15 in the living room and then 15 in the bathroom. Then you get to rest for 15 minutes. Don't skip this step! It is the most important one.

I promise those few minutes are going to make a difference if you will get up and do it, instead of whining that 15 minutes is not enough time. The clutter will be out of sight and you will start to say to yourself that this doesn't look half bad; even if the floors are dirty. Clutter is what makes your home look awful.

Oh you still don't believe me; then do an experiment. Clear off your coffee table. I mean move everything off into a box and just stand back and look at it. How do you feel? The clean and clear is contagious. Now go put away, give away or throw away everything that is in that box.

You deserve to have a home that gives you a beautiful clean feeling. You can get that vacation get-away by taking babysteps to eliminate your clutter. Set your timer and allow that beautiful clean to put a smile on your face!

That beautiful clean is waiting for you!

FlyLady's Heart Attack Baked Beans

Now these baked beans are not the most fat-free beans you will ever eat. They are almost like eating candy they taste that good. Here is how you do it. I really don't have a recipe; I kind of throw them together.

Two pounds of bacon; Take the whole package and cut it up raw by slicing it up and put in a big cast iron dutch oven or big pan. Cook until brown. On medium to high heat.

Dice up two big onions. Put them in the bacon grease and cook them until semi-clear.

Drain off most of the bacon grease. Add 3/4 cup of brown sugar too the grease left in the pan. Simmer just until the sugar dissolves.

Squirt in about 1 cup of ketchup and about 2 Tablespoons of Yellow Mustard and a splash of worchester sauce.

This is the sauce for your baked beans. Now add the pork and beans. I use a big can (53 oz) or 5 or 6 regular cans of pork and beans. (pour off the soupy part in the can)

For a different type of baked beans you can add several cans of different kind of beans (white beans, kidney beans, red beans, lima beans: I use what ever I have) or prepare a 1 pound bag of "15 bean" soup beans according to package directions. You will need to cook them before you make the bean sauce.

Now for cooking them. I have put them in a crock pot on low for 8 hours, I have let them cook on the stove top on low(stirring often to keep them from sticking) for an hour or so. Then there is stirring all the ingredients together in the dutch oven without the pre-cooking and putting the cast iron dutch oven(with the lid on it) in the oven at 200 over night.

I have tried all the variations of these beans as a last resort; all because of my SHEness. I would not have any pork and beans. They have always turned out well and were the hit of every 4 of July celebration pot luck I have ever taken them to.

FlyLady's Potato Salad

Enough to feed an army. serves 15

8 pounds Red Potatoes I use about 8 pounds of medium sized potatoes. Boil whole till tender and the skins on. Then run cold water over them for about 5 minutes. Pour of the water and let them stand and dry. The skins will come right off. Cut them up into quarters or the size you like them.

Boil about 8 eggs. Do not overcook. I hate green eggs. LOL Put eggs in cold water, bring to a boil and boil 5 minute and put the lid on and let stand for 30 minutes. Put cold water over the eggs to cool. Peel them. Cut them up into pieces.

Add about 2 cups of mayo or the amount you like. This makes a lot of potato salad.

Add 2 table spoons of yellow prepared mustard.

1/2 to 1 cup of dill pickle relish

1 small onion chopped finely.

1 teaspoon of sugar if you like.

This makes a huge bowl of potato salad.

Macaroni Salad

This recipe originated over 10 years ago from the back of a mayonnaise jar. I was in search of a recipe for Macaroni Salad and Potato Salad that did not have sweet pickles in it. I came across this one and have adapted it to fit our family. We love this and hope you enjoy it also! ( I now make this with reduced fat Mayo and it tastes just as good, have not been able to take it to the fat free level!)

* 1 Cup Mayonnaise

* 2 Tbs white vinegar

* 1 Tbs mustard

* 1 Tsp sugar

* 1 Tsp salt

* 1/4 Tsp black pepper

* 8 Ounces cooked Elbow Macaroni ****

* 1 Cup chopped celery

* 1 Cup chopped peppers (I like to use red and green bell peppers for color)

* 1/4 Cup Chopped onion (I prefer Vidalia - a sweet onion)

Combine first 6 ingredients, mix well. Add Macaroni and stir, then add veggies and mix well to coat. Chill and serve. Enjoy!

**** When I first made this I used a box of Macaroni and could not understand why the dressing that I prepared did not seem to coat the macaroni well, it was as though there was not enough. LOL! I found out why, most boxes of Macaroni are sold in one pound boxes not 8 ounce size boxes. I had made a whole pound and not 8 ounces! So when making this I either use half of a one pound box or I just use the whole box and double the rest of the ingredients. Just remember a pound of elbow macaroni when cooked is a lot! I use the 8 ounce version when just making it for the immediate family at home. When I am having a gathering or taking this to a pot luck I use the full box and double the ingredients.

Note: Yes, I know, this recipe is actually for summer, but it is sooooo yummy, that you may want to surprise your family with a summer treat in the middle of winter. And of course, if you live in Australia or New Zealand, this recipe is just right for this time of year!

FlyLady's Melon Ball Salad

1 seedless watermelon

1 cantelope

1 honey dew melow

1 pint of blue berries

1 pint of small strawberries

1 small can of orange juice undiluted

1 lemon squeezed and seeds removed

Cut the water melon long ways to use as a serving dish. Take a metal spoon and scoop it smooth on the inside. You can make /\/\/\/\/\ zig zag cuts around the top rim to make it pretty. Take a melon baller and scoop out the melons one ball at a time. This takes a while put you can pace yourself. Pour the juice in a bowl to add to the orange juice and lemon juice.

Put it all together in a huge bowl or I used a turkey roaster last week to put it together. Pour orange juice and other juices back over the fruit. It is good made a couple of days a head of time.

BlueBerry Pound Cake

A few years ago I came across this recipe in a cooking magazine, the first time I made it I liked it but did not love it. I kept trying to decide what was the problem, I re-made it again changing some things and then I loved it and so did the rest of my family. I am constantly asked for the recipe whenever I serve this or take it some where. It is easy to make and very transportable.

* 2 Cups Granulated Sugar

* 1/3 Cup softened butter

* 1/2 Cup (4 ounces) Light Cream Cheese ( this is half of a block of an 8 ounce package)

* 3 Large Eggs

* 1 Large Egg White

* 1 Tablespoon Pure Vanilla Extract (imitation tastes imitation and in this cake you can tell)

* 2 Cups Fresh or Frozen Blueberries

* 2 Tablespoons All Purpose Flour

* 3 Cups All Purpose Flour

* 1 Teaspoon baking powder

* 1/2 Teaspoon baking soda

* 1/2 Teaspoon salt

* 1 8 ounce container of Vanilla Yogurt ( it is hard to find 8 ounce containers of yogurt sometimes - I buy a large container and measure 1 cup, which is 8 ounces)

* Cooking Spray w/flour (such as baker's secret)

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Beat sugar, butter and cram cheese until well blended (4 to 5 minutes). Add eggs and egg white (when adding eggs to most any recipe you should add them one at a time, beating very well after each one).

Add in vanilla extract. In a separate bowl add the blueberries and the 2 Tablespoon of Flour and lightly toss them to coat the blueberries. In another bowl combine the 3 Cups of Flour and the baking powder, baking soda and salt, stir well to mix. By spoonfuls add flour and then yogurt alternately. Blend well with mixer. Add blueberries and lightly stir by hand to fold in the blueberries to the batter.

Pour the batter into an angel food pan (10 inch) or Bundt pan coated with cooking spray (my personal choice is the spray with flour but regular cooking spray can be used). When baking with these types of pans it is wise to tap the pan on the counter top lightly to get rid of any air bubbles in the batter.

Bake at 350 for an hour and fifteen minutes. Ovens vary so around an hour or so check the cake with a wooden toothpick or cake tester, insert the pick into the center of the cake - when it comes out clean the cake is done.

Let cool in pan for 10 minutes on a rack (raised off of the counter top or stove). Flip cake over onto cooling rack to continue to cool (if using an angel food tube pan - remove sides of pan and let cool an additional 10 minutes and then remove bottom).

