Object-oriented software for model-robust covariance matrix estimators. Starting out from the basic robust Eicker-Huber-White sandwich covariance methods include: heteroscedasticity-consistent (HC) covariances for cross-section data; heteroscedasticity- and autocorrelation-consistent (HAC) covariances for time series data (such as Andrews' kernel HAC, Newey-West, and WEAVE estimators); clustered covariances (one-way and multi-way); panel and panel-corrected covariances; outer-product-of-gradients covariances; and (clustered) bootstrap covariances. All methods are applicable to (generalized) linear model objects fitted by lm() and glm() but can also be adapted to other classes through S3 methods. Details can be found in Zeileis et al. (2020) , Zeileis (2004) and Zeileis (2006) .
The flow of code here goes from top to bottom:
- Gather data from impure sources.
- Call a pure function with that data.
- Change state (including user interface) based on return value from pure function.
The reason I call this a sandwich is that I think that it looks like a sandwich, albeit, perhaps, a rather tall one. According to the myth of the sandwich, the 4th Earl of Sandwich was a notorious gambler. While playing cards, he'd order two slices of bread with meat in between. This enabled him to keep playing without greasing the cards. His compatriots would order the same as Sandwich, or simply a Sandwich, and the name stuck.
I like the sandwich as a metaphor. The bread is an affordance, in the spirit of Donald A. Norman. It enables you to handle the meat without getting your fingers greased. In the same way, I think, impure actions enable you to handle a pure function. They let you invoke and observe the result of it.
This last example looks as though the bottom part of the sandwich is larger then the rest of the composition. This can sometimes happen (and, in fact, last line of code is also pure). On the other hand, the pure part in the middle will typically look like just a single line of code, even when the invoked function performs work of significant complexity.
I want a more distinct name, but have had trouble coming up with one. I've been toying with various abbreviations of impure and pure, but have finally settled on impureim sandwich. It's a contraction of impure/pure/impure.
Reheat skillet over medium-high heat. Add the butter and swirl it to coat the pan. Crack one egg into the skillet, season with salt and pepper and reduce heat to medium. I like to cover the skillet with a small lid at this point, as it seems to help the egg cook faster and more evenly. In one minute, you should have a perfect sunny-side-up egg. However, I find that for this sandwich, to somewhat rein in the mess, it helps to then flip the egg for 20 to 30 seconds, until the yolk is still runny, but less likely to run right off your sandwich.
In my world where gluten is an evil, stomach-punching, methane belching alien that has come to earth to torture me, this sandwich makes me sigh with longing. However, a nice runny egg and bacon and blue cheese might even make a rice cake tolerable. Thanks!
Do you remember the movie Spanglish? There was a sandwich in it, one that Thomas Keller supposedly invented for the scene or something. This makes me think of that and want a mash-up of the two (I think the Keller fried egg sandwich had tomato, which I want, and different lettuce, which I do not want). Now I need to go Google the crap out of that and make a bunch of sandwiches!
I have loved fried egg sandwiches forever; just thinking about them takes me back a lot of years. I think of how my parents fed us and as an adult I can more easily discern the hows and whys of some traditions. We were never without but with six kids I better see now why chicken, hamburger and eggs were such a big part of our diet; they were less costly than a lot of others things. There were days when we might have scrambled eggs for breakfast and fried egg sandwiches for dinner. But nothing like this!
I recently discovered your site and I must have printed out a bunch of recipes. I was not successful in my own attempts at popovers and challah bread with other recipes so I will be trying your recipes very soon! Will keep you posted on how they turn out. The egg sandwich looks amazing!
Fried egg sandwiches are a thing of childhood nostalgia for me. My mom would put just a tad of miracle whip on there, and let me tell you, that little tang was FANTASTIC. This looks like a great recipe to dress up an egg sandwich though!
So the smoke alarm went off when I was making the bacon, I totally panicked and forgot to add the shallot and the bleu cheese, and the sandwich was STILL fabulous. This bodes well for making them round 2 tomorrow! Thanks so much :)
I thought of adding in some nuts, dried cranberries, maybe some apples or grapes but then I really just wanted to keep this nice and simple. So I threw in some Greek yogurt for a bit of creaminess and tossed it all together with the shredded chicken and homemade pesto. It was so quick and easy to put together, and it served as such an amazing sandwich filling, especially when slathered over a fresh baguette with some arugula, sliced tomatoes and mozzarella.
I am going to put this together tomorrow. But I am going to add a Twist that you might want to try. There was a restaurant in Charlotte North Carolina that would take a fabulous chicken salad like this and put it on bread and then toast it for a few minutes with the mozzarella and tomato Slice on top like an open sandwich. No need to heat the whole thing through. Just enough to get the cheese softened enough to hold the open sandwich together. Try it with Swiss cheese on top also.
I have made this many times. Not using mozzarella. I grate some parm in the chicken and pesto filling. I also have used leftover mashed sweet potato on the sandwich as well I just smeared some on one side. It was amazing!
Yes, fresh mozzarella is perfect for sandwiches! (Regular, factory-made processed mozzarella is lower in moisture and is easily sliced, cubed, or grated. It is most often used in cooked dishes because it melts much better than fresh mozzarella).
I have made this 3-4 times now. I absolutely love it! I actually take the bread out (baked fresh) and add the cheese and tomatoes, then pop it back in the oven for about 5 minutes to melt a bit then finish off the sandwich. So delicious!
My friend is out of the hospital after having knee surgery. Tonight we will be watching movies while I make dinner for her. We will be having this sandwich and the Loaded Baked Potato Soup from your site as well. Both look DEEEEE-licious!!!!
