Thanksgivukkah: A Rare Occassion

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 10:41 PM PST

Lighting the menorah is an annual Jewish tradition for our NBC 5 Natalie Hurd and her family.

"The story of Hanukkah is the story of liberation it's the story of a minority religion fighting and succeeding in religious freedom," says Rabbi David Zaslow.

But this year the celebration is a bit different it is Thanksgivukkah that is a combination of Thanksgiving and Hannukkah.

Rabbi David Zaslow says the combination of the Jewish holiday and thanksgiving landing on the same exact day is extremely rare

"They say it wont happen again for 75,000 years."

And for that reason Natalie's mom Leslie Levy says she decided to bring some new flavors to this Thanksgivakkuh.

"What I picked is brining my turkey in manishavits wine which I did and they said don't be surprised if it turns the turkey purple which it did but the turkey came out delicious."

With Thanksgiving in full swing and still keeping all the traditions of Hanukkah alive like lighting a candle on the menorah for the eight nights of the holiday and then opening gifts after. Levy says there's still more work ahead  for the next six days.

"The idea now of grading all those potatoes to make the latkes it just seems like a lot of work but we're going to have fun."

A special day for this family but also a special moment in history, one we wont see again in this lifetime. With that in mind Rabbi David sends this message.

"On behalf of the whole Jewish community of Southern Oregon I wish all our friends people of every faith a wonderful Hanukkah a wonderful festival of lights and a wonderful thanksgiving."

Football feasts: Thanksgiving memories courtesy of the NFL

Posted: 27 Nov 2013 09:05 PM PST

ARLINGTON, Texas — The NFL played six games on Thanksgiving in 1920. The holiday tradition apparently didn't settle in until 1934, the year the Detroit Lions were born. Back then, the Lions were just looking for a way to take some attention from the Detroit Tigers, who were so popular that new football owner George A. Richards thought he needed a diversion even though it was baseball's offseason.

Sunny & Quiet for Black Friday

WEATHER DISCUSSION

The weather pattern remains consistent with the past several days, dry and quiet. An air stagnation advisory is in effect through Saturday at noon due to the strong inversions building in the overnight hours and the lack of mixing.

Beginning Sunday, an arctic air mass will begin to push into the Northwest from the Gulf of Alaska. This will bring a quick drop in snow levels for early next week. The computer models the past several days have been pretty inconsistent with the timing of this system's arrival but it seems as though showers in Southern Oregon will not begin until late Sunday, and this will be mainly for areas west of the Cascades.

At the Coast, showers will begin earlier on Sunday – probably in the afternoon. Many locations, especially the higher elevations, will be making a change over from rain to snow on Monday with widespread shower activity and lowering snow levels.

I suspect by late afternoon and early evening, the passes will begin seeing impacts from the winter weather. By Tuesday morning, snow levels will be down to the Valley floor. Showers will begin winding down at this point, but isolated showers will likely bring snowflakes to the Rogue Valley.

Those traveling back into Southern Oregon from Portland or Seattle on Sunday should keep a very close eye on the forecast. The arrival of the cold air and lowering snow levels will be much sooner the further north you are. They should stay between 6,000' and 7,000' Sunday across Southern Oregon.

Fire Nearly Destroys Home on Holiday

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 12:04 AM PST

video preview image

MEDFORD, Ore. — For one family this Thanksgiving, they could only watch as their home went up in flames late Thursday night.

Medford Fire Battalion Chief Erin Sawall said, “Most of the house is unlivable at this time.” Several nearby residents were forced to evacuate their homes around midnight when the house on the 3000 block of Mallard lane caught fire, leaving that family without a place to sleep on Thanksgiving.

The homeowners said they heard several popping sounds before seeing smoke and flames. When they saw flames inside their bathroom, they immediately evacuated with their two children and pet.

We spoke with neighbors who witnessed the incident, “It’s sad, it’s sad. It’s Thanksgiving, supposed to be a happy time of the year, you know?”

Multiple crew members with Medford Fire and Fire District Three fought to put the fire out. “Initially, crews did what’s called a defensive attack,” said Medford Fire Chief Sawall. But, crews were eventually forced to pullback out of the home. “They started protecting the exposure, but then when the roof started coming in, we pulled all of our firefighters out.”