My family likes to eat this plain but you can use a simple glaze of 1/2 cup powdered sugar and 4 teaspoons water and drizzle over warm cake. This is incredible warm or cold. Hope you enjoy!

July's Habit: Swish and Swipe

#1 My Bathroom Always Smells Pretty

Dear FlyLady,

I haven't been Fluttering very long- sputtering it feels like most days!

I'm a full time student, I work part time, I work in the lab at school, I'm applying to grad schools and I have my very first solo apartment. I'm redoing my BabySteps again and I'm on day 8 now.

But one thing I've done, fairly consistently since I joined FlyLady has been the Swish and Swipe. I love to escape by taking bubble baths and used to have to scrub out the tub every time I wanted to take one.

But for months now, I've done a swish and swipe every morning. I can take a bubble bath whenever I want. My bathroom always smells pretty and it's one room I can retreat to.

In my half bath (some how, my one bedroom apartment has one and a half baths) I have a hand soap in a pretty pump bottle. It smells lovely, but it is so drying it chaps my hands. I use a squirt of that to Swish in there and don't have to worry about my kitty getting into it.

The rest of my home is quickly catching up.

I can help you get a jumpstart with my book,

The CHAOS Cure! ~FlyLady

This rest of this week we are in Zone 1: Our front porch, dining room, and entrance.

Tuesday is our day to Plan and then Play!

Zone 1 Mission #1 Tuesday

Dear Friends,

We are in Zone 1 this week, that is the Front Porch, the Entrance area and the Dining Room.

Today you are to sweep your front porch area around your front door. Shake out your welcome mats and wipe down your front door. This makes a huge difference in how your home looks. We have a tendency to neglect this area and yet it is the first thing that people see when they come to your home.

FlyKid Mission #2 Tuesday

Hi Kids,

We are going to go into our rooms and get all of the clothes that are on the floor and put away what is clean and put the dirty clothes in the hamper or basket.

Here is the rule for today: Do Not Put Clean Clothes In The Dirty Clothes Basket!

See when I was little I used to try this trick!! This makes more work for your parents! Put away the clean clothes and only put the dirty ones in the basket.

Your room will automatically look cleaner and neater when there are no clothes laying around to clutter up the space.

Ready? Set! Go!

Jump Start Your Day

Dear Friends,

Today's Morning Musing is about consistency! As FlyBabies we have never stuck with anything for long. We have a tendency to go full steam ahead and then do too much too fast; then we crash and burn! After that we let the guilt eat away at any self-esteem we have left. This has got to stop!

Just because you miss one day does not mean you have lost! Our motto is we are never behind and we can jump in right where we are! We start fresh each day and don't look back and beat ourselves up with the what-ifs of life! Now we deal with What-Is!

We all have 15 minutes! You may not think you do, because you are stuck in your whiny attitude of stinking thinking. The truth is, if you choose, you can do anything you desire! All it takes if 15 minutes!

Our routines have been built with babystep consistency! One small habit at a time! We didn't overwhelm ourselves by trying to do a full blown routine right off the bat! If you are struggling with your routines then you may have cut off more than you can chew at one time.

Write down on paper 3 things to do in the morning and 3 in the evening. Once these become a habit, you can easily add a couple more of those babysteps. As you build your full routine, it becomes easier each day. We sometimes need to check our written down list to make sure we have not left anything out, but as you go through the motions, the movement and flow to your day become part of you! This is how my Morning Musing has become part of my routine. As soon as I get finished with my morning routine. I have found that if I don't do it first thing in the morning as part of this routine; it doesn't get done! Do I beat myself up over this, NO! I start fresh each morning and practice my dance steps to my day!

Now on the first day of the rest of your life. Don't look back! Build your routines one habit at a time. Dance through your day!

Are you ready to FLY with me?

Do You Have a Swish and Swipe for Tubs

Dear FlyLady,

I really liked your email about cleaning the shower door. My question is : what about bathtubs ? I don't have a shower at home but a bathtub that I can use as a shower, so no door but a simple curtain that I wash every week. I have been doing swish & swipe for several weeks now and I am very satisfied with the result (I also dry my kitchen sink regularly and I love it !), the bathroom gets dirty less easily.

However, I have been wondering how I could apply this principle to the bathtub which still get dirty quickly. I don't see myself drying the whole thing with a towel (which would need to be big !) after each shower, or is it the solution ? Do you have any tips to keep a bathtub shiny?

Thank you for everything

Baguette, flying in France

Dear Baguette,

I don't know why you are washing your shower curtain each week. It could be that it is not drying well because it is pushed back. Mold grows is still damp places. I was taught many years ago how to keep mold from growing in a dank room. Get a small fan and let it move the air around. This will keep the mold from growing.

I have a cloth curtain and it dries nicely when I pull it shut for a couple of hours. I have to remember to push it back to allow the shower to dry. In the winter time we need a little more moisture in the air. FlyLady Kathy uses our FlyLady Mop Head with the handle shortened to clean her shower once a week. She scrubs it and then dries it with another  microfiber cloth.

I like to scrub the tub and shower while I am in there every day. I just use a little of the same soap I use on my body to clean it. After all it is that soap and shampoo that makes the film on the walls. I also keep a rubba scrubba in my tub to clean the jets. They get a little dirty. I do one every day. It takes no time at all.

The secret to keeping a tub or shower clean is to do just a little every time you are in it.

We have tools that help us keep our bathrooms clean.

July's Habit: Swish and Swipe

#8 A Long Way to Go

Dear FlyLady,

I just had to say thanks.

I've only been flying for about 10 days and I have a long way to go before I master the routines, but I jumped in with the morning routine and especially the swish and swipe.

I'm so glad I did too.

Just two days ago my 5 year old came down with a terrible stomach bug and she spent plenty of close up time with the "throne" and I was so thankful that I had chosen to jump in and fly with you.

I didn't have to think about how clean it was when that awful moment struck.

Thank you for helping me create these new habits that bless my family!

This week we are in Zone 2: Our Kitchens.

The kitchen is the heart of our home.

Every once in awhile I get an email from a member with a mission suggestion. I received this one and thought it was great! So here is your mission from a member for the kitchen today:I was in the kitchen the other day putting away the silverware and noticed how gross the silverware holder had become!

Also, the area around the holder was filled with little bits of nothing..elastics, paperclips, ketchup packets! A total mess, in other words. I had the thought that it would be great to have a mission for this as I'm sure there are plenty of flybabies just like me who don't think about it!

Today we are going to do something that might be hard but that is okay. You can do this! You are going to go look in your rooms for 11 toys that are either broken or missing pieces that need to be thrown away. Get a trash bag and toss them!

One Bite at a Time

Dear Friends,

It is so much easier to clean in a room without clutter. Don’t get overwhelmed by all the clutter; 15 minutes a day over what you do in your routines. I know you don’t think this is going to work, but I promise that those 15 minutes of concentrated decluttering every day will make a difference in your home and your attitude. It is the consistency of eating the elephant one bite at a time that will slowly make the whole elephant disappear.

I have a story to tell you about my Sweet Darling. He is the king of the one bite rule. Several years ago he had a British Sports car; an MG. In fact the car was always being worked on. After a minor car accident the MG was totaled. So he bought a second car the same model for parts. He is pretty good at fixing anything. It took both cars to keep just one running. He was left with only the stripped down parts car. Over an entire summer, he systematically cut that car(with a hack saw) into dinner plate sized parts and sent it to the landfill one plate at a time. It was his goal to do something to dismantle this car each day. At the end of the summer he was finished. It was almost therapy for my sweetie: the car had betrayed him. That car was a pain and he got rid of it one bite at a time. Beware of the anger of a patient man.

The reason I mentioned this story, is because in our impatience to see our homes clean, we over-do. Then we get overwhelmed and we QUIT. I want you to do a little every day and not crash and burn: BabySteps, 15 minutes of decluttering and consistency will be the keys to your clean home and your peace.

If you are not being consistent with your routines, even small ones, then you are not going to have your goal of a clean and peaceful home. This hit and miss attitude is what got your home in a mess to start with. You clean like a banshee for two days because of guests, and then when they leave, you let things go to pot because you are worn to a frazzle.

