HI there,
if any of you are looking for a php project to work on, and are
interested in mapping and openstreetmap
please consider to help with microcosm a OSM api server in php

Tim has build this as a mini and light server,

https://github.com/TimSC/microcosm
and my branch :
https://github.com/h4ck3rm1k3/microcosm

you can install it on your server and use it for a fast API server.

There are a few osm api servers :

the offical ruby on rails api server is here
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/The_Rails_Port
but it is hard to install and uses alot of resources.

There is a python server from mapquest, we need to look at this as well.
https://github.com/MapQuest/mapquest-osm-server

I have also an experimental perl dancer API server but it does not
have the db backend
https://github.com/h4ck3rm1k3/FOSM-Api I will be working on making
that to be able to talk to various servers.

Basically I want to build up a team to work on the tiny api servers
and setup a bunch of servers
that are local api servers that are fast. We will have to work then on
protocols to manage conflicts
but I think this will be easier to use. My plan is to make servers
for cities or provinces.

This should give better performance and make mapping more fun and also
help you learn.
