Hi there,

I have a Google Form where some of the multiple choice questions are optional.  How can I edit my answer key to allow for skipped questions?

Basically, I want Flubaroo to mark the answer correct if the student answers correctly.  If the student skips the question, I want the answer to not be counted as part of the score.  If not counting the question is not an option, how to I have Flubaroo mark the "blank" answer as correct?

Thanks so much

Flubaroo will not do what you want as far as skipping questions that are blank.  Are you saying the total of possible points should be based on the number of questions answered?

You could add an answer of Skip but then all the students will answer that if they realize that it will be graded as correct.

I don't know if you can trick Flubaroo into treating a Blank or Null as correct by using the %or operator.  I would try putting the Blank inside of single or double quotes to see if that works.  Answer row. Cat %or ' '.  I don't have time to test right now.

Another option is to grade your own quiz and report the data using Autocrat or FormMule.  You can make any rules you can put into a formula.  See Comparison.  There are examples at the bottom.

Good Luck!  Let us know what you did.

Another quick thought.  Can you isolate the students that should skip certain questions and copy their responses into a different spreadsheet and skip the questions when grading with Flubaroo?

Bummer.  Thanks so much.  I tried the %or ' ' and %or " " but no luck.  Basically I'm using the form for a training.  The kids only have to complete the review questions for the work shift they are assigned to.  There are 10 different work areas and they only have to work 2 different jobs, thus only take 2 quizzes.

Thanks again for the help.

Hi Joe,

I basically have the same challenge as Bonita.

If the student skips the question (in my case an entire page of questions because on page 1 of google forms they can choose between pages of questions), I want the answer to not be counted as part of the score.

Could you help with this?

Thanks so much!
Sabina

Sabina,

I would not recommend this solution without lots of testing.  At one time Google was treating a blank the same as False.

If you can't change the Form then try one of the methods I mentioned earlier.

Flubaroo doesn't know about skip patterns in the Form so you have to do something manually and are prevented from using Autograde.

I can't even imagine what kind of controls Flubaroo would need to handle this kind of quiz automatically.
