  • Has anyone any experience of growing Baltic Parsley (Cenolophium denudatum)? I came across it on the Thompson and Morgan website (when looking for seeds for the lovely looking Lysimachia Ephemerum) and apparently it's an excellent cut flower, and a hardy perennial. Just wondering if anyone knows its vase life? Thank you.

Hi Susannah,
I haven't grown it, and it does look fab.  So will definitely try and get hold of some.  Beth Chatto likes it too …… calling it an admirable umbellifer!  I have found all other umbellifers, including cow parsley, have a reasonable vase life, particularly if you pick them young.  Perfect for weddings and parties.

Hope that's useful.

Hi Suannah

I promised to do a vase-life test on Lysimachia Ephemerum, - and I am glad to report that after 2 weeks it still looked good, but the upper un-opened buds never really opened. I think it is valuable as a cut flower.

Best wishes
Ruth G.

I recently saw Lysimachia clethroides in a flower shop - seems to grow much faster and is even somewhat invasive - needless to say I immediately bought a plant at the local nursery to propagate and add to my collection!

Haven’t come across Lysimachia ephemerum, but I grow L clethroides and like it.  It’s invasive on my light land, but worth growing just for its lovely name ‘goose-goes-walking’!

Hi Arjen

I would love to know how tall Lysimachia clethroides stand.

I've just seen it growing in a nearby garden - about 50-60cm, shorter than I thought actually. But it did look a bit yellowish so perhaps higher with better feeding

I had Lysimachia clethroides last year, I think I must have harvested it too hard maybe, it didn't come up this year, I thought it was invasive too.

But I really like it and want to get it back into my garden. My impression of the one year of having it was that it didn't have a long harvest window (..?), hope that is the right way to describe the periode it can be harvested at the right stage, and that all the stems were ready for harvesting at almost the same time.

I think 50-60 cm is about right.

Hi Anja,

I think you are right about the harvesting window. I wonder if the Chelsea chop might help with that.

So the only place I could find Baltic Parsley seeds was Thompson & Morgan but they didn't have them in stock, so I clicked on the 'email me when in stock' option on their website. A few weeks later, I got an email advising the seeds were in stock, so I thought it might be worthwhile ordering a few other seeds at the same time, what with the postage and all. So I did. But when the delivery came, there were no Baltic Parsley seeds. 'Not in stock - see below' was the note. Below, nothing to see.

So I went back onto the Thompson & Morgan website and clicked the 'email me when in stock' option. And a few weeks later, I got an email telling me the seeds were in stock. But I was unsure whether I would get the seeds anyway, from the first order. So I emailed them to ask (and also moaned about getting an email from them about specific seeds being in stock only to find they weren't). I heard nothing in reply. So after a few days, I ordered the Baltic Parsley seeds and also a few more (I couldn't help myself and it seemed silly to pay postage on one packet of seeds). And guess what, when the order came, there were no Baltic Parsley seeds. 'Out of stock - see below' read the note and this time below was another note advising the amount had been credited to my credit card.

Don't think I'll bother with Thompson & Morgan again. The really annoying thing is that I was going to keep my seed orders to just one or two suppliers (and Thompson & Morgan wasn't one of them) and it is quite time-consuming browsing seed catalogues. Oh, if only I hadn't fallen for Baltic Parsley...

The exact same thing happened to me and they have not replied to any of my moaning emails.
Very fed up with them, going to phone tomorrow and moan in person!
