Please be Prepared:

Put Together Your Go Bag

Dear Friends,

Last year we were hit by Hurricane Helene. My area is still suffering from the aftermath. We were spared from any damage! All Glory goes to God! We survived a week without power, internet, and cell phones. We were prepared to shelter in place.

Most deaths from hurricanes happen inland from the several inches of rain that are dumped on a flat terrain. Helene dumped 22 inches of rain in the mountains before the winds hit. We knew there was going to be lots of fallen trees. We had no idea how bad it was going to be.

I heard one mayor say if you are going to stay through the storm to please write your social security number on your arm in Sharpie so they can identify your body. Now that is pretty tough! Please pay attention to the potential flash flooding if you are in a storm. If you are stubborn and intend on staying in a flooding area then please put a sledge hammer in your attic in case you need to break your way through the roof to get out of your flooded home. Also keep your cars filled up with gas so you can leave and in case there is a disruption in fuel supplies across the country. Charge all your phones and auxiliary battery back ups.

Now here is my question for you. If you were asked to evacuate right now; what would you take?

This is a very difficult question to answer when you are awakened in the middle of the night. This is why I want you to think about this right now and make some plans to help you in this horrible situation. A little thought and action now will keep you from panicking. Now keep in mind if you are asked to leave now; then you have to go. Grab your babies and pets and get out of your home immediately. But if you have 15 minutes then you can gather up a few items that will make your evacuation easier.

Here is the list that I have sent out quite often. Put this in your Control Journal. Read over it and take babysteps to gather up items into a bag. Do you remember that bag you had ready when you were pregnant and waiting to go into labor? Think of this evacuation bag like this. Don't keep your important papers in this bag. Keep copies at home and the originals in a lock box at the bank or in a fireproof safe. Keep in mind that you can always get replacements. It may not be easy but it is not worth losing our life to rescue them from the filing cabinet. Many of these items are habits you will need to establish. Think about the safety of your family. We have had many testimonials that say having their clothes laid out saved them precious time.

Being Prepared Can Give You Peace,

FlyLady

Go get an empty Rubbermaid Tub to start building your Emergency Supplies. Label it! Only Use in Case of Emergency! I keep a small emergency backpack in my car at all times. Start building your emergency Go Bag! Keep in mind that your Go Bag will need to be updated quarterly.

Children grow fast and food expires. We also keep a shelf in our basement with water, supplies, tarp, crank radio, and many other things that will be useful if we are stuck in our home.

Here is my 11 Points of Preparedness for an Evacuation This list is to help you think about what you need to put in your Control Journal and your Go Bag!

1. PEOPLE: Have a plan for getting out of the house and make sure everyone knows it. Have an emergency bag of food and water for your family. Include wholesome snacks and treats for the children: dried fruit, nuts, peanut butter, crackers and granola bars.

2. PETS: Keep pet carriers and leashes readily available to lead pets to safety. Also take pet food with you and treats. I have had to use treats to get my cats out of the house when we were struck by lightning.

3. PICTURES: Keep negatives or CDs of pictures in a lock box or at a family member's home. Have picture albums in one place ready to grab and go at a moment's notice. Take photographs of every wall in your home and keep them in the lock box too or in this day of the digital cloud store them there.

4. PAPERS: Have all your important papers in a lock box at a bank and only keep copies at the house. This keeps you from panicking. If you have them at home then put them in a folder that you can easily grab if you have to move fast. Color code it so you can find it!

5. PRESCRIPTIONS: Take your medications with you. Don't forget the ones that have to be refrigerated like insulin. Have small ice chest and cold packs readily accessible to pack and go. If you have babies; remember their formula or medications.

6. PURSES and PETRO: This is where you keep your identification, credit cards and cash. Keep a stash of cash for emergencies and grab it. You may not be able to use an ATM in the event of a power outage. Make sure your car always has a half a tank of gas. I a $100 bill stashed in the back of my cell phone case.

7. PROPER CLOTHES and COMFORT ITEMS: According to the weather

conditions; gather up a change of clothes along with outer clothing: coats, rain gear, boots, gloves and hats. If you have babies remember diapers. Remember to grab your children's favorite blanket, stuffed animal or toy. A game or a deck of cards could keep them occupied and calm too.

8. PLANNER/CALENDAR/CONTROL JOURNAL: These documents have all the information you will need from phone numbers, insurance numbers and important dates. They are small and filled with things you don't have to try to remember. These items may be in your phone but if your battery runs down then you can't get to them.

