See title. For people who are NEW at trumpet (haven't played for more than a year or two), please don't recommend the Arbans book. It's a great study book for intermediate to advancing players (high school to college level), but for people just learning the instrument, the Arbans doesn't offer much. Sure, it has first studies, but it's dry, and has issues such as a fourth line D in the first exercise, and then it gets really challenging really quickly. Also, not much music there that a beginner can play (first solo melody has Scotch snaps, turns, triplets, and a G above the staff.
Beginner: Robert Getchell's First Book of Practical Studies for Cornet and Trumpet. This book has a good, logical progression for trumpet players. The melodies are simple and fun to play. It's CHEAP (under $10). The only concern I have is that there aren't a lot of technical studies - just melodies, and you'll need a fingering chart to go along with it. Range is a small concern - the first study goes up to 3rd space C but it's manageable with help.
I don't recommend full band method books like Standard of Excellence or Essential Elements. While these books are OK, and you will learn to play from them, they're FULL BAND method books as opposed to TRUMPET method books. Their progression of skills is not always logical for trumpet players, and they are missing lots of studies and exercises that are useful for developing trumpet skills.

The Second Book of Practical Studies is designed to logically extend the techniques already presented in the First Book and also to introduce and develop new techniques and rhythms that will offer a challenge to the intermediate student. Through the use of slightly more difficult and more extended studies, it is hoped that the material included in this book may more fully develop general musicianship and more feeling for style and interpretation and thus act as a foundation for solo literature.

Sight-singing is the ability to read the music and sing the pitches and rhythms correctly. You don't need to be a great singer to do this, but it is an important skill to develop, because on the trumpet you are the one who makes the sound. Unlike other instruments such as the piano, those notes are already there. On the trumpet you need to be able to get the sound image in your mind of what you are going to play. It is also the best time to correct your mistakes before finding them on the trumpet.
The skill of transposing a piece of music on-demand can be a very useful. Say you brought your trumpet to a friend's house who plays piano. You would like to rehearse with your friend, but there is no trumpet part. You could read off the piano part, but that's in concert pitch, also known as Concert C. If you play what is written you will be not playing the correct note, because they need to be transposed up a whole tone. For example, if the piano part has a "G" written, you must play an "A" on your Bb trumpet for the pitches to match. Using this book to take melodies you are familar with, and learning to tranpose them to at least Concert C will be the most useful to you. There are trumpets in different keys, and you can be expected to transpose in several different keys, and this book can be used to practice them as well.