This has got to stop; I want you to enjoy your home, your family and your guests. You can’t do this if you are exhausted. I want your pledge to stop, “crisis cleaning”. That you will commit to doing your routines DAILY, and that you will spend 15 minutes decluttering each day.

I am not the drill sergeant that many of you think I am. I don’t spend all day cleaning. Even when I was decluttering I only did 15 minutes a day. I used the 27 Fling Boogie to declutter our home. It was almost as if I didn’t clean at all. After three months of decluttering every day and doing my routines, our home became a paradise, instead of the pig sty that is was. Every morning and walk into a clean and shining home and it is still a big shock and a GO ME moment for me. I would walk into my clean kitchen and just smile. Some of you know what I am talking about. It is a pleasure to not be greeted by mystery water and yesterday’s dirty dishes and feel like you are behind before you even make your coffee.

I want you to smile when you walk into your kitchen each morning. Visualize your clean and peaceful home. Let go of your perfectionism and impatience and take babysteps. You can do this; if you will just eat this elephant one bite at a time.

Ask FlyLady

No Power, No Problem

Dear Friends,

Why do we let unexpected problems with weather, electricity, and other little things, throw our routines in the trash? We are still going though horrible issues. Please don't sit back and think this could never happen to YOU! It is important to be ready!

I can tell you, it is not a perfect world. One little thing out of whack throws a monkey wrench into our plan. In the northern hemispheres, we are getting ready for Summer. With these seasons, come thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, flooding and power outages. Are you prepared with plan B?

Let's pretend for a minute (some of you will not have to pretend at all) You have lived it. O.K. your power goes out and you have no electricity, no hot water, no stove but the family is still running in and out of the house. After the power comes back on, your home is trashed. WHY?

You have not been cooking, washing dishes, taking baths or watching TV. Here is why your home became trashed! Everyone reverted back to your days of CHAOS. They thought that since there was no power, there was no power(discipline in our home)! Routines are a discipline. So without power, we didn't need routines, because we couldn't adhere to them anyway. FREE FOR ALL. Well if your routines were a habit, you would not have been able to toss them out so fast.

Our biggest problem is picking up after ourselves. Without our routines we do not police our hotspots, keep our sink clean or keep the children on track with their routines.

So when the storm hits and you are without power, you still have sunlight(during the day). Don't allow the fact that there is a little problem to stand in your way of doing things like you have been doing for months. You want a perfect world and most days is not like this at all. So except the fact that plan B is more the norm than your regular routine and be light on your feet. Enjoy the challenge of feeding your family with a buddy burner. If you were in scouts, you know what I am talking about. Play games by flashlight, read to them, just remember to stay calm and don't let your home get panicked. You are still in charge.

Plan B is like being on a camping trip for me. I love to make do with what ever I have. Since we live in the country and have our own water system, we have to be prepared. So we have some bottles of water in the basement, for making coffee, washing our hair, sponge baths, and cooking if needed. We also have two fireplaces if needed. There are dutch ovens for cooking in the fireplace and a real perk coffee maker. So we won't starve. Knowing what you can do and how, is part of not getting panicked. We also have a gas grill on the back deck. So if the freezer was without power for more than 2 days, we would have to start cooking up a storm.

Do you have an emergency backup plan in your home? Think about this for a little while and see exactly what you would do in case of a power outage.

Do you know where your flashlights are? Can you find them in the dark?

Do you have a weather radio, or battery operated radio for an emergency channel?

How about Extra water for drinking and minimal bathing; and a way to sterilize it?

Do you have an alternate way to heat your home?

How about to cook? And the pot and pans to do it with?

Do you have a way to charge your cell phone or a regular non electric phone?

Do you know about safety in the house with kerosene heaters, grills and candles?

Do you have a fire extinguisher handy?

Do you have plenty of Blankets? Rain Coats, Tents for sleeping outside in case of earthquake.

Just a little planning can keep you from pulling your hair out after the crisis is over. Learn to adapt and you will be so pleased the next time there is a weather emergency.

Are you prepared for bad weather, power outages and evacuations?

Go get an empty Rubbermaid Tub to start building your Emergency Supplies. Label it! Only Use in Case of Emergency! We have a section in our Control Journal for Emergency numbers. We also have a Control Journal for you to just fill in the blanks

Here is another essay about being prepared.

There are also weather apps for your phone that will warn you if there is bad weather in your area. I love this feature. Check out Ryan Hall Yall on Youtube.

July's Habit: Swish and Swipe

#15 One of the Great Traps

Dear FlyLady,

I'm glad that July is here, because Swish and Swipe is something that I really need to re-integrate into my evening routine after my shower.

Not that it doesn't happen at all, but lately it's not been too consistent.

One of the great traps I fall into is to say, "I've had a hard day (or week), so I'll just be nice to myself and skip the Swish and Swipe tonight. And maybe that happens for a few nights. And then suddenly the tiles are dingy, the porcelain in the tub no longer shines (this bathroom is vintage 1968 so there's lots of porcelain) and ...eeewww....there's a bit of mold already beginning to grow in the grout.

And then I think: "THIS is being nice to myself???" It's so much nicer to myself to see a shiny tub and fixtures, and bright tile without soap scum, and mold-free grout. An old nylon-net scrubber, a little spritz of a common cleanser in a water solution, and old towel to wipe things down, and the shower is a pleasure to see and use.

And yes, I divide it into four zones -- the three walls, and the tub itself, between Monday and Thursday evenings, so that each section gets a little extra care once a week with the solution, which I keep in an old spray bottle.

Maybe writing this to the FlyCommunity will give me the commitment to do the S&S faithfully this month and beyond!

The CHAOS Cure! ~FlyLady

This week we are in Zone 3: Our Main Bathroom and another Room.

Zone 3: Mission #2 Tuesday

Dear Friends,

Back to the bathroom and laundry room we go! For the bathroom your mission is to do toss old towels and linens that just plain worn out. Toss them out of your bathroom linen closets. You can donate these items to animal shelters and kennels. For the laundry room you are to go diving behind the washer and dryer for those lone socks and dust bunnies that seem to multiply when they are back there!

Have fun! These are quick, easy and oh so satisfying when complete!

FlyKid Mission #2 Tuesday

Hi Kids,

Today we are going to play Hide and Seek! We are going to seek out all the stuff that is hiding underneath our beds!!Set a timer for 15 minutes and get to it. Pull one thing out at a time, if you love it and need it, put it away where it belongs. If you don't love or need it put it in a give away bag. If it is trash, put it in the trash can!You do not have do all of it today! Just for 15 minutes!

Remember: Less stuff to clean and put away means more time to play!

We Love Receiving Gifts

Dear Friends,

We all love receiving gifts: The thrill of the surprise of what is in the package; opening it up. Wouldn't you like to receive a special gift every single day? This is the gift that keeps on giving.

Your routines even simple ones can give you a great big present every day. There is nothing better than waking up to a home that surprises you each morning because it is CLEAN! I am still in shock when I walk out of my bedroom each day.

This is the finest gift that I have ever received and the best part is I gave it to me! You know you deserve to have the thrill of this gift and it is so simple. But most of the time we are too busy beating ourselves up to take the few minutes to do our simple routines. We don't have time! We think!

Every single minute of every solitary day is spoken for. In our perfectionism we don't think we have time for anything new.

My question to you today is why did you join our group if you were not willing to do the babysteps?

All I have ever asked of you is to get up each morning and get dressed to shoes. Do a 3 babystep before bed routine that only takes a few minutes, go to bed at a decent hour, declutter your home for 15 minutes a day and shine your sink!

You really do have time: your perfectionism tells you that you don't have time! Let's look at how much time we are actually talking about.

Getting up and getting dressed to shoes-15-20 minutes

Before Bed Routine:

Lay out clothes for tomorrow -5 minutes tops

Brush teeth- 2 minutes

Shine your sink-1 minute once you have done it the 1st time

Go to bed at a decent hour-0 minutes

Declutter your home -15 minutes

_____________

Less than 45 minutes

Now 45 minutes at one pop may be too much to ask for but all I want is 15 minutes in the morning, 15 minutes to declutter and 15 minutes at night before you go to bed. You can do anything for 15 minutes!

