It's Time to Party

Dear Friends,

Yesterday I was talking with a FlyBaby on Facebook. We have been friends for many years. I had noticed that the day before she had been suffering with a stomach bug. She private messaged me to say she was thinking about me. It was so sweet. I asked how she was feeling? She said, sucking on Popsicles and cooking up a storm.

I chastised her in a loving way and said you need to be resting! She had a birthday party to get ready on Sunday. She was making a ton of food. This precious grandmother was trying to do it all herself. She was cooking for 20 people.

Do you do this to yourself? We don't have to suffer to be the "hostess with the mostest."

I am going to give you some tips for making a celebration fun and easy on yourself.

  1. MAKE IT A POT LUCK!
  2. Set a menu if you like or leave it to fate. (hard for a control freak.)
  3. Assign dishes to other family members. We do this!
  4. Decided what you are making. Limit yourself to 2 items.
  5. Get food and paper products in the house a week prior.
  6. Use paper plates, napkins, and paper table cloths.
  7. Use your Crock Pot to keep from burning food and the house cool.
  8. Start cooking a couple of days head of time. Be your own sous chef!
  9. Set up a buffet table with note cards of where the food goes.
  10. Get in bed early so you can get up early the day of the party!
  11. Put on your pretty clothes and pace yourself setting things up.

Here are some of my cooking tips.

  1. Baked beans taste the same if you dump the makings in the crock pot and allow them to cook on low. Timing is everything according to the party time.
  2. Potato salad is best made with red potatoes. I boil mine with the skin on. If you want to peel them you can easily after they cook and cool. I cook a couple of days ahead and refrigerate.
  3. Since you need onions for a couple of dishes; cut them up at one time. Bag to be ready to use.
  4. I cook my eggs in the oven. I like to call them angel eggs. I bake them a couple of days ahead of time. Follow directions to a T. Don't forget to add some extra eggs to use in your potato salad.
  5. I make hamburger patties ahead and freeze them. They stay moist inside as they cook on the grill. Put on a cookie sheet and freeze then bag up.
  6. Cover your counter with waxed paper or parchment paper to make clean up easier.
  7. As always, start with a sink full of hot soapy water and an empty dishwasher. It makes clean up a breeze!

I want you to be the most amazing hostess! This only happens when you pace yourself! Planning a party is a great way to get your home looking great too. Check your calendar and set a date to party with your family and neighbors.

Just Tell Me What to Do?

Dear FlyLady,

Every week you talk about Wednesday being Anti-Procrastination Day. Why don't you tell us exactly what to do! It is too hard to think of what needs to be done. I had rather have a direct order.

FlyBaby M. Ready to get things done.

Dear FlyBaby M,

Many of you just want to be told what to do. This is why you love our missions in our daily flight plan. As part of our Basic Weekly Plan , we set up Wednesday to be Anti-Procrastination Day so we can do those things that we don't like to do.

Here it is again! Anti-Procrastination Day! It is our day to;

1. Clean out our Refrigerators

2. Take inventory of what needs to be cooked (Produce, Meat)

3. Check your Calendar for next week and plan around your family's schedule

4. Plan your menus for next week

5. Pay a bill

May's Habit: Get Up and Move

#22 Find Ways to Move

Dear FlyLady,

I have two jobs and unfortunately both are sitting!

I took this challenge to find ways to move even when I don't have 20 minutes or half an hour to do a "real" workout.

I park further out in the lot, I take the stairs instead of the elevator (and usually arrive faster than those offering to hold the elevator for me...), I use the restrooms on another floor and take the stairs to get there and back, I pace while on the phone when i can, I "readjust" my clothes often to get some squats in, and I drop things often so I have to do more squats or lunges to retrieve them. One of my co-workers suggested jumping jacks and desk push ups.

What other ideas do your amazing FLY community have for those of us who are stuck "sitting down on the job?"

Michelle

The CHAOS Cure! ~FlyLady

This week we are in Zone 4: Your Bedroom, bathroom, and your closet!

This week we are working on Zone 4: The Master Bedroom. It also includes any bathroom you may have off the master bedroom, and whatever lurks in the bedroom closet. This will be an ongoing process. You may or may not get the entire room cleaned this week. That is not the objective. Any thing you do in this room now will be an improvement over the way it was last week. Next month you will focus on it again.

Your bedroom should be the cleanest room in your home. Many of you still use yours as a garbage/clutter disposal for the rest of the house. If your bedroom is clean and clutter free, then it becomes an inviting haven for building your relationship with your spouse. The best gift you can give your children is a strong marriage. This is true whether your children are 2 or 40 years old.

Your task is to declutter this area. Spend 15 minutes a day this week doing something, anything, in the master bedroom. It did not get dirty in a week and it will not get clean in a week, but you will be making head-way. It is a trend! Get in the habit of decluttering in small segments of time. Decide what time of day you are going to tackle this little job, set a timer for 15 minutes, and just do it.

Thursday is our day to run some errands so we don't have to on the weekend!

Thursday at FlyLady is Errand Day. We use this day to get out and run whatever errands we need to do for the week. Make a list of wherever you need to go and whatever you need to do during the day today and then get to it. Please be safe out there. This can include:

  • Grocery shopping
  • Doctor appointments
  • Dentist appointments
  • Dropping the clothes off at the cleaner
  • Dropping of clutter donations

And tons of other things. If it needs to be done outside the house, today is the day to do it. Make a list of these things and check them off as you do them.

Zone 4: Mission #4 Thursday

Dear Friends,

Yesterday we worked on the nightstands and today we are going after the dressers! Get rid of anything that is not necessary! Instead of a pile up of cosmetics, place them in a ziplock bag and then store them in a drawer when not in use. For perfumes and colognes, toss what you no longer use and place you favorites on a pretty tray, plate or mirror.

Keep this space neat and clutter free, you will love to wake up to the flat surfaces in your bedroom decluttered.

FlyKid Mission #4 Thursday

Hi Kids,

Today we are going to declutter the tops of our dressers. You know how we can just pile things on our dressers and they start to get cluttered and messy? Today we are going to fix that! Let's set a timer for 10 minutes and see what we can get done! If you have things that need to be put away, put them away, if you have things that need to be thrown away - throw them away!

I bet all of you can do this really fast, I think that all of you will be able to do this in less than 10 minutes! Have Fun!

Five Star Review

The FlyLady is Such a Good Motivator! I Don't Cringe When People Pull Up Unannounced. I am Happy!

I highly recommended this book for any type family or single person no matter what age you or your children are. I was a fly baby for a short time years ago and recently, I found you on fb about 6 months ago. I ordered the book and have really enjoyed the revival in my heart and my house.

AMAZON

I used to cringe in agony when I would see people pull up in the driveway now I don’t. Just like Marla says the husband has started organizing and getting rid of his stuff too. The teenage boys are a work in progress. I loved the tips on , the delicate cycle, storing sheets under the bed( I’ll Have more room in my linen closet and that’s major when you are limited on closet space like us) .

The FlyLady is such a good motivator! I have found my self quoting her and singing the songs. Earlier I was cleaning and was upset about something having water spots and Marla popped in my head and said “that’s your protectionism “ and I moved on.! I so wish I would have stuck with The Flylady years ago when the kids where younger but, so glad to have her now.

9 Steps to a Beautiful Table

Dear FlyLady,

Newbie here, off to a good start. I know everyone has those items they find themselves staring at with no clear strategy on how to tackle it. One of the worst problems I have is the dining room table which is in the front of the house. It's the dumping ground for mail, kids school notices, statements, the "to shred or not to shred" stuff, toys, even clothes...ugghh.Any advice? Thanks for the help.

You're the light at the end of the tunnel.

Lora

Dear Lora,

On Saturday we start on Zone 1. We all just want the facts. Tell me what to do and I will do it. The problem is you are procrastinating. You need 3 boxes labeled Give Away, Put Away, and Throw Away.

1. Take everything off of the table and put in a laundry basket.

2. Put a pretty vase or table cloth on it after you dust it.

3. Now get a cool glass of water and take the basket to the living room.

4. Set your Boxes up in front of you. Sorting 6 inch at a time.

5. Set your timer for 15 Minutes and work fast; no thinking just sorting.

6. Most of the papers are trash/recycling. Toss them in Throw Away Box.

7. When timer goes off take Put Away items and run around the house and put them away. Put trash in shredder or recycle bin

8. Take a 15 minute break

9. Set your timer again and repeat till the basket is empty.

One word of warning! Don't get sidetracked! Stay focused on the Basket. If you can't find places to put the items that are in the put away bin; just get them close to where they need to go.Now I am going to tell you how to keep this pile from happening again.

1. Process the mail as soon as you get it. Most is trash! Put trash in recycling to shred.

2. Keep a trash can in each room of your house.

3. Make your Dining Table a "NO PILE" Zone. Keep it pretty!

4. When you hear yourself say; I don't have time. Set your timer for 2 Minutes. Never put anything down to do later. That is also a signal to set your timer for 2 Minutes.

You can do this! Take the Clean Dining Table Challenge. When you get it done send me a picture of your beautiful dining table. Send the picture

May's Habit: Get Up and Move

#29 Aqua Aerobics While Moving in May

Dear FlyLady,

Forgive any odd spellings since I am typing this from my phone.

I just wanted to say that my mom and I have been taking water aerobics classes 2 evenings a week at the local pool. We both feel 100% better than we did a month ago.

Mom says she feels 21 again and my back is feeling so much better I was just able to spend 2 days packing up a house with only a few Advil.

Anyway, to anyone who feels they are too overweight or out of shape or old, mom and I are here to tell you that we highly, highly recommend Aqua Aerobics.

It is fun and energizing and anyone can do it.

Zone 5 Mission #4 Thursday

Dear Friends:

Back to the Living Room we go! One of my all time favorite missions for the living room is to go sofa and chair diving! This is where we start digging through the furniture and pluck out the cheerios and old socks. I am always amazed at how much stuff I can pull out of the couch in just one short month!

FlyKid Mission #4 Thursday

Hi Kids,

Today we are going to go into our rooms and gather up things that don't belong. Things like, water bottles, cups, glasses, snack wrappers (you know all those things that you are not supposed to have in there!) Let's set a timer for 5 minutes and get to it.

Throw away what needs to be tossed and return the things to the other rooms in the house where they belong. Have you "borrowed" anything like scissors or glue that needs to be returned? Make today a put away kind of day.

Ready? Set? GO!

Good Enough is Good Enough

Dear Friends,

Our precious little princess inside of us just really wants to be loved! She has tried so hard for acceptance and most of her life she has been told in many different ways that she was not good enough. Eventually the little child just gives up!

Did this happen to you? Were you forced to wash dishes over and over? Were you told to clean your room only to have your mother or father come in and do it for you by throwing your stuff away? Can you see how we rebelled against this lack of acceptance? We quit trying. We knew it would never be good enough so why bother.

I just want to hold that precious little child and tell her that she is loved and show her that she is good enough and is worthy to have a home that blesses her. We have had housework was used a punishment. No wonder we didn't want to do it. I have gotten emails where a FlyBaby found herself standing at the sink sobbing. She wasn't even upset. She was just crying. Now I am not a psychologist or a doctor but do you think she could have been having a flashback with a traumatic incident from her past. I have never thought of that before. She said she used to be punished with washing the dishes.

What did we have done to us! What have we done to our children because of that! We have the ability to re-parent ourselves. The hardest part is letting go of our perfectionism is saying "Good Enough" is "Good Enough"! This goes against everything we were taught! Everything we were tortured with and everything we have crammed down our throats from the first day we were born.

Our poor little child within us tried so hard to live up to those unrealistic standards. Even when we did our best it was never "Good Enough"! We may not have been told that in words but their actions would speak much louder than the words that were never said.

Perfectionism is a parasite that feeds off the love we didn't receive. It establishes residence in its host the first day that little child gets crushed. From that day forward perfectionism has its hold on us. Then we pass it on to our children. My goal is to rid our bodies of this vicious cunning chameleon-like parasite and keep it from taking root in our children and grandchildren.

Perfection is something that we are taught is supposed to be a good thing! When you look hard at it, you can see that it is a disguise that either makes you give up before you start or it pushes you to exhaustion. That little child only wants to be loved so she just works and works for that praise, only to have her little bubble burst. Then she says why bother because it will never be good enough.

Are you ready to expel the perfectionism Parasite and not infect others with it? It starts with forgiveness. Our parents had this done to them too. We can stop it right here and right now!