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but those pops heard by the homeowners right before the fire started, were even heard by neighbors nearby. “Obviously, they’re pretty loud because our house is down the street away’s, it didn’t sound like a firecracker really,” said one neighbor. “It was almost, if you were to take, like if you heard like wood planks drop real hard and land on wood.”

Investigators cannot confirm yet what those sounds could have been, or if it had anything to do with the cause of the fire. But Medford Fire Chief Sawall said they will continue to investigate the cause, “To where the fire was, the origin area, and we’ll work our way from that.”

As crews continue their investigation today, recovery after losing their home to a fire will be difficult for one family.

Avoiding Theft on Black Friday

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 05:21 PM PST

video preview image

MEDFORD, Ore. — The risk for theft is high this time of the year. If you’re venturing out to shop or just parking your vehicle somewhere, police have a few tips for you.

Hide anything you buy or anything in your car that’s valuable. Cover it in your car or immediately take it home. Don’t leave items out for potential thieves to see. Police say purses and wallets are especially attractive to thieves when left unattended in cars and shopping carts. Also when you’re parking, keep vehicles in well-lit areas.

"Maybe just take credit cards, your I.D. and your checkbook or whatever you need and keep that in your pockets. In your front pockets preferably because anytime you have a purse you’re opening yourself up to having it be stolen off the person, out of the shopping cart, out of the car," said Medford Police Lt. Mike Budreau.

Among holiday thieves there are also holiday scams. A popular scam is “dummy websites” that appear identical to your favorite store sites. You can detect these websites if you don’t see a customer service number or the website has a different name than the posted name. Also never use a debit card when buying anything. Use cash, check or a credit card.

Some Thankful to Work on Thanksgiving

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 05:15 PM PST

working on thanksgivingMEDFORD, Ore. — If someone is missing from the table at your Thanksgiving dinner, you’re not alone.

Many families are celebrating without a police officer, or a firefighter, or someone in the food industry who is on the job Thursday night. NewsWatch12 talked to local workers who don’t necessarily want to spend the time away from home, but want to cash in on holiday pay.

Marie Callendar’s in Medford is one restaurant open on the Thanksgiving holiday. It’s all hands on deck as all employees and even some volunteers pitch in, helping to cook and serve food and prepare takeout orders.

Thanksgiving is one of the busiest times of the year for the food chain. The local manager says it takes them nearly a month to prepare for today. He’s worked almost 80 hours just this week.

"You get a little disheartened from it a little bit because it is Thanksgiving Day, but then again when you come in and you see the people that don’t have family coming into the area, or even people who are eating by their self that day, It just feels better that you are able to take care of their needs and take care of them that day, and that’s what it is all about," said Robert Baxter, the Assistant Manager at Marie Calendars.

Employees also say they do not mind working the holiday because of the extra pay, and many say they will get the chance to see their family at some point throughout the day.

Gospel Mission Holds Thanksgiving Feast

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 05:02 PM PST

gospel missionGRANTS PASS, Ore. — While many people are still enjoying their Thanksgiving meals, volunteers in Grants Pass are making sure no one goes without food this holiday. More than 75 volunteers at the Gospel Mission cooked and served the Thanksgiving dinner.

Preparations for the dinner took more than a week, and volunteers came out early Thursday morning to help set up and prepare the home-made meal. Hot turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing and cranberry sauce were all packed high onto plates.

"It’s really even more than I could ever imagine you know to be warm and our beds are clean, our beds our showers, to sit here and eat like this…it's a feast," says Gospel Mission resident Michael Powell.

This year the group wanted to get people together from different walks of life, the theme was “Meet Your Homeless Neighbor". Some said it felt like one big happy family.

A Quiet Next Few Days

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 04:59 PM PST

video preview image

WEATHER DISCUSSION

We will have quiet weather in place through Saturday with a mix of sun and clouds and slightly warmer morning lows then the last few weeks. As we head into Sunday and early next week a very cold arctic airmass is going to settle over the Pacific Northwest which is going to not only bring drastically colder temperatures but also much lower snow levels. While the timing and amount of snowfall is uncertain at this time, the potential for Cascade pass travel impacts through the day on Monday are likely.