You are already getting dressed just not when you first get up. This starts you off on the right foot. Unless you have to go to work, but I'll bet even if you do go to work that you wait till the last minute to get dressed. Try it you may be surprised by the difference it makes in your day. You may not be late to work any longer. This is the first gift you can give yourself: A stress free start to your day.

Shining your sink may seem like a useless task that nothing can be gained from. If you feel this way then you have not felt the pleasure of that sink greeting you in the morning. You see it doesn't matter if your sink is stainless steel, porcelain, or 30 years old. It is not your reflection that makes you smile it is the fact that there is not nasty water and dirty dishes shaming you each morning. I have been getting up to my shining sink for four and a half years and I still smile each morning at my sink because it smiles at me first. This is a present I love to open every day.

Doing your before bed routine of laying out your clothes and getting ready for bed may not seem necessary after all, you are already going to bed. What is the laying out your clothes for anyway? Why can't I just wait and pick them out in the morning? Because having them picked out and ready to go does not allow you to PROCRASTINATE about getting dressed. You have NO EXCUSE any more. A before bed routine is the most important habit of the whole day. It is a gift that you wrap up in the evening and you get to enjoy the opening in the morning.

Are you still refusing to go to bed at a decent hour? Oh you feel that this is the only time you have to yourself! Well staying up late is robbing you of your health, patience and love. Not getting enough rest and trying to function on only a few short hours of sleep is not good for you, your marriage or your children. Go to bed at a decent hour and give yourself the gift of FLYing!

I have had many people ask me what the most important part of the FlyLady program is: This is hard to say but if I had to only pick one gift for you to give yourself it would be to go to bed at a decent hour because if you will do this you will be Finally Loving Yourself. If I can teach you that you need your rest then your home will come together. You will no longer be dragging around living off of adrenaline. It all starts with you.

I know you joined our group looking for the magic solution to getting rid of the CHAOS in your home and life. The gift is there for you to open if you will only let go of your perfectionism and start with our simple babysteps.

No one is going to give you this gift but you. If you don't take care of you then who will?

FLYing is like opening up a present every single day! Are you ready to FLY?

My Bedroom is Where I Struggle Most

Dear FlyLady,

I’m a new FlyBaby so please forgive me for not thoroughly knowing your system! I notice the task of the day is making our beds every morning. My bedroom is truly were I struggle the most! It’s just the perfect catch all place for everything. It’s just horrible. I hate even going in there and I hate that I sound like a teenager writing this post. After cleaning the house and my toddler’s bedroom all day, the master bedroom is at the very bottom of the list.

So where do I start? When do I start? Please give me some words of wisdom. I would love to have a cozy oasis for my Husband and I to retreat to at the end of the day.

I’m off to go buy some lace up shoes to start next week off on the right foot!

Thank you so much!

Sincerely,

Katy

Dear Katy,

Our bedrooms have long been a major dumping ground for us when company is coming. We grab up our hotspots and toss them on the other side of our bed. Then we lock the door from the inside and that stops anyone from going in there.

These type of actions are a result of not loving ourselves! We put ourselves last. I want your bedroom to be the most peaceful room in your home!

This week we are going to babystep our way to a restful bedroom! Let's start by clearing out the clutter that is standing in your way of a restful sleep!

Let's look at your flat surfaces.

  1. Dresser: What is on your dresser top?
  2. Bed: Do you have clothes pile on your bed?
  3. Night Stand: Is your night stand filled up with stuff?
  4. Desk: Do you have a desk in your bedroom? Is it messy?
  5. Exercise Machine: Has it become a Clothes Horse?
  6. Chest of Drawer: Is every drawer filled with clothes you don't wear?
  7. Floor: Is the floor on the opposite side of you bed piled high with stuff!
  8. Under your bed: Do you store stuff under your bed? Stop this! Declutter
  9. Floors/Carpet: Is your carpet dirty? or the floors dirty?
  10. Closet: Is your closet filled with trash bags of paper?
  11. Bathroom: Is your shower used as a storage unit?

I know where you are stashing items! Let this be your wake up call to make your bedroom a place of peace!

July's Habit: Swish and Swipe

#22 What Motivates Me

Dear FlyLady,

I am quite a new Flybaby and although I haven't yet managed to get all my routines going I am loving the ones I have started on.

My home is improving by the day and even my 3 children, who have inherited the CHAOS gene from my husband and me, are improving. I just wanted to tell you what motivates me to clean the bathroom each morning - I consider it my selfish act of the day.

I get up and the first thing I do is swish and swipe the bathroom - then I have my shower. I get first use of the room while it is still sparkling clean and that's my treat for the day - stepping out onto the fresh shower mat, grabbing a fresh towel and knowing the room is untouched by anyone else!!

Thank you so much for your inspirational website, I now start my day right and it feels good!

FlyLady here: Our July habit is to Swish and Swipe your bathroom everyday.

Have you ever been embarrassed when someone asked to use your bathroom? Have you ever put off allowing a repair person into your bathroom? Have your dear children watched you clean the bathroom and you have then caught them swishing out the toilet?

We want to hear your stories or tips on the benefits of Swishing and Swiping everyday.

This week we are in Zone 4: Your Master Bedroom, Closet, and Bathroom.

Zone 4: Mission #2 Tuesday

Dear Friends,

Today is the day to attack the clothes pile. Now you all know what I am talking about. This pile is either on a chair, on top of the hamper, dresser or at the foot of your bed.

Set your timer for 15 minutes and grab some hangers or start folding. While you are doing this do not hang up or fold something that you hate. This is the time to let it go! If you do not love it, send it right out the door!

FlyKid Mission #2 Tuesday

Hi Kids,

We are going to do what is called a Hot Spot Fire Drill!

This is when we look around our rooms at the flat surfaces of our furniture. The desk, the dresser and the nightstands. These are the places that we will just pile things on instead of throwing them away or putting them away. These are the hot spots.

To help us clean these places up we are going to do a fire drill! We are going to set a timer for 5 minutes and see how much and can throw away and put away off of those Hot Spots!

Ready.. set.... GO!!

Your rooms will look neat when your flat surfaces are clear.

Trouble Knowing Where to Start

Dear Friends,

We want a home that hugs us! But where do we start? This has been the underlying question that causes us to procrastinate. I have an answer. Let's have some fun and declutter!

We start with shining our sink. That is the absolute first habit to establish is keeping our sinks clean and shiny.

Then we declutter. That's when the question comes up again, "Where do I start?" I have been thinking about this and sometime we get the cart before the horse.

Here is the reason we have to address our clutter issues.

1. Clutter waste time

2. Clutter makes our home look messy

3. Children pull out everything; fewer toys = less mess

4. Too many clothes makes laundry hard to do and to put away

5. Clutter causes us to feel overwhelmed. It zaps our energy.

6. We want peace in our lives and with clutter around there is no peace.

7. Clutter stands in the way of our dreams.

Back to the question of the day; Where do I start? Chicken or the egg syndrome once again; do I declutter the flat surfaces or the cubby holes. I have the answer. BOTH! Now don't get upset! We are not going to do it all at once. I am going to walk you through this one babystep at a time.

The reason your flat surfaces are piled high is because you do not have a place for the items in your hotspot. The easiest way to save time is to have a place for everything and everything in its place. Didn't your Granny teach you that? Our problem is that we don't know where to put anything because all of our storage places are cluttered.

Here is my story: I have telephone and computer stuff in lots of places. When I need something I spend a lot of time searching for it. I had to decide where I wanted to keep my geek toys. For me that had to easily accessible when I wanted something. I decided that I would keep them in a Rubbermaid sweater bin that would slid under my extra bed. But wait! My memorabilia was in one of those bins and the other one was full of tote bags and zipper bags. Here is what to I had to do.

I chose my cedar chest to hold my keep sakes. It had a pillow, two sweaters, a small comforter and other memorabilia; the pillow got donated along with the two sweaters and the comforter is being washed to give to a precious little girl. That made room for the bin of keep sakes.