Help I'm Menu Challenged

Dear FlyLady,

First thank you so much for all your advice - I find it a huge help.

My biggest problem, where I get totally overwhelmed and after 5 years of FLYING am still crashing is menu planning. I just can't seem to be able to do it. I find it overwhelming and spend hours on it each week - just today I've spent about 3 hours trying to menu plan for the week and got more and more depressed and ended up with only the beginnings of a plan.

My family doesn't like a lot of the food, so I find I spend hours trying to substitute and it adds to my stress. I would love for you to be able to break down menu planning in the same way you break down cleaning - into managable bits, starting with babysteps. I just look at the whole week and my recipe books and my food cupboards and freeze - literally I just sit there for hours and end up with half a list and feeling terrible.

Thank you,

Menu-challenged

Dear Menu-Challenged,

As I see it you are making it too hard on yourself. You are looking for inspiration in the wrong place. Don't look at your recipe books! They don't know your family like you do. I want you to keep it simple.

  1. Keep a diary of what your family eats each night.
  2. Plan your meals around what your family will eat.
  3. Be kind to yourself
  4. Get the family involved
  5. Even get them to help cook.
  6. Don't introduce new things but once a month

Have a family meeting. Give everyone a stack of 14 note cards and have each person write their name at the top. Put on some fun music or set the timer. See who can write the most items on the cards. Then play go fish.

Go around the table and hold up a card and ask; Does anyone have spaghetti for example? Make a pile for each meal. See how many piles your family can make. The winner gets to decide what day you are fixing the meal.

There you have it! The meals your family will eat. For the one that only you like or your husband; save those for Date Night. This can be fun. If you need help more help with the full menu; ask the family to write down their favorite sides by color. I like the make a meal with lots of color. Play the go fish game again.

Take one of the cards and write down the ingredients for the meal on the card. Add the sides you want to fix with the entree. Then start your grocery list for this week. If they have come up with more than seven menus then you might have two weeks planned.

Doesn't the idea of playing a game with your family seem much more fun than sitting for 3 hours beating yourself up!

June's Habit: Drink Your Water

#5 Share My System

Dear FlyLady,

I thought I would share my system to drink enough water after my first "month of June" with you, a few years back.

This works particularly well if you have small children to drive to school and other activities, or if your job lets you out of the office during the day.

Drink one glass of water when you get up, and one glass before bed at night.

Then drink one glass every time you leave the house, and another as soon as you get back. Same goes for the office. Take your water bottle with you ( I would NOT live without it!) everywhere you go, and sip whenever you're waiting for something (from traffic lights to children getting out of wherever they are, to supermarket queues).

In just a few days I was drinking my eight glasses easily! And in the summer even more than that. Just in case this can inspire anyone.

Thank you for helping us take care of ourselves!!!

And tons of other things. If it needs to be done outside the house, today is the day to do it. Make a list of these things and check them off as you do them.

Zone 1: Mission #4 Thursday

Dear Friends,

Let's go into the dining room and get down and dirty with the cobwebs and the dust bunnies. Look up and look down, get the dust off the baseboards and the cobwebs out of the corners in the ceiling. While you are looking up, check out your light fixture, does it need to be dusted?

FlyKid Mission #4 Thursday

Hi Kids!

We are taking a walk! Let's walk through our houses looking for 10 things that belong in our rooms and put them away. If you have left any shoes, jackets, school things, toys or books around the house, now is the time to return them to their home.

When you leave your things around the house, it makes the house look messy. Let's grab up the things that belong in our rooms and take them there.

I am willing to bet that Mom or Dad will be so surprised and so proud of you!

Learning to Lead

Dear Friends,

As our children grow up we find ourselves getting involved in their activities. It doesn't matter if this is your chosen profession or someone bailed on the kids and you volunteered to help out. Whatever reason you have been placed in your leadership role it is important for you to set an example for the children. The best way to do this is to have your home in order.

I can see you shaking your heads now! What does having my home in order have to do with me being a Sunday School teacher, scout leader or soccer coach? It has everything to do with your stress levels. A calm leader is an efficient leader.

We love being with the kids. It makes us feel young again because we get to play. Let's face it, all that any of us want to do is play. With any volunteer position there is always paperwork. That paperwork has to be done for many reasons but the main one is to keep the children safe.

I want to help you build your Volunteer/Leader Control Journal. My Grandmother taught me that everything has a place and everything in its place. Our Control Journal will be that place for your permission slips, check lists and records. It will also help you find things when you are looking for them.

When I was in the sixth grade I had my first experience with scouting. My sister Paddi had been a Girl Scout and had signed up for camp. She spent the summer with our father and could not go to camp so I got to take her place. I was hooked! Two weeks of fun, consistency and organization. Who knew that roughing it in the woods could be so much fun! I think that those weeks helped to shape me into who I am today.

After camp I joined our local troop. Each Wednesday we gathered at a church for our meetings. I remember our leaders having refreshments, crafts and activities. I also remember Patrol Leaders and having to work together as a group. I think that this is where I get my "Can Do" Spirit!

As an adult I was not involved in scouting even though it was near and dear to my heart. I did help to teach Sunday School to four, five and six year olds. I was so disorganized at the time that I am very thankful that I was only called upon once to actually teach the class.

Every adult is a teacher whether they choose to be or not! Children are watching you! They see how you react in all situations. If you are going to be a good example for the children you are guiding; you will need some simple routines in place to help you be organized. It all starts at home.

If your home is a mess you can't find things, when you can't find things you become stressed. That stress causes you to procrastinate. In order to lead you have to be prepared! This is why getting your home in order will help you more than anything. With that being said let's talk about our control freak perfectionist personalities.

Your goal as a leader is to give the children wings! You can't do that if in order to hide your flaws you have to do everything by yourself. We don't want anyone to find out our dirty little secrets so we don't delegate because we haven't looked at this week's activities or even planned for 15 minutes. We get caught up in doing it all ourselves; when in fact "You are the leader" Leaders delegate, check up on progress and reinforce good behavior.

We started Camp GonnaWannaFLY this week. You are the Camp Director. Download your FREE Camp Control Journal!

Saving Your Saturdays for Fun

Dear Friends,

Our whole lives we have played "Catch Up on the Weekends"! This put a sense of dread into our daily life. We no longer looked forward to a wonderful weekend filled with fun with our friends and family. This all started when we were children. It is how our mothers did it! We would have to spend all day Saturday cleaning house or we were banished to our rooms for the evening. I truly believe this is why we despise cleaning house. It has always been a punishment for us. I want you to have a reward for your Home Blessing Efforts! A Saturday to play is a great gift for you!

The solution to saving your Saturdays is very simple. Let's think about how many hours you spend frantically cleaning to catch up from a whole week tossing your routines out into the street! Between our piling and procrastination our homes look like a bomb went off. You can look at a room and see evidence of the things that were done this week. You know the package that had to be wrapped for a birthday party or the whole week's worth of mail piled on the kitchen counter that is about to fall into the floor.

On Saturday you don't wake up excited about cleaning all day. You sleep in a bit; drag around in your pajamas for a couple of hours with a pot of coffee to get you moving in the right direction. By the time you get started it is already noon! The next six hours are spent cleaning like a banshee so that you don't feel terrible. All the while you are yelling out orders for everyone in the family to get in gear! I get sick just thinking about what we have done us and our family; all because we lie to ourselves with these words; I DON'T HAVE TIME!

The truth is; what you don't have is ROUTINES! You have the time, you just choose not to do anything because you don't think you have six hours to do it right! Well you don't have six hours to clean like a banshee but you do have seven minutes.

Implementing just seven minutes in the morning, when you come home from work and before bed will give you back your Saturdays. Maybe we can call this our 7 Minute Saturday Rescue.

The secret is to pick up after yourself and get the family to do it right along with you! It can become a fun game. Set your timer three times a day, morning, when you get home from work or school and just before bed. Everyone has to put away the things that belong to them. It is up to you to remember to do it. When you forget you only make it harder to do the next time.

This does not mean you can leave the dishes in the sink and on the table. This is part of cleaning up after dinner and shining your sink. If you do this all week long then on Saturday you can do your Weekly Home Blessing Hour! With your piles put away and hot spots extinguished, your Weekly Home Blessing Hour is a Breeze! Then you are off to have some fun.

FlyLady

Dear FlyLady,

I have been a FlyBaby for a few months now and I just had to send you a testimonial regarding your routines.Yesterday My DH and I left for work at around the same time and arrived back home almost at the same time.

I was there maybe 15 minutes before him. I had taken care of some groceries and rebooted the laundry when he came in. He looked around and said "the house looks nice honey." I was so pleased because I hadn't even done my afternoon routine yet, but I had put out those hot spots the evening before.

Your routines are becoming second nature to me and our home has never looked so nice. Thank you FlyLady. Your routines and zones make our home almost clean itself.

Happily fluttering in VT.

June's Habit: Drink Your Water

#12 I am on the Wagon

Dear FlyLady,

I took the challenge for June. I ordered the water bottle.....oh my goodness....water tastes delicious!!!

I keep my bottle filled from dawn to dusk. And add a slice of lemon, lime or orange.

My twin daughters have even grabbed the habit.

My Ah-Hah....I am not as fatigued at the end of the day.....I was super dehydrated from lack of water. Go figure.

So far, I am on the wagon....Feeling better in St. Louis!!! Thanks.

This week we are in Zone 2: Your Kitchen; the Heart of your Home.

Focus on one little part — reclaim your kitchen sink. Empty everything out of your sink, shine it up, fill it with hot soapy water, and start washing dishes, one at a time.

  • Do a 27-Fling "Trash" Boogie. Trash is clutter. When the bag is full, take it outside, right away, to the trash bin.
  • Clear out your mail hotspot. Get rid of the old magazines, catalogs, and advertisements.
  • Clear the clutter off your counters one at a time.
  • Clear the clutter off your kitchen table.
  • Take a peek at your pantry. Don't pull everything out and start reorganizing; just take a look, see what you need, and start a grocery list.

If your kitchen is clean but still cluttered: start decluttering. Check out our daily missions. FlyLady usually sends out one during the week which concentrates on decluttering one small area of your kitchen.

Thursday is our day to run a few errands!

Zone 2: Mission #4 Thursday

Dear Friends,

Your Mission for today is to declutter your plastic wraps and foil drawers, cabinets or shelves. We all have a spot that we keep these items and there is always one empty box in there and some lone baggies that are trying to escape. Toss the empty boxes, the rolls of plastic wraps that are too stuck together to work, and those strays that you are not sure if you should use them or not.

This is quick and easy! Have Fun!

Have Fun!

I Know Where the Power Is?

Dear Friends,

In our Perfectionism, we don't seem to grasp the simplicity of the timer. We automatically think that keeping a nice house takes lots of time out of our day and we have to do it all at once.We don't need a solid block of time (a whole day to clean) to have a home that is hug-able. We just need 15 minutes.

One time I saw a book at the grocery store. This author had taken 15 minutes and turned it into something awful. She called it the 15 minute frenzy. I'm sorry she just does not get it either. All our lives we have lived in a frenzy. It is time that we stopped running around like a chicken with our heads cut off and just focus.

This is all we are doing; setting our timers for 15 minutes and staying focused. We are NOT racing the clock trying to beat some world record. We just want to be consistent with our focus and take care of ourselves at the same time. Being in a frenzy is not healthy. We are looking for peace not panic.

The beauty of our is that we don't have to finish what we are doing. When the timer goes off; we get to celebrate what we have done and rest. Try it sometime! It is so calming. The timer is not a race! It is a focus.

I feel sorry for people who try to make this harder than it is. But it really makes me mad when they take something as simple as a timer and hurt my Flybabies with my words when they don't understand the whole concept.

The foundation for what we do is loving ourselves. This makes everything work. You are not loving yourself when you are running around in a frenzy! Slow and steady is what gets our home and our lives in order. One babystep at a time. You can do this.

Our timer says. Just 15 minutes. In our perfectionism we don't think that 15 minutes will even make a dent in it. It will and you will be so surprised at what else will happen. It will give you confidence in your abilities. Some days I use my timer all day long. I work 15 minute on a project and 15 minutes on a musing and 15 minutes on the house; then I spend 15 minutes taking care of me. Because without those 15 minutes I start to feel tired. I have to refresh my batteries each hour; drink some water, get up and move a little, put on some different music and go smell the flowers in the garden. This is taking care of me!

