The Zarnescu laboratory, funded by NIH, DoD and private foundations is moving to the Department of Cellular and Molecular Physiology at Penn State Medical Center in Hershey PA on July 1 2022. We study RNA based mechanisms and metabolic dysregulation in aging and neurodegeneration (e.g., amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and dementias) using Drosophila, cell based models and patient tissues. We also seek to discover small molecules with neuroprotective potential using Drosophila and cell based models. Multiple projects are available ranging from studying changes in translation caused by TDP-43 proteinopathy in neurons, glia and muscles, the relationship between aging and neurodegeneration from the perspective of RNA metabolism, the role of glycolysis in neurons and at synapses, and drug discovery. The successful applicants are expected to have experience and a record of accomplishments in one or more of the following areas: Drosophila genetics, molecular and cellular approaches (e.g., cloning, RNA/protein isolation, immunoprecipitations, immunofluorescence), cellular metabolism (e.g., metabolic pathways, mitochondrial biology) and/or behavioral assays. If interested, please send CV, research interests, and reference contact information to Dr. Daniela Zarnescu: dzar...@gmail.com
