Possibly one of the first fuel cells completely built in South Africa
is now in development. My partner Jean-Michel and I have received all
the various parts that we needed from Amazon.com, GoodIdeaCreative and
Fuel Cell Store in the US and Electrographite in South Africa.
Development starts next week. We hope to produce 1.0V and 500 mA from
the singe cell at 35% effecincy.
This is the first stage in our development. Following this, we will
attempt to build a 500W fuel cell stack to power our second UAV (FlyH2
UAV Bravo).
The prototype cell is costing us under R 3000 in development costs. We
estimate the cost of developing the 500W fuel at less than R 15 000.
Using local materials and keeping the costs low are essential in
making the technology viable for your average South African.