Use your timer to get things done in a calm consistent fashion and to take care of you! It is a tool I could not live without!

Are you ready to FLY?

FlyLady

If you are still allowing your perfectionism to get in the way of such a simple concept then just try two minutes. We are going to change the way you think!

Whenever you hear yourself say, "I DON'T HAVE TIME!" Set your timer for 2 minutes and get started on that one thing you said you didn't have time to do. It could be reading a book or playing with your babies.

Then send me an email to Fly...@flylady.net with 2 MINUTES TO PEACE in the subject line.

What is the Do It Now Principle

Hello FlyLady,

What is the Do It Now Principle please? I must have missed that. thank you!

This is just plain old common sense. Do It Now means just that! Don't wait and do it right that minute. Now this doesn't mean to get sidetracked from what you were doing. The rule is that the job can only take a couple of minutes. Instead of putting it off till later; do it now!

Here is an essay about Doing it now!

Procrastination Hurts You!

Dear Friends,

What have you been putting off? How many times a day do you allow your perfectionism to paralyze you! You know exactly what I am talking about. You hear that nasty little voice in your head all the time. I don't have time right now. YOU DON'T HAVE TIME FOR WHAT? To do it RIGHT! To do it like your momma did!

We are not good judges of time! In our heads we think emptying the dishwasher will take hours when it only takes 3 minutes!

Our perfectionism/procrastination also hurts us in other ways. We keep putting off going to the doctor because we don't have time! We don't place an order for something we know will help us and then all of a sudden they are gone and we start to beat ourselves up over our procrastination again. We have received many emails about the Girlfriends calendar. We have sold out of them. For those of you that put it off; I don't know what to say!

I live by the Do it Now Principle! When something needs to be done and if it is not done then you will feel bad; this is when I do it! Think about putting a fresh roll of toilet paper in the bathroom. We only think of it when we are in there. Guess who usually gets left with an empty roll. YOU! Your procrastination has hurt you again.

Our minds are going 90 miles an hour. We can think of more things to do in 5 minutes than we can do in a lifetime. Let's channel some of that power into action by Doing It Now. When you find yourself using this principle more often you are going to surprise yourself! This is not getting sidetracked! It is staying focused and accomplishing something so we don't have to beat ourselves up later!

Have you been putting something off: Paying bills, doing laundry, shining your sink or using our big calendar. When you don't pay your water bill (when you actually have the money) it is not fun to go without water for two days! You do have time; if you will just do what needs to be done and don't put it off another day! Just think, this will put an end to those nasty voices in your head!

There are many of you who are procrastinating about shining your sink! This is the habit that changed my life! Please give it a try! It won't take that long! Go shine your sink and you will feel the hope that will keep you going. Every Thursday is our day to run errands. Make sure that before you go grocery shopping that your refrigerator has been cleaned out and your menus for next week are planned. Put your grocery bags in the car and make sure you eat something before you head out. Don't forget your water bottle. This will save you lots of money.

Are you ready to FLY!

June's Habit: Drink Your Water

#19 FlyLady to the Rescue

Dear FlyLady,

I have been fluttering for a few months now, and I love it! I just finished my first year teaching, and I needed some help figuring out how to make my life run smoothly and make my house look like a grownup's.

FlyLady to the rescue! I love how simple you make routines and forming new habits.

One habit I didn't need much help with was drinking more water. I am a singer and flute player and like to keep hydrated.

I have a trick for drinking water throughout the day: any time I am about to do a task with multiple steps, I start by filling a glass of water (I use a big tumbler with a straw). Then after each step in my task, I take a sip or two of water!

For example, getting my face done in the morning: Put on moisturizer (sip), cover-up (sip), blush (sip).... It also works well with washing dishes, grading papers, or the Weekly Home Blessing!

Thank you for all you do for so many of us,

Fluttering FlyBaby E in North Carolina

This week we are focusing on the main bathroom and one extra room. The extra room may be a second, or third bathroom, a guest bedroom, a child's bedroom, the office, or maybe the laundry room. Just pick one extra room and focus on it this week.

The bathroom: Do you live in fear that someone will actually see your bathroom? It is too easy to close our eyes to the mess that is hiding right behind the bathroom door. This week, we are going to open that door to the bathroom, and BabyStep, by BabyStep, we are going to conquer the CHAOS that is the main bathroom!

Your bathroom should give you sense of relaxation and joy when you enter. This is a place for you to pamper and take care of yourself. Treat the room with love and respect and it will bless you with comfort and peace.

Remove the obvious clutter, take out the dirty laundry, and empty the garbage can.

Dear Friends:

For the bathroom today, take 10 minutes to toss old cosmetics and perfumes. If you have these items that you have not used for over a year but they are still hanging around, it is time to dump them. If you have not worn anything in the past year then toss it. Most cosmetics have a limited shelf life and are harboring grounds for bacteria. This also applies to lotions and moisturizers.

I understand for some of you who are new to FlyLady there is a lot of hard work to be done. So, today we are going to do an extra 27 Fling Boogie like we did on Monday. For those of you who are FLYing and just need some maintenance in this room your mission is to sweep or vacuum this room.

One little thing that helps me is to put on some uplifting music while I do these missions!

Let Your Light Shine

Dear Friends,

Our success in FLYing comes at the heels of two important words: Persistence and Consistence. When we look at our own history we see an inconsistency in how we looked at our housework. You know the old story of stash and dash, crisis cleaning and then crash and burn. This left our homes in shambles after a few short days. Then we would beat ourselves up because of it!

I had to deal with this when I made my final attempt at getting organized in 1999. On January 1st, I spent all day looking at why Pam and Peggy's card file system never worked for very long for me. It was not that it was not a good system; it was, but it was how I did it was the problem. I would go gung ho for several days and then run out of steam. Then the guilt would enter into the equation and I would not want to look at the box and stick it under the counter.

As I examined why their system only worked for a little while; I realized a major factor. I was working too hard and not letting the system to work for me. I had not ever established habits. I only let the cards guide me and it didn't matter what order they were in. If getting dressed popped up at 3 in the afternoon that was when I did it, that is so alien to me now. I also had way too many cards. With my perfectionism, I thought if one card was good then a card for everything I do would be much better. Boy was I wrong. That abundance of cards was overwhelming! I would give up!

Giving up is our lack of persistence. We do this all the time when we say we don't have time or that is too hard. We just throw in the towel and begin to whine, "that too hard, too many emails or she doesn't understand my situation is different." We are persistence in one area of our lives; we hate change. If you are not finding success it is because what you have been doing is not working. Doesn't common sense tell you that you have to change something and try again.

Thomas Edison through trial and error and persistence eventually discovered the filament that would glow in a glass bulb. Every failure for him was one less thing that he was going to have to try! Failures are a good thing. They teach us what not to do the next time. That is if we don't get hung up in our failures and beat ourselves up for them. Use them as a learning experience and keep plugging away.

Every mistake I have made in my life helps me to grow and become wiser! If I had given up I would not have become FlyLady. If we don't learn from our mistakes we are destined to make the same ones again and again! So looking back on that fateful January 1, 1999, I realize that I had never established a habit and I had been too hard on myself. That day I determined that I would be nice to me and practice one habit. Shining my sink was all I had to do for the whole month!

Let's just say I was persistent in my quest to get organized and along with that persistence I used the consistency of doing one thing every day to help me find the peace that I knew was out there! It worked for me and it has worked hundreds of thousands of people as well. When you find something that works you stick with it.

We don't try to reinvent the light bulb every time we screw one in a socket; we trust it and don't waste our time trying to improve on it. We are very creative people and we love to do things our way or shall I say try to make better a system. This is when we skip the foundation babysteps.

I am giving you a light bulb that works! Trust it and take the first steps of shining your sink and being nice to yourself. As you establish the basic habits you are going to begin to feel your light shining brightly! With your habits established you are free to follow your dreams and use your creativity in ways that bless you instead of ways to sidetrack you. You can't skip the most important steps of Persistence and Consistency.

Where Do I Store My Rubba Swisha

undefined

Dear FlyLady,

I have purchased a FlyLady toilet brush(Rubba Swisha). I was reading somewhere on the FlyLady comments, someone's suggestion about what to put in with the brush to have it ready to use. Now I can't find the comment. Can you help?

FlyBaby Rita

Dear Rita,

I keep my Rubba Swisha in an old flower vase. I have used a crock that you keep kitchen utensils. When you take a toilet brush out of the toilet it drips. I have always keep it in something that will catch the drips. As I started decluttering I decided that soap is soap and poured and old shampoo that I didn't like into the vase. I would add a little water and just pour in with the other old bath gels. I have even tossed in old bars of soap. Don't do whole bars into the soap mixture. Put the soap bar into a jar with water and let it dissolve. You can grate the soap too.

With the soapy liquid in the vase you just hold up the Rubba Swisha and allow the excess to drip off and then swish your toilet. The soapy liquid will not grow fungus. If your liquid does not have enough soap in it, you will get some black stuff in it. The soap kills the germs and keeps that stuff from growing.

When you do a Swish and Swipe every day your bathroom will always bless you! Nothing says, I love you, like a clean toilet when you are sick and hugging it.

1. Wipe mirror of dental floss home runs

2. Put things away and wipe down counters and sink

3. Swish the toilet and take a wad of toilet paper/baby wipe and wipe down the seat and rim.

4. If you have boys you may need to wipe the floor with a dirty towel if their aim is bad.

Here is your FLY-namic Swish and Swipe Duo. Our July habit is Swishing and Swiping! Do you have a Swisha and Vase Pack ?

June's Habit: Drink Your Water

#26 Dusted Off My Wings

Dear FlyLady,

I can't believe I am writing to you about drinking water.

I have been so reluctant to drink water that my friends and family have come up with all sorts of ways to help. It is because I live in Tucson, Arizona where in the summer 95 degrees is considered a cool day!

Well, I have recently dusted off my wings after years of flying around your system, embracing habits here and there. The best has been doing a load a day for me!

Now June is drink water month and I have decided to take the challenge. I have a water bottle and fill it with ice water and have been sipping it and refilling it throughout the day.

Now, here is a cherry of a tip! I went into the freezer to get more ice and saw I had an open bag of frozen cherries that I nibble on. I decided to drop one or two frozen cherries in my water bottle with the ice water.

The ice melts pretty quickly on a hot day, so when I finish the water, I get to top it off with a still fresh cherry! FlyLady, I will do anything to embrace this habit.

Looking forward to more tips!

This week we are in Zone 4: Your Master Bedroom, Bathroom, and Close.

Thursday is our day to run some errands so you don't have to waste a Saturday!

Zone 4 Mission #4 Thursday

Dear Friends,

Today we must be going after the right side of the bed! If you have been using your night stand or floor as temporary storage for clean clothes, dirty clothes, and other stuff, your mission for today is to clear this off and put it away! No moving things from the right side to the left or the other places we have cleaned off this week. I am so proud of the work you have done this week! Utilize your timer and do not get overwhelmed.

Slow Down You Move too Fast

Dear Friends,

This spring we have been watching a lot of movies. We had never seen the Fast and Furious Movie Series. So we started with the first one. These films wear me out! By the time the credits roll; I am exhausted!

Have you been running around with the same fast and furious mode of existence? If you stand back and look at your home; you can actually see your path though the house. You have been putting out fires as fast as you possibly can; leaving what you were doing and never getting back to that project. I know you are bone-weary. It is time for us to stop being frazzled and stay focused.

Lots of time we are busy doing something when the children get real quiet. We are hyper-focused on what we are doing and the next thing we hear is a commotion. That's when there is a clean-up on aisle 4. I saw the cutest picture the other day of a toddler standing on the family basset hound's shoulders to get into the refrigerator. It was probably Mom who took the picture, but imagine a gallon of milk splat on the floor and you trying to figure out how that happened. I have a simple remedy for this before that will stop it from happening.

Get your babies to help you with your projects. For example, you want to work on your scrapbooking; put your baby in their high chair and let them draw or color. If they are older give them some scissors to cut out construction paper and glue pieces of paper together. I know you are yelling at me! "When do I have time to scrapbook!"

Now don't get fast and furious with your fingers to send me a frustrated reply. We have gotten quick to respond when someone angers us. When we learn to control our urges to say ugly things in writing or even with our voice; then we will know we are FLYing. Because when you love yourself, you will not do or say anything that will make you feel guilty.