I picked up the bin and just poured it into the cedar chest. I didn't get sidetracked by sorting this box of magazines and other papers. That was not my goal. Now the bin was empty. I was still collecting all the geek toys into one place. I took the other Rubbermaid sweater bin and pulled out all the totes and zippered bags. Put them all in one bag and declutter the ones I don't like. I placed that in the top of my closet with my other tote bags and purses. Now I had two bins empty. I took the declutter items to the car and put the trash in the garbage can.

Now I was ready to start sorting my geek toys into one bin. With my trusty declutter kit right beside me; Give away, Put Away and Throw away. Now laundry basket is empty. The Rubbermaid bin is labeled and ready to roll under the bed and I have one empty one. See how easy this is. Now I am going to give you a step by step list to get started.

I started by thinking about everything having a place and everything being in its place. As a result of just collecting my geek toys, I have consolidated my memorabilia, my purses and tote bags and I have one empty storage container.

NOTE: Before you start this make sure you are dressed to lace up shoes and you have a done our morning routine. Then put on some fun music. Our Up Kind of Day CD has a lot of peppy music.

Where am I going to put my stuff?

1. How often will you use it- this determines where you put it.

2. Hard to get to or easily accessible (I needed easily accessible)

What is living in that space now?

3. Is it clutter that can be donated? (Much of it could be donated to make room)

4. Can it be put in another other place with like items (I used my cedar chest)

What are you going to put the items in?

5. Rubbermaid bin (under bed storage or tote)

6. A Basket (my laundry basket for collecting geek toys)

7. A decorative storage device out in the open (cedar chest)

8. A Storage bin that seals to protect items from moisture and rodents. (Rubbermaid sealed bins)

What do you do now?

9. You will need a Declutter Kit: A give-away, put-away and throw-away bin or bag.

10. You will need a timer, note card, marker and tape. Once you decide you label it.

11. Set a timer for 15 minutes and begin collecting your caches of like items in a laundry basket.

12. Set a timer for another 15 minutes and empty the place you want to put your collection.

13. Declutter things that need to go away and throw away the trash.

14. Don't just throw it in the floor put it where you want it to go.

15. Don't get hung up on wanting to organize those things. Just consolidate them for now.

What next?

16. Set your timer for 15 minutes.

17. Place the items you have been collecting in their new home. As you put them away declutter the broken items and duplicates.

18. Put the container where you want it.

19. Gather up the trash and throw it away

20. Take the give-away items to the car

21. Pick up after yourself

Now what?

22. Set your timer for 15 minutes and

23. Fix yourself something warm and comforting to drink.

24. Put your feet up and celebrate that you got rid of clutter, consolidated your stuff and found a place for it! I am so proud of you!

I have been corralling my little stash and dash caches of computer and telephone gadgets. What do you need to corral? Clear out the holding area and let's herd our stuff together. Everything having a place and everything in its place; makes for a peaceful home.

Laundry We All Have It

Dear Friends,

Do you feel like you never get finished with the laundry? Is there evidence of the laundry process all over your home? Are there soured towels in the washing machine because you forgot about them? Do you have a dryer full of wrinkled clothes because you were on the phone when the buzzer went off? If you actually folded them are they still on top of your dryer or piled in your laundry basket waiting to be put away?

Laundry is just like dishes. If you eat on plates and drink water out of glasses; you will have dirty dishes. If you get up and get dressed and get ready for bed you will have dirty clothes. Dishes or clothes don't magically get clean, someone has to lift a hand to start the process. Starting the process is just the beginning of five step journey of climbing Mount Washmore!

One day you wake up to no clean underwear. So you either have to go buy some new undies or do the laundry. By this time you have worn every clean item of clothing you have and Mount Washmore seems like Mount Everest. Where do you start?

If your laundry has gotten out of hand there is a good chance that you do not have a routine for staying on top of it! I am going to teach you how to get it done and then give you a routine for keeping up with it.

We are going on a laundry scavenger hunt. Put on some fun music! Go to your laundry room and check the washer and dryer for forgotten clothes. Start sorting those clothes into piles: Whites, delicates, colors, jeans, towels and sheets. Then check your laundry hot spots; the bathroom floor and hamper, treadmill handlebars and the bedroom chair. You know your favorite dumping ground for dirty clothes. Get the children involved too. Ask them to look under their beds and in their closets. Keep sorting the clothing into your piles.

Next gather up all your laundry baskets and put your laundry detergent, softener and stain pretreater in one basket. Then go to all your closets and gather up all the empty hangers and put them in another basket. You have lots of piles of clothes. Put single loads in garbage bags and take them to your car. You probably have ten or more loads. The next thing you are hunting for in this scavenger hunt is money. Go cushion diving or your change jar to gather up coins for the Laundromat. Now don't fuss that you have a washing machine and a dryer. You have not been using them. It is time to get this done!

Before you leave the house, clean out one drawer for each family member. Most of the clothes in your drawers you do not wear because if you did they would be in the dirty clothes bags. So put them in a give-away bag. This way when you get home from Laundromat you will have a place to put your clean clothes. As you are folding the clothes at the Laundromat don't fold things that you don't love or that does not fit. If it is too stained to give away then put it in the trash. Have a give-away bag handy as you are doing your folding. Don't take anything home that is just going to become a stumbling block to your daily routine of doing the laundry.

A load a day keeps you from having to scale Mount Washmore! Don't wait till you are overwhelmed.

July's Habit: Swish and Swipe

#29 A Revelation

Dear FlyLady,

Since this month's habit is the Swish and Swipe, I see at the end of each Swish & Swipe testimonial your request for our stories and tips. So I thought I would impart to you a cute story about my daily Swish and Swipe, and a revelation I had about it this month...

I always see how your followers are called "FlyBabies", but did you know that you have "FlyKitties"? We are a US Navy Family, stationed in Japan. Because my husband is underway rather often, and works long hours when he is home, I spend a lot of time alone with our Furry Children (currently 3 cats).

Early this past January, my husband brought home a 3-month old Maine Coon kitten as a play mate for our 5-year old cat, Calamity, who was becoming obese due to lack of activity. I found your wonderful site at the first of February, and began my early attempts at fluttering. The kitten, who we had named Luna Grace, developed an affinity for the bathroom, especially the toilet. Calamity would always ask for "fountain drinks" (running water from the tub faucet) when we would go into the bathroom for any reason. So now I would find myself tripping over two kitties racing me to the bathroom!

Well, when I began the BabyStep of Swishing and Swiping, I had extra "help"!! Calamity would demand her "fountain drinks" while Luna Grace would wrap herself around the toilet bowl and "point out" the spots I missed (hadn't swiped yet) with her paw! It didn't take long that she recognized the sound of the toilet brush being taken out of it's container and would come running to "help" Swish & Swipe!! Even if I was just shifting it because it had gotten moved, she'd come barreling through the house from wherever she was!! Fast forward to about mid May...

We became blessed by a delicate new life...a tiny kitten, barely two-weeks old, had been found by the workers on our housing base, starved, and no mother. When attempts to contact Vet and Animal Services were unsuccessful, a friend working in the main office, who knew I had a lot of experience with animals, called me to ask for help. So I took the kitten in and began to feed her a milk-substitute with a syringe (she was too small for a bottle). Our attempts to get Veterinary, or Animal Services to take the kitten were also unsuccessful, as were our efforts to find her a home when she was trained and old enough to be adopted. So that's how we came to have Maneki Neko (Lucky Cat or Fortune Cat in Japanese). I'll admit, that I wasn't always per@#%^ about doing my Swish and Swipe every day.

But since it was the habit for July, I made an extra effort. But I quickly discovered part of the problem was that Swishing & Swiping first thing in the morning, like you tell us, doesn't work for us. I am so glad your system allows for flexibility, because our family dynamic doesn't always flow with the FlyLady System. Only being able to adjust the system to our family and household allows us to Fly!!