9. PERSONAL PROTECTION: Many of us still have that time of the month. Be sure and grab a box of your preferred protection. It may be hard to find if you have been evacuated. Stress can cause our bodies to do strange things too. So be prepared. Take medication for cramps too.

10. PHONES, RADIOS, FUEL FOR THE CAR: Many of us have cell phones.

Always keep them charged up and have a charger in the car or an extra battery. They may not work in the event of power outages, but then they might. Know which local radio station has emergency bulletins. Keep your battery powered radio tuned to that local station and have plenty of batteries for it. Also keep a old type regular phone that does not operate with electricity. GAS PUMPS don't work without power either. You can't leave if your car is on empty. So keep your car fuel tank topped off when it hits a half of tank. This way you will have gas to drive at least a couple of hours. Evacuation routes are usually bumper to bumper traffic. Having a tank filled will keep you less stressed.

11. PATIENCE: This is one of the most important things to pack. Keep it inside of you so that you have a clear calm head. Having your P's to Preparedness list guiding you will keep you patient. In the event of an evacuation there will be lots of displaced people. Being patient will make things less stressful. Your children need to see you calm and collected. This will help keep them calm too.

We can FLY in the face of Danger and Emergency if we are prepared. Don't wait till you are being asked to evacuate. Everyone thinks that it could not happen to them. Well it could and it is up to you to make sure you are prepared.

Don't wait! DO IT NOW!!

Company is Coming

Dear FlyLady,

We have family coming for a visit. I need some help. I can't seem to get anything done.

Struggling to Get it all Done

Dear Struggling,

We have a podcast to help keep you focused.

I did this podcast so that you would have someone coaching you through Crisis Cleaning your home! Right now many of you are in a panic. I want you to use this to help you stay focused and get ready! You can do it!

Crisis Cleaning VIDEO Podcast

Here are the directions of how we do this. Get out your timer.

Dear Friends,

Company is coming! I can hear the panic in your voices. "In a few days, we have a ton of company coming, what am I to do?" If you want a crash marathon cleaning session, I can help you, but be warned, without the routines, your home will be trashed again in a day. So you have to listen closely.

1. GO GET DRESSED ALL THE WAY TO SHOES, HAIR FIXED AND FACE

MOISTURIZED OR MAKEUP PUT ON. DON'T QUESTION ME ON THIS. JUST DO IT. Put on some good working music. Not too fast, just slow and steady. peppy, but not aerobic. Light a candle that has a good scent or put on some spices on to boil on a very low heat.

We are going to start in our kitchens. As the kitchen goes, so does the rest of the house.

2. Set a timer and spend 15 minutes in the kitchen. If your sink is not clean and shiny, then shine it first, then you can fill the sink up with hot soapy water and start to clear off the left and right counters. Empty the dishwasher, When the timer goes off. Stop what you are doing and go to the living room.

3. Set the timer again and do 15 minutes cleaning off the coffee tables or picking up toys or newspapers. Concentrate on one thing. Not all of it. When the timer goes off, then go back to the kitchen. Get a laundry basket and put the things that don't belong in the living room in the basket. Take a garbage bag with you too. Start throwing away the trash. Don't get caught up in the guilt we have about recycling this stuff. Just bag it up for now. 20 pounds of trash in a landfill is not going to kill you.

So get over this perfectionism attitude. As you get your home in order there will be plenty of time to recycle. For now we are focusing on getting the home presentable. You can't do this if you are hyper-focusing on sorting and recycling.

4. In the kitchen set the time for 15 more minutes, continue to work on clearing the counters. DO NOT GET SIDETRACKED AND WANT TO CLEAN OUT A CABINET. WE ARE DOING ONLY SURFACE CLEANING.

5. Now take a break and walk around and look at what you have accomplished in just 45 minutes. Set the timer for 15 minutes and drink a cup of tea or coffee or whatever you love and just relax. When the timer goes off. You are back in work mode for 15 more minutes.

6. This 15 minute session is in the bathroom. Do you have this! Clean the sink in here first, then pick up towel and dirty clothes and put them in the hamper. DO NOT GET SIDETRACKED AND START A LOAD OF LAUNDRY. I MEAN THIS. LAUNDRY WILL COME LATER!

7. When the timer goes off, you are back in the kitchen. For 15 more minutes. We can do anything in 15 minutes. Keep working till the timer goes off. Then you go to the Living room once again.

8. In the living room, continue to pick up and put away.

9. Every 45 minutes take a 15 minute break.

Adapt this schedule to fit your physical limitations and children's needs. But you get the picture. Stay focused on one job for 15 minutes. You are going to be so surprised at how much you get done in a days time.

