Dear FLTK developers,
I'd like to release FLTK 1.4.2 very soon now, i.e. tomorrow (Feb.
21) at or after 4 pm CET (3 pm UTC).
Please let me know if there's anything you're working on that should
be part of release 1.4.2 until tomorrow (Feb. 21) at 2 pm UTC (3 pm
CET, 6 am PST). I apologize for the short time frame, but I believe
it's overdue and really urgent now to release 1.4.2.
If I don't get replies with valid reasons to postpone 1.4.2 I'll
release it tomorrow after 4 pm CET.
Note that I don't see the latest issues (#1208, #1209) critical for
this release. I hope that #1207 will be fixed tomorrow by Manolo
(otherwise I could push the suggested patch before release).
Bundled image libraries will not be updated in this release, no
matter if there are newer versions available.
Background:
This release (1.4.2) is intended to be included in the next
Debian Stable release (aka Debian 13, aka Trixie).
Trixie's release "Milestone 1 - Transition and Toolchain
Freeze" has been announced for March 15, 2025. Releasing
FLTK 1.4.2 tomorrow should give Aaron, the Debian/FLTK maintainer,
enough time (about three weeks) to prepare FLTK 1.4.2 for release in
Debian Trixie.
Trixie is supposed to be released in June or July 2025. Note that
Debian's "Stable" releases are only every two years, that's why it
is so important to get FLTK 1.4 into it. Other Linux distributions
that are based on Debian will hopefully follow then...
If there are later bug reports we can still apply patches or make
another release, but then there's no guarantee that it will be
accepted for Debian Trixie - although Aaron wrote us that he can
still update FLTK packages after the "Transition and Toolchain
Freeze". However, I wouldn't want to rely on this.
FYI: FLTK 1.3.11 (or 1.3.12, yet to be released) will also be part
of Debian Trixie. FLTK 1.1 will no longer be supported by Debian -
it's still available in the current Debian Stable (12, Bookworm).
I hope you all agree and we can release 1.4.2 tomorrow. Again, sorry
for the short delay.
Albrecht