So instead of giving up, I tweaked it, playing with options until I found one that worked! First, I tried doing it while my husband was in the shower, then cooked his breakfast while he dressed. Well, after he left for work and I returned upstairs, I discovered the bathroom was a mess! You really couldn't tell I had Swished & Swiped at all! But instead of giving up or martyring myself, I tried another option. Take two had me doing it after he left. But that didn't work, because of my morning routine. When I get up, I get dressed to lace up shoes by putting on my workout gear. Then as soon as he leaves, I do my workout. Then I clean up, dress, fix my face and hair. And realized, the sink and mirror needed swiping again.

Hmmm....this had me doing it twice within an hour... So now, I do it after I get cleaned up and ready for my day AFTER my workout! This works great, my bathroom is clean and company ready and makes me smile all day every time I go in! Of course, I've had lots of "help" from Calamity, Luna Grace and Maneki Neko in figuring out a Swish and Swipe schedule that fits our routines! Now, Maneki Neko "helps" Luna Grace make sure I don't miss any spots while Swishing and Swiping the toilet as well as the floor around it and the bathroom scale beside it!

And then came the revelation one day... If nothing blesses you than having a clean toilet when you need it, then why can't the same be for my girls' litter box? Normally, we'd only need to clean the litter box twice a week, on trash days. So now, we have the daily "Scoop, Swish and Swipe"!! And my FlyKitties "help" with that too!! After I'm done with my hair and make-up, I shake out the bathroom rugs and do a quick sweep. Then I pull out their litter box and scoop out all the clumps and put them in the trash. During which, I have all three of them milling around, "investigating" the litter box lid and the cubbie where the box lives. When I'm done, I put the lid back on and slide the box back into the cubbie.

While I sweep up, wash my hands and begin to Swipe the sink and counter, the girls take turns "christening" the clean new box!! Then it's time to Swish the toilet, Calamity is drinking her "fountain drinks", and Luna Grace and Maneki Neko are in position, ready to "help" with the toilet! So my Furry Girls bless me by helping me Swish and Swipe, and I bless them by giving them a clean "toilet" to use every day!

It only takes a few minutes to do this extra step (the time is negligible), but it is so worth it! It makes them happy to have a clean box, and it makes me happy to do it for them! Besides, I'm always entertained watching them lining up to see who gets to use the clean box first!! Thank you so much for giving us the tools and insight to find ways to make blessing our family easy and fun!

Fluttering Fly Cat and the Fly Kitties Calamity, Luna Grace and Maneki Neko

P.S. The girls also "help" with decluttering, FlyLady emails, and even the WHB!! But that's another story...

This week we are in Zone 5: Your Living Room. We will only have Friday for Zone 1.

Zone 5 is the living room, family room, or den. But, only focus on one this week. After a few months, you will have them decluttered them all and the detailed cleaning will be a breeze.

Your task is to declutter this area. Spend 15 minutes a day this week doing something, anything, in this room. It did not get dirty in a week and it will not get clean in a week, but you will be making head-way. It is a trend! Get in the habit of decluttering in small segments of time. Decide what time of day you are going to tackle this little job, set a timer for 15 minutes, and just do it.

Zone 5: Mission #2 Tuesday

Dear Friends,

Let's have a detailed vacuuming session. This means to vacuum the room, making sure to get up against the baseboards and to get under the furniture.

Please be careful that you don't hurt yourself trying to move furniture. If it is too difficult to get under the couch or chairs then just try to get as close to the base of the furniture as you can.

FlyKid Mission #2 Tuesday

Hi Kids,

We are taking a walk! Let's walk through our houses looking for 10 things that belong in our rooms and put them away. If you have left any shoes, jackets, school things, toys or books around the house, now is the time to return them to their home.

When you leave your things around the house, it makes the house look messy. Let's grab up the things that belong in our rooms and take them there.

I am willing to bet that Mom or Dad will be so surprised and so proud of you!

Are You Feeling Overwhelmed?

Dear Friends,

Do you feel like the whole world is crashing in on top of you? Believe it or not it happens to all of us from time to time!

When we get busy, we feel that we don't have time to do even the simplest of routines. So what do we do! We let our HOT SPOTS take over our homes!

Yes that is all it is! You come in the door tired and ready to drop your load where ever you can put it! Then you crash! No wait you have to throw something together for supper and I mean throw! Because when you are finished the kitchen looks like a bomb went off and you feel like you could get out of the way. By this time you are so overwhelmed that you just want to hide so you go to bed without doing the smallest of a before bed routine and all of a sudden your home has exploded in your face and your husband is pitching one of his usual fits! Ugly words are exchanged and you feel terrible!

Here is the secret to stopping this explosion before it starts. When you hear yourself saying that you don't have time or you don't have the energy to do something. Stop dead in your tracks and set a timer for 2, 5, 10, or even 15 minutes and do a quick pick up and put away. That is all it takes to make you not feel so overwhelmed.

Our Hot Spots attack more than our home. They hurt us inside by causing us to feel bad because we can't keep up, as well as zap our energy! Now I want you to pay close attention! You can start over anytime! You are never behind! Do you hear me?

That stinking thinking of "I don't have enough time" is for the birds! It is what got your home in the shape it was in when you joined our cyber-family! It's our perfectionism rearing its ugly head one more time! You can stop the downward spiral by replacing those terrible words, "I don't have time!" with "I can do just 2 minutes!"

This is a huge attitude adjustment for most of us. It takes time and worst of all we don't even realize we are doing it. Now that it has been brought to your attention, you will hear yourself says those words. When you do; turn them around and just set your timer and do just a little. I can hear you now! "BUT! I really don't have the time! She doesn't understand. Well I am here to tell you that I used to think the same way and I have changed my negative thoughts into positive ones and you can do. It all starts with the realization of what you are doing to yourself with those words. It is a form of WHINING! You know I don't allow whining!

I want for you what I have: PEACE! This peace came for letting go of negative thoughts and replacing them with positive actions. Even a little will go a long way toward helping you find this peace!

Basic Menu Planning

Dear FlyLady,

Please help me with basic menu planning. We are stuck in a rut and need some help.

FlyBaby M.

Dear Friends,

Many times we just think too hard on a subject or think it is going to take a long time to develop a menu plan for your family that we just don't do it. We wait till the last minute to even begin to cook something for ourselves and our family. As a result we throw in the dish towel before we even open the refrigerator door and head for the first drive-thru. This drains our pocketbooks and adds unwanted pounds to our bodies. Do you know how much money you have been spending on food for your family? This means in the grocery store and eating out.

Most of our income is spoken for by fixed payments: Utility bills, phone bills, house payments, car payments, credit card payments and now high health insurance premiums. When it comes down to saving real money the only place we have any wiggle room is on our food expenses. A little planning today will keep the money in the bank instead of it slipping through your fingers as you pay your toll at the golden arches.

Here is a simple way to make your menu plan: Keep a food calendar. All you have to do is pencil in what you had to eat every night. This will help you to build your menus for a week and this is a great start. We are all creatures of habit, so use these family habits to help you build a routine for your meals.

Let's use Sunday as an example: Do you go out to dinner or do you fix a big family meal. If you cook; is it pot roast or chicken? Are you beginning to see a pattern to our meals? This is why I like to have a theme to each meal for every day of the week. It can either be the type of meat you are cooking as the main course or how you cook it; the grill, crock pot or casserole. Or you could have a country theme; Italian, Mexican, Chinese, Greek, American, or Plain ole southern country cookin'. You can have some real fun with this and teach your children how to cook at the same time. Each night you could have a different Kid Chef. You would let your children help decide on the menu, make our grocery lists and then help prepare the meal. There is no better way to help a child learn about nutrition and real food. Just teach your child to make a salad and watch them ask for seconds and offer them to all the family.

Knowing what you are going to cook is half the battle. The other half is having the food in the house so you can pull it out of the freezer or pantry and fix it. If you have to go to the store you might as well just pass those arches again. This is why having a day set aside to plan menus, take inventory of your refrigerator as you clean it out and then go grocery shopping will help you enjoy cooking with your family again. You will be surprised at how much fun it is to cook when your kitchen is clean, your sink is shining, and you have food in the house.

Are you ready to feed your family while saving money by getting back in the kitchen? Your sink is shining and you have your shoes on! Get out your calendar and begin simple menu planning.

