Hello Mark. When we purchased Toy Tiger (No. 58), she had the gin pole. It actually works very well.
The pole is an old mast section with a 'foot' bolted to the bottom and some hard foam glued to the foot just to protect the deck. It then just sits on the deck in front of the partners. We strap it to the eyes on the collar just so it won't move. The pole has two spectra shrouds that are pull taught as possible and tied securely to the chainplates and a spectra forestay attached at the forestay tack point.
There is a simple block at the top of the pole with a 1:1 purchase that goes from the bridle, up to the top of the pole and back down to a block on the collar and back to the cabin top winch. The trick is to make sure your bridle is low enough to allow the mast to clear the deck. The carbon mast is light enough that its very easy to keep the foot of the mast down even though the pivot/balance point is much higher than where you'll have to rig it. You need to apply most of the same rules as you would using the club crane or gin pole. Make sure everything is clear to run, particularly the forestay and furler that tends to slip under the life line and get caught at the worst moment. Make sure that your bridle is not using the spreader brackets to keep it down / support it -- it needs to be secured by a line running down to the gooseneck. The mast comes up at the back of the gin pole, then simply lower it and guide it through the deck.
I think our biggest issue in the beginning was that it kinda looked sketchy -- but once we just let the pole do the work, it was really easy. I'll get a measurement of our gin pole and post it another time.
Hope this helps. Feel free to reach out for additional information if you need some.