Rain will arrive Sunday, mainly in the evening as weather models are now holding off on dropping this system south; though if you are traveling south from Washington or Northern Oregon you will see the impacts earlier on Sunday and should be prepared for winter driving conditions. Snow levels Sunday will remain high around 6,000 feet so only expecting travel problems around Crater Lake for southern Oregon. Snow levels plummet to 2,000 feet Monday morning and will impact the high Cascade Passes (Diamond Lake and Lake of the Woods) with snow covered and slick roads. Through the day Monday snow levels will continue to drop to the valley floor by Tuesday.

While the heaviest precipitation looks to fall during the day Monday, we could see our first snow showers of the season for the valley locations on Tuesday. And for those traveling home Monday over Siskiyou and Sexton Summits, you may run into snow and ice at times and should be prepared. Check road conditions before heading out next week and be prepared for winter driving conditions. All areas, especially the east side, should also be ready for brutally cold temperatures next week with highs dipping to the 20s on the east side and 30s for west side valleys.

I hope you all have a very Happy Thanksgiving and I am so thankful for all of our loyal viewers. Have a great evening and drive safe for Black Friday and next week!

Traffic Crash on Thanksgiving Day

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 01:27 PM PST

video preview image

NEAR TALENT, Ore. — Police are looking for a hit and run suspect after the driver rammed a Yreka family off the road, causing a rollover crash.

Police say a white van rear-ended a maroon Subaru on I-5 on Thursday afternoon, leaving an imprint on the back of that car that could get the driver caught.

A Yreka man and his 80-year-old mother were headed to Rogue River for Thanksgiving. Just after 12:30 p.m., at exit 21 near Talent on I-5, another driver also heading north hit the Subaru, driving at least 80 miles per hour.

Oregon State Police say that impact pushed the Subaru into the median, rolling over several times. Police say both passengers were able to walk away from the crash unharmed because they were both wearing seat belts.

The driver of the white van drove away without stopping. Officers say it's either a ford Winstar or a Dodge Caravan. Its license plate stamped the back of the car. Police cut off the bumper of the Subaru with the imprint.

Officers think it’s a California plate with the last three digits of 5 1 0. It will have some front end damage. Contact OSP with any information.

Law Enforcement Warn of Holiday Scams

Posted: 28 Nov 2013 10:46 AM PST

scam 2MEDFORD, Ore. — For many, the holidays are all about giving, but for some, they can be about taking. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is offering some warnings for the most common scams it sees during the holiday season.

One is called the “green dot scam”, although depending on your location, the color of “the dot” can change. Victims get a telephone call, demanding money to avoid arrest. The victim is told to send the money by purchasing a “green dot” card at a store.

Once the card is established, the scammer gets those numbers and takes off with the money. A recent victim lost nearly a thousand dollars.

“Ask for proof. It’s not uncommon for banks to hear that from people so that if your bank is calling for you tell them you’d like to know, 'How do I know it’s you? What can you prove to me?' So it’s not normal for someone to call and start asking personal information," said Andrea Carlson with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Also, for online shopping, look out for “dummy sites” that appear identical to your favorite store sites. You can detect a dummy if you don’t see customer service numbers, if the website address is different from the site’s posted name, or if it has poor grammar or spelling.

Credit cards are widely believed to be safer than debit cards against fraudulent purchase online. If you are shopping with plastic in a store – make sure you swipe your own card or watch the clerk as they swipe your card to make sure it’s not swiped in a secondary machine.

    Gunman Threatens Sizzler Customers

    Posted: 30 Nov 2013 07:50 AM PST

11-30sizzler mugGrants Pass, Ore. - A man is in jail after threatening customers with a gun at local restaurants.

According to the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety, officers were dispatched to a report of a  man with a gun at the Sizzler on the 1800 block of 7th street on around 4 o’clock, on Friday, November 29th. It was reported by several witnesses that the man, identified later as Michael Henry Goodwin, was walking around Burger King and Sizzler pulling a handgun from his coat pocket and waving it around. One caller stayed on the line with 911 and provided updates of Goodwin’s location. The first officer on scene kept his distance but maintained a visual of Goodwin until other officers arrived. The officer reported he too witnessed Goodwin brandish the handgun and point it at the patrons inside of Sizzler. Sizzler was called and advised to lock all their doors until the situation could be resolved.