FlyLady

Our Calendar is large enough to hold your menu plan. We got a great calendar tip that used Post-it Notes for menu planning.

Once the meal is cooked; move the Post-it Note two or three weeks down the calendar. This sets your menu plan on an automatic cycle. It is all about making it easy on yourself.

August's Habit: A Load of Laundry Daily

#5 Laundry and Kids

Dear FlyLady,

I was a single mom of 3 DS for many years. When my DS was kids was old enough to obtain his Learner's permit for driving (age 14 in Kansas), I prepared him several months ahead by announcing that if he was old enough to learn to drive a car, he was old enough to start doing his own laundry.

After all, doing laundry the American way (washer AND dryer) is not rocket science - it's just pushing a few buttons and dials, and adding some detergent. (we lived in Asia for years, where drying racks and ironing are involved - a little too complicated for many kids, so the overseas FlyBabies may need to modify this).

When I remarried and acquired two more DS along with my DH, the "age for self-service laundry" was suddenly lowered to 10 (the age of my youngest of 5 DS) and to keep my sanity, as I was NOT going to manage the laundry for teens boys that spend hours a day pushing buttons on their gaming systems, computers, and TVs!

The first day I showed my 10-year old DS how to load the washer, he said "Is that all there is to it?" One of the biggest advantages to having ALL the DS' do their laundry is that there is no more sorting, and no more mixed up or lost socks.

Also, I can concentrate on keeping up with our large family's sheets and towels, and staying on top of the laundry for my DH and myself.

Another hint for laundry: my younger boys are 18 months apart, and when they were little, I bought different brands (or different colors) of underwear and socks. This saved HOURS of sorting time over the years, and was worth the little extra trouble or expense to purchase different undergarments!

We are in Zone 2; Your Kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of our home.

Check out our daily missions in the daily Flight Plan Email!

Also, the area around the holder was filled with little bits of nothing..elastics, paperclips, ketchup packets! A total mess, in other words.

I had the thought that it would be great to have a mission for this as I'm sure there are plenty of flybabies just like me who don't think about it!

Ready? Set? GO!

The Nose Knows

Dear Friends,

Many years ago I had a housekeeper come every couple of weeks. It would take me days to just get ready for her to come. The sad part was that I lived alone. There was no one to clean up after but myself. I had not learned the trick; that if you get it out then put it away when you finish with it.

My life was in total CHAOS. Even though it would take me days to get things put away enough for my cleaning lady to come over. It was still worth everything I had to go though just to be wrapped in that beautiful clean feeling when I got home after a long day.

I had spent most of my life chasing after mystery smells. You know the ones that greet you at your door when you have been away all day. My least favorite is the cat box smell. When you open the door to that odor; it is as if you have been hit in the face. How can anything that cute make such an offensive odor! That is when we try our best to cover up those smells with scented candles, potpourri and pine fragrance.

We have some dirty little secrets. When we have hyper-focused on a project and let our house go to pot; we know how to look like we have been working all day. When we wake up from our obsession, we get every machine we have in the house going at the same time. We turn on the washing machine and run it again. That could be where that soured smell is coming from. Then we pull the plug on the mystery water in the sink and run a load of smelly dirty dishes in the dishwasher. After that we pull out our vacuum and sprinkle carpet deodorizer on the floor and vacuum it up right quick. We conveniently leave it in the middle of the floor so we look busy when someone pulls into the drive way. After that we light a candle and pour pine cleaner in every toilet. Does any of this sound familiar to you!

I am here to tell you that I don't live this way any longer. With my routines in place, my trash gets emptied. No more falling in the floor and knock you over with the smell of garbage in our home. My sink is not filled with dirty dishes and stinky water and my toilets don't offend my nose when I walk into the bathroom. I no longer have potatoes and onions sprouting, science project growing in the refrigerator, or that lone rotten potato under the sink. We use our produce and eat our leftovers. Money is saved and so are our olfactory senses.

Nothing says "I love you" like walking into a home that hugs you! You can have this beautiful clean feeling too! Let go of your "I don't have time" perfectionism and FLY!

Why Don't You Sell a 12 Month Calendar

Dear FlyLady,

I ordered my calendar last year and it ends in December, is there a calendar that goes from January to December that I can purchase. I really do not want to buy one now when I still have several months to use.

FlyBaby P.

Dear FlyBaby P,

We all need a little GRACE in our lives. Our calendar goes for 17 months from August to December of the next year. We get busy and we need a grace period when it comes to getting a new calendar. The holidays is a tough time to remember to buy a calendar. Those grace months are there to help you; not make it hard for you. They cost you nothing to have them. Use them if you have not reordered your calendar.

I actually keep my calendars. They are not clutter to me. I can see where we were and what we did. I can also see weight fluctuations. This helped me to figure out when I became anemic. Many people write their menus on their calendar because there is plenty of room. Others write down their child's first tooth, step or words. You can also keep funny things your family says in your calendar. It can become your Family History Journal!

Don't allow your perfectionism to bite you once again. This causes us to procrastinate and then before we know it there is no place to write down you family reunion for next year. Next month we will be practicing our menu planning! Is your calendar big enough to write in your meal plans.

August's Habit: A Load of Laundry Daily

#12 I've Modified the Habit

Dear FlyLady,

There are three of us in the family, so doing a load of laundry a day isn't necessary. Here's how I've modified your load-a-day habit to fit our laundry needs and help keep us in clean clothes that are put away.

I used to wait until I saw that we were running out of clean socks and undies to go down to the basement and sort and wash the laundry. That wasn't really a very good way to do things as it meant doing 4 or 5 loads in a couple of days.

Then I'd get overwhelmed with all the clean clothes that had to be put away, so they would end up sitting in the baskets getting more and more wrinkled. In my mind we had clean clothes and that's what mattered

- even if we were having to dig through the baskets to get our clothes each day. I hated it, but I couldn't see a way around it. As I said, doing a load of wash a day isn't practical for us, but sorting the laundry every day is!

Now I take a few minutes each morning to go downstairs and sort out the dirty clothes and towels. If one of my sorters has enough dirty clothes or towels in it to do a wash, then in it goes. Some days I do need to wash two loads, but that's far more manageable than four or five. This way there is no Mount Washmore. As for folding and putting the clothes away, I do it one basket at a time. That way I don't get overwhelmed and the clothes don't sit around for days, just a few hours. I also don't feel like a failure, nor do I feel the enormous pressure of having all that laundry piled in the bedroom waiting to be put away.

While I'm at it I'd also like to thank you for having Swish & Swipe as last month's habit. I had the swipe down, but the swish never got to be a habit - until now. The toilet and I are no longer at odds with each other. I can hardly believe that it's been clean for a whole month! Thank you so much!

We are in Zone 3; Your Main Bathroom and Another Room

Check out our daily missions every day in the Flight Plan Email

Tuesday is our Day Plan and Play!

Zone 3: Mission #2 Tuesday

For the Bathroom:

Check the supplies that are needed in your bathroom. Do you need toilet paper, toothpaste, shampoo, mouthwash, soap etc. Add these to your shopping list this week. Take a visual inventory to make sure you have what you need so one of your family members are not stuck in the bathroom yelling for toilet paper, nothing says "I Love You" like plenty of toilet paper!

Guest/Extra Room:

Another 27 Fling Boogie but this time with things that need to be put away into other areas of the house. Get a box or bag and put the things that have obvious homes and place them in the box or bag. Then go deliver them to their proper homes.

Have fun!

FlyKid Missions #2 Tuesday

Hi Kids,

Today we are going to do something that might be hard but that is okay. You can do this! You are going to go look in your rooms for 11 toys that are either broken or missing pieces that need to be thrown away. Get a trash bag and toss them!

Is Clutter Your Legacy?

Dear Friends,

The sad part is that clutter is what we were given by our ancestors. This attitude of "we might need this someday", so we had better hang on to this. So you see how we have been affected by the past. Do you intend to do this to your family too?

This one member that was afraid of leaving clutter as her legacy, was looking a the physical mess that was in her home and others having to come in afterwards and sort through it all. Yes that is a problem too, any of you that have had to do this know how tough it is. I am not talking about this, even though it is a subject we need to face.

