Travelstart Sponsors Green Aviation Research Group
South Africa - Aviation is already responsible for between 5% and 9%
of global greenhouse emissions and is one of the fastest growing
industries. A typical long-haul airline passenger from the UK to the
US is typically responsible for over 3 tonnes of CO2 emitted into the
atmosphere.
Travelstart's international offices sell a combined total of tickets
close to 500 000 tickets per year. Travelstart's CEO Stephan Ekburgh
believes there are cleaner alternatives. He chose to sponsor R 50 000
to a small South African startup, FlyH2 Aerospace CC who are
researching hydrogen as a clean aviation fuel.
FlyH2 Aerospace founder, Mark van Wyk says "When hydrogen burns, it
bonds with the oxygen in the atmosphere, producing only heat and
water. Electrochemical bonding produces the same effect, making
hydrogen one of the cleanest fuels known to man". Mark is currently
designing a small-scale prototype which he hopes to have flying by mid
2008.