I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel; as I was pondering this essay this song kept creeping into my head. Slow down you move too fast. You got to make the morning last. Just kicking down the cobblestones. Looking for fun and feelin' groovy.

When you slow down you can look for the fun. The groovy part has to do with our routines. We get into a groove doing one habit after another. This frees us to get things done and look for a little fun. Let's get back to the gallon of spilled milk.

This is your opportunity laugh and teach your child that there is humor in everything. Mommy doesn't bite your head off if you make a mess! And Mommy loves you! Let's clean it up together.

So slowing down doesn't mean you are mopey. We can set our timers and do a two minute interval of fun and excitement.

Are you ready to FLY?

Ask FlyLady

What is a Hot Spot?

Dear FlyLady,

Help me to understand what a Hot Spot is? I don't know where to start! My whole house is a mess!

FlyBaby P in Tennessee

Dear Friends,

This week we have been getting Back to Basics! It is time you learned how to find and eliminate your hot spots!

Is your home more than 15 minutes worth of messy? If you have lots of hot spots then I will answer this question for you; YES!

Our hot spots make our home feel and look cluttered. Why is it that we feel the need to fill up every flat surface in our homes? It is because there is an empty place to put something down. We walk in the door with our arms loaded and are desperate to unload; that is when we drop things in the first clear spot we find. It can be a chair, the counter top or even the floor.

Let's look at why we are trying to carry so much in the first place. We don't want to make a second trip to the car. Isn't that funny; we weigh ourselves down because we don't want to waste a few extra steps. I want to change your attitude about trying to carry too much and just make one trip.

We could all use a few more steps in our day. I have to walk up one level to get to our front door. If I come in through the basement, I would have to climb a flight of steps. It only takes a short amount of time to get up to the house and back down to the car. Here is what I do when I get out of my car. I gather up all the trash and my purse or computer and head to the door. Then I go back to anything else that is left in the car.

I do this with groceries too. I take the refrigerated stuff first and put it all away and go back down for another load. Every time I come in the house I put everything away. This keeps me from being overwhelmed. I don't like to see my counter tops covered up with bags of groceries. I love coming into our home and seeing clear counters.

When our flat surfaces are covered up with stuff; we get overwhelmed too. If my coffee table is piled high with clutter, I can't write. A messy desk is not an example of a productive mind. It is symptom of a cluttered mind. We have to stop and clear off the hot spot to get the clutter out of our minds so we can think.

Our poor babies deal with this problem too. They have so much stuff in their bedrooms that they don't know what to play with. Get rid of the clutter and find peace and help them to enjoy their rooms. With less stuff they will be able to better concentrate.

With fewer things we will be able to better focus on what we need to do.

July's Habit: Swish and Swipe

#3 A Quick Note

Dear FlyLady,

Just wanted to send a quick note and another Thank You!

This months habit is something that I have already conquered so it will be a month of trying to get my evening routine down.

But I'm so happy that I have already integrated the Swish and Vase Pack into my mornings!!

Last night I stopped by to say hello to my new landlords, who have purchased the house we live in and are moving in within this week. They showed me some of the work they have done in the upstairs and downstairs area (where my old landlords son lived).

They told me how filthy all of the bathrooms were, and they have decided just to get new toilets! This is a big expense after purchasing a big home. and it felt really good to tell them that I clean the toilet every day so they will never have this problem when we move out!

Is the apartment clutter free yet? Not quite...but I don't have to worry about being embarrassed by the bathroom!

Thank you!

Lisa, Flybaby from Long Island

This rest of this week we are in Zone 1: Our front porch, dining room, and entrance.

This week our Zone is very important to our homes. The entrance to our homes make the first impression on our guests, our family and ourselves. When we walk into a clean and tidy home our whole attitude will be uplifted. This puts a smile of pride on our faces. We have gone so long, looking at such a terrible mess, that we have been ashamed to answer the door. I want you to get rid of guilt that accompanies clutter and CHAOS. To do this you have to get off your franny and start to declutter this area.

Your task is to declutter this area. Spend 15 minutes a day this week doing something, anything, in these rooms. They did not get dirty in a week and they will not get clean in a week, but you will be making headway. It is a trend! Zone 1 Mission #3 Thursday

Hi Kids,

We are going to do what is called a Hot Spot Fire Drill! This is when we look around our rooms at the flat surfaces of our furniture. The desk, the dresser and the nightstands. These are the places that we will just pile things on instead of throwing them away or putting them away. These are the Hot Spots.

To help us clean these places up we are going to do a Fire Drill.

We are going to set a timer for 5 minutes and see how much and can throw away and put away off of those Hot Spots.

Ready.. set.... GO!

Your rooms will look and feel less messy when those flat surfaces are neat.

July's Swish and Swipe Habit

What are You Waiting For?

Ducks in a Row

Dear Friends,

This morning I started to think about how this is our perfectionism creeping in once again. We don't seem to be able to do anything, until we get all of our ducks in a row. As my son's paternal Grandmother used to say. "You milk your ducks and I'll milk mine". That was her way of telling us to mind our own business. She was so right. I don't know what this has to do with anything, but I loved her and she taught me a lot.

Our ducks tend to run into other people's yards. Until we are able to take care of our ducks, we should not even try to tend to others. Have you ever watched a mother duck with her babies in a row behind her? They follow directly behind her. She is setting the example and she keeps them close to her. She cannot force her family to follow her; if she tried to line them all up it would be a big mass of confusion. As it is, she sets the pace and they toddle right behind her.

I know how you think. With our ability to hyper-focus and our perfection thrown in to boot, we have a tendency to want every thing perfect before we even start. How about that control journal of yours? You want it absolutely perfect before you begin to even think about establishing your routines. This is another excuse for not getting started. Do you hear me on this one? If the control journal is not perfect in your eyes, then you have already failed.

Well I am here to tell you, you are wrong. The control journal is just a notebook to hold your routines. Now listen closely to me. Routines can be established by using post-it notes or simple lists put in a notebook. We are not a publishing a book. It is a tool to guide you through your day; it holds your routines, important phone numbers, grocery list and menus. This is such a simple tool, but it doesn't have to be completely finished before you start to use it.

Your baby steps will help you establish your routines one item at a time. You can do this, but don't obsess about it. So if you have said to yourself, "I'll establish my routines, but first I have to get my control journal made:; then you are deceiving yourself once again. It is not the control journal that establishes your routines; it is you. You do the work; you focus on the problem and tackle it with your eyes wide open.

Here is the order that your ducks should be in. You can not force them, you just start the process and it will all fall into place behind you.

Shine your sink

Get dressed to shoes, fix your hair and face.

Lay out your clothes for tomorrow

De-clutter 15 minutes a day

After you have established this small morning and before bed routine, you can begin to add more things. It is not that you even have to think about adding them, it is a natural progression. As you get good at something, you don't have to think about it any longer. You will also be having more time to accomplished things and you will be looking for ways to fill this precious time. I know you don't believe me, but it will happen if you will let and and not think about it too much. Let the system guide you.

Babysteps!!!! You can use our calendar to help you get your "Ducks in a Row!"

Menu planning

Laundry routines

Basic weekly plan

Zones

These will all fall right into place, when you get the basics out of the way.

Are your ducks almost ready to FLY?

What Goes on Your Calendar?

Dear FlyLady,

Do you write things on your calendar like breast exams even when you don’t know when the appointment is yet? Or to have the car serviced? I am afraid my calendar will be messy?

FlyBaby J.

Dear FlyBaby J.

Procrastination is our middle name. This is why we have an Anti-Procrastination Day! Wednesday is always the day for us to take care of the things we have been putting off.

Think of your calendar as your memory! You put things on your calendar so that you don't have to try to juggle them in your mind. You have too much to do. Allow your calendar to help you! All you have to do is remember to check your calendar three times a day; Morning, Noon, and Evening! When an item is on your calendar you can release it from your mind till it is time to take care of it. Then the "Do It Now" Principle kicks in!

I would suggest that you put these items on a small hot pink Post-It Note! Get those appointments made. You can only skip one Anti-procrastination Day! Place an X on it and move it to the next Wednesday. To help yourself get it done; look up the phone numbers right now and put in the Post-It Note.

Now think about when your car will need serviced before you go on vacation or later this year for Thanksgiving and Christmas travel. I like to change my oil with the change of the seasons. If I have not been traveling then I can do it in the spring and fall.

Here is a link to our Home Maintenance Control Journal.

Here are the reminder label pages that go along with the Home Maintenance Control Journal. These are formatted to be printed on Avery 5167 labels. You can also write them on small Post-It Notes. Don't allow your perfectionism to get in the way of taking care of yourself, your home, or your car. Your calendar is made to be used.

Our calendar has huge squares that are large enough for all your reminders. Use your calendar to keep your home, car, and body maintained!

Use stickers to keep your calendar colorful and fun!

Sit down with your calendar and get some things on it. What good is an empty calendar!

July's Habit: Swish and Swipe

#10 One Simple Task

Dear FlyLady,

To say you have changed my life would be an understatement. My husband is afraid to say anything lest everything go back to the way it has always been - clutter, clean, more clutter, give up.

One thing though - although my house was always CHAOS - six kids will do that - it never did stop me from having people over - I was a master at saying "whatever" and moving clutter to my bedroom. I realized at some point that while I am actually fairly competent in other areas I have no idea how to keep house.

My daughter was FLYING for a couple months before she hesitantly told me about you. I checked out your site and the rest is history.

I do have to tell you that about six weeks into following your suggestions I had an epiphany when I saw the day's task was to wash the bathroom rugs and I thought ," I already did that" ....a month ago and then went (insert forehead slap here ) OH! You have to do that more than once in your life! I could go on and on but that is not why I am here today.

As Swish and Swipe is the habit for July let me tell you how this one simple task has been life changing. Obviously it has changed how lovely my 3 bathrooms are, and I do not begrudge anyone not cleaning a bathroom besides me because I delight in three company ready bathrooms daily.

However the simple statement - you deserve a clean toilet - has become my mantra for everything else in my life. I deserve to get to bed at a decent hour, I deserve to wear a nice outfit, to take time to primp a tad, to use a pretty plate for morning toast, to not save everything for "good" .

One of my daughters pointed out that a cute skirt and top outfit actually cost me less than a pair of jeans and expensive running shoes so why not wear a "good" outfit and feel pretty - dare I say it? on a Tuesday! I have explained to a friend going through a terrible divorce that "you deserve a clean toilet " as a metaphor for she deserves to be treated well and be happy.

If we, who spend our days doing for everyone else, remember that we too deserve a clean toilet, we will learn that nobody will suffer if we neglect ourselves more than we will. And that everyone will benefit if we treat ourselves as well as we treat everyone else in our lives.

My teenage son has made more comments about the house looking good and me looking good in the past four months than he did his entire 17 years before I started FLYING. Re-read that - teenage son: noticing and complimenting! Proof enough of how life changing things have been around here?

I know you get testimonials daily but do know that you are changing lives! Or rather you are changing attitudes and we, out here in the trenches, are changing lives - one clean toilet at a time!

Thank you,

Flybaby in Boise, Idaho

This week we are in Zone 2: Our Kitchens.

The kitchen is the heart of our home.

Have Fun!

Have Fun!

Stress is Stealing our Lives

Dear Friends,

It has been a stressful summer. A little stress may in fact help us to cope. Adrenalin is pumped into our body and we work at a faster pace and get things done. This is how a small woman is able to pick up a car when an accident has happened to free someone that is pinned under-neath. So adrenaline is our super fuel, but too much can cause problems with our engines.

Most of you know about a time in my life when I was very depressed and need to go to the hospital. As a result I was prescribed anti-depressant medication. I do believe that this helped to save my life, but it was not the only thing. I wanted to feel better, so I search high and low for help.

For seventeen years I was in an oppressive relationship. Everything was my fault or so I was told; from my husband (at that time) not going to law school to the fact that I didn't work outside of the home and money was tight. After four years of the insults; I made up my mind to find a job. Even though I felt that staying home with my son was as important a job as any in the world. I was just tried of the abuse.

While I was a Stay-At-Home-Mom; I had it all together. I only had one child and it was not that difficult to take care of our home. Then toss into the mix working forty-four hours a week and juggling church, day care, helping car pool football players all over the county for my husband along with his blaming attitude. I could not win for losing.

