Opportunities


The Faith-Based and Community Initiative offers training sessions
across the country to help strengthen the work of America’s “armies of
compassion.” Below is a list of upcoming regional trainings offered
through the Initiative, each designed to build the effectiveness of
frontline nonprofits.

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development


One-Day Art & Science Grant Writing

This one-day workshop will assist faith-based and community
organizations in preparing a competitive grant application for Federal
funding. Workshop topics include: proposal writing techniques, how to
access HUD and other government funds, HUD grants available to
nonprofit organizations, and HUD common factors for awards. These
workshops are intended for organizations that have their
organizational board established, administrative package prepared,
service program or development project identified, and feel ready to
compete for Federal grant funding. For more information, see below,

Small Business Symposium, October 18, 2008, Richmond, VA

The SBA will partner with Mt. Gilead Full Gospel International
Ministries for the 2nd Annual Small Business Symposium. The program,
“SUCCESS 2008” - Small Business Symposium, provides cutting edge
economic education from small business professionals that excel in
business. The SBA will conduct six workshops including: Providing
Outstanding Customer Service, How to Market Your Business,
Understanding the SBA 8(a) Business Development Program, How to Fund
Your Big Idea, How to Price Your Product or Service, and Legal Issues

Department of Veterans Affairs



VA Chaplain Service Veterans Community Outreach Initiatives

The purpose of this initiative is to provide training to local clergy
engaged in serving veterans or interested in doing so. The VA
Chaplain Service enlists faith-based and other community organizations
to provide outreach and other services to returning veterans. Local
VA chaplains will conduct half-day training events throughout the
country to provide education and resources for clergy members and
others regarding physical, mental, and spiritual health issues
experienced by some returning warriors and their families. For more

VA CFBCI Quarterly Conference Call, November 21, 2008, Washington,

Department of Veterans Affairs Network Teleconference System (VANTS).
The purpose of this call is to share new information of relevance to

Preparedness: A Faith-Based and Community Initiatives Preparedness
Training Workshop

The DHS Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives will host
three "Partnerships in Emergency Preparedness: A Faith-Based and
Community Initiatives Preparedness Training Workshop," which engage
Homeland Security stakeholders, including the private sector,
governmental agencies, and non-profit groups such as non-governmental
organizations and faith-based groups, in a strategic partnership to
develop a national culture of preparedness. The workshop will focus
on equipping DHS and FEMA partners in emergency preparedness with the
resources, knowledge, training, and skills necessary to respond to,
and recover from all threats, hazards, and adverse incidents. For
