The Handbook offers a practical and repeatable methodology that achieves an ideal balance between the standards, rigour and visibility required for good project management, and the fast-pace, change and empowerment provided by Agile.
AgilePM Foundation introduces the DSDM Agile Project Management framework, a pragmatic and repeatable methodology. This course explains how to prepare for and run an agile project, highlighting documentation, techniques, roles and responsibilities recommended within the framework.
Based on the proven fundamentals within the Agile Business Consortium's Agile Project Framework, the certification provides the ability to deliver Agile projects in organizations requiring standards, rigour and visibility around project management, while at the same time enabling the fast pace, change and empowerment provided by Agile.
Training for AgilePM is available from the network of Accredited Training Organizations (ATOs) who are assessed and certified by APMG International. The full list of AgilePM ATOs can be found at: -international.com/all-atos
Individuals also have the option of self-study to prepare for the examinations. APMG-International administer online exam sessions, allowing those who self study the opportunity to sit an online exam from the comfort of their own home or office.
For those who self-study, the exams can be taken anywhere in the world, from the comfort of your home or workplace, with online proctoring. A proctor will access your exam as you take it to monitor the exam environment through your computer's desktop, webcam and microphone.
Once you have booked an exam, you will be given a registration email to schedule an appointment with your live proctor via our Candidate Portal. Our online proctoring system allows you to take your exam anytime as sessions are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For more information, please click here.
If you are sitting the examinations through an accredited training organization, the costs of the exams are generally included in the course fee. APMG-International use a global pricing structure, so for those sitting exams at a public exam centre, the cost is dependent on where the exams are being sat. To find out the cost in your region, please contact the APMG Service Desk on +44 (0)1494 452450 or at: servi...@apmg-international.com
There are no pre-requisites for the foundation examination. Candidates must achieve a pass at foundation level before completing the practitioner examination. The DSDM Atern Foundation and Advanced Practitioner certificates are also acceptable pre-requisites for the practitioner exam.
AgilePM has one main manual supporting the qualification scheme, published by Agile Business Consortium, called Agile Project Management Handbook. This can be purchased from APMG Business Books at: www.apmg-businessbooks.com
For individuals self-studying it is almost impossible to say. As all candidates have different experience and amount of time available for study, it varies from person to person. We suggest you buy the handbook and have a look through for yourself before deciding how long you need to spend learning.
For those studying with an accredited training organization, foundation courses are generally delivered over 3 days, while combined foundation and practitioner courses are generally delivered over 5 days. It is well worth investigating with individual providers, as many will offer tailored and blended learning solutions.
AgilePM foundation examinations can be marked on location after the exam, but this is down to the discretion of the invigilator at the time. Practitioner and re-registration answer booklets are marked at APMG International offices and results released soon after.
Only organizations licensed to do so are allowed to use the AgilePM logo. Such organizations include AgilePM ATOs (Accredited Training Organizations) and registered partners accredited by APMG. Agile Project Management is based on DSDM Atern, which has always been the only Agile method to fully-address the concept of an Agile project, and provides detailed guidance on how to manage and deliver Agile projects.
Agile Project Management focuses on the elements of Atern that are specific to the Agile Project Manager; it is important to note that Atern also provides detailed guidance on delivery techniques and solution development, which are outside of the Agile Project Management Handbook.
Although Agile Project Management can be viewed as a subset of DSDM Atern, there are some extra features in Agile Project Management that are not currently available in Atern. These include "Top Tips" for Agile Project Managers at the conclusion of most chapters. These "Top Tips" have been collected from the in-depth practical experience of professional individuals who have managed and delivered Agile projects for many years. These are practitioners who work across a wide range of backgrounds, from small, simple projects to large, complex projects, including regulated environments where they need to work in conjunction with other methods and approaches such as PRINCE2, ITIL, CMMI, ISO, etc. Access to this experience through these "Top Tips" has proved to be invaluable and will help the Agile Project Manager to avoid pitfalls and prepare for success.
An organization wishing to become an Agile Project Management ATO must first submit an application form to either the APMG-International service desk or a regional APMG-International office. The organization will then be subject to APMG-International's ATO assessment process.
It is possible to earn PMI Education PDUs for attending third-party provider training (training courses not offered by a PMI Authorized Training Partner), as long as the training meets the requirements around the skill areas of the PMI Talent Triangle. Please check the PMI website ( -resources/maintain/earn-pdus/education) for further details on how to record your PDUs and what supporting evidence is required.

After initial feasibility study and planning, an AgilePM project is developed in a series of solution increments, each of which are deployed on completion. Once the final increment is deployed, the project is complete. The increments are themselves made up of one or more timeboxes, which are typically 2-4 weeks in duration and are developed iteratively by an empowered solution development team. The key is that Time, Cost and Quality for the project, and for each increment and timebox, is fixed. This is achieved by being flexible about the features included, by using MOSCOW prioritisation.
The Agile Business Consortium develops and governs several certifications which are managed by APMG International. The most common are AgilePM Foundation and AgilePM Practitioner (the two I took last week). The others are Agile Business Analysis (AgileBA) Foundation, Agile Programme Management (AgilePgM) Foundation, Agile Advanced Practitioner, DSDM Agile Trainer-Coach and DSDM Agile Consultant. The latter three involve written submission and oral examination. As well as the AgilePM Handbook, there are also handbooks for AgileBA, AgilePgM and AgilePfM (Agile Portfolio Management).
The philosophy of AgilePM is: Best business value emerges when projects are aligned to clear business goals, deliver frequently and involve the collaboration of motivated and empowered people.
There are eight stated principles: Focus on the business need; deliver on time; collaborate; never compromise quality; build incrementally from frim foundations; develop iteratively; communicate continuously and clearly; demonstrate control.
The benefits (of the iterative process and cross-functional involvement through the project) are stated as: Better business involvement and ownership in the solution; on time delivery; the risk of building the wrong solution greatly reduced; smoother deployment.
Roles and Responsibilities: Roles are important here because the framework is trying to make sure all relevant functions are actively involved and collaborating. Roles defined at the Project Level are Business Sponsor, Business Visionary (supplies the vision and strategic direction, and responsible for securing and measuring the project benefits), Project Manager and Business Analyst. Those defined at the Solution Level are the members of the SDT: Solution Developer(s), Solution Tester(s), Business Ambassador (represents the business (or users or customers) within the development team) and Business Analyst (who sits in both teams); one of these is nominated as SDT Team Leader. There are also other supporting roles, such as Workshop Facilitator or Technical Advisor. Roles can be shared, or multiple roles can be undertaken by one person (subject to guidance and depending on the roles). Project level roles form an escalation path.