We had to buy another car when I started working. Oh and that meant that after daycare and the additional car payment, gas and clothes; I was only bringing home $25 a week extra money. Hey but it kept him from going into a rage. I was juggling as fast as I could to keep him happy. At times the house would start to fall apart. I would have to rush home on my lunch hour and crisis clean; 15 minutes of drive time and 45 minutes of cleaning. I was amazed at what I could accomplish in 45 minutes.

I was living a life of egg shell walking. The stress levels of trying to keep someone happy that is never going to be happy were debilitating. I was sick all the time and no matter how much I dieted I could not lose weight.

All I ever wanted was to feel loved. I thought that if I did all the right things and kept the perfect home that he would love me. Boy was I wrong. I was also determined to stay married because I was raised in a church that didn't believe in divorce. I was stuck in more ways than one. I began to believe all of the negative things he told me. My self-esteem was gone. My face broke out all the time, I fainted many times, I was so cold and eventually became a food addict. Every time I was upset; I would find myself in front of the refrigerator crying my eyes out and feeding my face to stuff my anger and pain. Then I would crawl into bed to comfort myself.

I didn't even realize that there was anything wrong; at least my son was not growing up in a broken home. I have now found out there are much worse things in life than a broken home; it is called torture and abuse. No one should have to be subjected to this life.

I knew that there had to be a better way to live and that God did not want me to be this unhappy. Now remember my husband at that time was happy and oblivious to my unhappiness because all I wanted was to keep him from going into a rage and throwing things at me. I started reading Pam and Peggy's books to find out how to keep house. Their system really did keep me on track, but I began to realize that there was more to life than cleaning. In their book the Happiness File; I began to laugh again.

Now for someone who doesn't laugh(dh and not Dear Husband either) being in a house with laughter is painful. He began to ridicule me for laughing out loud. It was at that time that I realized that I could not live like that any more.

In order to make myself a better person I started reading and listening to books on tape. Rita Davenport also helped to rebuild my shattered self-esteem with her tapes. I saw her on an info-commercial and bought her tapes; It's Time For You!! If I listened to them one time I listened to them thirty times. I began to believe her when she said, "What you think about you bring about!" Even today I catch myself quoting her. She is now a good friend and one of my mentors. I thank God every day that I had the courage to save grocery money up to buy her tapes and use them to find me again. It was the best money I ever spent.

I started feeling better about myself. Well let me warn you. When you get stronger the abuser is going to feel threatened and the abuse is going to get worse. My depression got worse too and so did my health. Eventually I found myself just sitting for hours unable to function. I realize that not only was I suffering from depression but the depression may have been a result of stress and my body shutting down in protection mode. In three years; my boss of ten years had died, I got a new job, after a year got laid off and started college and then my step-father got sick and died after nine months of cancer treatment; then he left me in charge of a huge farm and a monster debt to go with it. I finally broke down.

This is when a friend asked me to go with her to the doctor because she needed someone to ride with her to Memphis. She knew me and knew I would do it for her. What I didn't know was the appointment was for me. That day they wanted to put me in the hospital because I was suicidal, but I couldn't stay in Memphis; I had a family to take care of. So I went back home and told my dh that they wanted me to check into the Charter Hospital for depression. Now here are those infamous words that made me realize that I had to take care of me! "If you check yourself into the loony bin; don't bother coming home!" I was in shock that he didn't want me to get well. So I packed my bags and turned right around that night and went back to Memphis (two hours). So I guess a little rebellion is good for us. My gut reaction was to take care of me.

While I was in the hospital for those ten days; I learned about stress. I believe that our mental and physical health is tied together. I started working on my physical health. I had been raised in church and I knew how to pray, but I didn't know how to walk in God's light all the time. I began to meditate for purely relaxation purposes and what came from that was a very real sense that God is with me ever minute and every second of every day and even though I was taught that God does not talk to us directly; I was finding that as I slowed down the juggling of my thoughts that I could see clearly what God wanted for me. My sweet darling calls those God Breezes.

After I got out of the hospital on January 31st; I started on my depression medication for six weeks. After nine days the Prozac kicked in and I realized that I could not live with that dh any longer. When I told him I was moving out, he said, "But why; I am happy!" I said "I know. I made sure of it". All I took with me was my stereo to play my Rita Davenport tapes, my goose down comforter because I was so cold, my car and the clothes on my back and moved up to the farm in an old house that used to be a country store.

This house had an antique claw foot tub in it and some days the only way I could get warm was to get into a hot bath and stay there for hours. I asked a doctor about this and he said that I had artificially raised my body temperature and had probably out of instinct help to cure myself of the low body temperature. I also started meditating and reducing the stress in my life. A week after I left him; I was walking down the street and some one told me I looked ten years younger: My face cleared up and then I started my period. I had the worst cramps I had ever experienced in my life. But guess what I figured out. The stress of living with him and my body shutting down had protected from the pain of the cramps. So I celebrated having the CRAMPS! I could feel again! Now I am crying! I won't every forget it!

Since freeing myself of this stress and learning to deal with other stressors; I am hardly ever sick. I have been taking care of me for many years and I am just so proud to be here and to be able to help you. If we don't take care of ourselves then who is going to? No one cares about us the way we do. God gave us our minds, bodies and spirits! It is up to us to meld the three together at all times. For I feel with all my heart that as our spirit goes; so goes our mind and as our mind goes so goes our body and vice-versa. It is all connected to God.

He gave us the power of positive thinking and along with that; positive actions. This is why we wear our shoes; get dressed in the morning and get enough rest. He also gave us our intuition. It is God in us! When we don't heed those messages we end up regretting not taking action. It can be as simple as taking a bath like it was with me or stopping a negative thought in your head! Listen to yourself; when you hear negative things come into your head; make them positive.

Now I want to put this all together for you! We are not superwomen; we may play them in the little sitcom we are starring in; but let's face it; the harder we strive for perfection the farther we get from it. Trying to live up to someone else's ideal of perfection is hard enough; but we are trying to live up to our own unrealistic standards. These are standards that have been set by the perfectionist that raised us and their parents. Then combine this perfectionism with an attitude that you can't get rid of any thing because you may need it one day and we become imprisoned in our imperfect cluttered homes wallowing in self-pity and shame. It is this fear that someone will find out our dirty little secret that keeps the stress levels turned up on high and what makes our bodies shut down.

I want to put a stop to this self-torture. We can do this quite simply by letting go of our perfectionism and realizing that it does not have to be perfect to be good enough to bless our family. We can also do this by going to bed at a decent hour and eating good food and drinking water (which most of us don't do)! Or even by clearing off one hot spot or shining your sink or developing a small routine. Any one of this things can help you to start feeling better. The best part is that the more you let go of your perfectionism the closer we become to the one perfect thing; GOD!

I want for you what I have; Peace and this peace came from letting go of my super woman mentality and taking care of me.

I love you all!

How Do I Get Control of the Clothes?

Dear FlyLady,

I have so much clutter I don't know what to do. My daughter and her three kids live with my husband and I. While we love their company, they bring added clutter to our already cluttered place. What can I do to get control over the clothes? I feel I am washing clothes every day and getting nowhere. I need a flight plan! I am not an organized person and have spent my life wishing I was. Your swish and swipe plan was great for me and my bathroom smells wonderful at last. Thanks for the tip! Please enlighten me on how to get control of this problems. Note: she has lots of shoes and clothes; short of throwing them away what other options do I have.

Surround by Clothes in Alabama

Dear Surrounded by Clothes,

Laundry and clothing are a big part of our clutter. Our August Habit was laundry, but we don't have to wait till then to get started. We practice doing a load a day!

I want you to sit down with your daughter and babies and have a family meeting. Keep in mind that this is your home and you all have to figure out how live together in peace and harmony in a clutter free environment. It is your home and your grandchildren, but doing their laundry should not be your responsibility. You are welcome to help her, but she needs you set some rules.

Three children have lots of clothes that do not fit. This is why there is so much laundry. Clothing that doesn't fit gets tossed into the dirty clothes basket. The first thing you and your daughter need to do is clear out one drawer for each member of the family. This will make putting things away much easier.

Then, you are going to have to figure out what fits each child. Children don't need tons of clothing. A fun way to decide what to keep and what to give away is to have a fashion show. Since I don't know how old each child is, this could be easier with older children. Put on some model runway music and show them how to prance around the floor showing off their cute clothes. This is also a good idea to put together outfits for school!

Next is establishing a routine for laundry. Once you declutter the clothing, laundry will be more efficient because unwanted clothing will be out of the pile. Laundry has five parts: Sort, wash, dry, fold, and PUT AWAY! The Sort step and the Put Away Step are responsible for making your home look messy!

When clothing is piled on chairs, dressers and thrown in the floor, our rooms look like clothes basket blew up. Eventually, the clean clothes and dirty clothes get all mixed up and your laundry has doubled.

Here is a quick solution! Gather up all the clothes and sort them into wash piles. Bag them up in trash bags or pillow cases. Then, take them to a Laundromat and get them all done at once. Stagger them in the washers and dryers so they don't all get done at once. Take plenty of baskets and hangers so you can fold and put them in each person's basket. Have one bag for give-away clothes. Place them in the bag as you are folding! Then, drop them off as you head home. As soon as you get in the door, put all the clothes away.

Once you have decluttered, the clothes that are too small or too large and you only have clothes that you wear, you can establish that routine of one load a day. That is start to finish. Some members put a in load as part of their before bed routine and then as part of their morning routine, they place it in the dryer.

I hope this helps. Just remember to take BabySteps!

July's Habit: Swish and Swipe

#17 No Problems

Dear FlyLady,

We have two and a half bathrooms.

The upstairs is mainly for company and not used much. So I clean it well bi-weekly and sometimes even monthly.

When I am upstairs for a reason, I just use that bathroom and give it a Swish and Swipe. Right before company comes, I check it and usually it only takes a Swish and Swipe to get it company ready.

I swish and swipe the Master Bath during my regular morning routine and my half bath which is off the laundry room as part of finishing up the kitchen.

No problems!

Flying in Lake Wylie, SC

FlyLady here: Our July habit is to Swish and Swipe your bathroom everyday.

Have you ever been embarrassed when someone asked to use your bathroom? Have you ever put off allowing a repair person into your bathroom? Have your dear children watched you clean the bathroom and you have then caught them swishing out the toilet?

We want to hear your stories or tips on the benefits of Swishing and Swiping everyday.

The CHAOS Cure! ~FlyLady

This week we are in Zone 3: Our Main Bathroom and another Room.

If your bathroom is clean but still cluttered: Start decluttering (makeup, old towels, old medicine, hair supplies, shampoos, etc.). Check out our daily missions.

Thursday is our day to Run some Errands; so we don't have to on the weekend!

Zone 3: Mission #4 Thursday

Dear Friends,

Your bathroom mission for today is to assess your supplies in the bathroom. It is errand day and make a list of the items that you need to stock your bathroom. Do you need toothpaste, deodorant, mouthwash, soap or shampoo? Remember, nothing says "I Love You" like having enough toilet paper!

For the Laundry Room, do the same thing. Do you need laundry soap, bleach or fabric softener? Once again, nothing says "I Love You" like having clean underwear!

FlyKid Mission #4 Thursday

Hi Kids,

Today we are going to go to our desks or wherever we keep our school papers. It is time to declutter these papers. If they are all in a pile on your desk, on the floor of your room, or somewhere else in the house, go to them and get ready. We are going to get rid of 27 pieces of paper. Worksheets or old homework, papers that we do not need anymore.

Let's Get Things Done

Are You Sinking?

Dear Friends,

Do you ever feel like you are sinking? And you are going down for the last time and no one is there to save you! In fact the whirlpool is about to suck you into the dark abyss. This is how we all feel when we are living in CHAOS! The whirlpool is the vicious cycle we are living in and we don't know how to stop it! You can't even remember how you got into the dangerous waters in the first place!

I can tell you exactly why! Procrastination! You didn't want to look at the problem so you put it off. You probably still don't want to address the issues that are pulling your under! But we do this every single day.

You see it is not one thing that is pulling you down is all the things that got our homes in the shape they are in! Everything is connected and one thing starts getting sucked into the whirlpool the rest will follow! UNLESS you start to pull your own self out one bad habit at a time. I know you don't believe me, but as strange as it may seem, FLYing can give you the life preservers when nothing else will!

We put off paying bills! We put off buying groceries! We put off planning menus! We put off doing our taxes! You name it we can find a way and an excuse for putting it off! We have to stop this right now! Just stopping one thing will keep your head above water.