Other officers arrived on scene and took Goodwin into custody without incident near the entrance of Super 8 Motel. Goodwin in fact had a stolen, loaded handgun in his possession. The handgun was reported stolen in a burglary to the Josephine County Sheriff's Office this year.

Once Goodwin was in custody, an officer went to Sizzler's and advised them the situation had been resolved. Several more witnesses and victims came forward and were interviewed regarding Goodwin’s actions. Goodwin was subsequently lodged on several charges including Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Menacing and other charges.

    Protest Sign Interrupts Holiday Festival

    Posted: 29 Nov 2013 08:19 PM PST

    video preview image

ASHLAND, Ore. – Tonight’s Festival of Light was briefly interrupted by a protest sign blasting holiday consumerism, just as Santa was addressing the crowd.

The sign was unfurled from the roof of Alex’s, just as Santa was making his appearance on the balcony. Many who saw it say it wasn’t visible until the switch was flipped and the lights turned on.

Once it appeared, it got a reaction from the crowd before it was quickly taken down.

But many, including the owner of Alex's, still don’t know how it got up there.

"There’s other places and other buildings that are connected where somebody could get up on the roof and do something," said Alex's owner Charles Tobey. "But it’s nothing we had anything to do with or support."

Ashland police say two people were seen displaying the sign, but they were able to escape on foot and slip away into the crowd.

They say the sign itself isn’t illegal. The two responsible could be charged with trespassing, but police say that would amount to a slap on the wrist and it isn't worthwhile to investigate.

    Ducks Win Wild Civil War

    Posted: 29 Nov 2013 08:16 PM PST

1129civilwarEUGENE, Ore. — Marcus Mariota capped off a nine play, 83 yard drive with a 12 yard touchdown pass to Josh Huff with 29 seconds left as the Oregon Ducks came back to beat Oregon State 36-35 in Friday’s Civil War. It was the end of a wild second half that saw the lead change hands six different times.

The Ducks jumped out to a 14-0 lead after the first quarter, thanks to touchdowns from De’Anthony Thomas and Thomas Tyner. The Beavers responded with a big second quarter to send the game to halftime tied at 17.

Oregon State struck first in the third quarter with a Tervor Romaine field goal, and the teams continued to trade scores for most of the half. The Beavers took a 35-30 lead with 1:38 in the fourth on Victor Bolden’s 25 yard touchdown run.

Senior Josh Huff led the way for the Ducks with 186 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Terron Ward led the Beavers rushing attack that nearly tripled its per-game average, with 231 yards against the Ducks.

Oregon improves to 10-2 with the win, while the Beavers drop to 6-6. It’s the sixth straight Civil War win for the Ducks.

Locals Petition to Save Shop Smart

    Posted: 29 Nov 2013 08:06 PM PST

11-29 jbo shop smartYREKA, Ore. — One signature at a time, demonstrators in Yreka are raising awareness for their local Shop Smart. The downtown store is set to close December 30th after its parent company, C&K Market, declared chapter 11 bankruptcy.

If that happens, it will leave about 35 employees out work.

"That’s going to cut our income in half, almost," said Jack Larcade, whose girlfriend works at the store. "And we’re already struggling."

Larcade's and his girlfriend have two children. The closing of the store will have both of them looking for work, along with all of the other employees leaving the store.

"You’re going to have all these people competing for jobs… there’s not enough jobs here to cover everyone that works here," said Larcade.

This isn’t the first time a store shut its doors in Yreka. A Ray’s market closed over the summer, leaving many looking for work and crippling nearby businesses.

Demonstrators trying to collect signatures say the odds are stacked against them, but they’ll take them anyway.

"I just thought if nobody’s doing anything, why shouldn’t I?" said petition organizer Carol Mattos.

The 376 signatures that have been collected so far will be brought to C&K corporate in an attempt to change management’s mind.

Whether it’s C&K someone else running the show, shoppers and employees just want a store to stick around.

"That would be great to keep the employees with a job and to keep this community with a place in the center of town to stay open," said Mattos.

While Larcade and his girlfriend say they aren't relying on this petition, they also don't see why it can't work.