My thoughts have to do with what we teach our children. Yes we were given the legacy of hoarding, but now that we know that this is a serious problem for our homes, health and families, it is time to let go of the things that are hurting us.

You cannot help how you were raised, but you can refuse to allow your children to be saddled with these feeling of "we might need this someday". This attitude was developed because of going though hard times. We can all plot our family trees by this, a mother or father, grandmother or grandfather. These folks have given you this legacy.

Do you want your children to have to deal with all of this clutter in their homes. The worst part is the clutter in their heads. It is time to put an end to this once and for all. The last time I looked, there were no storage units at the cemetery. We can't take it with us. It is the attitude that I want to help you release.

This attitude keeps us from being able to clean and organize our homes. With all of this stuff, we no longer have any place to put another thing, so it gets piled in our basements, on our floors, filling all of our closets and drawers.

Yes it would be awful to leave our families with all of our clutter. It is such a burden for them, but if we start now, we can change our homes and train our families in the art of Less is More, and give them the overall feeling of prosperity and faith. As they see us releasing our the clutter that has clogged our lives, they will see a new way of living Free. Free from the clutter and the CHAOS that came with it.

Are your ready to release this clutter from your lives and create an atmosphere of Peace that will transcend generations as your legacy to the ones you love.

It's time to FLY,

FlyLady

Decluttering a little every day will help you keep clutter at bay.

Ask FlyLady

Why Do We Have to Declutter?

Dear FlyLady,

You are always telling us to Declutter! I don't know how! Where do I start? I am so overwhelmed! Please tell me what to do and why?

Overwhelmed FlyBaby

Dear Overwhelmed FlyBaby,

The reason we want you to declutter is that routines are so much harder to do with clutter standing in your way. Clutter has invaded all our your storage places. In order to put things away that are not clutter; you have to clear out your drawers, cabinets, and closets. My goal this new year is to go through our home and declutter again, 15 minutes at a time. Yes you heard me right! Clutter has a way of sneaking back into your home. We have to stay on top of it. This is why it is so important to declutter 15 minutes each day.

Sometimes we have to be kind to ourselves during the process. We may not be ready to let go of certain things just yet. That is OK. One day you will be ready. Clutter comes off in layers; kind of like peeling an onion. The stronger you get the easier decluttering is going to be.

You can do this. We have a whole section on our website that teaches you how. The main thing to remember is don't do too much at one time; babysteps!

You really can do this!

How to Declutter

Taking 15 minutes each day to declutter an area, using the 27-Fling Boogie, and clearing your hotspots are among some of the most powerful tools you can use to create a more peaceful home. Remember: You cannot organize clutter - you can only organize the things you love!

1. When to Declutter: Decide how often you are going to declutter a zone.

Do a little every day - use a timer. But be warned - this can become compulsive! Once you get started you will want to clean like a banshee! Don't burn yourself out! Only do small amount at a time. The house did not get dirty overnight and it will not get clean overnight. When you set the timer you can only do two sessions at a time. This goal may seem unattainable right now, but you can do it in little pieces. In a couple of months, the whole house will be decluttered.

2. Decluttering Equipment: You will need garbage bags, boxes, magic markers, and a dust rag. Label the boxes "Give Away", "Throw Away", and "Put Away". Line the "Throw Away" box with a plastic garbage bag.

3. Set your timer for 15 minutes. Just do the job as fast as you can and do not pull out more stuff than you can put away in that length of time. This means just one drawer, one closet (or even one shelf in one closet), one magazine rack, or digging under just the furniture in the zone. Not all of them at once!

4. Start at the entrance to the room: Then, work your way around the room clockwise. Do not skip a spot. Whatever happens to be next, just do it.

5. Declutter Away! With boxes at your feet and dust rag in your waistband, start off by cleaning out and getting rid of the things that do not belong in this room. Put garbage in the "Throw Away" box, donations in the "Give Away" box, and stuff that goes somewhere else in the "Put Away" box. Don't worry that you do not have a place for everything right now. By the time you finish you will. That's a promise from FlyLady!

6. What to declutter? Things to ask yourself as you get rid of your clutter:

* Do I love this item?

* Have I used it in the past year?

* Is it really garbage?

* Do I have another one that is better?

* Should I really keep two?

* Does it have sentimental value that causes me to love it?

* Or does it give me guilt and make me sad when I see the item?

Cleanse this room of everything that does not make you SMILE.

7. Sing this song: "Please release me, let me go" as sung from the stuff's point of view. It needs to be loved by someone and if you don't love it - GET RID OF IT! Another song to sing is from Frozen. Let It Go.

8. Get rid of the garbage! When the "Throw Away" box gets full, pull out the garbage bag, close it, and put it in the trash can, the pickup truck, or wherever you keep your garbage. Put a new garbage bag in the "Throw Away" box and keep on Flying until the timer goes off.

9. Donations: When the "Give Away" box gets full, seal it off, and put it in your car. The next time you are out, you can donate to the area thrift shop. Do not save your clutter for a yard or garage sale, you will be blessed by giving it away. The value can be deducted on your income tax. Remember you are trying to get rid of clutter - not relocate it somewhere else in your home. Now, grab another box, label it "Give Away", and get back to work.

10. "Put Away" Stuff: When the "Put Away" box gets full, take the box in your arms and run around the house (good thing you have shoes on - right?) and put the items in the room where they belong. If they have a place, put them there, if not put them in the room where they logically belong. By the time you have finished you will have a place for everything and everything will be in it's place.

11. Timer Goes Off: When the timer goes off, you have to put away all the boxes, but first you have to empty them all. Go as fast as you can.

August's Habit: A Load of Laundry Daily

#19 Tip Occurred by Accident

Dear FlyLady,

My best laundry tip occurred by accident.

I got really tired of all the drama around "where is my blue shirt" or "why don't I have any clean socks".

So I announced to DH, DS (age about 11), and DS (age about 5) that going forward, everyone did their own laundry, including sheets and towels. I would do the household laundry (kitchen towels, etc.). I wrote up instructions on index cards, using pictures cut from a magazine to tell them how to sort and which options to select (picture of underwear and socks on the card with notes about cycle and water temp and whether to use the dryer, same with jeans, t-shirts, sheets, etc..all in a format that even the non-reading little one could understand).

I reviewed the cards with them and then taped the cards on the bottom of the cabinet above the washer and dryer. The little one had to stand on a stool to reach the washer and dryer controls.

Guess what? If they washed their underwear with a red t-shirt and ended up with pink underwear, it wasn't my problem. They were welcome to buy all the new underwear they could afford. And I taught them how use bleach to fix it (sometimes with better results than others). If their favorite shirt was dirty, it wasn't my problem. No more complaints, no more drama. It was wonderful!

The secondary payoff came several years later when first DS went to college. He held laundry classes in his dorm, because he was the only one of his friends who knew how to do their own laundry. I got one of those treasured phone calls in which he said, "Thank you, Mom, for preparing me. I can't believe these people don't know how to do their own laundry." Purple puddles.

Younger son is a cop, and he still does his own laundry, including ironing his uniforms. Older son does his laundry and helps out with household laundry, including for his very young children. I can't wait to see when he and DDIL start teaching their kids to do their own laundry.

Do a person's laundry and they'll have clean clothes for a few days. Teach them to do their own laundry and they'll have clean clothes for the rest of their lives.

Fluttering,

FlyBaby Nancy

We are in Zone 4; Your Master Bedroom, Bathroom, and Closet.

Zone 4: Mission #2 Tuesday

Dear Friends,

We are going to move into the Master Closet today! Spend 15 Minutes decluttering the top shelf of your closet. I am sure you will find things up there you have forgotten all about. If you can't get to the top of your closet, take that 15 minutes and declutter what is keeping you from that shelf.

FlyKid Mission #2 Tuesday

Hi Kids,

Today you are going to open up your sock drawer and look for all of the socks that don't fit or have holes in them. If you have socks that are in that drawer that you just don't wear let's toss those out along with the ones that don't fit or have holes in them!!

Ready, Set....GO.