Wednesday is always Anti-procrastination day, menu planning day and clean out the refrigerator day. Look at what taking care of these things will do for this whirlpool you have gotten yourself into. With the refrigerator cleaned out, you can see what food you need to buy, what you need to use up and what leftovers can be used in a pot of soup. Just the act of doing it starts your mind thinking about menus and a grocery list. While you are cleaning out the refrigerator, keep your grocery list handy so you can jot down a few ideas for next week's meals.

Now after you have cleaned out the refrigerator, sit down with a cup of tea for 10 minutes and think about what you can cook next week. Having groceries in the house is half the battle to cooking. When you don't have it on hand it is just much easier to call for pizza or takeout! Which is why you are gaining weight and losing money; could this be a reason you are in the whirlpool in the first place? Think about the life preserver of just cleaning out the refrigerator: could this be the key to not falling into the abyss!

You have it in your head that menu planning it going to take a long time, it is hard or that you have people that won't eat what you cook. Your excuses are just another form of whining and procrastination. If the truth be told, menu planning only takes about seven minutes if you will do it.

Eventually you will have several week's worth of menus and grocery lists that you can recycle and not even have to go through this process except to clean out the refrigerator so you won't forget to utilize some produce.

Cleaning out the refrigerator along with menu planning saves you money! This is money that can be used to pull yourself out of this whirlpool. You have to start someplace! So go clean out your refrigerator!

My hand is out; grab it and we will FLY together!

Where is the Good Calendar?

Dear FlyLady,

Although I loved your wonderful calendar last year, I didn't order one this year. My husband had been hospitalized since December and it didn't seem to be a priority.

This week he finally came home. The second day he was home, he saw me writing his doctor's appointments on the dinky calendar I had been using. He asked where the "good" calendar was. Then he stated that your calendar was the absolute best, because it had such big squares, one could write so much on it, and he could see it from his wheelchair across the room.

I knew I had to order one right away. Never again will I fail to get my new calendar from FlyLady.

Thanks for making such wonderful products.

July's Habit: Swish and Swipe

#24 It Saves Me Extra Work

Dear FlyLady,

My two cats have their kitty litter in the linen closet of my master bath. Obviously, keeping the litter clean is very important!

So now that Swish and Swipe is my "assignment" for the month, I have added scooping the kitty litter and wiping the tile floor in the linen closet to my daily Swish and Swipe.

It takes an extra 3-5 minutes, but it saves me a tremendous amount of work later in the week.

Prior to this time, I have been ignoring the kitty litter until 1) it smells awful in the bathroom; 2) it's time for the weekly change of litter.

Keeping up with it every day means my bathroom smells fresh all of the time. So easy when it doesn't become a major clean up job!

Fluttering along,

Deecy

I can help you get a jumpstart with my book,

The CHAOS Cure! ~FlyLady

This week we are in Zone 4: Your Master Bedroom, Closet, and Bathroom.

Thursday is our day to run a few errands!

Thursday at FlyLady is Errand Day. We use this day to get out and run whatever errands we need to do for the week. Make a list of wherever you need to go and whatever you need to do during the day today and then get to it. Please be safe out there. This can include:

Zone 4: Mission #4 Thursday

Dear Friends,

Yesterday we worked on the nightstands and today we are going after the dressers! Get rid of anything that is not necessary!

Instead of a pile up of cosmetics, place them in a ziplock bag and then store them in a drawer when not in use. For perfumes and colognes, toss what you no longer use and place you favorites on a pretty tray, plate or mirror.

Keep this space neat and clutter free, you will love to wake up to the flat surfaces in your bedroom decluttered.

FlyKid Mission #4 Thursday

Hi Kids,

For today's challenge you may need to ask Mom or Dad for help. We are going to make our beds as soon as we wake up!

This means to pull the sheets and covers up and straighten them. Then place your pillow at the top of the bed. It is so nice see your room with a made bed. It is one of those things that makes your room look less messy.

If you do not know how to make your bed, ask Mom or Dad to show you how. With practice you will be able to do this on your own and have your room look so much neater.

Make the Most of Your Food Dollar

Dear Friends,

This week we have been focused on saving money by planning our meals. Today we are going to make a simple game out of it. I have been doing this for forty years. When my son was little, I played this game each week. I would check the grocery store sales and see what was a good bargain for the week. Then I would see how many meals I could put together with the sale item.

Let me give you an example.

Ground Beef is at a “good price” per pound and you buy 15 pounds. We posted this on Facebook and look at what everyone came up with.

1.   Burgers on the grill

2.   Meatloaf

3.   Taco Tuesday

4.   Spaghetti Meat Sauce

5.   Cheeseburger Bake

6.   Hamburger Stroganoff

7.   Sloppy Joes

8.   Nachos

9.   Mexican Casserole

10.   Salisbury Steak

11.   Hamburger Steak smothered in onions

12.   Stuffed Peppers

13.   Chili

14.   Enchiladas

15.   Stuffed Cabbage Rolls

16.   Hamburger Pizza

17.   Quesadillas

18.   Shepard’s Pie

19.   Goulash

20.   One Skillet Lasagna

21.   Taco Salad

22.   Chili Mac

23.   Cheesy Beef and Rice Bake

24.   Meat Pockets baked inside of Crescent dough

25.   Tamale Pie

Now pay attention to this next part. If you buy 15 pounds of ground beef and you leave it in the refrigerator and not use it; you have wasted your time shopping and money. I work hard at being kind to myself. So here are some tips to help you process your ground beef bargain.

1.   Go to the grocery store when you are not tired.

2.   Have a plan for when you get home to process your bulk Ground Beef. I make two or three meat loaves and pat out patties for the grill, hamburger steaks, and Salisbury Steak. Then I put the rest in the crockpot with a cup of water to cook the meat while I am making the burgers and meatloaves. I stir it every 15 mins to break it up into little pieces. I drain it before bagging.

3.   I love my vacuum sealer for all the items in my freezer.

4.   Do not stack patties as they are hard to break apart and you could get cut. Ask me how I know. LOL You could freeze on a cookie sheet then stack them with wax paper between patties.

5.   If you don’t have a vacuum sealer then use freezer bags and get the air out. Be sure and label the packages with the date and item. Keep a Sharpie in the box of bags. I bag up two cups of precooked ground beef in my bags and lay the flat to freeze.

6.   If I am not rushed I will chop up several onions and cook with the ground beef. This saves me a step when I start to cook. Be sure and label that you have precook onions in the ground beef.

7.   Write it on a piece of paper, put on a white board, or put it in your phone to keep up with your inventory of food in your freezer. This will help you to remember what is in there. Also put it on your calendar to update your inventory monthly. It is essential to saving money and using up your food before buying more. It will get rid of freezer burn.

8.   Make a note card for any of the entrees above and find a recipe that works for your family. Many of the FlyBabies who posted these on Facebook included their recipes. This will keep you from racking your brain to what you can fix.

One of the things that my grandmother taught me is to think a head. What can you do today to make your life easier tomorrow? She would take advantage of supermarket sales and stockpile the items that she knew she would use. My grandmother worked outside the home as a seamstress at a suit factory. She raised a garden and preserved veggies for the freezer.

We will keep looking at this process of saving money and feeding your family. Tomorrow we will look at another item that frequently goes on sale.

Do You Have Any Tips for a Neat Calendar

Dear FlyLady,

Do you have tips in your archives for keeping a better, neater calendar?

Thanks,

Carol

Dear Carol,

It is our perfectionism that keeps us from using our calendar.

We all live such cluttered lives. We think that we do our best work under pressure. That is not and will never be true! This is just one of those lies we tell ourselves because we don't know how to stop the merry-go-round.

Have you been trying to juggle all those commitments in your head? We think we are so good at this! Why do we put ourselves through this day in and day out! We can learn how to handle our cluttered schedules by just looking at them on your calendar.

Oh you don't use a calendar because you are good at keeping all this information in your head. Or if you have one, you don't want to use it because you are afraid you will mess it up. This is our perfectionism reaching out to make the merry-go-round go even faster so we can't get off and take a break.

Seeing what is on our calendar is the first babystep to realizing that we have over-scheduled ourselves and our family. The second step is to learn and practice saying, "NO"!

I have a couple of tips when it comes to not being afraid of using your calendar.

1. Use colored pencils to write in your activities.

2. Use small address labels to write your activities on and then put that sticker on your calendar.

3. Use the same address labels to cover up any boo-boos or changes in your schedule.

4. Keep Post-It Notes handy to transfer information to your calendar.

5. Don't be afraid to make a mistake. More problems come from an activity not calendared than from one written down in a messy way!

Have you been procrastinating about purchasing your new calendar? Why are you waiting? You can help to stop the spinning Merry-go-round by seeing exactly what you have scheduled for yourself.

I promise as each little habit becomes part of your routine; then you will begin to slow that chaotic ride down. It just takes a willingness to let go and grab for the golden ring of peace and quit whining that you don't have time!

Are your ready to FLY with your calendar helping you?

July's Habit: Swish and Swipe

#31 Passing on Good Habits

Dear FlyLady,

I have been flying with you for at least 10 years now, but while some habits are firm, Swishing and Swiping always seems to get left behind.

I really appreciated the e-mail from you that said to link it with another habit. I did that with bed making and getting dressed in my first year with you and it made sense. My bed is so seldom unmade now, you can bet that if it is unmade it was because I left the house before my husband got up. I also remembered as story from my seemingly BO DMIL who I found out long ago is really a SHE who discovered routines to survive living in parsonages before Pam and Peggy ever published their first book!

When I was a newly wed she told me that she did her weekly bathroom cleaning on Sunday morning after her husband left for church. She was all ready doing a daily cleaning that she called "vacuuming the middles," so it was never really that bad even with a family of 6. According to her, she would strip down, do the weekly scrubbing in the buff, and then be the very first person to enjoy her shiny clean bathroom. It was her way of blessing herself!

So I applied this linking idea twice.

First, I linked the S&S of our master bath to my morning tooth brushing session. For all of July I have managed to do it everyday. I had to ask my DH if he noticed, and he did say he was wondering why our bathroom was not getting dirty, LOL!

Second, realizing my DD will be leaving home next fall and I had yet to introduce her to S&S like I had other FLY routines. So I delegated her primary bathroom to her. You are right. It does take longer to explain that it does to do it, but I explained that when you do it as part of getting ready in the morning, like putting on your make up or your brushing teeth it really is blessing yourself. And I did tell her about her DGM who she admires doing it in the buff on Sunday morning.

DD is now really enjoying having a shiny bathroom sink for her morning prepping. I hope she carries it with her to dorm life, and it was great to bless her future by sharing this important routine. Thanks again for all you do to keep inspiring us.

This week we are in Zone 5: Your Living Room. We will only have Friday for Zone 1.

Zone 5 is the living room, family room, or den. But, only focus on one this week. After a few months, you will have them decluttered them all and the detailed cleaning will be a breeze.

Your task is to declutter this area. Spend 15 minutes a day this week doing something, anything, in this room. It did not get dirty in a week and it will not get clean in a week, but you will be making head-way. It is a trend! Get in the habit of decluttering in small segments of time. Decide what time of day you are going to tackle this little job, set a timer for 15 minutes, and just do it.

Every Thursday is our day to Run a few Errands.

Zone 5: Mission #4 Thursday

Dear Friends,

Back to the Living Room we go! One of my favorite missions for the living room is to go sofa and chair diving! This is where we start digging through the furniture and pluck out the cheerios and old socks. I am always amazed at how much stuff I can pull out of the couch in just one short month!

FlyKid Mission #4 Thursday

Hi Kids,

Today we are going to dig into our backpacks. If we clean out our back packs regularly we will know where our things are and have what we need. You are going to see this challenge quite often. This is how we make things a habit. School will be starting soon! Get a head start!

You Know What Day It Is!

Please Release Me

Dear Friends,

Clutter has been our security blanket for a very long time. It protected us from people, hard times and having to face ourselves.

When our homes are cluttered, we don't have people over. That way we don't have to open ourselves up for the public to see how we really are.

Well I am here to tell you, you are worth getting to know. When you get the clutter out of your home, you will not have to struggle with the guilt of a messy house. Let's peel back these layers of clutter and get down to the real you that has been hiding behind this wall. I don't know you all, but I do know SHEs and we are a fun loving and a sweet bunch of people with enough enthusiasm to make the world stand up and take notice. Our only problem is that we go full force or not at all.