"I don’t think there’s a reason it can’t be saved," said Larcade. "This is the middle of town, everybody comes here… We can’t lose these kind of things."

    Arctic Blast Arrives Next Week

    Posted: 29 Nov 2013 06:36 PM PST

    video preview image

    WEATHER DISCUSSION

A weak disturbance will move through tonight and another one tomorrow bringing increased clouds at times across the region and a slight chance for light showers in the Coast Range. Fog will also continue for west side valley locations and the coast, with some areas of the Umpqua, Illinois, and Rogue Valleys only see a break in the fog late in the day before fog returns overnight tomorrow.

The timing of the first arctic front arriving this weekend looks to bring the first round of showers overnight Sunday to the coast spreading inland during the day on Monday. The heaviest precipitation will fall through the day Monday, mainly in the afternoon and evening for inland areas. Snow levels on Sunday will be above pass level, dropping to impact the higher Cascade passes (Diamond Lake, Lake of the Woods) overnight Sunday through the day Monday and the lower passes (Sexton and Siskiyou Summits) by Monday night. Snow levels will drop to the valley floor by Tuesday morning and while light precipitation will fall with this second front, it will bring the first valley snow of the season.

While this event is still several days away and thus timing and snow totals will continue to be tweaked into next week, the Cascade passes could receive 2 to 4 inches of snow by Tuesday, a foot in the Cascades and up to an inch on the valley floor. After the rain and snow end a very cold arctic airmass will settle bringing brutally cold temperatures especially to the mountains and east side. Be sure to protect pipes, pets and livestock as we head into a “taste of Winter” next week.

Stay tuned to Newswatch12 as we approach next week and better nail down timing and snow totals. Thanks for logging on and have a great weekend!

Black Friday Competes with Civil War

    Posted: 29 Nov 2013 05:05 PM PST

civil war webMEDFORD, Ore. – A combination of Black Friday shopping and a big-time football game left some local sports bars wondering what the outcome would be for their bottom line.

The annual Civil War football game between the Oregon Ducks and the Oregon State Beavers is typically one of the most popular and profitable days for local sports bars and restaurants. But some managers said they worried potential customers could be distracted by their shopping on Friday.

Most sports bars were taking a wait-and-see approach Friday afternoon before the game, not knowing if they would need to call in extra staff. Some managers hoped the Black Friday shopping would actually bring in more customers wanting to get off their feet. But others worried that a morning full of shopping could make potential customers just want to go home.

One restaurant not open to the public yet for the Civil War is the new Buffalo Wild Wings, located by Sportsman's Warehouse on Delta Waters Road. The restaurant is currently training its staff, and will be officially open on Sunday.

No Clues Yet in Medford House Fire

    Posted: 29 Nov 2013 05:03 PM PST

fire web fridayMEDFORD, Ore – Fire investigators continued looking into what sparked a large fire in a Medford home Thursday night.

The fire destroyed the garage and damaged part of the house on Mallard Lane shortly before midnight on Thursday. The family was able to escape safely as crews battled those flames.

Friday morning, the family went through the damaged house, trying to salvage whatever they could. Friends and neighbors helped them carry out clothing, boxes, and bags full of items. Homeowner Michael McFarland did not want to speak on camera, but said he is thankful that his family is safe.

Crews from Medford Fire came back to the house Friday, and said they will be looking into how the fire started. They said it appeared that part of the fire burned from the outside of the house and into the attic, but said they have not found an exact point of origin.

Ashland Family Displaced Overnight After Carport Fire

      Posted: 29 Nov 2013 11:27 PM PST

      Ashland, Ore.

An Ashland family was displaced Thursday night after a fire erupts near their home.

No injuries were reported. Officials say a propane tank caught fire and sent flames shooting 20 feet into the air.

The family was displaced due to smoke inside the home. Officials say that the family should be allowed to re-enter the home sometime Friday.

Fire investigators say they don't yet know the cause of the fire, but did say the damage was mainly to siding of the carport.

Family of Four Escape House Fire

A midnight fire sends a family running out of their Medford home.

Everyone is safe but a family, the day after Thanksgiving, will be unable to stay in their burned home.

Much of the roof on the Medford home in the 3800-block of Mallard Lane, is scorched and fallen in.