My timer is my best Friend.

You can do this.

Now turn off the computer and get to work!

Let's FLY through this Crisis Cleaning, so you can sit back, relax and enjoy your guests.

August's Habit: A Load of Laundry Daily

#23 Our Laundry Routine

Dear FlyLady,

I was thinking this may help some people as well who hate such as me to do laundry! Thanks to you, this is our laundry routine.

I have two teenagers and designated simple chores for them a long time back. Each one does their OWN laundry on Fridays.

We have found using the closet works like a dream. We have put in closet organizers so everything can be hung. That way it is easy to see what we have to put out the night before to wear the next day.

All of us have stain sticks in our closets. We pre-treat ahead of time. There are stain sticks like Spray and Wash that you can do NOW instead of later. Which makes laundry easier as well on wash day.

We do all our sheets on Fridays and the kids do their clothes as well then. It " can " turn into Mt. Washmore a little bit. But it is my job to keep the sheets and blankets moving. And then back on the bed. Next, we do towels everyday. It is very " EASY PEASY " for DS to turn on the washing machine at night after everyone is done. Throw them in the dryer the next morning. His job to fold them after school which takes five minutes.

Next our laundry, DH and mine, so twice a week with working and such we seem to have more clothes. I have to iron them which I can procrastinate on. But laundry is MUCH easier this way!

Julie

FlyLady here: Our habit for August is working on Laundry.

A load a day keeps CHAOS away!

Do you have a story or tips that will help other FlyBabies with this habit?

August's Habit: Do a Load of Laundry Daily

Our habit for August is working on Laundry.

If we can control our laundry by doing one load of laundry per day, laying our clothes out each night and getting dressed each morning becomes a simple habit to practice.

Our habit this month is all about making our lives easier. So, join us in our new habit of doing one load of laundry each day. Check out the great info below.

Sometimes the most daunting part of doing your laundry is getting it started, but if you make automatically sorting your clothes part of your routine, it's much easier to just throw in a load! Make laundry easier on yourself and check out some of our tools in The FlyShop!

We are in Zone 4; Your Master Bedroom, Bathroom, and Closet.

This week we are working on Zone 4: The Master Bedroom. It also includes any bathroom you may have off the master bedroom, and whatever lurks in the bedroom closet. This will be an ongoing process. You may or may not get the entire room cleaned this week. That is not the objective. Any thing you do in this room now will be an improvement over the way it was last week. Next month you will focus on it again.

Your bedroom should be the cleanest room in your home. Many of you still use yours as a garbage/clutter disposal for the rest of the house. If your bedroom is clean and clutter free, then it becomes an inviting haven for building your relationship with your spouse. The best gift you can give your children is a strong marriage. This is true whether your children are 2 or 40 years old.

Your task is to declutter this area. Spend 15 minutes a day this week doing something, anything, in the master bedroom. It did not get dirty in a week and it will not get clean in a week, but you will be making head-way. It is a trend! Get in the habit of decluttering in small segments of time. Decide what time of day you are going to tackle this little job, set a timer for 15 minutes, and just do it.

Saturday is our day to make memories with our Family!

Saturday at FlyLady is especially fun because it's the day we have Family Fun Time! This a special time just for you and your loved ones to spend time renewing your relationships with each other. Your week has been busy and time has been limited, so spending some special time with your family is so very important today. Here are some great Family Fun Time ideas for you:

  • A movie at the local theater
  • A picnic in the park
  • A few games at the bowling alley
  • Family Board Game Night

There are endless possibilities for you and your family to share. For even more great ideas sent in by members just like you, check out this link: Family Fun Ideas.

Five Star Review

The FlyLady is Such a Good Motivator! I Don't Cringe When People Pull Up Unannounced. I am Happy!

I highly recommended this book for any type family or single person no matter what age you or your children are. I was a fly baby for a short time years ago and recently, I found you on fb about 6 months ago. I ordered the book and have really enjoyed the revival in my heart and my house.

AMAZON

I used to cringe in agony when I would see people pull up in the driveway now I don’t. Just like Marla says the husband has started organizing and getting rid of his stuff too. The teenage boys are a work in progress. I loved the tips on , the delicate cycle, storing sheets under the bed( I’ll Have more room in my linen closet and that’s major when you are limited on closet space like us) .

The FlyLady is such a good motivator! I have found my self quoting her and singing the songs. Earlier I was cleaning and was upset about something having water spots and Marla popped in my head and said “that’s your protectionism “ and I moved on.! I so wish I would have stuck with The Flylady years ago when the kids where younger but, so glad to have her now.