Just like a raging river, we are powerful, but if we could only harness this strength in a more focused fashion. I think our routines are the dam that channels this energy into a product system.

You know how hard you have worked in the past and then when the day was over, you were worn out and nothing looked any better. Your husband would come home and say," What have you been up to today?" You would be crushed, because you had worked your bottom off and no one could tell. Or you would be mad and pout or yell.

If you are having anxiety attacks about releasing some of this clutter in your home; stop and think about what you are afraid of.

1. Is it the security of have 3 of an item, in case one breaks?

2. How about the memories that the item evokes when you see it?

3. And there is always the "Aunt Mary gave us this when we married."

4. I spent a lot of money on this. I can't possibly give it away.

5. Oh, I can fix this, but it has been in the basement for 15 years waiting to be fixed.

I want you to think about these reasons and look deep into the heart of them.

I see you living your life from an "Oh poor me" attitude. You don't want to let go of these things, because you feel you will never have the money to replace them. We have to work on this.

I believe this is called hoarding. When you have things in your home that you don't use and others could, this is what you are doing. We let our homes fill up to the rafters because we are afraid we might need it sometime and then we won't have the money to buy it when we do.

This attitude of "Oh Poor Me" needs to be addressed. When you think poor, you will be poor. When you give, you will receive. This has been the case for many of our members. Just the act of releasing the clutter has filled them with such joy and love, that more blessings have been bestowed upon them. Many people have discovered money in their piles, in the form of coupons, gift certificates, and checks they had forgotten about.

When decluttered our home I listened to Suze Orman's books on CD. She believes that when we release the clutter that we respect ourselves and this will bring more prosperity into our lives. My husband Robert gave me a quote once, "You are rich in proportion to what you can do without".

Think RICH! If you look at something and have the thought, I might need that someday, that is a sign that you are not thinking rich. If you say, "Yes, I may have a use for this someday, but right now I don't and when I do need it, I will be able to buy it." For now give it to someone that will use it and that need it more than you do. You will be blessed.

Now for those Aunt Mary Gifts and other stuff that evokes memories.

Why do you need things to remind you of someone you love? You have your memories. If you need reminders, take a picture and put them in a scrapbook or something. You don't need STUFF to evoke memories. A lot of the time those memories are not much fun anyway. I got rid of everything in my home that didn't make me smile when I looked at it. I mean this. Everything. Now I only have things around me that bring me joy. When you can walk through your home with a smile on your face, I have done my job.

Now let's address guilt. The guilt for not liking an item that you got for a gift. It is fine to not like it. It is OK to let it go and let someone else love it. I know that a lot of the things that are in your homes are hand-me-downs. A family member gave them to you. You also feel guilt about releasing these things. Don't! Why do you think they gave them to you in the first place. They wanted them out of their home. If they have served their purpose then, by all means let them go to a new home.

I have been teased about this Declutter song for a long time now. I just make up the words as I go, but I sing it from the STUFF's point of view. And at the top of my lungs and that is not a pretty sound, but it helps me to let things go when I have a hard time.

PLEASE RELEASE ME LET ME GO! FOR YOU DON'T LOVE ME ANYMORE!

You can do this.

What is Family Fun Day?

Dear FlyLady,

I hardly have time during the week to do everything. I have two kids ages 7 and 12. We are super busy. I always have to catch up on Saturdays. I feel like all I do is yell at my kids that we have to catch up and clean all Saturday or we will never get anything done during the week. I keep seeing that Saturday is Family Fun Day. Why is this so important?? Please help!

Frustrated in ND

So what is Family Fun Day? We have set aside Saturday's to spend time with your family doing fun stuff; NOT CLEANING HOUSE ALL DAY OR WASHING CLOTHES!!!

Growing up; Saturday was the day that we got yelled at for not cleaning things right! This is because of perfectionism and that "I don't have time today; so we will do it on Saturday!" I always hated Saturdays.

Saturdays should be fun not dreaded by the family. Get the things done every day so you will have plenty of time to celebrate being a family. Kids grow up way to fast anyway; so take this time to make house cleaning not a chore but a blessing that can be done a little every day. You will be so happy to spend 15 minutes a day maintaining your home instead of an all day cleaning marathon on Saturdays.

We are about so much more than just cleaning house. That has always made me so sad when some one would say; stick to cleaning house; we don't need all this other stuff. Well, I feel that our homes are just a symptom of our lack of loving ourselves. If I can teach you that if you will take care of yourself first then the house will come together.

This is also true for helping to teach your children that housework is not a chore; but a way to bless our families. This is why we bless the house; not clean like chickens with our heads cut off if we will make it fun!

Our mission keep us going. We do them knowing that many other people are doing them too! It is so much fun to be a part of something that helps so many people. Feather dusters are loved, not despised dirty disgusting dusting rags; Timers keep us focused and help us to play a game against the clock, the FlyLady Cartoon Magnet is there to encourage and remind us to make it fun.

Making it fun will get the job done! Try it sometime, but not on Saturdays. Do just a simple morning routine; then spend precious time with your babies!!!

No more yelling; I don't have time!! You do if you will set your timer for 15 minutes. You can do anything for 15 minutes. This will keep you from marathon cleaning and yelling on Saturday!

Are you ready to FLY and have fun with your kids? Most importantly, are you ready to LOVE YOU!

August's Habit: A Load of Laundry Daily

#7 Appreciate this Tip

Dear FlyLady,

Awhile back you had simplified instructions to doing the Laundry.

It was:  Sort, Wash, Dry, Fold and Put Away.

This is so brilliant and I've passed it along to many people and I say it to myself every day! I looked quickly on the site and didn't see it. Since the month's habit is Laundry, I think others would appreciate this tip!

Thanks for all you do for us.

Love, peace, and best regards,

Candace

Do you have a story or tips that will help other FlyBabies with this habit?

August's Habit: Do a Load of Laundry Daily

Our habit for August is working on Laundry.

If we can control our laundry by doing one load of laundry per day, laying our clothes out each night and getting dressed each morning becomes a simple habit to practice.

Our habit this month is all about making our lives easier. So, join us in our new habit of doing one load of laundry each day. Check out the great info below.

Sometimes the most daunting part of doing your laundry is getting it started, but if you make automatically sorting your clothes part of your routine, it's much easier to just throw in a load! Make laundry easier on yourself and check out some of our tools in The FlyShop!

We are in Zone 2; Your Kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of our home.

Check out our daily missions in the daily Flight Plan Email!

Have Fun!

FlyKid Mission #4 Thursday

Hi Kids,

We are taking a walk! Let's walk through our houses looking for 10 things that belong in our rooms and put them away. If you have left any shoes, jackets, school things, toys or books around the house, now is the time to return them to their home.

When you leave your things around the house, it makes the house look messy. Let's grab up the things that belong in our rooms and take them there.

I am willing to bet that Mom or Dad will be so surprised and so proud of you!

Stopping the Angry Words

Dear Friends,

What is it about out busy lives that cause us to spout angry words like a geyser? At the drop of a hat we can spew nastiness all over our loved ones, friends and even total strangers.

There are times when we receive venomous replies to one of my essays or about a member of my trusted FLY Crew. I have learned to delete these without a reply. I don't choose to argue with the FlyBaby because it will not accomplish the lesson I feel really needs to be addressed. That lesson is why we can lash out that those we love with a vicious tongue and not realize the damage we are doing to our babies and our relationships. I also want to look at the so-called reasons we feel that it is acceptable to do this.

I have heard every excuse in the world for the angry words that come from our mouths. They start with, I had a bad day, I didn't get much sleep and the worst is you made me do it. This excuse is no different from the abusive husband who blames his wife because he hit her.

I will never forget a testimonial we received from a mother who sent her child out into the world with angry words ringing in his ears. Those angry words were the last words he ever heard from his mother because he was killed when a car ran over him. There is no excuse for ever letting abusive language to hurt anyone.

Think back to when you were a child. Can you remember some hurtful words that were yelled at you in anger? When a room full of people of all ages was asked this question they could recount the event as if it were yesterday. Angry words linger and fester! They cannot be taken back. They leave your lips and scare people for life!

I want to get to the bottom of this ILL behavior. This is just what it is! I think it is because you are not getting your nap out. We all know how our babies act when they have not had their naps. Well sisters, your sleep patterns are becoming more and more in the news lately. Lack of sleep makes us cranky, angry, fat, sick sidetracked and unable to concentrate. These are some of the symptoms we experience from our inability to go to bed, shut our brains off and get the rest that our bodies need.

Just last night on the news I heard a report on sleep apnea in children and adults. It said that many people who are diagnosed with ADD have sleep problems and when these problems are address the ADD symptoms go away in 75% of the people tested.

I have a dear friend who has not had a good night sleep in 25 years. As a result she was not a morning person. So much so that she is not allowed to get up till the babies went to school. She decided that she needed to be more efficient in her work day and went to the doctor to get some help. She had tried almost every thing known to help her sleep. Nothing had worked. With her doctor recommendation he put her on a medication to help her get a continuous night's sleep. This means good REM (rapid eye movement) sleep or dream sleep.

I have another friend who did a sleep study. They found that he had sleep apnea and was recommend to sleep with a c-pap machine. This is a machine that blows air to keep airways open. He gets a good nights sleep now with the help of this machine. My next example is of myself. I am a very light sleeper. For over ten years with my husband's recommendation, I have been wearing ear plugs each night. These earplugs keep me from hearing every little noise in the house from our animals to Robert getting up in the morning. I have started to dream again and feel refreshed when I get up in the morning. Not everyone can do this because of being alone in the house or having babies. Another thing that works to disguise the household noises is a white noise machine.

Now let's look at what happens around you when you have this ILL attitude: Your children run for cover, your husband has learned to ignore you and your co-workers give you a wide berth. Then you compound the lack of good sleep with the stress that we place on ourselves with perfectionism. It's a wonder we can stand ourselves. You know that may be real problem.

When we don't like ourselves, we don't do what we need to do to stop this vicious cycle of NO SLEEP, STRESS and SOUR Attitudes. I think the answer to this major problem is love. When you love yourself enough to find the answers, go to bed at a decent hour and figure out why we can't sleep when we do go to bed; this is when we are FLYing (Finally Loving Yourself).

I want you to find peace. We can't have this peace if we are lashing out at our family in anger. The whole time I have been writing this essay I have had a song running though my head. It was a song we sang in Sunday School. Please check your tongue and your fingertips to stop angry words from hurting others.

I love you all! If you have yelled at your children this morning; forgive yourself and get in bed earlier tonight? What time are you headed to bed tonight?

FlyLady

This picture says it all: We can't rewind our words to take them back. If you want to change then you have to do it.

"Angry Words" by H.R Palmer

Angry words! O let them never

From the tongue unbridled slip;

May the heart's best impulse ever

Check them ere they soil the lip.

Love is much too pure and holy,

Friendship is too sacred far,

For a moments reckless folly

Thus to desolate and mar.

Angry words are lightly spoken,

Bitt'rest tho'ts are rashly stirred,

Brightest links of life are broken

By a single angry word.

We Need Help in the Morning

Dear FlyLady,

I'm Jenifer, and I work as a substitute teacher. I started last year and didn't expect to end up working basically full-time hours , and my home showed it!

This year I'd like to have a plan to keep it under control, but my routines tend to become overwhelming. I don't have time in the a.m. because all 8 of us share one bathroom and have to leave at the same time, but streamlined afternoon and evening routines would do the trick.

I just need help not trying to put in too much! Any suggestions, or point me toward some other posts on the topic- I (and my family!) would really appreciate!

Thank you so much!

Jenifer

Dear Jenifer,

You also need a morning routine. Racing to get out the house while everyone is battling for the bathroom is not a fun way to start your day. Those words, "I Don't Have Time!" are self defeating! Stop saying that! You do have time if you will follow some of these tips.

My suggestion would be for everyone get their showers the night before; if you are not already do that. Establish your launch pad by the door where you exit the house. Each evening place the items you will need by that door. Each person in your home should do the same thing. This will keep you from looking for items in the morning.

I want you to eliminate the CHAOS in the mornings. You are the person who sets the tone for your home. This is why it is so important for you to go to bed at a decent hour and get 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night.

Good rest will give you the ability to get up before the flow of the family. Just 15 minutes will get you dressed to shoes and that frees the bathroom up for others. With your shower out of the way as part of your before bed routine; there is less to do in the morning.