"We heard two pops on the outside of the house, just bam bam, right in a row," said the homeowner who did not want to speak on camera.

The fire broke out just before midnight on Thanksgiving.

"I went out around the back of the house and the whole side of the house was in flames, engulfed in flames from up the side down to the fence. The whole thing," recalled the homeowner.

He immediately jumped into action, getting his wife and two kids out of his burning home.

Fire fighters said nearby houses were also evacuated.

Next-door neighbor, Rick Hobson's home, sustained damaged as well. He received a stressful phone call last night when he was out of town.

"They told me that my house had some damage, but the neighbor's house was in total ruins," said Hobson.

When he arrived back home this morning, he surveyed the damage.

"Need to have insurance called," he began.

"I see that the windows have been broken out," observed Hobson.

Meanwhile, another neighbor living behind the burned home is dealing with her own mess. She said one of the water canons used to put out the fire, sent water pouring into her home. Now she's cleaning up her soaked carpet and the glass from her shattered back window.

Back at the home that went up in flames, a family is trying to salvage what they can.

"At least half of their house is destroyed," said Erin Sawall, Battalion Chief for Medford Fire and Rescue.

The homeowner speculates the cause may have been electrical, however investigators are still working to find the cause.

Fortunately, the homeowner says his family does have a place to stay.

      Small Business Saturday

      Posted: 29 Nov 2013 02:55 PM PST

      Author:

      Lyle Ahrens

While 'big box' stores have been the focus of 'Black Friday' shoppers, some of the shopping emphasis will shift to Main Street tomorrow...

Heather Coaty of Blue Dot Kids says "Small Business Saturday' has helped boost sales...

"We have noticed more people come in, they're taking advantage of our sales, that we always do for a Small Business Saturday."

Susan Beach of Beach's Jewelers appreciates the effort at keeping dollars local...

"Oh, yeah - we see folks coming through, and they're really nice folks that try to help out the small businesses that are trying to stay in business just for them."

Small Business Saturday is a concept started by American Express back in 2010, and the idea has struck a chord with business owners and shoppers.

Small businesses can offer several advantages...you just might find that unusual gift for the person who has everything at the Spring Street Antique Warehouse...

"Oh, yeah - we do that a lot."  Notes Antique Warehouse owner Leroy Tillery.  "People come in and look around, and oftentimes they find it here."

"And I think there's better deals."  Says shopper Laura Jaskiewicz.  "Especially here at Blue Dot Kids.  I can get more for my money, which is really important to me right now.  I'm in grad school and the finances are tight - but I still want my kid to look cute."

While Small Business Saturday may have corporate roots, the Mom and Pop businesses are happy to reap the benefits.

A survey by the National Federation of Independent Business claims 2 out of every 3 shoppers have heard of Small Business Saturday...and 47% of those surveyed intend to do at least some of their holiday shopping at a small business.

Black Friday not what shoppers bargained for

Black Friday turns dark as Twitter and Youtube follow fights and even shootouts.

We spoke with local shoppers to find out if this year's Black Friday was worth it.

A frenzy. Check out this fight that sparks at an out of state Walmart. ending in an arrest. This year, people got more than they bargained for. From fights to shootouts, and cops getting dragged by fleeing shoplifter's cars. "We had lines out the door," says Rogue Valley Mall Starbucks employee Maxwell Court.

Here locally no reports of violence, but those we spoke with say it didn't go as expected. shopper Vicki Allen, who we caught up with in Fred Meyer, says Black Friday was simply... a bust.  "This has been the busiest store we've been in, all of them have been dead," said Allen.

Once more, Black Friday ate into Thanksgiving dinner. More stores opened earlier than ever before, Michaels kicking things off at 4 pm. The early start a topic of heated debate: over 1 million people shared this Facebook protest.

"Everything seems to be regular price," shares Allen.

Plus, according to retail analysts with Nerdwallet.com many Black Friday sales mirror sales featured earlier in the year.

"I thought we were going out for the sales," says Allen, "and they didn't even have them. So we left our family for them and they didn't have them."

Official revenue totals won't be out until after the weekend. Only then will we know if the newest Black Friday tactics put companies in the black.

This year, the United States Labor Department issued crowd management safety guidelines to help curb violence associated with Black Friday.
