The event will feature all facets of green living, from a greenhouse
tour to a workshop on green building methods, clean boating, water
conservation and healthy foods.
The greenhouse tour begins at 1 p.m. at the Coral Shores High School or
at 2 p.m. at the Marathon Boatyard, 2059 Overseas Hwy. After a look at
the boatyards, the tour will drive to an energy efficient house, then
to No Name Key for a look at ''off grid'' houses, without hookups to
water or electricity. The tour ends at 5 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday workshops, starting at 9 a.m. and continuing to 5
p.m. will be at the high school. Four discussions will be presented
simultaneously, each lasting an hour. Topics will include smart
fertilizing and composting; keeping cool for less; green interior
design; organic foods and healthy cooking; 10 ways to save money every
month; solar electric, an introduction to photovoltaics; a greener
boating industry; water-smart landscaping; selecting energy-efficient
appliances; reef friendly boating in the Florida Keys; kids can
conserve, too, and more.
Panel discussions will look at green careers, green resident success
stories and sustainable resorts.
The two-day event is sponsored by the Monroe County Extension Service
and more than a dozen individuals and businesses promoting
environmentally friendly living in the Florida Keys.