I know I wake up with chicken hair; this is why I wet my hair before I style it. I like to keep a spray bottle of water to help with that. As a child I learned early on that I had to share a bathroom with my mom and three sisters. I learned to do most of what I needed to get dressed in my bedroom. The only things that actually needed doing in the bathroom where brushing my teeth, showering, and using the toilet.

Your Before Bed Routine is going to free up your morning to run smoothly. Because so many people are sharing the same bathroom; you may need to set up a schedule and put a timer in the bathroom. You do have two sinks in the house and teeth can be brushed at the kitchen sink.

It is sort of like you are all college students sharing a bathroom. Each person needs their own toiletry caddy or bag. This way everyone has their own hairbursh, tooth brush, and the items they need to use to get ready.

With your family doing their Before Bed Routine, every person has their clothes picked out with their items are on the launch pad and ready for tomorrow. Even the table can be set for breakfast. Can you just imagine your whole family sitting down to enjoy breakfast together without being rushed.

This can happen. Just a little system to eliminate the stress of a morning will start your day on a beautiful note.

Do you have your routines written down? We have a Control Journal to help guide you through your day. Post It Notes work too!

August's Habit: A Load of Laundry Daily

#14 Remind Myself of BabySteps

Dear FlyLady,

I have been fluttering for about 5 years now. Some things are in order but other parts of my life/house are still in chaos. I remind myself to take babysteps and whatever I can accomplish is better than nothing. I work a 60 hr week with a schedule that changes each week, so routines can be a challenge for me. But some of the routines are sticking.

One that was a lifesaver for the last month was the laundry routine. Each member of the family has their own laundry basket. Fortunately my oldest DD and DH do their own laundry. But I still do the laundry for the youngest DD and any general household laundry like sheets and towels. We have developed a routine in our home so there is no mount laundry anymore. I do laundry 3 days a week, DD and DH do laundry 2 days a week so everything is under control through the 5 laundry days.

A month ago, I was doing yard work and came in contact with poison sumac. It was a mild case, thank goodness, but each day I got up out of bed, changed the sheets. Each day after the shower, the towels went into the laundry just to make sure I wasn't spreading it. Once that seemed to be under control, my two DD came home from camp with lice. To get it under control, I was daily changing sheets and laundering towels.

The routines I had developed for laundry helped me through what could have been a rough month. Every day I did a load of laundry just like a typical day. I was not panicking because of the poison sumac or lice, because I knew that I could manage because a load a day was not out of the question because I have been doing it for four years now. I can't imagine what would have happened before I started doing laundry the FlyLady way. I probably would have run out of clean sheets and towels and had piles of laundry everywhere.

Thank you.

We are in Zone 3; Your Main Bathroom and Another Room

If your bathroom is clean but still cluttered: Start decluttering (makeup, old towels, old medicine, hair supplies, shampoos, etc.). Check out our daily missions every day in the Flight Plan Email

Thursday is our day to run a few errands!

Thursday at FlyLady is Errand Day. We use this day to get out and run whatever errands we need to do for the week. Make a list of wherever you need to go and whatever you need to do during the day today and then get to it. Please be safe out there. This can include:

  • Grocery shopping
  • Doctor appointments
  • Dentist appointments
  • Dropping the clothes off at the cleaner
  • Dropping of clutter donations

And tons of other things. If it needs to be done outside the house, today is the day to do it. Make a list of these things and check them off as you do them.

Zone 3: Mission #4 Thursday

Bathroom Mission:

For the bathroom today, take 10 minutes to toss old cosmetics and perfumes. If you have these items that you have not used for over a year but they are still hanging around, it is time to dump them.

Let's dump those lipsticks, mascaras and eye-shadows that we have held on to since high school and college. The key to what to not to keep is: If you have not worn anything in the past year then.......TOSS TOSS TOSS!

Most cosmetics have a limited shelf life and are harboring grounds for bacteria. Also applies to lotions and moisturizers.

For the Guest/Extra Room:

If you have noticed the trend that we are working on in this room - it is de-cluttering! With BabySteps. We are going back in this room for our last 27 fling boogie! Once again look for 27 things that need to be put away.

Are there some clothing items that have been dumped? Coats that need to be hung up? Books that need to go back to the book shelf? Just 27 things put away throughout the house back where they belong.

Happy Flinging!

FlyKid Missions #4 Thursday

Have Fun!

Hump Day

Back to School

This is for Everyone

Dear Friends,

This time of year everyone is writing articles on how to get the children ready to go back to school. I know this is an important topic for you but we have left out the main person that has to get the children ready for the first day of school; YOU!

You are the one who has to get up and get the family moving each morning. It is your responsibility to make sure they go to bed and get the rest they need to have a productive day. Your summer has been filled with a "happy-go-lucky" spirit. No one really had a bed time or their alarm set for morning.

Then when it came to mealtime; everyone just ate whatever they could find when they got hungry. What happened to the structure in our day? What happened to our routines? If we are going to expect our children to jump on the routine bandwagon then we better be there leading the way; not just barking the orders.

We teach best by our example. Not just a simple do as I do, but an example that is set in love and from the heart. If you are not taking care of yourself; you are not going to be able to take care of your family and show them the value of routines.

Most of our lives we have run around putting out fires just to stay on top of housework, bills, jobs and the responsibilities of parenting. If you are a born organized person these things do not take a toll on you, but if you tend to get sidetracked then you know about putting out fires. A born organized person just gets things done and the people around them do not even know that it has been done. If you were raised by a born organized person you have experienced this for yourself when you got your own place. Wasn't it a shock when the toilet started to grow things? Who knew that it was cleaned on a regular basis?

If you are this born organized person I am not putting you down. All I am saying is your children don't know that this is what is happening. So when you tell them to go clean the bathroom or their bedroom they have no clue. Mainly because it was just easier for you to do it yourself than to show them that there actually is a routine to housecleaning and most things in life. For the other 80% of us that are not born organized there is hope! We can learn to be organized. Imagine that! Taking the methods that a born organized person does naturally and using them to help us gain control over our homes and lives and in the end give our children the tools to go out into the world on their own. Born organized people can't even teach us sidetracked people what they do, because they have never had to figure it out; they just do it.

I have watched the people in my life that are born organized and what I have noticed is they tend to do the same thing in the same order every single morning. At first I thought that must be so boring and then I realized that it was brilliant. The brilliance comes from having the mundane things in life taken care of so you can have fun. Isn't that what all of us really want; to have little fun. We love fun and most of the time we are having fun; except when we are beating ourselves up because the kids are late to school again because you over-slept.

It is time for us to go to school and learn something that will help us enjoy life without the guilt we place on ourselves.

What to Do with Kid's Papers and Artwork?

Dear FlyLady,

I have been checking your website for years and trying to adapt your system to my life. I am a stay at home mother of six--age 14 to 3. This year, I finally decided to sign up for the e-mails and start wearing my shoes! I always resisted that one, but now I no longer have rough feet!!

Thank you.

The reason I am writing is because I ordered some tools from you for the first time. The two items I felt would be useful were the feather duster and a rubba scrubba.

I received my package in Monday's mail and was excited to try out my new tools. I had already done my Weekly Home Blessing. For dusters, I had used an attachment to my Eureka Capture + vacuum and a Swiffer. The vacuum attachment works great for cobwebs and to dust the ceiling fan but didn't work well for shelves and dusting around decorative items. The Swiffers always seem to catch and leave behind fuzz.

The feather duster is wonderful. I owned one before, but it was not nearly as fluffy as yours. I was able to dust around everything, even a glass plate that I keep on my dresser and set my everyday jewelry on--It didn't disturb a single piece!

Then I opened my rubba scrubba. I purchased two--one for dirty jobs and another for maybe food. I read how the one woman used hers to clean her carrots. We grow a big garden in the summer. I had a specific job in mind for this tool. I was glad we were in the kitchen zone. I bought it to clean the gasket area around my built in dishwasher. There was a lot of build up and I was worried about scrubbing it with something too sharp or rough and ruining the rubber gasket. Well, the rubber on rubber was really safe and did a great job! When I was finished, I used it to scrub out my kitchen trash cans--The mission for the day! Thank you so much!

My eight year old son added the FlyLady sticker that came with my order to his collection of stickers on his take home folder from school. I wonder if he will get any comments on it?! The kids tease me about the FlyLady, but it is working. My younger kids loved watching your "Cruising through the Holidays" videos with me. We would love more videos like that.

My biggest challenge is paper clutter. With six kids (five are in school), a lot of papers come into the house everyday. Plus, there are my husbands papers. I have a hard time figuring out whether something needs to be saved or not. I also like to save ideas, recipes, etc. I'm good about cutting them out of magazines and such, but I haven't come up with the best idea to organize them--file folders? a binder?

Thank you for your website. My mom passed away 12 years ago, she was a wonderful housekeeper. You have been my source for advice on keeping my house in order. I now have two rooms in my house that are always clean--the dining room and our bedroom. I know my house will never be perfect and that is ok. As my mom used to say, "We live in our house."

Sincerely,

Suzanne

South Bend, Indiana

Dear Suzanne,

Papers are a mounting problem for all FlyBabies. We mound them up and the piles fall over.

I have an idea for the stuff you cut out of the magazines. Get a three ring binder and fill it full of sheet protectors. You can have a binder for recipes and one for other things. I did one of these once for my garden ideas. It was my wish book. Don't get all carried away with putting everything in the sheet protectors perfectly. Just slide it in and go on to the next thing.

Here is the key to making this work: When you see an article you like and want to keep; tear it out right then and slide it in the sheet protector. "Do it now" saves hours looking for the article in your magazine stash.

Children's papers are a piece of cake!

Get a bundle of 9 X 12 envelopes for mailing papers. Collect the papers each week from each child in a folder. On Saturday have each child pick out their favorite work for the week. Put that on the refrigerator/bulletin board or on the wall in the laundry room. This can be your wall of fame!

Then teach the children to address the envelope to their grandparents or aunts and uncles. Poof! The papers are gone! Your family loves to see what the children are doing and the kids learn how to let go of stuff. You also have only 52 papers for each child instead of several thousand for their scrapbooks. You can start those with sheet protectors too.

August's Habit: A Load of Laundry Daily

#21 I Would Have Procrastinated

Dear FlyLady,

Your "a load a day" saved my bacon the first week I joined FlyLady - back in April. The water was out so my usual washer load or two a day wasn't possible - I was going to have to hand wash in the creek. (This was just daily life for me on another island for three whole years long long ago when my kids were little).

I definitely would have procrastinated - hoping for a miracle fix of the broken community pump (it ended up taking over 3 weeks). Because of your "nagging" (ha ha - I LOVE you!) - I decided a half hour of hand laundry in the creek each morning was preferable to four to six hour crisis marathons. I found it pleasant in the small amounts and kept the laundry done. THANK YOU.

But that is not the main reason I'm writing. One thing that hasn't be automated yet is folding the clothes. There is one trick to folding clothes efficiently for a large family that I didn't learn for a few years. Figuring it out was a nice AHA moment for me. This is it: Do all the sorting, by person, room, shelf - BEFORE any folding. That way, once it is folded it doesn't get accidentally unfolded before it gets to its home.

Big big hugs and thanks for all the great ideas, all the reminders, and all the love,

FlyGirl Fiji.

We are in Zone 4; Your Master Bedroom, Bathroom, and Closet.

Zone 4: Mission #4 Thursday

Dear Friends,

Today let's clean off the bed side tables. Get all the tissues, trash, books, and cups off of these and put them where they belong. I have spilled many glasses of water because I did not take my cup to the kitchen in the morning! You will love the feeling when you go to bed this evening, and wake up without all that clutter in your face!

FlyKid Mission #4 Thursday

Hi Kids,

Today we have a special treat, our very own Kid Challenge from a Kid your age.

Here it is:I have thought of something called the 15 minute closet clean. For example, you set a timer for 15 minutes or watch the clock and while those 15 minutes are going you clean your closet.

If your closet is a real mess, and I mean big big mess, start with one area at a time. Like if you have a toy box in the middle of your closet and a space of each side then you pick out the big stuff of one side and then the next and put it where it goes in your room. The big stuff makes the mess look bigger than it is. Then go to the next biggest stuff and then to the small stuff but do one section at a time.

If the timer runs out before you finish take a 15 minute break and then go back to what you were doing. When you take your break don't do something you will want to keep doing so you just forget the cleaning and keep doing what you want to do.
