I am looking to replace my main and am interested in knowing if there is a sailmaker that appears to have the latest and greatest with regard to speed and durability.

Jeff,
My opinion only --
One should consider the whole upwind sail package as a system. Brand A
jib + Brand B main will be harder to optimize no matter how well the
main is designed and built. If $$ are not an issue, I would say the
latest 3DLs are smoking fast and finally looking rather durable. For a
limited budget, I think the Ullman Fiberpath is your best bet.

At least that is what we are seeing in SoCal (typically 8-12 kts year round)

Port tacked the fleet of Farr 30s a couple times at Whidbey last week with my new 3Di. The boat great speed and point, looks great too.

Paid a little more but the reviews of the 3Di holding up are pretty good.

Chuck,
Sweet!
Was that in light air?
Any truth in finding it harder to change gears with 3Di (i.e. making
it deeper draft in the light stuff if it was designed flat enough for
20kt+)?
How is the sail weight vs 3DL?

I am just getting a quote from Doyle sailmakers Sydney Australia. They have 20% off winter special. You are apparently in USA so you get our gst tax off and favourable exchange rate. That may mean that you get 35% off retail!!!

Regards

Adrian

Latest generation Neil Pryde main sail kicks ass just like the jib, but be prepared to change the rig settings.

At the 2014 Chicago Nood (TWS = 8-12 kts) we port tacked the fleet at the start not once but 5 times and won each time.

Also, 007 is for sale in Pensacola with a new Donny Brenen white epoxy bottom.

t will be soon moved to Chicago for fresh Awlgrip on all the spars.

Contact me if you know anyone who may be interested, especially in locations where there may be some active FT10 Class racing.

Adrian,

Which main?  Doyle recommended that I get the Pentex/Flex.  Said it would be stronger and in better shape in year two and will put up with the higher winds and UV better  than the Stratis

Good Afternoon,

Sorry to join the conversation late but I’m also working with a Doyle sailmaker in Rhode Island and have asked for a quote. Our bowman works for Doyle in the summer so have been working with him on upgrading sails. I will forward the pricing so we can compare and maybe get one of the lofts to give us a multiple sail deal.

I’ll send shortly.

Thanks,
Mark

Pentex will be way too stretchy for a sailplan this size. Not even in San Diego. Technora or Aramid.

Hi Mark,

After I sent you detailed instructions how to retune your mast about a month ago you replied as follows:

Hi George,

That's great! I will work to get the boat tuned up for this Wednesday and report back on sail shape.

Thanks,
Mark

However, you have not reported back on mainsail shape after you retuned the mast, as you promised.

Why is it that some owners are looking for sails from different lofts to solve their boat speed and tactics problems when learning how to become better sailors is so much more rewarding. Rather than buying yet another sail, these folks need to hire a coach.

Hi George,

Your tune up hints, although helpful, didn't fix the issue. The crease/fold in the sail between the front of the bottom batten and the clew remains. After over a year of trying to fix, I am sticking with my plan to buy a main from another loft for racing and will use the current sail for midweek around the cans and cruising.

Thanks again,
Mark

Mark,

I am truly sorry to hear that.

It may be that your mast butt is not all the way forward, and the mast is not all the way back at the partners.

Before you totally give up on the main sail try adding one more 360 degree turn to the d1 at under 8 kts TWS, 2 turns for the BASE setting, 3 turns for over 12 kts and 4 turns for over 18 kts.

Kindest Regards,

George

This weekend I'm going to retune and remeasure the rig. I've adjusted all season but maybe a "start again from scratch" approach will help resolve.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll let you know what happens next week.

Thanks again,
Mark

Neil Pride OEM main seems to decently quick.  Original kevlar jib is okay too...

Almost all will claim to have the latest and greatest sails with regard to speed and durability; its called salesmanship.

I asked if the owners would recommend not what the sailmakers claim.

Just a FYI - if you have a diagonal crease from the clew up into the front of the lower batten etc it means that the mast bend has exceeded the sails luff curve - so typically try a lighter air setting etc

Bruce
