Why is everyone using firebase?

Hi there, i have always developed my own backend services and rented webhosting for rest api. I pay 42€ per year for 50gb disk space and unlimited bandwidth. Iam in need of more disk space and lookong for better options.

Almost everything related to flutter uses firebase. I checked firebase and didnt understand anything what it does and how much it costs. Can anybody explain to me what firebase is ?

P.s. users of my app upload lots of photos and use the app extensively. So there will be lots of reads and writes tothe disk and database.
